June - Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild
Volume 36 No. 1
June 2014
NQA Chapter OK 544
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I am humbled and honored to be the president of a quilting guild with so many caring and
giving members. The halls and meeting room
at the church were beautiful with 54 quilts displayed. Debbie Bass received 12 quilts for
Quilts of Valor and told me she has others that
will be donated. I'm sure those veterans will
appreciate the quilts as much as our family
members and friends who are serving or are
veterans.
As our new board members take their positions I hope you will encourage and support
their efforts.
Keep Stitching,
Lee
OUTGOING PRESIDENT
FAREWELL ADDRESS
To say thank you to everyone who has
helped make the last year of COQG successful would take up the whole newsletter! So THANK YOU. The meeting and dinner this month was tremendous. The final
count of quilts that we displayed was 62.
There were almost 100 people for dinner. I
was overwhelmed by your efforts, humbled by those we were honoring, and
proud to be a part of this guild.

FROM YOUR OFFICERS
From your Membership Corner
What a great May meeting! Our members and veterans were greeted with the red, white, and blue
pieced blocks, lights, flags, welcome vets pictures,
and a wonderful quilt by Kathy Maxey with a punch
work eagle made by her husband in the center! And
this was just the membership area!
Entering the meeting area was an awesome beautiful site, where over 50 quilts adorned the walls, with
tables decorated in red, white, and blue. Add our
members and their families supporting our veterans
and our veterans themselves, great food, and fun
and what more could you add to this mix!
If you haven't renewed your membership yet, be
sure to get those dues in this month to avoid cancellation and being taken off the newsletter lists. Our
guild year started June 1st. The drawing for the
membership has been completed and the free
membership for 2015-16 goes to Laura James!
Laura has been a member since 1997. Congratulations Laura!
Out with the old and in with the new!
Welcome Carolyn!
Thanks for electing me to chair Membership
for 2014-15. Meg Brosey’s great work in this
position is a tough act to follow, but she will be
mentoring me. Thanks, Meg!
I am looking forward to getting to know many
more of you, and welcoming lots of new members this year. Please bring your friends to
Guild and invite everyone you know to attend
our meetings. What better place to learn new
techniques, be inspired by beautiful quilts, and
make life long quilting friends?
See you at our exciting June meeting!
Carolyn Golden 2014-15 Membership Director
Returning members will not be receiving new membership cards as part of our reduced budget process. Please do not send us a SASE if you are not a
NEW member. The membership form has been
modified to reflect this but I don't think it hit the website yet. If your previous information is still current, complete the name and payment information
and write "Same" across the address and email portion of the membership form.
A big thanks to those who submitted their dues and
the generous contributions that are coming in with
them!
Your talents are always needed. If you can help as
a mentor or at the membership table, your new
membership director, Carolyn Golden, will greatly
appreciate it.
Have a great quilting month!

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who brought
batting to be used for stuffing. The Washington
Senior Center and Oklahoma Home and Community Education Club made “comfort pillows”
by stiffing sweat pants with the batting scraps.
These will be used by the J. D. McCarty Children’s Hospital for their Library Reading program.
Your Generosity is greatly appreciated –

Block Lotto
Starting this month we will begin blocks related to “Birds, Bees, and Butterflies”. These blocks will
finish 12”, but you will be deciding where to use the fabric included with the pattern. The piece of
fabric MUST be used. Here are the basic rules –
1. Use the fabric given (can be a border or background or appliqué or pieces!
2. Block can be pieced (if applicable), appliquéd, painted, embroidered, or drawn.
3. Patterns will be given to size if pieced. However, any other pattern can be sized to your
desired scale.
This may be a stretch for some, but each month someone will be winning a unique assortment of
blocks on a particular theme.
Trusting you will have a Lotto Fun in 2014/2015!
Block Lotto Finale 2013-2014
To finish off 2013/14 Block Lotto, don’t forget to bring completed blocks for the May drawing. Also,
bring your completed quilt made from Block Lotto blocks you won. And If you made a quilt with your
own fabrics, there will be drawings for you to have the opportunity to win some neat prizes, too. I
have enjoyed doing the first COQG Block Lotto.

Christmas Quilt Raffle
Picture/ticket packs for the donation quilt
must be turned in by the June and July
meetings. We have done very well and
the members have stepped up and sold
tickets which is a great way to support
COQG. Of course, thank you to Zolalee
Gaylor for donating this beautiful quilt for
the purpose of raising funds for future
programs. We all want to win this work
of art!

PAT SPETH—June Speaker
Pat Speth began quilting in 1988 when she purchased a wool quilt batting
from her Grandmother's auction. "I checked out a stack of quilt books from
the library and fell in love with the patterns and designs, I knew I could not
stop with just one quilt."
Pat started working with 5 inch squares as a basis for her quiltmaking in
1993 after attending her first retreat. She was asked to do a program for her
guild in 1997 using the 5" squares, which gave her the push to explore new
uses and techniques for working with the squares. Pat, while working a full
time job, started on the book, Nickel Quilts in 1998 and was able to have it
ready for the publishers in June 2001.
She loves teaching the methods for working with the 5" squares, and sharing her quilts with others. After juggling her full time job and her quilting
for many years, Pat moved into a full time quilting career in July 2003. "I
have found my passion in life, and I can't imagine doing anything else."
COQG’s Deepest Sympathies go to BJ and Steve Davis and Mitch in the loss of Steve’s father.
We pray for comfort for your family in this time of loss.
