GUEST SPEAKER – SUSAN PURNEY MARK
As a textile artist, Susan has embarked on a life transforming journey
into the world of colour, design and pattern. Working with textiles has
become her method of self-expression and the focus of her methods of
communication. She has studied Design, Patchwork and Embroidery
with the prestigious City & Guilds Institute of London, England and has
studied with internationally acclaimed teachers/quilt makers. Susan has
also been awarded two Certificates in Art and Design and Textile
Design/Decoration from the Gail Harker Creative Studies Centre in Washington, USA.
Susan is an active member of the fibre arts community in British Columbia and is a
member of national/ international fibre and surface design associations and is a
qualified quilt judge.
Susan will bring her trunk show called Accent on Angles – Easy Strip Set Quilts and
her workshop is “Shattered Angles”. Beautiful works that are fun and easy to create.

In August we will be voting on an increase in dues. Please try and attend the meeting
as we will need a quorum for the vote. We are requesting an increase of $10 per year which
is an increase of 83 cents extra per month.
One of the most important reasons to increase dues is the fact that all expenses are
increasing and we haven't had an increase in dues for almost a decade. During that time, the
guild has seen an addition of a daytime guild that has drawn membership from the nighttime
guild. We used to have a membership of approximately 500 people and now we have a
membership of around 300 people.
Also, our guild works on a two year budget. We have expenses for the 2016 quilt show
already and we won't have any income from the quilt show for quite some time. We will be
using our reserves over the next many months. Please consider voting for the change in our
dues.

and take home projects for specialty items.

NO RULES CHALLENGE
NO RULES CHALLENGE
It is time for a challenge for those who don't like rules. This year's challenge
theme is Off-Beat National holidays. Many of us really enjoyed that special
exhibit at Road to California (who knew there was a National Mitten Tree Day
holiday?) and our imaginations are ready to go. Did you know that April 12 is
National Windy Day day?
Here is what you need to do:
1) Select an offbeat holiday;(No--it can't be Christmas, Halloween or Fourth of
July)
2)sign-up with Elaine Pappas-Puckett either at Guild, by phone (831-1072) or
via email [email protected].
3) Make your quilt and bring it to the October meeting. Make it whatever
size you want (12inches by 12 inches is just fine).
You can google off beat national holidays or weird national holidays for some
suggestions. OR, if you know you want to make a fall quilt or a Halloween quilt,
google words like "national pumpkin day" or "national ghost day" and find a
holiday that matches the quilt you want to make. Also, off beat can include
holidays like National Nurses Day, Flag Day,etc.

WORKSHOPS
AUGUST: Jacquie Gering. Want to quilt your quilts on your home
machine and maybe free motion quilting isn't for you? Come
discover the joy and creative possibilities of quilting with your

SEPTEMBER: Sharon Schamber will be joining just for machine applique on Friday
and machine quilting on Saturday.
Sharon Schamber is a prize winning quilter and dedicated teacher of exquisite
machine applique and machine quilting.
Sharon started her career in fine dressmaking, and her attention to detail is
amazing.
As a guild member, you can take a class with Sharon for only $40.00.

SUNSHINE AND SHADOWS
The sun has not been shining on Sunshine and Shadows this month.
We are very sorry to say that Nancy Thompson's husband, Tom, of
almost 55 years of marriage, passed away on June 2nd. He had been
battling serious health issues for quite sometime. Nancy is very
grateful for the concern and prayers shown by BCQG members and
appreciates their support and friendship. Nancy was the chairperson
for the Alzheimer Initiative and also for the Wounded Warrior House
Quilt Project. Our condolences to Nancy and her family.
Barbara McFarland's son, Casey, was in a serious car accident on June
13 th. He is in critical condition and in a coma at UCI Medical Center.
We hope for a good outcome for Casey and we are thinking about
Barbara and Craig, his father.
Our own photographer, David Kingston, was in a motorcycle accident
and had to be taken to the hospital. He is recovering nicely at home,
but we will miss him at our July meeting. Take care and be safe!

PHILANTHROPY REPORT
Philanthropy Report
Another very successful month for BCQG Philanthropy. We donated 77 quilts, 20 NICU blankets
and many other items. 43 of the quilts went to Operation Showers of Appreciation at Camp Pendleton.
Along with the baby quilts, we sent 40 hand-made, hand-embroidered toys, plus receiving blankets,
burpees, diaper pads, and onesies. 23 quilts went to children (12 to Orange County Child Abuse
Prevention and 11 to Trabuco Boys Town). 6 quilts went to UCI Oncology. 2 went to Royale Therapeutic
Treatment Center. 2 went to United Cerebral Palsy, where we are gradually providing quilts for the
residents in the group homes. 1 quilt went to a cancer patient. The NICU blankets went to Saddleback
Hospital.
We will be providing quilts for two baby showers at Camp Pendleton in August. We could use
some more baby quilts at the July Guild meeting. We always want to make sure there are enough quilts
for each mom to have one.
There is a need for patriotic quilts for wounded soldiers in Afghanistan. These quilts need to be
48”x78”, so that they will fit on a gurney or a cot, when the wounded soldiers are transported to the
hospital in Germany. The request went to many guilds, with the goal being 100 quilts. We are cutting
at least 6-8 kits from the patriotic fabric that we have.
In addition, we need men’s quilts. We have about a dozen kits cut using plaids. If anyone is
willing to help with these (very simple and quick), please let us know. The kits just include the fabric
for the top. Sometimes we add borders, so we have to wait with the backs and bindings, until we know
the final size.
Our next sewing day will be Monday, July 6th, at the Laguna Niguel Library. We’ll be there from
10:30 until 4:00. We will be working on the patriotic quilts, using our “surf quilt pattern”. Know that
you can come for as much of the day as you wish. There’s always a variety of work that needs to be
done. It is so inspiring to see the quilts and tops that are turned in at each sewing day.

July 2015 – Block #9

Unfinished Block Size: 20‐½” x 16‐½”
Finished Block Size: 20” x 16”
Supplies:
Center Block:
Cut one (1) 5‐½”x9‐½” piece, White for snow
Cut one (1) 9‐½”x9‐½” piece, Light Blue for sky or if you wish to combined the sun/sky fabric
background, cut (1) 11‐½”x9‐½” an omit the yellow strip, you may want to “applique” a sun as
shown in the picture below
Cut one (1) 2‐½”x9‐½” strip, Yellow for Sun
Rail Fence Blocks (Border):
A variety of 1‐½” wide strips. These strips may be 6‐½” when joining or sew longer pieces to be
cut into 6” square blocks when finished. You’ll need 6 blocks, 6”x6”, cut from these strips.
Sew blocks together, 3 for each side of the center block.
Assorted Fabric Scraps for Applique:
3”x1” Orange for Nose
3”x5” Red for Hat
9”x6” White for Snowman
Black/Brown for Arms
Black for eyes and Mouth
Directions:
Prepare Center Block by sewing the yellow (sun) strip to the light blue sky piece, then sew the white
fabric (snow) to the bottom of the block. Set aside.
Trace the applique pieces, using the templates, onto paper‐backed Fusible Web (Heat and Bond Light
was used). Or use your favorite applique method (e.g., needle turned, raw edge, freezer paper, etc.).
Please note that pattern pieces are reversed for using with paper‐back Fusible Web. Following the
manufacturer instructions, apply the paper‐backed Fusible Web onto the wrong side of each fabric. Cut
on the drawn line.
Place the prepared applique pieces onto the center block (Sky/Sun/Snow block) referring to the picture
for placement. Ensure that applique design fits within the background area of the block. Fuse applique
pieces. Using a favorite decorative stitch (e.g., blanket stitch, zig‐zag, etc.) sew around all applique
pieces. Sew 3 Rail Fence blocks to each side of the center block (see picture for directional placement).
Trim block to 20‐½”x16‐½”. Finish the snowman by adding eyes, mouth, buttons, etc.

Summer is here and that means hot weather is approaching fast. Since the summer is a slow time
for quilt shows…. It’s a perfect time to stay in the comfort of air conditioning and get some of those
UFO’s done, or start working on your entry for the BCQG Quilt Show in June 2016. Have a safe
and healthy summer and rest up… September is packed full of qullt shows to go to.

people are willing, we'll reserve a bus. Your e-mail is not a reservation, just a way for me to judge
whether or not reserving a bus is financially possible at a reasonable price.

Thursday the 8th is probably the best day to go. (I will be out of town, so Monica Shafer would
head up this trip)

January 21 - 24 , 2016. We would probably schedule the bus for Thursday, Jan. 21st.
