Machine Quilting UNLIMITED | November/December 2012 from the editor’s desk Last summer, raging wildfires hit many communities in the Western and Midwestern parts of the country as a result of record heat and drought. My own town, Fort Collins, Colorado, was not spared. Those of us living safely east of the foothills watched helplessly as the smoke billowed up into the sky for days, and one life and 259 homes were lost. As local, state and federal firefighters did battle with the High Park Fire, the community rallied around them, and around those whose homes were in danger. Signs honoring these heroes spontaneously appeared, while contributions, free meals, and housing for people and animals that were suddenly without homes were generously offered. The quilting community rallied around as well. Hundreds of quilts, quilt tops and blocks were donated at drop off points at the local shops. Volunteers sewed, and longarmers quilted the tops as quickly as they could. Every family affected by the fire received a quilt. Eight local firefighters lost their own homes, and the Rist Canyon fire department lost a station and quite a bit of equipment. The Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction, held once a year, gives a large percentage of their sales to the fire department. This year more art works, bake sales and many quilts made by area quilters were added to the sale. A pie, made with the stalks of rhubarb that were the only plants to grow out of the devastation of one home and garden, went for $1,000. Quilts were auctioned, with the purchase price going to the fire department and the quilt usually going to a family that had lost their home. It will take many years and untold effort to rebuild what was lost, but it is heartwarming to see how our community, and countless others around the country, can come together to lend a helping hand to our neighbors and those who risk their lives to keep us safe.
