These processes can produce unique and beautiful results. Our Featured Artist for this issue, Hollis Chatelain, frequently dye-paints the basic design of her amazing art quilts in monochromatic colors and then adds color and drama with an overlay of thread. She changes up her technique at times to dye fabric abstractly in various colors and studies each one to see what it might represent. She then thread paints the design elements that she discerns within the dyed fabric piece she has created. Editor. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kit Robinson On a much simpler level, I love to paint fabric. When the weather turns warm in the spring, instead of rushing to plant my garden, pull weeds or photograph pretty flowers, I get out my fabric paints and fold-up table and start combining colors and textures, scrunching up fabric or wrapping it around tubes and tossing salt crystals over it with wild abandon. There is something very satisfying about seeing vividly colored fat quarters drying in the sunshine on my driveway. I am quite certain that the neighbors who do not know me as a quilter are scratching their heads and wondering what is going on, but those who do toot their horns and smile as they drive by. Printer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Citizen Printing, Fort Collins CO I have a small room where I can hang each hand painted piece by a single pin, so I can see at a glance if there is a part of a fabric that will work for a quilt I am designing. Unfortunately, I sometimes fall in love with one (or several) of these fat quarters and I am unable to make myself cut it up. And sometimes, I just like to gaze at the colorful walls instead of getting anything done at all. Whatever fabric you like to use, I hope you let the beautiful spring colors inspire you in creating your quilts this season.
