Workshop: Gecko’s Passion
What a wonderful way to start off springtime; having our very own Cathy
to show us how to appliqué. When Cathy retired in 1995 she began to
quilt as a hobby. Since then she as developed ,Appliqué the Easy Way™
featuring her timesaving techniques. Her workshops feature her original
designs and published patterns. She has a brand new pattern to share
with us, ”Gecko’s Passion.” We are looking forward to her workshop. It’s
full with a waiting list. So she kindly added another day. We will have a
Friday workshop also. Those on the Thursday waiting list have the
choice or chance to be in the Friday’s workshop. Come join us for two fun
filled days.

By the time you read this message our year will be one-fourth over. Where does the time go?
Our March speaker, Sally Collins is a very gracious lady who makes awesome quilts. She has a
wonderful quote by Michelangelo (1475-1564) in her Mastering Precision Piecing book, “The
greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and
we achieve it.” Sally has set her standards very high and she continually aspires to reach them.
Her award-winning creations continue to demonstrate her achievements. During her lecture on
Thursday she gave us some wonderful information on how we, too, can achieve more perfect, as
well as beautiful, results. Her borders and techniques are fantastic. I think that she gave us the
inspiration to take that step to the next level and expect more of ourselves.
While I try to do my best, sometimes I’m happy with the results, other times I am not. Considering
all that Sally said, I am, once again motivated to reach for that next level. My quilts my not be
worthy of winning awards but at least I will have the satisfaction of knowing that it is my best; with
more practice I will become better. When I was teaching in the public school system I had a motto
in my classroom, “Always do your very best.” I expected this of my students as well as myself.
Even though the road may have bumps along the way, we can learn from our mistakes so that
next time the path will be a bit smoother. I experienced this personal satisfaction the other evening
while stitching on my Guild Block of the Month. After very carefully cutting two strips of fabric, I
proceeded to sew them together. I then pressed them, weighted them, let them cool, and then
measured. Yahoo!!!!! They measured perfectly. (You may have heard me all the way to your
home!) With new and invigorated confidence, I continued stitching more carefully than usual to
complete my block. While the finished block is not quite as square as I would like, it is better than
usual and it is really, really flat. I have the personal satisfaction of knowing that I did my very best.
My next block will be square!
It was so exciting for me, and I hope for you too, when I asked each of you to stand if you had
completed one quilted project. I would venture to guess that if we took an individual count that
there would have been at least 150 finished quilts this past month. What an accomplishment; we
should all be proud. The month of April is going to find us keeping track of what we have accomplished. Search back in your memory bank and figure out how many quilts and quilted projects
you have finished since January 1st, because we are going to keep track. So “Keep on Quilting.”
Remember to reach for those sewing needles because “We can quilt it.”
Lots of Hugs for All,
Joyce

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! To our Unsung Heroes for the Month of March. Lillian Rubright
and Irene Roche have done a marvelous job
of picking up door prizes from their special
store. Norma Millet works very quietly behind the scenes. She takes it upon herself to
do tasks that “just get done.” Many, many
thanks to you ladies for all that you continue
to do.
Congrats to Ingrid Vigeant and Betty ? for the
most finished projects since January.

Opportunity Quilt 2008
Our quilt "Around Our Neighborhood" has generated smiles
from everyone who sees it. We took it to Leah's sale in March,
to the Rusty Barn Quilting, Sewing, and Craft Show, Busy
Bears in Big Bear, and will take it to Glendale and to Cozy Cottage for the Spring Fling on April 4-6. We have also booked it
into several quilt guilds. We can always use help selling tickets.
We would like to take the quilt to community events that are not necessarily quilt-related (like
art shows, community craft shows, hospital benefits, etc), so if you know of a venue or if you
belong to a guild that is out of the area, and would like the quilt to go to a meeting, please contact one of the committee members: Kay Davis, Nancy Mastroianni, or Sally McKibben.
If you have not yet picked up your tickets, please do so at the April meeting.
Opportunity Help Needed!!
We really need help on April 5 at Cozy Cottage. We will have the quilt there all 3 days of
the spring run that the 7 Orange Co. shops are doing but we have no one to staff the
Saturday which should be the busiest day. I've sent out emails to the people who live in
this area but so far, everyone is busy. Please call one of the committee members if you
are available to help.

Quilts of Valor-Update
Saturday was a phenomenal SUCCESS!!!!!!!! It was just incredible. There is so much to tell it won’t
all fit in an email so you will have to go to the blog to check it all out: http://quiltsofvalorsocal.blogspot.com/ and to see the results you will have to go to flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24071860@N03/sets/72157604139546470/
The quilt tops are GORGEOUS!!!!!!! I could not have envisioned they would have come out so very
well. Truly fabulous. Very nice work, everyone. Excellent job by everyone who participated in any
way. When all do a little it truly does add up to a lot.
We received 789 blocks and we completed 25 quilt tops. The rest of the blocks will be sewn together
within a week and we are rocking and rolling. 7 of our core group that meets weekly could not join us
due to prior commitments and untimely family health issues. Our hearts are with them. 4 people were
busy cutting literally all day to square up the blocks and 3 or 4 people decided to work on other projects so our productivity was way off where it might have been. Good thing, if we were geared up in
full force we would have run out of blocks. (My personal nightmare.) Every thing happens the way
that it is supposed to and it turned out just incredibly perfect!
Thanks to everyone who sent blocks in from all over the US. We received blocks from Maine and
Florida and many points in between. You were all with us in spirit. When we placed all the completed
quilt tops on the table at the end of the day for the photo I was very moved by the site of 500 blocks
from all over the country. Basic Americans stepping up to support our American heroes was very
moving and inspiring. It gave me chills and I had to take a pause.
I said we would all be patient and we would all learn together and have fun. And we did. We will
make some adjustments and be much more efficient and productive at our next ‘Block Party” in April.
All in all, it was a GREAT and VERY SUCCESSFUL FIRST BLOCK PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!! Very nice work,
everyone. Excellent job! Thanks to all who participated.
