The island lies just 11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America. Though part of the South American continent, from a socio-economic standpoint, it is often referred to as the southernmost island in the Caribbean. With an area of 4,768 km2 (1,841 sq mi), it is also the fifth largest in the West Indies. Many believe the original name for the island in the Arawaks’ language was “Iëre” which meant “Land of the Humming Bird.” Some believe that “Iere” was actually a mispronunciation or corruption by early colonists of the Arawak word “Kairi” which simply means “Island.” Christopher Columbus renamed it “La Isla de la Trinidad” (“The Island of the Trinity”), fulfilling a vow he had made before setting out on his third voyage of exploration. Diversity is the status quo in Trinidad and Tobago. It is sometimes known as a “rainbow island” or more fondly “a callaloo” (local dialect for a delicious dish prepared by blending a variety of ingredients). There is a wide range of ethnicity, religion, and culture. 360 MAGAZINE 5 Ashford Castle 20 Istanbul Issue Contents Sinuous Identity|10 Cornbread |18 The Charming Bird|19 Anna Chromý 48 The Trip|26 88 Sanaa Lathan 116 6 360 MAGAZINE Futuristic |70 Mazda|71 2016 Infiniti QX50 |34 Wrangler Red Rock Concept |72 Talia Rose |41 Rolls-Royce Ghost |74 ESKA |42 Lulu Scout |76 Alex Honnold |44 Hotel Hassler Roma |78 The Camby Hotel |52 Joey Graceffa Enchanté Boutique Hotel |62 Breitling + Bentley |56 Bud Light |60 Louise Bourgeois |98 JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa |108 A Note From the President In life, we all encounter very difficult obstacles. As a young person growing up in Detroit, I was faced with many challenges: a dangerous environment, a drug-addicted, abusive parent, and tons of bullies. Yes, I was the teenager always feeling different and awkward – a skinny black boy with a light skin complexion, a cleft chin, a sharp nose and a unique sense of style. For many years, I would be soft-spoken and timid – until I realized that it’s okay to celebrate your uniqueness. It’s okay to embrace who you are and others who do not quite fit in. The quirkiness is something that makes us stand out and is what we should be most appreciative of and thankful for. After all, we now live in a period where personal style, sexuality, creed and color are increasingly becoming more intriguing and arguably more accepting. Although some of us might feel as if we still aren’t being accepted by society, we stumble upon someone like Joey Graceffa, who inspires us to embrace who we truly are. This young man is a true martyr for change: an extremely talented individual and digital influencer who has made a positive impact on millions – by just being himself. He, too, has been through a ton of difficult times (which he has publicly shared), but has made them his own life journey to persevere. This issue is dedicated to all the brave trailblazers that continue to pave the way, regardless of the hand they are dealt in life. They continuously tackle what is in front of them head-on, never allowing themselves to be devoured or drowned by inevitable mishaps or struggles that confront their daily lives. - VAUGHN LOWERY, President/Editorial Director Vaughn Lowery | Editorial Director Ashley Caputo | Associate Editor-at-Large Lester Guidry | Creative Director Crystal Wong | Art Director Stella Dugall | Special Assignments Haven Skye | Copy Editor Theodore Louis | Copy Editor Eiko Watanabe | Associate Editor Terry Dexter | Music Editor Brandon West | Music Contributor Montre Burton | Arts + Culture Editor Kenia Mazariegos | Life/Style Contributor Jackson Murray | Culture Contributor Ron Contarsy | Sr. Staff Photographer Marc Littlejohn | Fashion Director Apuje Kalu | Fashion Editor Matthew Anderson | Fashion Contributor Courtney Chenard | Fashion Contributor Eric Horton | Fashion Contributor Katie Meadway | Fashion Contributor Bob Cal | Fashion Intern Brian Perry | Hair Editor Justin Lowery | Interior Design Suzie Kim | Makeup Editor The Doc | Health Editor Rannon Harris | Entertainment Editor T’Quan Wilson | Entertainment Contributor Byron G. | Travel Editor Alonzo Demarco | Fitness Editor Nicholas Holt | Fitness Editor-at-Large Lakei Cannon | Fitness Contributor Alex Garibyan | Fitness Contributor Michael Denison | Business Manager Darryl Scipio | Legal Counsel Taylor Louis, LLP | Legal Counsel Brian Greer | SVP of Sales + Marketing Mike Pirone | SVP of Sales + Marketing Anthony Sovinsky | Account Executive Jason Gates | Logistics Administrator Chris Gates | Marketing Coordinator Raqiyah Mays | Dir. of Events Arthur Rutledge | Dir. of Promotions Jae Joseph | Brand Manager Dion Hickles | Brand Ambassador Glenn Murray | Brand Ambassador Stephen Goldsborough | Brand Ambassador Rothstein Williams | UK Brand Ambassador Mohammed Ismail | French Brand Ambassador Clinton A. Cornbread’s unflinching desire for recognition motivated him to utilize graffiti as expression. In contrast to tagging’s prior use as marking specific territory, Cornbread wrote his name all over Philadelphia to showcase that no one neighborhood is enough for an artist. It began with writing on school walls to grab a girl’s attention and grew into marking an elephant at the Philadelphia Zoo, and the Jackson 5 airplane to earn national fame. From there, Cornbread’s influence spread everywhere, inspiring artists from LA to Berlin. cornbreadthelegend.com 18 360 MAGAZINE SPOTLIGHT ON: The Charming Bird by Jaquet Droz The Charming Bird by Jaquet Droz is the winner in the “Mechanical Exception” category at the 2015 GPHG, which distinguishes watches that present a special mechanism or other original or exceptional horological concept. We arrived at the San Diego airport and were immediately swooped up by the car manufacturer representative in their flagship product, QX80 Limited (large SUV), and were off to our hotel. If you’re not familiar with the Kimpton Hotels chain, then you should definitely become acquainted with their Palomar 5-star hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter (hotelpalomar-sandiego.com). The luxury boutique oasis is fully equipped with rooftop pool and stunning skyline lofts: an ultimate urban retreat surrounded by theatres, nightlife and other attractions. After we unloaded and refreshed ourselves in our rooms, we headed over to the Nissan Design America (one of the first design studios on the West Coast) where we received a presentation from the lead designer, Hirohisa Ono. He unveiled two of our new favorite additions to their family: Q60 (the 2-door coupe is the only Infiniti made in USA) and Q30 (small hatchback). The newly presented lineup came with a new meaning to their tagline, “powerful elegance” – both models exuded sensuality and pure performance. 360 MAGAZINE 35 36 360 MAGAZINE As we gobbled a gourmet dinner with champagne glasses in tow, we were informed that Infiniti has received 10.5% increase in sales in the U.S. and 14% globally, largely due to the phenomenal Q50 sedan. Their QX50 is a small crossover entry-level vehicle. Back in 2007, this was originally revealed as the EX35 and then metamorphosed into the EX37. All models in this segment have stayed close to both the drive heritage and legacy of the former G sedan series. Our vehicle was AWD (rear-wheel biased) and exhibited refined lines and sleeker interior. The new appointments inside were classic with wood inserts, mixed materials and textures (both soft and hard grades). The top-level trim tops out around $43,350 and is worth every dime – complete with Bose system, moonroof, Bluetooth audio music streaming from your cell phone, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Mitigation and integrated coat hanger in headrest. With 325 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of torque, it’s a blast to drive. We crept up several mountains, effortlessly gripped winding roads and got a tad more action in Sport Mode. The comfortable, sporty crossover owns the road with 4 inches more legroom, 3.2-inch longer wheelbase, modified grill with new headlamps and back bumper with new tail-lights. With all trims purchased (Premium, Technology and Deluxe Touring packages), this vehicle will make quite an impression on a buyer in the market for performance, reliability and legroom. infinitiusa.com/crossover/qx50 360 MAGAZINE 37 martinmillersgin.com UNISEX CLOTHING FOR THOSE WHO STAY ABSURD! Music was always at home in the songs her parents would sing. Her early loves were the soundtracks from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Star Wars, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and a cassette recording of Duke Ellington’s memorial service off the TV. Songs of all stripes and shades jumped and swirled around her childhood. She especially loved records with lots of players on them, such as Quincy Jones’ Sounds...and Stuff Like That!!, with Herbie Hancock on piano and Chaka Khan on vocals. As she got older, ESKA threw herself into music – singing with the likes of Grace Jones, The Cinematic Orchestra and Tony Allen. Finished in later sessions with producer Louis “Slipperz” Hackett and all-round renaissance man Dave Okumu (The Invisible, Jessie Ware), her self-titled debut album ESKA presents an extraordinary sound-world, alive with inventive, beguiling instrumentation – along with her bold, dauntless lyrics. The album is a record full of wonder in itself. It is a record to pore over for hours, days, weeks, even a lifetime. It is a place where you can lose yourself in the details, and ESKA’s rich, warm ambition. It is a record made by an ordinary woman with an extraordinary talent, spreading her wings. eskaonline.com 42 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 43 Alex Honnold 30-year-old climbing phenomenon Alex Honnold exploded onto the climbing scene in 2008 after a free solo (a solo ascent without the aid of ropes, harness or safety gear of any kind) of Moonlight Buttress in Zion National Park, Utah. Since that time, he’s been the first to solo-climb established routes and broken numerous records for speed. Known beyond the climbing world – thanks in part to sponsorships and heart-stopping films of his climbs – he is now considered one of the most famous adventurers in the world. Alone on the Wall is a testament to the spectacular accomplishments that come with tremendous drive and self-control. Typically humble and understated, Honnold recounts in his own words the seven most astonishing achievements thus far in his meteoric career, including a free solo ascent of El Sendero Luminoso in Mexico, climbing the Fitz Traverse in Patagonia, and the only known solo climb of Yosemite’s Triple Crown. Meticulously following in the footsteps of the great climbers before him, Honnold practices a climb sometimes as many as a half-dozen times before attempting a free solo climb, and his extreme determination and sheer physical strength are astonishing. Honnold has much to teach about focus, managing fear, and the rewards of a life lived on its own terms (“As I’ve told countless folks who ask, if I have a certain gift, it’s the ability to keep myself together in places that allow no room for error”). His non-profit organization, the Honnold Foundation, seeks to help improve lives by funding simple and sustainable community projects. alexhonnold.com 44 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 45 48 360 MAGAZINE Anna Chromý For an artist with 60 sculptures in public places across Europe, it is astonishing that few people in the English-speaking world have heard of Anna Chromý. In 2012, the chairman of the British Olympic Committee, Lord Moynihan, invited Chromý to design the sculpture for the athletes’ Olympic Village. Now, the Chinese have fallen in love with her work and are honoring her with the first solo artist exhibition at the hugely prestigious National Museum of China, which fronts onto Tiananmen Square. This phenomenal compliment to a Western artist follows on from a 2005 visit where Chromý was invited as Guest of Honor at the Art Fair in Guangzhou. Her sculpture, Violin Player was displayed on all official announcements, posters and programs. Chromý is the quintessential European: a Czech who grew up in Austria and is now based in Monte Carlo. She is perhaps best known for a monumental 50-ton work in blinding white Carrara marble, the Cloak of Conscience. The marble comes from the same quarry that produced the five-ton block, from which Michelangelo produced his famous statue of David. annachromy.com 360 MAGAZINE 49 50 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 51 52 360 MAGAZINE The Camby Hotel The Camby Hotel will open in December 2015 as a new independent lifestyle hotel in Phoenix, owned by Host Hotels & Resorts, the nation’s largest lodging real estate investment trust. Since its conception (March 15, 1906), RR has always stood for elegance. Nowadays, it’s a British car with German influence. And, with a 6.6-liter V12 with dual turbo (48 valves) and direct fuel injection, producing 563 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque, this has to be the first time in the history of the brand which “driver’s appeal” has taken the front seat. At approximately 5,700 lbs, this car can go 0-60 mph in just about 4.7 seconds. The overall design of car is exquisite, yet the bodacious front chrome grill with LED headlamps gives the vehicle a ferocious look. Back of car was decked out with LED tail-lights and dual exhaust with chrome tips. 74 360 MAGAZINE We decided to take a quick 1.5-day trip to Silicon Valley from Los Angeles. It was only befitting to take our “Ghost” to the newly opened Parisian hotel in Los Altos, Enchanté Boutique Hotel: 19 rooms with various decor themes reminded us of a haunted castle. During our entire time beneath the windshield, we received tons of double takes, and of course, numerous supercars tried to race us – they knew what was under the hood. Since no two RR’s are alike, they didn’t know what we had inside of our bespoke vehicle: tremendous attention to detail – handcrafted materials, double-stitched leather, high quality silverware, veneered wood scattered throughout, double glazed windows (offered a very quiet cabin) with 2-inch thick lambswool floor mats in front and back (a must-try: driving with no shoes on). Each seat and passenger can independently control IDrive with trace screens on knob (once you put down the back armrest). Also, the technology/multimedia package goes a step further with DVD screens and retractable tables for laptops in back of front seats. It was like riding first class, with electric leg extensions as well as memory and recline settings at your disposal, alongside seat warmers and massages for all seats. Moreover, you can close the back suicide door with just a push of a button located near back pillars. Two-tone headliner, chrome trim and panoramic sunroof added flare. The entire cabin was flooded with a 600-watt 10-channel amplifier with 16 speakers and subwoofers, making Bluetooth streaming audio mimic a live concert series. Other admirable features include: night vision system via front dash 10.2-inch screen (great for dimly/moon-lit roads at night), on-board handbook, air suspension button (to lower and raise the vehicle), power reserve percentage odometer (which keeps the car in higher gear during straightaways for responsive performance) and dynamic cruise control with speed regulation (via fuel control or breaking feature). For the first time ever in the life of RR, many backseat riders would want to ditch their driver for an explosive, curve-hugging drive behind the wheel. The sticker price of the vehicle we test-drove was $382,825.00, and with immense luxury, performance and technology at your fingertips, it’s well worth it. rolls-roycemotorcars.com SPOTLIGHT ON: LULU SCOUT BIRTH OF A CHILD STAR Pop phenomenon Lulu Scout’s triumphant debut Uncovered penetrates with a huge arsenal of distinctive covers from worldrenowned musicians like Radiohead, Sia, Billy Joel, Keane, and Hozier. Captaining confidence, the 11-year-old songstress also includes a few original smash singles of her own. A collision of rock, pop, and electronica — thoroughly immersed in melody — comes with the emotional punch of Kate Bush at her peak: Cinematic breakdowns, stunning soul and style are all encompassed into one package where Scout’s idiosyncratic art-pop pushes the boundaries of majestic and swirling sound. One of the year’s great heartbeat records, it’s a salute to youth, both innocent and infinite, not since Amy Winehouse has retro-soul sounded so sincere. Teaming up with 12-year-old DJ Aiden Jude, Scout breaks barriers with a slick and swinging remix of her original track “Hurricane.” Infused with frosted peaks and mesmerizing sparks, it’s a rallying cry that hypnotizes the listeners: a place where her prominent vocals float above a dizzying supernova of treble-soaked synth-smashes. Proceeds from the purchase of the single would be donated to raise awareness for the needs of refugee children who have been displaced by conflict, religious persecution, and/or political oppression. Earlier this year, Scout won big at Access Broadway’s 2015 Cup Series, becoming the National Champion and garnering the Broadway Star Award for “Best Vocalist.” She has also stormed the stages of Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater and Asbury Park’s iconic Stone Pony, appeared as Young Fiona in Shrek The Musical, and soared high with her stirring rendition of the national anthem at national stadiums. What’s next for this breakout new artist? Safe money is on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by 2021. Catering: Special thanks to Juicy Factory Special thanks to Apex Photo Studios Having garnered over 605 million total views and 5.2 million subscribers, 24-year-old YouTube phenomenon Joey Graceffa is unstoppable: He’s now working on the second season of his web series Storytellers, and a murder-mystery series with YouTube Originals (both will be released next year). “I got my first camcorder when I was 8 and making home videos with my friends and cousins, and then, when I was 15, I got my first digital camera, with which I could now upload videos to a computer to start editing so that’s when I started YouTube,” says Graceffa. Graceffa was born and raised in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and moved to Los Angeles at age 19 – on his own. “I only had a few thousand dollars in my bank account so I was living paycheck to paycheck, just trying to make it. And then, my YouTube started growing, and I felt more comfortable each month,” Graceffa looks back. “It was definitely hard leaving everything I knew behind, but at this point, I was kind of over my home life 88 360 MAGAZINE Clothing: Avant Toi Leather Gloves: Bruno Carlo Chainmail: Global Effects Inc. 360 MAGAZINE 89 Knit Blazer + Jeans: Ron Tomson Top: Scott Langton Knit Scarf: Bracken and wanted to do something new.” 90 360 MAGAZINE This year, Graceffa released a music video for “Don’t Wait” – in which he kisses another man at the end – on his birthday (May 16), and two days later, he uploaded a video titled YES I’M GAY. And then, the very next day, his autobiography In Real Life: My Journey to a Pixelated World came out. “The biggest question on my YouTube channel had always been whether I was gay or not. And, it took me a lot of years to feel OK with who I was. And, a few months before I decided to write the book, I felt more confident with who I was, and I wanted to share my story and I used my book as a vessel to get my story out there, so I began the book process about my whole life, and coming out was just a part of that,” Graceffa elaborates. “And then, a few months before [the book’s release], I decided that I wanted to do a music video too. It was all just one big coming-out experience. ” Coat: Control Sector Hoodie: Stylist’s own Gauntlets + Chainmail: Global Effects Inc. 360 MAGAZINE 91 92 360 MAGAZINE In the book, he candidly talks about everything from his mother’s alcoholism and his brother’s autism to his own journey to self-acceptance. “It was very toxic and hard for me to even talk about, so none of my friends knew, and a lot of my family didn’t even know what I was feeling or going through. And, it wasn’t until I moved out and had met a friend (Meghan Camarena) who went through a similar experience and ultimately talked about it online that inspired me to share my story so I posted a video called ALCOHOLISM!, where I talked about my mom’s issues and how that affected me for the first time ever publicly,” describes Graceffa. “It was almost like a video diary where I got to talk about what I had been holding in for so long, and when I saw the reaction of how it helped people who were going through similar things, and they could relate to what I went through, it really made me happy that I was able to share my story, and inspired me to continue with that.” While his sister and father are very supportive of him and they all talk every day, his relationship with his mother is, according to Graceffa, still a work in progress. “She still struggles a lot with alcoholism, and she is constantly in another rehab and our relationship is always up and down,” he reveals. When asked how his brother Jett has been doing, Graceffa openly answers, “He’s doing good. Each year, he develops a lot more of communication skills and gets much better.” (In the book, regarding Jett, he writes: “It’s tough to know that I’ll never be able to have a real conversation with him. I want to be able to teach him things about life that I have learned, and pass along all of my big brother wisdom. I can still do that to a degree, but his life is going to be very different from mine and my sister’s, and the fact is that I know he will probably end up being the one to teach me lessons about getting past adversity.”) “I’ve learned a lot about patience and not having a fear of people who are different, and reaching out and being more open to people who have mental issues, and being friendly and treating them more like a human than someone to be afraid of,” adds Graceffa. “I grew up in a lot of special education classes so I was constantly surrounded by those people who have mental issues and other disorders like autism, Down syndrome and ADHD so it was something I was used to, but also when I had my brother, it became a lot more real in my life. And, it made me appreciate the things that I have, as well – just being able to have those communication skills that I know he doesn’t have. That just makes me appreciate life a lot more.” Outfit: Avant Toi 360 MAGAZINE 93 Top: THIS IS A LOVE SONG Shorts: AZUL by moussy Boots: pskaufman Gloves: Bruno Carlo Gas Mask: Global Effects Inc. While surrealism informed Bourgeois’ early endeavors, she bristled when critics labeled her a surrealist, preferring instead to identify herself as an existentialist. She often quoted existentialist philosopher JeanPaul Sartre and even named one of her sculptures after Sartre’s play No Exit, an act of homage from which this exhibition takes its title. Works presented include a rare copy of He Disappeared into Complete Silence (1947), early totem-like sculptures, and M is for Mother (1998), a drawing of an imposing letter M that conveys not only maternal comfort but also maternal control. nga.gov/content/ngaweb/exhibitions/2015/louise-bourgeois-no-exit.html 360 MAGAZINE 97 98 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 99 100 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 101 102 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 103 gwfg.com JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa Vaughn Lowery 106 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 107 108 360 MAGAZINE With many of its attractions in Las Vegas, another pleasant powerhouse is the newly renovated JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa in Summerlin, Nevada (located 14 miles northwest of the Strip). It arose on July 15, 1999 as one of the most sought-after, high-end off-strip resorts, erupting for approximately 270 million dollars. Its lush grounds sit on 50 acres with TPC (The Players Championship) professional golf course in close proximity, on-site casino (Rampart), 10 restaurants/ bars, 548 guest rooms, 79 suites and 100,000-square-foot event space (great for weddings, receptions, banquets and trade shows). Driving past the Strip was bittersweet, and some of us became a bit teary-eyed as none of us were remotely familiar with this resort. And, after all, it was a busy Saturday night with so many high-profile nightclubs, only a brief 15-minute taxi ride away. Upon ascending onto front entrance driveway of the Spa Tower, we were instantaneously greeted by jubilant staff and valet. The sun had just set as we entered our 2,950-square-foot, 2-bedroom and 2.5-bathroom suite. Beyond the foyer were floor-to-ceiling windows with two sets of integrated double glass doors, which opened to a wrap-around patio (fairly large outdoor table and chairs with 2 adjacent lounge chairs). Our 5th floor corner unit possessed a massive balcony, overlooking tranquil water creatures, towering palm trees, and the sister tower – the Palms Tower. Our suite had a fully furnished great room (couch, chaise, modern dining table, wet bar, and small eat-in breakfast area with additional seating). In celebratory fashion, we unraveled our citrusflavored Ciroc coupled with soda water, and began enjoying our deep jet tubs and modern glass door showers with sitting areas. Both rooms had separate entrances with French doors unveiling mounds of outside green space along with a fresh breeze. The master suite had a massive walk-in closet and a toilet with a bidet (a tingle of European class and culture). 360 MAGAZINE 109 Moments later, we gathered at the Carmel Room for an assortment of handcrafted cocktails, wine, appetizers, filet mignon, lobster tails and to-die-for chocolate soufflé in our private dining area. The highlight of our dining experience was when Terry Janjua (room manager) and Cindy Ellis (sous chef) greeted us with open arms. After engulfing in a world-class dining experience, we headed back up to our suite to regroup and then off to the Strip for a brief bar session at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and a quick couple of rounds of blackjack at Aria Resort and Casino, which led to an overnight, makeshift tournament at our on-site casino. Spa Aquae woke us up with a “nudge call” from their front desk. We rushed downstairs for one of the most exhilarating spa days we’ve ever had an opportunity to indulge in – Shirodhara Ritual – an 80-minute ancient Ayurvedic treatment. After selecting aromatherapy oil, we began our breathing regiment to calm our senses. Shortly after, the technician began to cascade sesame oil on our third eye (or forehead) for about 15 minutes. It concluded with a full body massage (literally from head to toe). With only 60 minutes till our brunch rendezvous at the Ceres restaurant, we took full advantage of the facility’s cold plunge pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and full-size fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment. Moreover, we marched onto Ceres, only to be enthralled by a room filled with live jazz tunes and a full-service gourmet buffet. Some of us built our own omelette while others ordered smoked salmon off the menu with cream cheese and a bagel. The entire arrangement had us enamored – floor-to-ceiling windows showcased a pool, garden and waterfall. We swallowed coffee and began to retreat to our rooms for a day of much needed relaxation. 110 360 MAGAZINE With an immaculate and luxurious campus as well as loads of amenities like day spa and 24-hour casino, this property has regained its title as a “must-stay” destination. marriott.com/hotels/travel/lasjw-jwmarriott-las-vegas-resort-and-spa/ 360 MAGAZINE 111 makersmark.com Sanaa Lathan Dress: Pedram Couture Earrings: Cristina Sabatini Model Pants: Theory Watch: Domeni Co. 114 360 MAGAZINE Sanaa Lathan Eiko Watanabe Photographer: Elton Anderson Stylist: Apuje Kalu Hair: Candice (Cece_son) Hudson Makeup: Saisha Beecham Model: Justin Shaw Catering: Special thanks to Party and Sushi Special thanks to Golden Box “It definitely was outside of my comfort zone. It was really a wonderful, kind of, dream role, in terms of the fact that I got to play so many colors,” Tonynominated actress Sanaa Lathan, 44, says of her role as Leah Vaughn in the latest movie The Perfect Guy. (“Sorry, I’m just finishing my breakfast,” she quickly adds with a laugh as she talks with her mouth full.) In the movie, Leah meets “the perfect guy” Carter (starred by Michael Ealy), and their relationship goes really great – until everything starts going really wrong. “She had the whole romantic aspect as well as the fear aspect that are trying to come into her own and taking control of her destiny,” says Lathan. “I’ve had relationships – whether it would be maybe friendships, work relationships or dating relationships – where I’d had a certain idea about somebody and then they turned out to be something completely different from what I thought,” Lathan says of her personal experiences. “I certainly have not had anything close to what Leah has experienced with Carter. But, what I can take away from that is, it just takes a long time to get to know somebody, you know. And, sometimes, people jump into things. Certainly, my character did.” Here’s how Lathan defines “the perfect guy”: “I don’t think anybody is perfect. But, for me, it’s somebody who has integrity, somebody who is easy to laugh, to have fun, somebody who’s passionate about something in this world, whatever that would be, their job or family, and somebody who is a good communicator.” While we will get to see her in various films next year (including Now You See Me: The Second Act), Lathan is also going to star in and executive produce the movie adaption of the Flyy Girl book trilogy (“We are in an active development stage so we’re working on adapting the book into a script. [The release] will all depend on when the script is done and then when we’re gonna do the production”). 360 MAGAZINE 115 Sanaa Lathan Coat: Sandro Bustier: Victoria’s Secret Pants: Proenza Schouler Model Suit: Anthony Franco Shirt + Tie: Hugo Boss Shoes: Magnanni This one might be another role that is outside of her comfort zone as her character Tracy Ellison is a successful business woman, believing that money is always a huge factor that leads you to absolute happiness – and Lathan doesn’t share the same mindset. “For me, it’s about quality of life, it’s about people around you, it’s about the work you are putting out there, it’s about your family and friends. Money can make things easier, but it doesn’t necessarily equate happiness,” Lathan strongly asserts. 116 360 MAGAZINE In addition to the Flyy Girl project, Lathan is moving to the behind-the-scenes aspect of the film industry. “I’ve been in the business for like, 20 years, and I grew up in the business as well because both of my parents were in the business, so I’ve always contributed to the development of projects and been kind of vocal in most of the movies that I’ve been in,” Lathan passionately elaborates. “This is really a natural next step that I’m developing and envisioning projects that I wanna see out there. It’s just an extension of what I’ve been doing already.” Coat: Sandro Belt: Shokra Bustier + Garter + Thigh Highs: La Perla Shoes: Stella McCartney 360 MAGAZINE 117 Dress: Michael Costello Earrings: Cristina Sabatini Lathan grew up traveling between New York and Los Angeles, and went to college to major in English and then went to grad school for acting, trying to find her talent and polish her craft. “I would say [to my younger self], ‘Keep working hard and keep trusting yourself because your gut is always right,’” Lathan confidently says. “‘Performance’ is really just about the expression of my art and my vision. It’s just about the vehicle that brings the inner story out.” 118 360 MAGAZINE Other than cementing herself as one of the Hollywood’s most prominent forces, she’s also been a devoted philanthropist, who recently started the Sanaa Lathan Foundation. “We’re starting out with getting scholarships to foster girls. I was inspired by and have been a big supporter of the HerShe Group, and they are a great organization that helps foster girls and stops the cycle of what’s got them into the foster care – everything from how to apply for a job, how to have high self-esteem, workshops to their necessities of life, you know, all that kind of stuff, so I’ve got to do my own version of that,” explains Lathan. On another note, Lathan loves cooking, as well. The possible premiere of her own cooking show? Unlikely. “I don’t know if I necessarily wanna be talking and cooking – it’s like juggling and talking at the same time,” she says, laughing. “And I know that’s not an easy task but I love watching them and I do love cooking. I just made great breakfast.” Well, “the Sanaa Lathan cooking show” might not be happening, but it’s pretty obvious that her future endeavors are going to be breathtaking and fulfilling: “I don’t do like a 5-year, 10-year goal – I just wanna continue to live in the moment as well as work on my projects and do good work, put it out there, and love my family and friends, and continue to laugh.” Sanaa Lathan Bustier: Vintage Shark Tooth Collar Gold Necklace: Charles Albert Jewelry Alchemia Cut Out Cuff Gold Bracelets: Charles Albert Jewelry Skirt: Zara Shoes: Christian Louboutin Model Briefs: Calvin Klein 360 MAGAZINE 119 givenchy.com LUXURY THAT’S APPROACHABLE, AT LEAST WHEN IT’S IN PARK.
