***NATIONAL SPECIALTY WINNER***
We all know club member BJ Parsons DVM as a renowned breeder of English Setters. What a lot of folks don’t
know is that she also owns and breeds Irish Red and White Setters. In September, as an owner/handler, BJ
won the equivalent of the breed Super Bowl when her boy, Fergus, won the IRWS National Specialty.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WIN OF A LIFETIME!!!!!!!!

2012 has been a great year for our club!!!!! Congratulations to all the dogs who enjoyed success at all levels
and a LARGE congratulations to their owners and breeders for a stellar year of accomplishments. Plus, a
huge “Thank-you” to ALL club members for being caretakers and guardians of the breed - English Setters
deserve the best owners and there is no doubt they have them!!!!!!
Here are some critical dates for 2013:
March 2, 2013 – HD/HDX Day. Bobbie Sigmund and Dave Branik will be our judges. And of course, having Dave again as a
judge means that Sandy Moody will be coming back to help out!!! Having the event earlier next year will help assure we
have birds. You need three HD passes to get an HD - a JH pass can count as one pass (under 4 different judges). See:
http://www.esaa.com/Events/HuntAndField.html We will of course have BBQ again, so bring a dessert if you’d like. Thanks
once again to Deb Hallock for the use of her farm.
March 29-31, 2013 - Specialty weekend. The 2012 Specialty weekend in Concord seemed to be the right venue at exactly
the right time of year - so we’re doing it again!!! A Supported Entry on Friday the 29th will be followed by back-to-back
Specialtys on Saturday and Sunday. Conny Helms and Cyndi Taves will once again co-chair the event.

“We’re ready for the HD Test”
National Champion Fergus continued from page 1….
“The national specialty was moved indoors after a morning of cold Wisconsin rain. Dogs from several states and Canada were
present (including multiple entries from breeders and owners in North Carolina!). It was great to have the top three ranked
specials competing against each other in the same ring. Fergus (GCH., Can. CH. Shireoak Spring Twister, JH) was on his game
as usual, although he needed a little convincing to gait at MY speed!
With the ring filled with specials, it’s always a breath taking sight, no matter the breed. Beth Speich whittled down her selections and finally pulled Fergus and me out front. The process of moving dogs into position for the other awards, including Selects and Awards of Merit seemed to take forever, since we all know ‘it’s not over until it’s over”. In the end, she pointed to
Fergus for Best of Breed!
Fergus is the only IRWS to win a group this year. He was Best of Winners at the 2010 IRWSAA national specialty, and Select
Dog at the 2011 IRWSAA national specialty.
While winning the breed at the national specialty was enough to make the trip home shorter, we also won at the all-breed
shows with every dog that we took with my bred by dog winning a major by going BOS over a special and my specials bitch
was BOB over a top twenty all breed bitch.”

Congratulations to DUCHESS - the FIRST English Setter in the history of the
American Kennel Club (AKC) to simultaneously hold the titles of Grand Champion
and Master Hunter
GCH Editions Navigator MH, HDX (Duchess)
Every hunting pass and every show point was put on Duchess by
her best friend, Frank Luksa (who, prior to showing Duchess, had
never been in the show ring - ever). Frank was cheered on the
whole way by his wife, Maryella and daughter, Hunter. They all
were cheered on by the entire English Setter family.
Sincerest CONGRATULATIONS for making history!!!

2012 CCESC Specialty Weekend was the BIGGEST in club history
The decision to move our Specialty to the Concord, NC show site and expand it meant the CCESC was moving into uncharted
territory. But when it was over, we had left an indelible stamp of success on the weekend. A single dog won both Specialtys and
went on to win the all-breed Best In Show both days. Exhibitors who were informally polled thought the venue was great and
said they would come back. We had fabulous trophies and the raffle netted the most money ever. The BBQ lunch was downright
exquisite! We had the largest entries ever and had majors every day - here are the entry numbers: Friday Supported Entry 7-8-5
-5 (4-3), Saturday Specialty 10-11-8-5 (4-3), Sunday Specialty 10-11-7-5 (5-4)
But, the bottom line can’t be measured: People said they had a genuinely good time and they thanked us for a well-run weekend.
Well, we thank all of YOU who came and invite you all back in 2013 - same time, same place!!!!!!!!! We appreciate all of you and
look forward to seeing you again!!!!!!!
There’s a lot of people to thank for helping to make it happen:
Show Co-Chairs Conny Helms and Cyndi Taves were the driving force behind the logistics. They made it happen. Katrine Kruders’
artwork in our ads caught the eye of a number of exhibitors and the chair she hand-painted for the raffle was highly coveted.
Jeanne and Dick Straub’s motorhome was, as always, a welcome gathering place for lunch. Their graciousness is bottomless.
The raffle was managed by Helen Porter. Greg Corey sold $460 in tickets to friends, associates, and customers. His biggest customer was Auto Parts of Shelby, who bought $100 in tickets. WOW! Lori Rimmer’s benevolent donations of statuary and artwork
brought in a lot of lookers and a slew of rafflers. Her donations were among the finest we’ve ever seen and generated a ton of
sales. Thank-you so very much, Lori!!! JoLynn Athorp’s persistence brought in a number of donations from various vendors which
appealed to all breeds. CCESC members rounded out the donations with some elegant, practical, and attractive donations. A big
Thank-You goes to everybody who bought raffle tickets. Some of you went home empty-handed and some of you were multiple
winners, but all of you donated your bucks in the interest of the club and the club’s projects - and for that we say: THANKS!!!!!!
The raffle generated $1,032 - that’s a record!!!
JoLynn Athorp managed the Trophies and they were commented on a lot - people thought they were some of the nicest they had
seen in a long time!! Jolynn made a number of trophies herself and donated them. She worked hard to find other trophies which
were appropriate for each winner. And once again, some of Lori Rimmer’s donations of artwork were used as trophies and made
some winners very, very, very happy!!! Lori, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity!!!!!!!
SEE YOU ALL AGAIN REAL SOON!!!!!!!

OSCAR HUDSON.... And I’m so pleased to say that Oscar is BAER,
Thyroid, and Elbows Normal, along with GOOD Hips..... the results
are now documented on the OFA database.
Not only is Oscar the first AKC Champion for LIZABETHAN, but I
believe he is the first English Setter in AKC history to win the
Group on his first day out. He finished with great style and panache
in a short span of 6 weeks, piloted all the way by his lovely handler Lori Mowery. I am so proud to be Oscar’s breeder. Oscar is co-bred
by Conny Helms and Karen Corey. Thank you to Sealy, Am, MBIS/RBIS

Pictured left is Reese (Editions Retroactive) who came out for
the CCESC Specialty weekend and had some fun. She was
WB over a nice bitch entry and also AOM over several very
nice specials at the second specialty. Reese is out of Bikini,

Ch. Set'r Ridge's Solid Gold. Reese is bred and owned by
Karen and Greg Corey and Conny Helms.
Introducing NEW CHAMPION Editions Waikiki. Pictured
right, Quinn had a very short and successful show career. He
won 7 points from the puppy class in very limited showing by
9 months. He was shown only two weekends as an adult. His
first outings as an adult were at the CCESC specialty weekend
in April. There he won back to back majors, a Best In Sweeps
and a BOS In Sweeps. He came out in July for one weekend
and won another major to finish. All of his points were
breeder/owner/handled by Karen. He is the first US Champion
for his Mom, Bikini, Multi BIS, BISS Ch. Editions Radioactive
and is sired by Ch. Bittersweet Nite N White Satin. He's bred
and owned by Karen and Greg Corey and Conny Helms.
Pictured left is Atticus, who always seems to be smiling.
Hugging this adorable boy are equally adorable sisters
Avery and Parker, who just couldn’t seem to get enough of
him.
Atticus (AKA “Smarticus” and “Moondoggie”) whose daddy
is Stoli (MBISS Gch. Honeygait Wilsonlake On The Rocks)
and whose momma is Bikini (MBIS, BISS Ch. Editions Radioactive) obviously got some his good lovin’ genes from his
parents, especially his momma Bikini, who recently earned
her Therapy Dog title!!!!!

JT (BJ's Silverline Whydontwejustdance) is pictured left.
He recently finished his CHAMPIONSHIP with four majors
and two specialty wins, including Winners Dog at the Phoenix English Setter Club specialty just before the 2012 national specialty. JT finished from Bred By except for 1 puppy
point.
I am so happy to report that TJ and I passed the Delta/Pet Partners Evaluation on Saturday, November 17th. This evaluation
grades the handler and the dog - and I managed to pass, too! We
will now register as a team and will be joining the Reading Dog
program here in the Roanoke area. Thanks to all who helped us
along the way.
And, at the ESAA National in Phoenix, TJ was awarded the Goodtime Silk Teddy Award as the BOS to the English Setter of the Year
GCH Oakley’s B’Dazzled. TJ was also the East Central English Setter
winner as well as Runner-up for Sporting Dog Group. TJ’s co-owner
Lindsey Kuhn was runner-up for the beautiful new Dare-To-Dream
Owner Handler Award. 2011 was a dream year for team TJ and the
awards were icing on the cake.

Hunter (JH) qualifying pass at the age of 7 on 1013-2012 at the Armenia Hills Pointing Breeds Club
in upstate South Carolina under judges Phil
Hearne and Karen Hearne. Photo right.
On 10-14-2012 Truman earned his second straight Junior Hunter (JH) pass under judges Dr. BJ Parsons and Joe
Stringer at the Armenia Hills Pointing Breeds Club. Once again he was handled by Martin. Photo left.
On 11-10-2012 at the Sandhills Pointing Breeds Club hunt test in
Jackson Springs, NC, Truman and his bracemate, a German Short
Haired Pointer named Jenny, were having a tough time finding
birds. It hadn’t rained in a month, it was hot, and there was only a
slight breeze. Truman found the Quail bag hanging from a tent
pole at the observation point and pointed it beautifully, but it
didn’t count!!! With 4 minutes left, Judge Adams told me to call
him in to some brush we were standing in. I called, and True
headed my way - but halfway to me he turned and headed at a
right angle away from me. Recalling the words of Judge Dave
Branik at the CCESC HD/HDX test in April, I said (never once
looking at the judge): “I trust my dog” and started following him.
Truman then got three points in the final two minutes and earned
his third consecutive JH pass under Judges Carol S. Parron & Ross
Adams. I never knew a dog could have so much fun!!!
