REPORT FROM
THE PRESIDENT
Last year the Hong Kong Tennis Association celebrated its
100 years of Tennis. We embark into our second Century
of operations with high hopes of further developments in
the world of tennis and to better serve the tennis community
in Hong Kong.
The end of 2009 saw the East Asian Games held in Hong
Kong as we experienced one week of exciting competitions
at Victoria Park. Unfortunately the weather played havoc
to what was to be a perfect tennis week and demonstrated
to us once again the imminent need for a covered tennis
stadium in Hong Kong. Since becoming President of HKTA
nine years ago I have incessantly been lobbying the Hong
Kong Government to update the sports hardware of our city
but unfortunately we are still nowhere near realising this
dream. I would hope that by the time Hong Kong does get
the honour of hosting the Asian Games in 2023 we will be
endowed with a covered tennis stadium that not only will
be worthy of the Games but will also allow Hong Kong to
host high level professional tennis competitions.
Another item on my wish list is that during my presidency
we would see an ATP or WTA professional world ranking
event return to Hong Kong. After a hiatus of ten years, it
is time that the population of Hong Kong are treated to
genuine world class competitive tennis. The Tennis Patrons'
Association have done a good job by hosting the Ladies
Exhibition event at the beginning of each year and keeping
the Hong Kong public interested in top class professional
tennis and all of us are thankful of their fine efforts. It is
now time to have world ranking competitions back on our
Centre Court.
My nine years as President have been most satisfying. To
me working with the dedicated team of Council Members
has been most rewarding as together we put in so much of
our precious time into the game we all love. All working pro
bono these gentlemen and ladies have to juggle with family
times and work commitments to help the HKTA. From the
bottom of my heart I would like to thank all of them both
present and past; without them the Association would not
be in the strong position it is today.
I have seen many changes in the past nine years; the most
significant was the taking over of our HKTA Tennis Centre
at Kowloon Tsai Park. Thanks to the support of the Leisure
and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and financial
assistance of the "Sir David Trench Fund" (STDF), Kowloon
Tsai is now set up as a high-performance tennis training
centre with gymnasia, video analysis areas, library and lecture
areas and coaches offices. I am pleased to report that the
courts will be resurfaced and the lights will be upgraded in
2011.

Another fact I am proud of is the increase in our bank
balance, during the past nine years the accumulated capital
reserves have risen from just under 2 million in 2001 to
HK$14,399,843 by March 2010.
This money is being held in reserve for use when required
to help our top players to achieve their goals and to further
other projects that will help make tennis better in Hong
Kong in the years ahead. I would especially like to recognise
the hard work of our Honorary Treasurer Mr. Jeremy Pong
who has worked enthusiastically to ensure that our finances
remain in such a healthy state.
During 2010, the Executive Committee (EXCO) and the eight
Committees of the HKTA met on numerous occasions to
ensure that all the programmes of the Association were run
efficiently. The achievements of these committees during
the past years are all listed in the individual committee
reports. I will however briefly cite a few achievements that
deserve special mention.
Development Committee meet many times throughout the
year to fine-tune this pyramid, bringing in new ideas designed
to encompass all the development programmes of the HKTA
from grass roots to full time players. During 2010, new
programmes have been added to this pyramid as seen below.

Programme
Professional coaching at all levels is essential and a
fundamental necessity to produce good players. To make
certain that the pool of good coaches is full, the Coaches
Development Committee under the caring eye of its
Chairman Dr. Derek Ling, together with the Education and
Qualifications Committee headed by Mrs. Diana Wong
have been organising the ITF endorsed Coach Certification
Scheme for the past nine years. We currently have 354
licensed coaches to serve the tennis community in Hong
Kong. These coaches can be seen all over Hong Kong not
only teaching HKTA-run programmes but also many of the
thousands of people who love Tennis and always want to
improve their game recreationally.
Our Tennis Development Pyramid is the graphical
representation of developmental programmes designed to
show players what their path in tennis could be. The

Another exciting innovation from the Development
Committee is the "Kindergarten Mini Tennis Tour" where
coaches and staff visit Kindergarten Schools and demonstrate
mini tennis to the children to entice them into the game.
This operation has been highly successful. We are confident
that many of those who enrol will continue and will take
up tennis as their preferred sport. The schools programmes
at different levels have always been one of our most successful
projects in bringing tennis to the children of Hong Kong.
Our objective in promoting tennis to the younger children
is not just to teach them how to play and hit better forehands,
but to endow them with the interest to keep playing for the
rest of their lives. To provide a "sport for life", a recreational
sport that would help children develop their character,
discipline, attitude, interpersonal and problem-solving skills,
as well as good sportsmanship. Of course we also hope that
amongst these players, we may one day find a world
champion.
The Elite Committee is tasked with training for excellence,
to achieve this the Committee under the Chairmanship of
Mr. Henry Chan spent many hours in meetings with the
coaches and staff to discuss new ideas for the continued
improvement of the programme, and how the HKTA could
best produce better players for the future. The National
Training Squad (NTS) have all their training sessions at the
HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park. This venue with
its gymnasium set up and areas for players when the weather
disrupts play is an ideal set up for the search for future
champions. The hiring of a full time fitness coach earlier
this year has further enhanced the programme. There have
been encouraging results from the players during the year
and these are fully listed in the Elite Committee report. I
must however make special mention of Zhang Ling our
number one player. In 2010 she reached a high Women's
Tennis Association (WTA) world ranking of 197 and as a
result made her first appearance at a Grand Slam in September
when she played in the US Open qualifying event.
The Tournament Committee under the leadership of Chairman
Dr. David Ho have had a very busy year, in all events the
numbers of entries for tournaments have gone up on average
by 15%, especially at the younger age group. Whilst this
is extremely gratifying it has been a major headache for the
Committee to try and find sufficient venues to run the
enlarged events and in several cases the time for running
the tournament had to be extended. I would like to
congratulate the Committee and staff for their ingenuity
in tackling this problem, although until there are more tennis
courts in easily accessible areas of Hong Kong this problem
will not go away and will in fact get worse given the increase
in numbers of people wishing to play competitive tennis.
We are experiencing a severe shortage of facilities to run
tournaments.
It has been a busy year for the HKTA Executive Committee.
As you are aware this Committee takes on and performs the
business of the Council in between council meetings. As
Chair of this Committee I wish to offer my gratitude to all
EXCO members for their hard work over the past year.
One very positive note to report from this year has been
the establishment of a new communication channel with
the Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the
HKSAR. Members of EXCO were invited by this office to
go to meet with them and to discuss how tennis could help
enhance relationships. Following a most enlightening meeting
the Ministry has issued an invitation for Council to organise
a visit to their headquarter on Kennedy Road.

My heartfelt thanks to all the hard working and dedicated
council officers, council members and committee members
that I have had the privilege to work with during the year,
I have really appreciated all the support I received from you
all.
I offer thanks to the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and
Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Sports Institute,
the District Boards, the Sports Federation and Olympic
Committee and many other bodies the Association have
collaborated and had communication with over the past
year.
Another PR activity in 2010 was the commencement of an
Inter-city Tennis Association Tournament between Hong
Kong Tennis Association, Jiangmen Tennis Association and
the Macau Tennis Association. Confined to council members
only, a team from the HKTA travelled to Jiangmen for a
weekend tournament. The competition was strong and I am
mildly disappointed to report that Hong Kong finished in
bottom position. The atmosphere was excellent and a great
deal of goodwill ensued. This event will now be held annually
as part of the joint initiative of the 3 cities to develop tennis
in this part of South China. The next event in 2011 will be
held in Hong Kong.
My thanks also go to the Chairpersons and Tennis Convenors
of all our member clubs, your support have helped us make
tennis one of the most popular ongoing sports in Hong Kong.
I also appreciate the support that you have been giving to
the highly successful HTKA Leagues. I am truly grateful and
I look forward to your continuing support in the coming
year.
I could not close this report without thanking the staff of
the HKTA, a really dedicated and hard working group that
would be hard to emulate.
Finally to all tennis players in Hong Kong old or young,
experts or beginner's....... thank you for supporting the
Association and playing the game we all love;
Tennis our Game for Life.
We have as an Association a very solid staff and committee
base, these are a group of dedicated persons who all work
hard and well together in pursuit of several main objectives,
namely:
• To promote the game of tennis to all
• To maintain the standards of the game to an international
level
• To nurture talented local players to compete in regional
and international competitions
• To raise the standards of tennis by organising local, regional
and international competitions
• To ensure that Tennis is a sport that is available to anyone
who wishes to learn to play or who wishes to compete
at any level
Our AIM is to make "Tennis a Game for all, and a Sport for
Life".

Year in Review
The role of the Executive Committee (EXCO) as well as
fulfilling its Terms of Reference is to ensure that the Mission
Statement of the HKTA is followed. Meetings are held
throughout the year whenever any issues need to be
addressed and resolved between council meetings.
Our teams and players both junior and senior also took part
in many overseas events during the year ranging from ITF
Junior team events and ATF 14U and ITF 18U junior ranking
tournaments to Grand Slams, Davis Cup and culminating
at the end of the year in the Asian Games.
2010 has been a very busy year for EXCO, the council
members and staff. The most significant international events
of the year were the two International Tennis Federation
Junior World Ranking tournaments one in January and one
in October and the Davis Cup against Pakistan that although
drawn as an away tie, due to civil unrest in Pakistan it was
held in Hong Kong in early March.
Many meetings have been held between EXCO members,
Executive Staff and government departments concerning
several important matters including the need for a covered
tennis stadium, the possibility of running a professional tour
event in Hong Kong and the bid for the Asian Games in
2023.
The HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park is now fitted
out with two gymnasia, video analysis room, a meeting/
library room and office areas for the full time coaches. This
has all been made possible by a grant that was requested
from the Sir David Trench Fund and further work in 2011
will be carried out with money from this grant, when the
courts will be resurfaced and lighting will be upgraded.

• To ensure a good line of communication and understanding
between EXCO, the General Manager and members of the
HKTA office and coaching staff; the operation of the HKTA
is divided into six main streams: coaching, development,
tournament, corporate affairs and administration as well
as the HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park. Each
department has a competent manager and enthusiastic
and good staff who report to the General Manager.
Major activities in 2010 have included:
• Working with the committee chairs and departmental
managers to prepare and adopt the HKTA Annual Budget
for 2010/2011 and to prepare the yearly plan for
2011/2012. In the yearly plan, budgeted activities and
expenditures were laid down in detail; financial control
has been exercised in a prudent manner accordingly.
• Our international relationships remain good. Close contact
is established with the parent body, the International
Tennis Federation. Our relationship with China and the
Chinese Tennis Association is healthy and a yearly InterCity Tennis Association Tournament between Jiangmen,
Macau and Hong Kong has been established. In 2010, the
inaugural event was held in Jiangmen when several EXCO
members attended, the next encounter will be in Hong
Kong towards the end of 2011.
• IASS funding requests were prepared for 25 athletes, these
were all athletes who had attained results during 2009 2010 that gave them the required Elite Vote points to be
eligible for HKSI funding for training, overseas tournaments
and equipment. The activities and payments to the athletes
receiving IASS funding from the previous year also needed
careful monitoring as there are strict guidelines set as to
how the money can be utilised.
• Regular communication is kept and meetings are held
with the General Manager of the HKTA to ensure that the
staff follow the guidelines set by the HKTA Council, and
the various other committees for all the programmes and
activities organised by the HKTA. The General Manager
helps the members of EXCO fulfill their duties and liaises
with the LCSD, the HKSI, the International Tennis Federation,
government departments and other sporting bodies on
a day-to-day basis.

• EXCO will continue to encourage the sourcing of players
from overseas to enlarge and enrich our local pool of
talent, however given the improved funding and training
conditions in China and in our neighboring Asian countries
it is becoming more difficult to find players who wish to
train in Hong Kong. We did during the year assess several
youngsters, but found that their talent was no better than
that of our local players. Although our top priority will
always be to these Hong Kong players, we will however
continue to search for eligible and talented players from
overseas as we have found that having these highly
motivated players in Hong Kong and on our programmes
spurs on the local children and encourages them to improve
their own results.
Our aim is to train players to eventually win medals and
glory for Hong Kong whether they are local, or those from
overseas eligible to represent Hong Kong.
• Despite our comments and requests to the LCSD regarding
the fact that the public should not be compromised by
losing the courts when a professional event is taking place;
as there was no other alternative venue offered, the 9 side
courts at Victoria Park were used as a tented village during
the professional event in January. As a result of this the
newly laid courts were damaged and remedial work had
to be carried out, this meant that even more time was
spent minus a number of the courts at Victoria Park. An
area is needed for sponsors and the public when a
professional event is held and unless an alternative area
is found this problem will continue. This issue was one
that has been discussed many times with government
bodies but it appears that until a new stadium is built it
will continue to be a problem; EXCO together with council
will continue to discuss this problem with the LCSD.
• One issue that EXCO have been discussing for several
years with various government bodies is the lack of a
covered stadium in Hong Kong. During the East Asian
Games in 2009 this lack was sorely felt when the matches
were delayed for more than one day due to persistent
drizzle. Tennis unlike many sports cannot be played unless
the court surface is perfectly dry and at this time there
is not in Hong Kong, one covered stadium or court that
can be used for international play. We have put forward
to the government the need for a larger stadium preferably
with a retractable roof, along with all the requirements
for running international and professional events in Hong
Kong but at this point in time it appears that this will only
happen in the future, and, if the bid for the Asian Games
is successful.
• Last year we were requested by the HKSI to put forward
our suggested alternative points system for tennis, this
we did as under the current points system, it is unlikely
that Elite Vote status can be attained next year or in the
near future. Unfortunately we found out earlier this year
that there would however be no change in the points
system for tennis. This is a major problem for us as there
are not sufficient events that our players can compete in
to get those elusive 4 points results. As tennis is a sport
where there are such huge prize money pay outs the
competition in the sport is very high, and a small territory
like Hong Kong that does not even have a professional
tennis tournament anymore has a very small chance of
getting players to the level that is required for winning
medals at the Olympics, Asian Games or becoming a Grand
Slams Champion. We are however confident that we can
get players to a high level in Asia and amongst the top
hundred in the world and having the support of the HKSI
would certainly help us attain that. We will therefore
continue to discuss our Elite Vote point problem with the
HKSI and hope that it can be resolved in 2011. We feel
that tennis is unique, given the popularity of the sport,
the number of persons playing the game, the amount of
prize money involved and the difficulty in making it into
the top stream of players. Therefore the points should not
be counted in the same way as for the other sports, most
of whom have more available events with eligible points.

• Although we do not have the Elite Vote support of the
HKSI, the HKTA has continued with the training of the
Elite players. Our number one player Zhang Ling had a
successful year by reaching 197 in the WTA rankings and
this has confirmed our wish to continue with the
programme of support for the players who we feel are
capable of gaining world ranking points on the ATP and
WTA tours.
• In 2011 there will be no World or Asian Games for our top
players; however they will be kept busy with the Davis
Cup, the Federation Cup and the ITF Junior Team events.
EXCO together with the relevant committees will be kept
very busy ensuring that the rules for selection are in line
with the HKTA guidelines and that any player in Hong
Kong wherever he or she trains, who is of a suitable standard
to play in these events, will be invited to join the training
squad. We will also be sending as many of the junior
players as possible to compete in ITF 18 and under and
ATF 14 and under events around the world and in Asia,
and our hope is that 2011 will be the year when many
of our players have a big breakthrough in world ranking
points at both the junior and senior levels, and then perhaps
we can garnish those elusive Elite Vote points that would
see Tennis back as an Elite Sport in 2012.

want to see professional tournaments back on the sporting
calendar as much as the Association does.
• Every year one problem keeps returning and that is the
perennial problem of keeping our best young players in
the game so that they will continue to be available to
represent us at a high international level. The lure of
generous scholarships that are available from US colleges
is always there for the players who have managed to climb
reasonably high in the ITF world junior rankings and
unfortunately there are not many parents who are willing
to allow their child to take time off from school to play
tennis or to delay their college entry. As a result of this
many of our best players leave Hong Kong, and then,
because of college tennis commitments it is difficult to
have them available to represent us. EXCO and the
Education and Qualifications Committee have spent a
great deal of time discussing this problem and looking
into all the various options for keeping the juniors playing
and how to look after any players that have come to the
end of their playing career.
All of these matters along with the numerous day to day
affairs of the HKTA as directed by the Council have kept the
EXCO members busy throughout the year.
Terms of Reference
i. The Executive Committee is a standing committee of
the HKTA Council and is empowered to exercise all the
powers and perform all the duties of the Council on any
matter within the Council's jurisdiction where decisions
have to be made and actions taken between regularly
scheduled Council Meetings or where specific
responsibilities have from time to time been delegated
to the Committee by the Council
• One of the future aims of the HKTA is to bring back to
Hong Kong a professional tennis tournament. Meetings
have been held with representatives from WTA, ATP and
Hong Kong Government however as the current facilities
are not of a high enough standard to host a high level
professional event this is an aim that may have to wait
for a few years until a suitable stadium with a covered
option is available. There are currently five ATP events and
seven WTA events in Asia. The fact that Hong Kong is not
one of the cities hosting one of these events is of great

ii. It will also make decisions within the policies, strategies
and agreed budget of the Council, conduct programme
evaluation and perform internet audits
iii. The Committee will assist in the development of
agendas for HKTA Council Meetings and will review
recommendations from the President
iv. It will make recommendations to the Council on matters
of future policy, government and external relations, media
policies, conflicts of interest issues, strategic planning,
funding and resource allocation, as well as on matters

Year in Review
The Coaches Development Committee (CDC) is committed
to the upgrading and maintenance of the overall standard
and competency of all HKTA-certified coaches. During the
year, we have continued to explore additional learning
opportunities for coaches, this included diverse activities
such as organising ITF Worldwide Workshop Reviews and
sending a group of coaches to the 16th Asian Games in
Guangzhou.
In the year ahead, the CDC plans to further develop the
Coaches' Mentorship Programme, as well as initiating a job
placement programme to cater for the welfare of all HKTAcertified coaches.

Continuous Professional Development
Programme
The "Continuous Professional Development Programme" is
one of our major programmes and it represents more than
a hundred workshops and seminars that have been organised
since 2003. In 2010 we invited professional experts in tennis,
physical fitness, sports psychology, and sports injury as well
as sport science and general sports theory, to run on court
sessions and off court meetings for our coaches. I would
like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks

programme. The Rules of Tennis workshop was useful to
assert the coaches' knowledge in the rules of tennis.
Mr. Jeremy Pong, the speaker, connected well with the
audience due to his remarkable knowledge of tennis, and
all of the attendees found the topic very interesting and
useful. This seminar has been adopted by the CDC as one
of its yearly events.

tennis expert), Dr. Si Gang Yan (HKSI Sports Psychologist),
Dr. Raymond Li (HKSI Sports Physiotherapist), Mr. Jeremy
Pong (Chairman of the Officiating Committee), Mr. Ricky
Chan ( HKTA CL3 Professional Coach and Vice Chairman of
CDC), the Instructors from the Auxiliary Medical Services,
and last but not least Mr. Ray Kelly (HKTA Director of
Coaching & Development) and the HKTA National Coaching
Team.
Workshops and Seminars
During 2010, the CDC has kept its focus on the coaches'
needs when it comes to planning the Continuous Professional
Development Programme. Two first aid workshops and three
physiotherapy seminars have been delivered to help coaches
raise their awareness of the physical well being of themselves
and the players; five workshops concentrating on technical
skills, and two on coaching aspects were given to strengthen
and upgrade their professional capabilities. The workshop
regarding psychological perspectives of elite players gave
an insight into the inner part of the elite development

Among those events mentioned above, the two seminars
given on the "2009 ITF Worldwide Coaches Conference
Review", by the HKTA's former Elite Coach, Mr. Alistair Todd
gained an overwhelming response from the coaches. Todd's
workshops covered the topic of "Developing Biomechanical
Aspects within the serve". Recognising our coaches' thirst
for knowledge, the CDC immediately arranged a re-run in
February.
Dr. Raymond Li's seminar on "Immediate Management,
Treatment & Prevention of Common Sports Injures Related
to Tennis" held in late January, and Mr. Chris Chan's
"Management of Common Shoulder Injuries in Tennis" were
also enthusiastically received by the coaches, as their topics
truly served the coaches in their practical needs. Both
Dr. Li and Mr. Chan are not only top professionals in their
field, but also very experienced, having worked at many
prestigious international tournaments, such as the Beijing
Olympics, and the East Asian Games.
In May, Mr. Ricky Chan shared his experience of tennis team
coaching; and in September he offered a workshop on the
technical aspects of coaching.
2010 Tour to Guangzhou Asian Games
During the Asian Games 2010, the CDC organised for a team
of coaches to go to Guangzhou. The group of ten persons
left for a 2 days 1 night tour on the 17th November and
attended 2 days of the tennis event competed by 22 Asian
countries. The tour turned out to be a very rewarding event
and the members enjoyed seeing some of Asia's top players
in action as well as cheering on the Hong Kong, China team.
ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach Certification
Scheme
Running in parallel with the Continued Professional
Development Programme, the CDC also works closely
with the EQC to present the ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach
Certification Scheme. The Certification Scheme was
inaugurated in 2002 and since that time the CDC has taken
on the responsibility to run the coach training courses.
During the past 9 years we have run over 60 week-long
tennis coaching training courses of various standards to
prepare local coaches to sit for different levels of the HKTA
coaching qualifications examinations. There has been one
Advanced Coach Course, 10 Development Coach Courses,
29 Elementary Coach Courses, 24 Mini Tennis Instructor
Courses and 12 Pre-courses. All of the examinations are
conducted by the overseas appointed ITF qualified instructor
Mr. Jacques Hervet, and are strictly monitored by both the
CDC and the EQC.
In the Coach Certification Scheme, it is our ultimate goal
to train more qualified tennis coaches so that they can
increase the tennis playing population in Hong Kong and
at the same time, promote a higher standard of play to their
students.
HKSI Elite Coach Seminar - Shanghai
The 18th Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Coaches Seminar
was held in Shanghai in September this year and the Chairman
of CDC being the nominee of the HKTA and CDC had the
pleasure to attend this significant event with some 160
candidates and elite coaches from HK and Mainland China.
The seminar was a huge success and through the excellence
of the presentations, the participants developed a great
understanding of "Enhancing Recovery in Sports" and its
applications to the performance of elite athletes. The
information will be shared in a seminar in January next year.
Coach Benefits
The CDC places a great deal of focus on the benefits for our
licensed coaches and has endeavoured to promote the
licensed coach status to the tennis public. We have been
actively liaising with potential sponsors to provide tailormade services for the coaches, which include discount
purchase of equipment as well as receiving sport
physiotherapy services at a special rate.

The CDC actively promotes the status of the HKTA licensed
coaches in all of the HKTA programmes as well as on public
courts. The policy of the HKTA is that all coaches who work
in the HKTA programmes, whether fun days, grass root
training, national squad training or elite performance training,
must possess a valid HKTA coach licence. We have also
introduced a banner advertising programme that enables
the licensed coach to promote this unique identification on
all private and public courts.
The CDC has established an effective communication channel
for disseminating useful information from the ITF, HKSI
and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).
This ensures that the coaches can be updated with the
latest news in coach education and government policies
regarding training, facilities and programme management.
The Committee has also held active discussions with the
LCSD to bring in a policy that will require HKTA licensed
coaches to run their tennis programmes as well as providing
a reciprocal arrangement for their community coaches to
attend the HKTA workshops and seminars.
The CDC is very concerned with, and gives much consideration
to, the potential risks that may occur during tennis coaching,
therefore we provide a 3rd party liability coverage to all
licensed coaches who are coaching on the tennis courts all
over Hong Kong . There are currently 354 licensed coaches
that are covered by this annual policy.
The Online Coaches' Registry has proven to be a success as
it has achieved the purposes of introducing our licensed
coaches to the general public as well as helping to raise the
profile of our team of HKTA-certified coaches by increasing
the options and choices of qualified coaches that are available.
The Registry is now well established and has been working
well and effectively, in promoting our coaches to HKTA
members and the tennis public and facilitating people in
their search for a well qualified coach.
The content of the HKTA Coaches' Library has been enriched
to assist in the continual development and upgrading of
coaches in Hong Kong, the library includes some new
collections of essential publications selected by the CDC,
as well as DVDs and videotapes from the ITF and wellestablished tennis companies and academics. The latest
issues and developments in the world of coaching will
continually be added to the library to enable our HKTA
licensed coaches to keep up with changes in the international
world of coaching.

Year in Review
Over the past twelve months, the Development Committee
oversaw the progression of participants in a number of key
programmes such as the expansion of the HKTA Junior Squad
and the initiation of the Kindergartens Mini Tennis Tour,
which, for the first time, is making mini tennis more accessible
to children in the pre-primary school age range. Overall,
our HKTA Junior Development Programme continues to be
one of the most comprehensive grassroots sports
development platforms in Hong Kong benefiting over 18,000
youngsters annually.

The HKTA Junior Development Programme is one of the
largest sports developmental programmes in Hong Kong.
Many tennis programmes ranging from fun days, mini tennis
events, tennis training and regional ladder matches, to open
competitions are just a few of those that are organised
throughout the year. The hundreds of classes organised in
the primary schools, the 1,000 players in the Junior Tennis
Squad Training and the outstanding results of the Talent
Selection Programme and the Young Athletes Training are
only some of those which marked the success of the
Committee in the year 2010. We must express our sincere
thanks to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department
(LCSD), the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation (HKTF), Prince,
Yaumatei & Tsimshatsui Recreation and Sports Association
(YTRSA), LONGINES, and all the licensed coaches, teachers
and players who have rendered so much support to us during
the year.
Junior Tennis Squad
The Junior Tennis Squad embraces all levels of junior players
and is the breeding ground for Hong Kong's aspiring young
tennis talents. More than a thousand players have undergone
systematic training in 72 Squad Groups at 28 venues all
over Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories; they are
supervised by a group of experienced HKTA licensed coaches.
As well as the tennis training, in order to promote matchplay and enrich players' experience, we have put in place a
ladder system in each squad through which short-set matches
can be played at times convenient for the players. This
arrangement has turned out to be extremely effective and
beneficial to training and development. Players not only are
able to apply what they learn from training in a match
situation, they can fully develop their potential, better
understand themselves and then make improvement in the
future. The highlight of the year for the squads is when the
top ranked players meet to play the annual Year-end Ladder
Playoff.
In 2011 and looking further forward into future, the Junior
Tennis Squad will continue to serve as an important channel
for the growth of a broad base of tennis-playing youngsters
in Hong Kong and will also facilitate their advancement to
higher levels of training.
Talent Selection Programme
The Talent Selection Programme is aimed at providing
sponsored coaching to enhance training for a handful of
selected players. Each year we invite over 100 successful
players from local competitions and training squads to attend
the assessment. They participate in a series of tests from which
our professional coaches can identify their talent and select
those "best of the best" to receive extra training from this
programme. The Talent Selection Programme has proven
to be very successful since its inauguration in 2007. Under
the directorship of the HKTA full time coaches, each of the
player can fully maximise their potential and develop an
overall solid game. Most of the players showed a marked
improvement soon after they joined the programme and
went on to achieve more success in tournaments.
In 2010, 140 players attended the Talent Selection Assessment
Day. 12 potential juniors were identified to receive free
weekly focus/"one-on-one" training. The programme is a
great incentive to encourage the participants to show
improvement, meet targets and get results. Players are
supervised by a Panel who report quarterly to the Committee
and players must complete an agreed number of training
hours per week and achieve results in local tournaments in
order to be eligible to continue with this training in the next
quarter.
Young Athletes Training Scheme
Since the Young Athlete Training Scheme was launched in
2006 the HKTA has set up 4 regional centres to provide
training to young players with potential who may find it
difficult to travel to the focus development centres like Talent
Group. Through open assessments that are held every 6
months, 72 players are nominated to join this programme.
The purpose is to lay the stepping-stones for these potential
players to advance to the
junior elite training. We
therefore ensure that the
in-charge coaches who
are appointed to head
up the programme are
experienced in working
with top juniors. The
player selection and
training programme are
carefully handled by the
Director of Coaching and
Development and his coaching team, and are monitored by
the Committee to ensure that those with "champion
potential" are spotted and given a progress pathway for their
tennis development.

Guangzhou Interport Challenge
In August, two teams from Guangzhou - Guangzhou and
Yuexiu - consisting of 32 players aged 8-14, competed against
local players from the HKTA Junior Tennis Squad and Young
Athletes Training Scheme (YA) in a two-day Interport Junior
Tennis Challenge.
The friendly match ended with the Junior Tennis Squad
defeating Guangzhou on opening day, while a combined
Squad/YA outfit finished in an exciting draw with the visitors
from Yuexiu on the second day.
Even though most of the Interport participants were by no
means novices in the sport, friendly matches such as these
are important in furthering their game, allowing them to
improve their competitive edge by giving them the
opportunity to compete against players from neighbouring
cities or regions.
HK Tennis Stars of the Future 2010
6-14. As the participants advance to a higher stage, their
skill level and knowledge of the game will also increase
correspondingly. The programme finally culminates with an
age-group competition in Stage V, and provides an excellent
opportunity for players to display their newly acquired
prowess. Those who exhibit a keen talent for the game may
also receive invitations to join various HKTA junior squads
to further their development.
The 2010 Hong Kong Tennis Stars of the Future was
sponsored by LONGINES and Dunlop, and subvented by the
LCSD. Some 900 fresh new faces have picked up a tennis
racket for the first time, all of whom will hopefully, in time,
learn to appreciate the time-honoured virtues of tennis and
come to embrace it as "a sport for life".
Mini Tennis
Tennis is great fun, but not if the court is too big, the net
too high, the balls too lively and the racket too heavy for
children aged 9 and under. Mini tennis is the solution to
this problem.
With the generous sponsorship of Prince and the HKTF, the
Prince/HKTA Mini Tennis Promotion Scheme is now in its
19th year, over 10,000 primary school students have benefited
from this programme during this time.
The Scheme consists of five components, namely School
Visits, Teachers' Training, District Inter-schools Competition,
the Annual Championships and the Bridging course. The
2009/10 Scheme has continued to receive overwhelming
response; 44 Primary Schools have entered the Scheme and
460 juniors have played for their schools in the District InterSchools Competitions.
First launched in 1992 with the help of the former French
Open champion, Michael Chang, the Tennis Stars of the
Future is an invaluable player identification programme and
helps to nurture talented local tennis players at a young age.
The programme has for years attracted thousands of
newcomers to the game of tennis. It is well structured with
five progressive stages to provide a systematic tennis training
programme at the entry level for kids between the ages of

we currently have thousands of students who are receiving
and have received mini tennis training under the School
Sports Programme jointly run by the HKTA and the LCSD.
We also organise the Regional Mini Tennis Training Programme
which provides mini tennis classes at different levels. Another
initiative are family mini tennis classes during weekends that
allow parents to participate together with their children and
to give them guidance on how to enjoy playing and hopefully
choose tennis as their "sport for life". During 2010, over
1,500 mini tennis players have played in the Regional Mini
Tennis Training Programme, and every year the number
continues to grow.
This year, the Mini Tennis Demonstration work has been
rebranded and packaged as "Mini Tennis Tour". The HKTA
have contacted many kindergartens to arrange a fun and
interactive mini tennis day for those young children aged
5 and under at their schools. The response of the children
has been great and the principals and teachers appreciated
very much the extra values that have been brought to their
school life by playing mini tennis. The Mini Tennis Demo
Team will continue to work hard and visit more kindergartens
and put rackets into the hands of the enthusiastic young
children in the coming year.
Tennis-For-All
The meaning of "Tennis-for-all" is all embracing and remains
as one of our most popular open enrolment programme.
Many people immediately think of this programme when
they want to learn and improve their tennis skills as
some 100 tennis classes are open bi-monthly at different
public courts for beginners and experienced players to develop
hand/eye coordination, techniques and motor skills that are
required to play good tennis. Junior players with potential
and talent for tennis will be selected during these exercises
for "feeding-in" to the pyramid of the Junior Development
Programme. In 2010 approximately 447 classes have been
organised and they are professionally conducted by the
HKTA licensed coaches.
HKTA Corporate Tennis Training Scheme
In addition to providing tennis training programmes at the
community level, the HKTA also caters to the corporate
sector in Hong Kong. This scheme offers tailor-made and
budget-priced tennis courses for players of all ability levels,
all taught by HKTA licensed coaches. Corporations have the
option of choosing their preferred time slot and venue, and
the scheme's flexibility and cost effectiveness make it an
ideal sporting activity for the hectic lifestyles of today's
business executives.
Community Tennis
The LCSD, the HKTF and the HKTA have been working in
partnership to increase participation across all sectors to
fulfill our task in broadening the base of tennis participation
in the territory.
In 2010, we have continued to explore channels to promote
community participation in tennis, and to find ways to foster
partnerships with different sectors for the promotion of
community sports. We have been working with schools, the
district offices and non-government organisations in the
community, in order to promote tennis-related activities
and create a sustainable sporting culture in Hong Kong.

On February 6, 2010, the HKTA and the YTRSA jointly
organised a "Mini Tennis Fun Day" at the Kwun Chung Sports
Centre. The objective of this event was to promote mini
tennis to the young children in Yau Tsim District. The response
was very good and we were delighted to see a group of
children of multi cultural backgrounds coming together to
play mini tennis. We were very pleased to be one of the coorganisers for this significant event and in particular thanks
must go to the YTRSA for allowing the HKTA to run follow
up courses at their clubhouse in Yaumatei. We have named
the follow up programme as "Mini Tennis Talent Training"
and hopefully we can nurture some young champions from
this programme in the near future.
As of November 2010, a total of 36 community tennis clubs
are affiliated with the HKTA, the highest number of
community clubs amongst all sports in Hong Kong. In
collaboration with the LCSD, the HKTA also promote various
tennis initiatives to the tennis community such as tennis
fun days and a Coach Licensing Scheme through the network
of community tennis clubs. It is our hope that by increasing
the opportunities for community tennis to flourish, the
overall tennis population will also grow and more people
can benefit from the game.

Year in Review
The objective of the Education And Qualifications Committee
(EQC) is to safeguard the interests of the tennis playing
public by setting a benchmark for coaching quality at different
levels and upgrading the coaching standards in Hong Kong.
In 2010, our focus remained on assisting coaches in Hong
Kong to further develop their careers in the field by gaining
higher levels of qualification. We continued to work closely
with the Coaches Development Committee in the
implementation of additional coach certification courses.
A total of four Mini Tennis Instructor courses, three Elementary
Coach, one Development Coach, and two Pre-Courses had
been organised during the year.
As of 30 November, 2010, 354 licensed coaches are registered
coaches under the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme. The
renewal rate remains at a very satisfactory level of over 70%.
The Committee is delighted to see that the Licensing Scheme
has been widely supported by governing bodies, as well as
clubs, coaches, and players.
In the coming year, the Committee looks forward to
developing a closer partnership with all the stakeholders and
those who are interested in players' education, by
collaborating with the Elite Committee to liaise with local
universities, overseas college coaches, and the Hong Kong
Sports Institute (HKSI) to help our student-athletes excel
both on and off the court.
ITF-endorsed Coach Certification Scheme
We have maintained a good working relationship with the
International Tennis Federation (ITF) and local and overseas
tennis professionals. By tapping on their views and expertise
we have deployed new initiatives to support the growth of
the Certification Programme and Tutor Training. Specifically,
additional Pre-courses had been held for potential coaching
candidates to help them to acquire a better understanding
of what was required in the certification courses and to
allow them to better equip themselves for the examination.

In November a unique 3-day on-court seminar "Gain coaching
skills" was organised and conducted by Mr. Ricky Chan, tutor
of the Certification Scheme. This is a new initiative that
aims at improving the technical skills required for delivering
effective tennis coaching lessons. During the past year,
4 Mini Tennis Instructor Courses, 3 Elementary Coach Courses,
one Development Coach Course and 3 Pre-Courses have
been conducted. 190 coaching candidates have undergone
this ITF-endorsed certification scheme.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Jacques
Hervet, ITF expert and examiner, and Mr. Ricky Chan for
their dedication and immense contribution to the Certification
Scheme, their ardent support and hard work in training
coaches in Hong Kong since 2002. Their devotion to the well
being of tennis is most commendable.
HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme
Initiated by the EQC in 2003, the HKTA
Coach Licensing Scheme serves to provide
a quality benchmark for accessing the
overall standard of coaches. The Scheme
helps to fulfill the market demand for
standardisation and recognition towards
coaches' qualification, and opens a learning
window for the coaches to keep abreast
of the latest coaching know-how and technology in the
game of tennis through a continuous educational programme.
The Scheme has been recognised and adopted by the LCSD
since 1 October 2008. It then became the policy of the LCSD
that any new tennis coaches who wish to register with them

as part time coaches for the community tennis programmes
must possess a HKTA licence. This arrangement has further
promoted the Scheme to the coaches and players at the
community level, thus enabling the HKTA to further realise
its aim in safeguarding the teaching quality of coaches in
Hong Kong.
In 2010, 180 out of 253 licence holders gained the prerequisite
credit points and have successfully renewed their licences
for another two years, representing a 71% successful renewal
rate and making a total of 354 licensed coaches registered
as of 1 November, 2010.
Player Education
The Committee runs an active programme to support players'
education and has formed partnerships with local and
overseas colleges for the development of players' education
and for the grooming of future sports leaders. It is hoped
that more of our high calibre players will be admitted to
suitable schools where they will receive appropriate support
in both academic studies and in the pursuit of excellence
in tennis.
In August and September, two focus group meetings were
held. We invited two former top juniors Gilbert Wong and
Venise Chan to share their experience in playing intercollegiate
league and to inform the group how they obtained the
opportunity to become a scholarship player in the States.
In 2011 we shall strive to broaden the network through
which our players can meet and be seen on court by the
college coaches from Hong Kong and overseas. At suitable
times we will nominate players to be present at some of
the major international and regional showcase events.
The player information on the website has been restructured
to facilitate the overseas colleges to search for potential
players for their college teams. The online player profiles
serve efficiently in providing players' information, in addition
to those provided on the ITF official website. Player videos
are also available online, enabling viewers to see players in
action on the website. Interested coaches are able to make
contact with the HKTA for individual details. This initiative
has proved to be very useful and effective and will continue
to benefit the National Training Squads in 2011.

Panasonic Sports Scholarship Programme
Year 2010 was another period of great progress for the Elite
Committee as our players continued to make their mark on
overseas tournaments with pride and distinction. Having
attained a career-high WTA Tour singles ranking of No. 197
earlier this summer, Zhang Ling was accepted to compete
in the women's singles qualifying at the US Open 2010.
This made her the second player from Hong Kong to make
an appearance at Flushing Meadows since the legendary
Patricia Hy-Boulais did so back in 1987. In 2010 she won
her 6th career US$10,000 pro circuit singles title in Tarakan,
Indonesia, she also gave a good showing when she reached
the women's quarterfinals of the 5th East Asian Games at
Victoria Park late in 2009. Another elite full time player
Jessica Yang also attained her highest world rankings when
she reached 418 earlier this year. At the junior level, Christy
Chan and Eudice Chong's Asian Tennis Federation 14U
rankings continued to rise and they were ranked No. 2 and
3 respectively in August 2010. We currently have 11 boys
and 10 girls on the ITF World Junior Rankings and 9 boys
and 12 girls ranked on the Asian Tennis Federation 14U
Rankings.
Nineteen year-old Wu Ho Ching was one of ten recipients
of the inaugural Panasonic Sports Scholarship Programme
organised jointly by the SF&OC and Shun Hing Group.
During the next eighteen months each successful athlete
will receive HK$150,000 in financial assistance to help them
in their endeavours to excel in their respective sports. The
aim of the Scholarship Programme is to assist athletes in
Hong Kong to better prepare and strive for the best possible
results at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
All American - Venise Chan
Also congratulations are due to Venise Chan (University of
Washington) who became only the second collegiate player
from Hong Kong to earn Division I All-American honours in
women's singles. She also was a recipient of the Arthur Ashe
Junior Sports Scholar Award. According to the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA), in order to be named an All-American,
a player must have received a Top-16 seeding in the NCAA
Singles Championships, reach the round of 16 in the NCAA
Singles Championships, or finish in the Top-20 on the final
Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Venise, matched all
three criteria.
ITF Junior Team Events
National Training Squads
The selection for the ITF Junior Team Events was done under
the close supervision of the Elite Committee. We endeavoured
to ensure that the procedure of selection was well defined
and executed in an open and fair way. Our ultimate objective
was to send the best team to compete in the Junior Davis
Cup, Junior Fed Cup and the World Junior Tennis (WJT).
The players in the National Training Squads (Tour, NTS, Junior
NTS and Feeder Squad) had a smooth and fruitful year
training at the HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park. The
Centre is now fully furnished with fitness equipment and
all the necessary tools that are needed for running a
comprehensive and effective elite training programme. The
Centre serves as the training base for our elite programmes
as well as HK Team training such as Davis Cup, Fed Cup and
the ITF junior team events.
In 2010 the WJT Boys' 14U team after being drawn to play
against the 5th-seeded Thailand and the 4th-seeded China
in the group were finally assigned to the 9th-12th playoff.
They then embarked on a three-match winning streak,
beating Sri Lanka 2-1 in the final round robin face-off before
registering successive 3-0 shutouts against Syria and Malaysia
in the consolation event to finish in the 9th-10th place
playoff. Unfortunately due to heavy rain that caused
cancellation of the match they had to settle for joint-9th
place. The WJT Girls team of Eudice Chong, Christy Chan
and Michelle Lo (Coach Leo Liu) came 8th after playing a
series of exciting and close matches in the Asia/Oceania
Zone Qualifying. Hong Kong was one win away from
qualifying for the world group but the 2nd seeded Australians
proved too strong in their quarterfinal showdown.
In the Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Qualifying, after the
first stage the 16U team of Kelvin Lam, Brian Yeung and
Kevin Wong played very well to beat Malaysia, Kazakhstan,
and New Zealand and eventually finished in 9th position.
The Junior Fed Cup 16U girls had some tough early round
matches and finally wrapped up this event by beating
Singapore 2-1 to finish 15th overall.
This year, the NTS has undergone some major changes that
will enhance the programmes and ensure that players with
commitment, the right attitude and clear objectives to excel
on the tennis courts, will advance and gain good results at
international tournaments, and ultimately become medal
winners for Hong Kong. The design of the programme is
for weekly group and individual focus training and includes
approximately 8-12 overseas tournaments per year. Training
hours and travel itineraries, will be individualised according
to the player's objectives and target ranking.
As a new initiative the NTS Tour Group was developed to
cater for players born on or before 1995. This programme
focuses specifically on optimising individual performances
with regard to the ITF Circuits, Challengers, and Tour events,
as well as aiming towards representation of Hong Kong in
major games and competitions.

Feeder Squad
The Feeder Squad (Pre-NTS), with the support from the
Leisure and Cultural Services Department, has grown from
strength to strength. 32 young budding talents from various
training programmes and competitions were identified and
invited to join this focus developmental programme in
September 2010. Individualised programmes that couple
with overseas tournament opportunities is the core of the
training. Our vision is that among these Feeder Squad
players are the future Hong Kong Team players.
ITF tournaments and tours
In 2010 NTS players of various level all had a good schedule
of tournament play both locally and overseas, spanning
countries from close to home, such as Malaysia and China,
to Australia and Qatar. In addition to the good wins in the
ITF tournament in Qatar, the JNTS and NTS dominated the
Asian 14/U Series in Malaysia held in July while others were
contesting ITF World Junior Circuit events in the Asia/Oceania
region. Details of the notable results achieved in 2010 are
listed in the latter part of the report.
Talent Group and Talent ID Programme
The playing standard of the Talent Group and the Talent ID
has continued to improve and more results have been
produced. Additional elements of modernised tennis and
fitness have been integrated into the training allowing the
players to train for 4-8 hours per week in a special designed
programme.

Talent Group is now in its 9th year and over 120 TG and
Talent ID players are training at the Hong Kong Tennis Centre,
Shek Kip Mei Park Tennis Courts, Kings Park and the HKTA
Tennis Centre. As well as tournament results, communication
and team work are the core values of the TG and TID
programme. We actively communicate with parents verbally,
electronically and via meetings. The TG web pages have
been updated regularly to provide the latest information to
parents and players. The social aspect of tennis has been
enhanced to include both tennis and events of a non-tennis
nature in the TG calendar to promote friendship amongst
the players, these included the TG Movie Night, a Bowling
Competition, the X'mas Challenge and a Pizza Party as well
as other functions, where parents were also welcomed to
join in on several occasions.
In 2011 the Committee will continue to strive for excellence
in all programmes both on and off court and we optimistically
anticipate even further progress will be made.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the HKTA
Council for supporting our activities during the past year,
the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation for their financial support,
the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services
Department for funding and also for providing us with
excellent training facilities, the SF&OC and the HKSI for

HKTA National Coaching Team and the parents for their
confidence and trust in us, and last but not least the players

Year in Review
The HKTA Tennis League is traditionally one of the most
popular and arguably the longest running team event in the
city. This league has continued uninterrupted for 100 years
except for five years during WWII. Many of the same clubs
that played back in the early 1900s still compete today and
the league has grown both in size and in prestige. Each year
during the various league seasons over 3,000 persons old
and young now actively participate.
In 2010, 41 affiliated clubs and league clubs, 173 teams and
more than 3,000 players took part in the various divisions.
That is a 10% increase when compared with last year. Two
major leagues are held each year, namely the Summer and
Winter Leagues, in addition to these a Mixed Doubles League,
a Veterans League (run jointly with the Hong Kong Veterans
Tennis Association) a Two Court League (run together with
the Federation of Community Sports Clubs (FCTC) and a
Junior League also take place during the year.
The HKTA is constantly searching for opportunities that will
allow more clubs and players to participate in league tennis.
One of these initiatives was the Winter Two Court League.
This league is becoming more popular each year with an
increase of 25 teams over 2009. The League is jointly
organised by the HKTA and the FCTC and is aimed at providing
league tennis to all community tennis clubs and residential
tennis clubs in Hong Kong. We especially target those clubs
and complexes that have only two available courts and are
therefore not eligible to compete in the HKTA Leagues. In
2010, 115 teams from 36 FCTC member clubs and 6 HKTA
member clubs and residential tennis clubs participated. This
has been a very successful initiative and we will continue
to search for ways of introducing other new and exciting
ideas with the hope that we will attract more players to
League Tennis.

HKTA Tennis Convenors' Tournament 2010
The tenth HKTA Tennis Convenors' Tournament took place
on November 28 during the morning of finals day at the
CRC Open 2010. This tournament is traditionally jointly
hosted by the League Management Committee (LMC) and
the Chinese Recreation Club. It is always a well anticipated
and enjoyable event and 2010 proved no exception. The
trophy that all the players compete for is the Convenors'
Cup. This is a perpetual trophy that was donated in 1999
by HKTA President, Mr. Kenneth Tsui, in memory of his late
father and uncle - Tsui Wai Pui and Tsui Yun Pui - the
Terms of Reference
(i) The LMC shall be responsible for the promotion,
management, and marketing of all League tennis, which
is organised or sanctioned by the Hong Kong Tennis
Association
(ii) The LMC shall be appointed annually by the HKTA
Council and shall consist of a Chairman, a League
Secretary and not less than eight additional members
from Affiliated Clubs

(iii) The LMC shall be responsible for the registration of
teams, the grading of individual players, and the
publication of a League Handbook containing the Rules
for League Competitions and the arrangement of League
Divisions
gentlemen that are affectionately referred to as "The Tsui
Brothers" by their peers. The exploits on the courts of these
two remarkable tennis players from Hong Kong will always
be remembered in the archives of Hong Kong tennis history.
(iv) The LMC shall have the authority to arbitrate on disputes
between clubs and players concerning League matters
(v) The LMC shall consult Convenors of Affiliated Clubs on
at least one occasion each year at a Convenors meeting
to consider modifications pertaining to the organisation
of Leagues or to the Rules for League Competitions

The Membership Services Committee (MSC) has been working
on strengthening the relationship between the tennis
enthusiasts and the HKTA since its establishment in 2000.
Each year we solicit special offers for the members and we
keep them posted on the local tennis news through the
HKTA website, emails and sms. We also organise the annual
Dr. Henry Fok Corporate Patron League to maintain the
status of tennis in the business community.
The Committee solicit members' benefits from a number
of merchants and inform the members through regular
emails and the HKTA website. Our members can enjoy
special discounts for the purchase of tennis gear, travel
packages, tickets to the Hong Kong Tennis Classic and the
Venetian Macao Tennis Showdown as well as other exciting
offers.

We ensure effective communications with the members
through regular emails, quarterly newsletters and the 24x7
HKTA website. The bilingual HKTA newsletter is well-designed
and covers all major activities of the Association. It continues
to be a useful advertising tool for our commercial sponsors.

All of our website content, except the front page news article,
is now available in both English and Chinese. This helps to
reach out to everyone in Hong kong and popularise the
sport. The Committee realise that a good website can only
be maintained by continuous improvement in response to
user feedbacks. We therefore conducted a survey in August;
the many suggestions and comments we received from the
members will help point the way for our enhancement work.

This annual team event remains as one of the most important
events on the HKTA calendar and is eagerly anticipated by
the participating organisations.

Year in Review
It was another busy year for the HKTA officials. They
worked in over 50 events in Hong Kong and Macau during
2010. The events included the HK Tennis Classic, the
Venetian Macao Tennis Showdown 2010, the Davis Cup,
the two ITF international junior tournaments, the three
major local tournaments - the Hong Kong National Tennis
Championships, the SCAA Open and the CRC Open and numerous corporate, district, junior tournaments,
competitions and leagues.
Internationally our silver, bronze and white badge officials
worked in ITF, WTA and ATP events, including Wimbledon
qualifying, CHINA GDD-Guangzhou International Women's
Open and the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000. We continue to
focus on improving the standard of officiating at all levels
and encouraging more officials to attend ITF workshops to
upgrade their officiating levels by working at international
events.
The Committee organised seminars, lectures, refresher courses
and training sessions throughout the year at all levels to
ensure our officials maintained a high and sharp level of
competence
47 candidates successfully completed the Level 1 Umpires'
Training Course that was held at Victoria Park in September.

Year in Review
Competition is one of the key elements in the sport of tennis
and the Tournament Committee is committed to provide
tournaments at all levels and for all ages. Tennis is a sport
that is played for life and the competitive element of
tournaments is one way of keeping players in the game.
Tournaments can be arranged for any age group; for juniors
as young as 6 years of age to senior players 80 years and
over, both locally and internationally.
Our aims are to organise even more tournaments for players
of all levels and ages. Another of the Committee's duties is
to select the teams from the eligible and available players
to represent Hong Kong in major games and competitions,
tournament results and rankings are one of the means of
selection. To ensure that the younger players can gain match
experience at an early age many competitions have been
organised that target the younger players, By promoting
the Novice Competitions for beginners and the Junior Series
for the more experienced players, we have successfully
increased the numbers playing in both series. This year the
tournament section has been very busy, with a 32% increase
in entries for the National Junior Championships, a 15%
increase in the Junior Series, with an average of 500 entries

for each competition and in the Novice Competitions there
was an increase of 10% with up to 270 entries in each event,
the youngest player being 5 years old. The committee also
organised four mini tennis competitions for children aged
9 and under, this competition is intended to give them a
starting point in their tennis competitive careers.
Community Tennis
The community tennis events are a very important and
popular part of the tournament scene and each year we
organise various tennis events in the districts to allow players
of all standards to compete. In 2010 thousands of local
players have participated in the Federation of Community
Tennis Clubs League and the Hong Kong Districts Tennis
Circuit.
Two ITF Group 4 Junior Circuit Tournaments
For over twenty years the HKTA has run International Tennis
Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit Tournaments in Hong Kong.
This year the Committee organised two Group 4 events one
in January and one in October, juniors from 14 countries
travelled to Hong Kong to participate in these popular world
ranking events. These events are a unique opportunity for
our top 18 and under local players to experience playing
against some of the best juniors in the world with the
advantage of playing in a home environment. For many of
the local players it is their first taste of international play
and it gives them a valuable insight into the high standards
of the juniors around the world. It also helps them to gain
their first ITF Junior World ranking, or improve their current
rankings. At the end of November 2010 Hong Kong has 11
boys and 10 girls with a world junior ranking.
Lions Hong Kong National Junior Tennis
Championships 2010
The Hong Kong National Junior Tennis Championships
sponsored by Lions Clubs International District 303 Hong
Kong & Macau is the most popular local junior tournament
in Hong Kong. In 2010 it was held from 1st to 28th March
at Victoria Park. The juniors competed in 14 events: Boys'
and Girls' Singles 10U, 12U, 14U, 18U and Boys' and Girls'
Doubles in 12U, 14U, 18U and this year there was a record
entry of 680.
Rankings
Results from the National Championships, the SCAA Open,
the CRC Open, and the Hong Kong Districts Tennis Circuit,
as well as conversion points from ITF Junior ranking
tournaments, WTA, ATP and ITF Futures events are used for
the HKTA National Rankings. All participants in these
tournaments will have a Numeric Ranking starting from
number one.
The Junior National Ranking system shows Singles rankings
for Boys and Girls 10&U, 12&U, 14&U, 18&U as well as
Boys' and Girls' Doubles rankings 12&U, 14&U, 18&U. One
of the aims of the Tournament Committee is to encourage
junior players to gain more experience in doubles play as
one of the deciding factors in international team events is
often the doubles match.
International Exposure
HK National Tennis Championships
The Hong Kong National Tennis Championships is one of
the three major tennis tournaments that are held annually
in Hong Kong and most of the top players in Hong Kong
compete in these three events. Because of the unavailability
of Victoria Park due to the East Asian Games, the 2009 event
was held from 17th January until the 28th February 2010.
Nine events were played: Men's and Ladies' Singles and
Doubles, Men's and Ladies' B Singles and Doubles and Mixed
Doubles. This year the tournament will be held at Victoria
Park and the Hong Kong Tennis Centre starting on December
11th.
Teams from Hong Kong compete each year in ITF Team
Competitions and it is the duty of the Committee to ensure
that there is a fair selection procedure for these events. This
year players, captains and managers have been selected for:
the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, the Federation Cup, and the
Asian Games.
Many of our elite juniors travelled overseas during the year
to compete in ITF international junior team competitions
- the Asia/Oceania qualifying for the under-14s World Junior
Tennis Competition for both boys and girls, the Junior Davis
Cup (boys), the Junior Fed Cup (girls) for under-16 juniors
and the ITF 14 & under Championships.
