FESTIVAL - Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce
I s sue 647 - M Ay 2007
The Official Newsletter of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce
Summer starts here at the Sun Fun Festival®
from May 31 to June 4, and what a great time
to celebrate tourism and all that it brings to the
Myrtle Beach area. It’s a well known fact that as one
of the nation’s most popular vacation destinations,
the Grand Strand is the economic engine of South
Carolina. The 13.8 million visitors who travel here
each year inject nearly $4 billion into our local
economy.
Not only during the first week of June but
throughout our Sun Fun Festival–A Celebration
of Summer, we’ll be recognizing the importance
of tourism in our community. Our summer long
festivity, which starts in June and wraps up with the
Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival on Aug. 31Sept. 1, is the perfect time to extend a warm
welcome to our visitors.
During our Celebration of Summer, the Myrtle
Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and
our partners, the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality
Association and Hospitality Association of South
Carolina, will once again extend a big “Thank
You for Visiting” to those choosing the Grand
Strand as their vacation destination. MBACC will
feature advertisement in local newspapers, and
on television and radio during the first week of

Blue skies. Green grass. Warm weather. It all adds up
to the Sun Fun Festival®–A Celebration of Summer.
With the Sun Fun Festival approaching its 56th
anniversary, it’s time to pull out all the stops and
really show off the Grand Strand. Go outside and
have some fun!
Sun Fun is no longer just a one time event in June.
It has evolved into a summer long celebration from
June through September. The celebration of summer
kicks off with the Sun Fun Festival from May 31
to June 4. Here is just a peek at what the Sun Fun
Festival–A Celebration of Summer has in store for
the upcoming months.
Sandcastle rises again
Yes Virginia Beach, the Guinness Book of World

to the World’s Tallest Sandcastle. The headliner of

the Myrtle Beach area looks to reclaim the world’s
tallest sandcastle record with a 40-foot tall castle.
Starting May 24, professional sand sculptors will
create a 40-foot tall sand sculpture with a 75-foot
wide base. This enormously popular and competitive
event is sponsored by the Best Western Hotels of the
Carolinas.
June 1 is pageant day as contestants vie for the
titles of Sun Fun Miss Legs, Little Miss and Mister
Hawaiian Tropic, Miss Sun Fun and Miss Sun
As always, the Sun
Fun Festival stretches

Ambassadors are a group of dedicated
volunteers from various businesses throughout
the Grand Strand community. Their mission is
to welcome and nurture current members and
recruit new chamber members. Ambassadors
serve as goodwill representatives at various
chamber functions and aid in the support of
members.
Ambassadors earn points by calling and visiting
other chamber members, attending monthly
meetings, recruiting other Ambassadors,
having a suggested business become a chamber
member, and participating in chamber
projects. At the end of each month, these
points are tallied and an Ambassador of the
Month is named.
Why become a chamber Ambassador?
Ambassadors gain business exposure
by being the first to meet chamber
members and put their company’s
name in the forefront. By volunteering
at chamber events and attending the
monthly Ambassador meetings, your
business is kept current on what is going on
within the chamber and community.

valuable benefit in today’s competitive market
place.

Gala Raises Funds for
Myrtle Beach Tourism
The Myrtle Beach Marketing Cooperative is about to see a few more dollars added to its bank role thanks to
Calvin Gilmore and the cast of The Carolina Opry. The $100 per person, black-tie gala will be presented June
23 at The Carolina Opry Theater with proceeds going toward tourism advertisement. The co-op will not only
receive the funds from the gala, but will also receive the matching funds from the state of South Carolina as a
result of the gala performance.
The evening will include refreshments and heavy hors d’oeuvres. A prize and award will be presented to the
individual and the business that sells the most gala tickets. Call (843) 913-2222 to buy tickets.
The Myrtle Beach Marketing Cooperative is a collaborative marketing effort formed by local businesses to
bolster tourism advertising for the Grand Strand. To learn more about the co-op, call Kate Miles at

Free, value-added benefit of membership
Begin a lifetime relationship with the chamber. That’s the idea behind new member orientation. These
monthly sessions provide new members and new employees of existing members (or for that matter,
anyone looking for a benefits and services update) with the opportunity to learn how to maximize your
chamber membership to ensure the return on investment that you expect.
It’s a great way to break the ice and meet other chamber members. Plus you have the chance to learn
first-hand the benefits of chamber membership. Participation is the key in making your membership
work for you.
The Sun Fun Festival®-A Celebration of
Summer is a time to recognize the value of
travel and spread the word about tourism.
Last year, millions of visitors enjoyed the
wonderful sights and sounds of the area
and spent nearly $4 billion to boost the
Grand Strand’s economy.
In the Myrtle Beach area, everyone benefits
from tourism. When visitors spend money,
they support our region’s infrastructure,

children to school and sustain our quality
of life.
advertising in our core markets but are
reaching out to new ones, largely through
an aggressive television advertising schedule
that has run for 20 weeks in nearly 75 key
markets. Last month, the Myrtle Beach
business community introduced the Grand
Strand to more than 50 travel editors and
members of the New York City media. (See
PR Rollout on Page 17 for the complete
story.) And we continue to use the power
of the Internet to reach more potential
visitors, averaging nearly 15,000 daily user
sessions on our Web sites this year.
The Coastal Carolina Association of
Realtors has already donated $10,000 and
Calvin Gilmore and The Carolina Opry
are planning a black-tie gala (See Page 4 for
tickets). As other industries get involved,
we hope to continue seeing the Grand
Strand marketing budget grow.
One last thought: While advertising is
crucial to feeding the local economy, a
healthy dose of our Southern hospitality
can go a long way too. As millions of
visitors descend upon the Grand Strand

VisitMyBeach.com has a brand new look that is more visually appealing
and easier to navigate. While still a work in progress, several new features
have already been added, including a new quick search for lodging. The
revamped lodging search tool makes it easier and faster to find the perfect
accommodation. Visitors can do a quick search by type of property (bed &
breakfast, timeshare, campground, etc.), proximity to the beach (oceanfront,
within two blocks of the beach, etc.), or a particular region (Litchfield,
Surfside, Little River, etc.) The search engine brings up photographs and
a brief description of the property. Let’s say you do a quick search for
oceanfront accommodations. VisitMyBeach.com will show you all the
oceanfront properties with photographs and a brief description of each
property. It also lets you know if the property has online booking at their
Web site.

The Ups and Downs of the
2007-2008 State Budget
by Nicole Aiello, MBACC public information officer
It’s been a fight for the Myrtle Beach area this year during
the state budget process. Budget prospects at the beginning
of the year looked bright, but there are some gray clouds
looming in the distance that may bring budget woes to our
area.
Let’s start with the good news . . .
• The 2:1 matching grant money for destination-specific
advertising has been increased to $10 million.
• The budget currently includes new money in the amount of
$10 million for statewide advertising.
And now for the not-so-good news . . .
• Beach renourishment funding has been cut from $5 million
to $500,000 by the Senate Finance Committee.
• Beach outfall project funding dropped from $5 million to
$100,000 in the Senate Finance Committee.
• The House had called for $6.3 million in recurring funds
for Coastal Carolina University but that money has been
hacked down to $400,000 in the Senate. That’s $2 million
less than last year. Interestingly, Francis Marion University
and S.C. State University may receive $250,000 for an I-73
economic impact study when our own CCU has the only
certified economist in the NESA area. the budget has now
been diluted to $500,000. Charleston, on the other hand, is
holding steady with $200 million for a port road and there’s
$25 million each for I-95 corridor infrastructure and other
state highway maintenance.
In other legislative news, the bill that was introduced about
a month ago asking for the legislature to allow local boards
of education to set their own schedules, in lieu of adhering
to the new late school start bill, has been shelved. Looks like
South Carolina schools–all of them–will have to begin no
later than the third Monday in August. We’re glad to see that
the work of the parents’ coalition, Save SC Summers, did not
unravel.

announcements are included in the Grand Strander,

Writing Effective Job Descriptions
A job description describes the major areas of an employee’s job or position. A good
job description begins with a careful analysis of the important facts about a job, such
as the individual tasks involved, the methods used to complete the tasks, the purpose
and responsibilities of the job, the relationship of the job to other jobs, and the
qualifications needed for the job.
It’s important to make a job description practical by keeping it dynamic, functional
and current. A well-written, practical job description will help you avoid hearing a
refusal to carry out a relevant assignment because “it isn’t in my job description.”
Realistically speaking, many jobs are subject to change due either to personal growth,
organizational development, and/or the evolution of new technologies. Flexible job
descriptions will encourage your employees to grow within their positions and learn
how to make larger contributions to your company. For example: Is your office
manager stuck “routinely ordering office supplies for the company and keeping the
storage closet well stocked “ or is she/he “developing and implementing a system
of ordering office supplies that promotes cost savings and efficiency within the
organization?”
Keep each statement in the job description crisp and clear:
• Structure your sentences in classic verb/object and explanatory phrases. For example,
a sentence pertaining to the description of a receptionist position might read:
“Greets office visitors and personnel in a friendly and sincere manner.”
• Always use the present tense of verbs.
• If necessary, use explanatory phrases telling why, how, where or how often to add
meaning and clarity. For example: “Collects all employee time sheets on a bi-weekly
basis for payroll purposes.”
• Omit any unnecessary articles such as “a,” “an,” “the” or other words for an easy to
understand point description. Using the above example, the statement could have read,
“Greets all visitors and the office personnel to the building in a friendly and a sincere
manner.”
j
• Use unbiased terminology. For example: use the he/she approach or construct
sentences in such a way that gender pronouns are not required.
• Avoid using words which are subject to differing interpretations. Try not to use words
such as “frequently,” “some,” “complex,” “occasional,” and “several.”
When writing a job description, keep in mind that the job description will serve as a
major basis for outlining job training or conducting future job evaluations.
A job description should include a:
• Job Title
• Job Objective or Overall Purpose Statement–This statement is generally a summary
designed to orient the reader to the general nature, level, purpose, and objective of the
job. The summary should describe the broad function and scope of the position and be
no longer than three to four sentences.
• List of Duties or Tasks Performed–The list contains an item by item list of principal
duties, continuing responsibilities and accountability of the position.
• Description of the relationships and roles the occupant of the position holds within
the company, including any supervisory positions, subordinating roles and/or other
working relationships.
When using job descriptions for recruiting situations, you may also want to attach the
following: • Job Specifications, Standards and Requirements–The minimum amount of
qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of the job, such as education,
experience, knowledge and skills. Any critical skills and expertise needed for the job
should be included. For example, for a receptionist, critical skills may be having
1) a professional and courteous telephone manner, 2) legible handwriting if messages
are to be taken, 3) the ability to handle a multiple-lined phone system for a number of
staff members, and 4) the patience and endurance to sit behind a desk all day.
• Job Location–Where the work will be performed.
• Equipment to be used in the performance of the job.
• Collective Bargaining Agreements–Agreements and terms that relate to job functions,
if applicable, such as when your company’s employees are members of a union.
• Nonessential Functions–Functions which are not essential to the position or any
marginal tasks performed by the incumbent of the position.
• Salary Range–Range of pay for the position.

There are three primary functions performed by the
chamber:
1. Promote business: The chamber serves as the primary
destination marketing organization and promotes the
tourism industry out-of-market. The chamber also
provides numerous opportunities for local businesses
to promote themselves to visitors, residents and other
businesses.
2. Protect business: The chamber seeks to influence
legislation and regulation by local, state and federal
governments in a proactive manner, supporting
legislation that benefits businesses and the communities
they reside in and, where necessary, opposing legislation
that unnecessarily inhibits businesses.
3. Improve business: The chamber offers a multitude
of programs and services that assist businesses and/or
individuals.

NYC Press Launch: “The Grand Strand Meets the Big Apple”
On March 27, over 50 travel editors from top-notch
national travel and lifestyle publications such as
Parenting, Family Circle, Budget Travel, Woman’s
Day, Travel + Leisure Golf, Golf Digest, Travel Agent,
and Hotel Business took a walk along the Grand
Strand. However, the media did not leave New York
City–the Grand Strand was brought to them. With
the help of M Booth & Associates and representatives
from the Myrtle Beach area, the 26+ Helen Mills
Theater in New York City was turned into the warm
welcoming and beautiful Grand Strand. Attendees
were surrounded by Myrtle Beach area photography,
art, music, flowers and hammocks along with two
performances from All That!, the Carolina Opry’s
famous dance troupe. The media in attendance
mingled with Myrtle Beach representatives to learn
about all of the exciting offerings that our 60 miles
of beach™ provides to visitors.
Inquirer to promote the Myrtle Beach destination for
all demographics.
In conjunction with the NYC press launch,
Eric Wagner, a Myrtle Beach area chef, cooked up
Lowcountry cuisine for a radio interview with Food
Talk with Micheal Colameco and a broadcast segment
with News 12 in Connecticut on their “What’s
Cooking” show. Along with cooking some of the
Grand Strand’s famous shrimp and grits, Wagner spoke
about the destination and
the different restaurant
and food options that
are offered in the Myrtle
Beach area.
I would like to thank
everyone that helped make
the events such a success
for the Myrtle Beach
destination. It took a lot of
hard work and cooperation
of everyone involved and
we would not have been
able to make these events
a success without your
help. So a very big gracious
“thank you” goes out to all!
We had an overwhelming positive response from the
travel media in attendance. Many inquiries have been
made for additional information on the area and
possible visits and stories that will result from this
event. We have already started to see results that will
continue over the next few months and years.
In the days following the NYC press launch, media
tours were conducted in New Jersey and Philadelphia.
We had desk side visits with travel editors of
publications such as USA Today, Travel Weekly,
Meetings & Conventions Magazine and Philadelphia
Photographs of the beach and area amusements hang from the walls of the
famous 26+ Helen Mills Theater in New York City as the Myrtle Beach business
community introduces the Grand Strand to the NYC media.

There is general recognition that technologybased businesses tend to “cluster” with similar
type businesses in geographic regions. In fact,
technology professionals as individuals also seem
to want to interact directly with other similarly
trained persons to gain additional knowledge,
ideas and develop potential enhancing
partnerships.

Looking to fine tune your networking skills? Make plans to
attend a “speed networking” event. Similar to speed dating,
Connections Marketplace provides an easy way to get a taste of
networking in a structured environment. Networkers meet each
person for one minute, which is just enough time to exchange
basic information and contact data. By the end of the morning,
attendees leave with contacts from a wide range of professions.
At Connections Marketplace, you’ll be seated at tables of eight.
Participants are each given one minute to introduce themselves
and their company to other members at the table. After
everyone has had a turn, you have two minutes for networking.
You then move to the next table and begin again.
Bring a minimum of 50 business cards to exchange and display
on the share table (a table for your business cards, brochures,
product samples, etc.)

North State Storage provides customers self-storage solutions that are convenient, clean and safe. The facility’s on-site
managers are committed to providing professional, friendly service and advice.
North State Storage, located at 4630 Dick Pond Road, offers
o
Interior 1st and 2nd Floor Units
o
Standard Drive-Up Access
o
Boat, Camper, RV Storage
The storage center also provides high tech state of the art security, fenced/controlled access gate and perimeter lighting.
Jenny Chestnut, facility manager at North State Storage, shares her insight into the company and the storage industry.
Tell us a little bit about yourself–work history, how long you have lived in the area, how long have you worked for
North State Storage? I am a native–born and raised in Aynor. I have two children, Beth, 8, and Aidan, 3, and my husband
Adam. I have worked for North State for three years. Just recently, I took over from my mother Sara, who ran the property for
four years. She did such a wonderful job; I’m just trying to keep that same good mentality that she had going on.
What is your role as facility manager? Making sure everyone is happy, even through that does not always happen, we do
try. I move tenants in and out, do marketing, and anything to make sure everything is running good.
Tell us about North State Storage. Number of employees? Years in operation? We have three employees: myself, Denise
Graham, who is my assistant manager, and Toby Lunsford, general maintenance. We have been in operation for over eight
years in this location. North State also has a facility in Rock Hill, S.C., and eight locations in North Carolina. We are in the
process of expanding more now.
What makes North State Storage different from the other storage facilities in the area? Why should someone choose
your facility? We try to make it a personal experience. We want the customer to feel secure about leaving their things with us.
Just as if they were leaving it with friends. We have 24 hours access. We provide carts for the customers to use so they are

not carrying one box at a time to the unit. We also have a
freight elevator for the second floor, so it is an easy fit for
a couch or anything large. With all of this you still get that
Southern hospitality.
What’s a typical day like? The phone ringing, customers
making payments, questions about the facility. We try to
accommodate all of our customers when and if we can.
What has the chamber done for you? Introduced me to a lot
of new business contacts.
Anything else you would like to add … Come in and see me
if you need storage. We have great summer specials now. Half
off first full month of rent and lots more. We also have a $50
referral incentive. If you refer someone to us, we will send you a
check for $50. Easy cash!
What do you enjoy most about your job? Meeting all the
new people. It’s funny when they ask how long you have been
here and you tell them born and raised. They say no wonder
you never left, the beach is wonderful. The sit and talk forever
about where they came from and why they are moving. We
talk about the growth and how much the area has changed
over the years. It’s also nice to hear about other parts of the
world.
What makes it challenging? Getting the sale! I want to try
and meet each and every customer’s individual needs. They
need to feel that this is the best deal and place for them.
How’s the storage industry in the Myrtle Beach area?
Great!! The business is here and coming. You just have to get
it when it walks in the door.
Since we drew your card from those who attended
chamber events, you must have attended at least one
chamber activity. What benefits/services have you taken
advantage of? None so far, besides the expo. I plan on
looking at them though.
Has your membership been worthwhile? Yes, it helps get
your name in the area.
