EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Sarah Brown, Golf Shop Manager
What does an Arts Management, soccer & lacrosse player that has spent
a majority of her career opening restaurant concepts in VA & MD have to
do with golf? More than you think! This eclectic mix of jobs plus 12 years
of retail experience has ended up being the perfect recipe for a stellar
Golf Shop Manager at CCL. Sarah Brown started her position of shop
manager in February 2011. “I wanted to find a way to customize the
CCL member shopping experience, down to their favorite colors, specific
sizes and brands. I think it’s important to try and create a personalized
shopping experience to keep loyalty with the golf shops and ultimately
find the members exactly what they want.“ Sarah's other tasks include
special orders, keeping the shops in exceptional shape, along with
assisting Sara Bush. Sarah Brown has plenty upcoming plans for the
CCL membership; so stay tuned!

GREEN’S CORNER by Jeff Mack
The spring and early summer season brings both soil and air temperatures that the CCL Bentgrass greens
absolutely adore. Research consistently concludes that Bent achieves its most significant root growth during this
time of year. We will assist the Bent in becoming as healthy as possible by continued execution of properly timed
applications and grooming practices. These processes, coupled with healthy turf, will yield silky smooth putting
surfaces that the CCL membership both deserves and expects.
Pending CCL Board approval, a fan will be placed to the back left of #9 Dye green and be fully operational
by the end of May. The prevailing winds of summer are restricted at this particular site, and the turf on the rear
quadrant of this green consistently exhibits symptoms of stress. Adding this fan and increasing air circulation
should dramatically improve turf quality during the summer months.
Many, if not all, have probably noted how the irrigation heads immediately surrounding the CCL greens are
grouped in pairs. One head in the pair is dedicated to solely watering the putting surface in that respective area,
while the other is responsible for irrigating the perimeter outside of the green in that respective area. The irrigation requirements for the Bent differs from the closely adjacent Bermuda. Having this type of specified control is
critical in practicing sound water management practices. Frequent inspections and corrections, where necessary,
take place throughout the year to ascertain that all heads are adjusted properly and working as intended.
As a reminder to the CCL membership, in coordination with NCSU, we will be evaluating the herbicide,
Amicarbazone, on select Pines greens during the month of April. This material appears promising in terms of
safely and effectively removing Poa Annua from Bent maintained at green’s height.
Rick Johnson and his staff will soon be transitioning/planting the CCL landscape beds to summer annuals.
The work will begin later this month and conclude in early to mid-May. We look forward to introducing
beautiful color and designs to the CCL courses and grounds for all to enjoy.
Harassment of resident geese on the CCL courses by use of a dedicated handler and trained canine(s) is currently in full swing. Excellent results were noted by the utilization of this same service in 2010 and we expect the
same in 2011. This time of year, constant pressure via harassment is critical, in that it will hopefully irritate the
geese and force them to go elsewhere. If and when they do settle down and nest, they will remain until later in
the summer once the young are able to fly.
Weed pressure is typically at its peak during the spring of the year. Well-timed, cost efficient herbicide
applications will be executed as needed. Please keep in mind that some selective herbicides take a few weeks to
work and symptoms of injury to the target plants are not always immediate. Also, the “blue” color visible on the
courses following an application is an indicator dye added to the tank, so our applicators are aware of what has
and has not been sprayed. The indicator dye usually disappears within a week’s time.
Assuming temperatures continue to rise, the Bermuda on the CCL courses will continue to emerge from dormancy. Temporarily, mowing heights will be lowered to aid in “cleaning-up” the courses. Remember, the dormant leaves on the Bermuda turf stand are basically dead tissue. All regeneration of growth following dormancy is initiated from the stolons and rhizomes at and/or below ground level. Removal of a portion of the dormant
leaves, via mowing at a lower height, will encourage quicker green-up by increasing sun exposure down into the
canopy. As always, if you should have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course,
or make an appointment to see me in my office.
Spring is time for Junior Golf
This month’s focus for Junior Golf is chipping. This is an important skill for every golfer, but especially beginners and juniors. April opens up with chipping practice clinics to get our juniors ready for this month’s
Skills Challenge. Juniors attending these clinics will take a series of skills tests in order to find areas of the
game that need improvement. Members of the CCL Junior Golf Academy will have their progress tracked
throughout the year with the goal of improving everyone’s game in a fun environment. It’s not too late to
sign up for the CCL Junior Golf Academy! Call or e-mail Justin at [email protected]
for more information for Junior Golf.

MGA
Mark Schwartz opened the 2011 MGA Season at breakfast in the Landfall Clubhouse on March 9 and
introduced the 2011 Board. Henry Brown, a previous MGA president, gave a short invocation. Mark presented the immediate past president, Fran Drury, with the Past President’s award and thanked all the past
presidents for their work in making the MGA a success. This year, the MGA started the season with 224
members, 103 of those attended the breakfast. Thanks was given to Nick Duffy, the pro staff representative,
for his hard work in keeping the MGA working smoothly on game days. There was mention that the Board
had conducted a survey of the membership this year.
Mark then introduced a series of speakers. First, Bill Chepla explained the new games the MGA will be
playing this year. The 9 Hole game and the Ironman Challenge were also introduced. Bill explained the
nuts and bolts of how the MGA Challenge will be conducted and how prizes will be awarded.
Next, Jeff Mack, our Golf Course Superintendent, made an excellent, in-depth presentation of the status of
our courses that make CCL’s golf courses premier courses to play. Jeff also mentioned the Campaign For
Excellence being undertaken by the Club and how members can assist with the Campaign by keeping our
courses in good shape by fixing divots, following the 90 degree cart path rule and repairing divots.
Greg Guman, our Director of Instruction, discussed various golf development programs and how much
he enjoyed working with the membership to improve their game. Tim Meeker from the Tournament Committee provided an update on the 2011 Tournament Schedule. He also stated that the committee is making
an effort to make the tournaments consistent to time of year, format and awards are concerned. Chuck
Qualey discussed and provided pictures of the awards as well as discussed the vendors. The meeting
concluded by noting the 2011 MGA Handbooks were available and that the first golf game of the year
would start at 9 a.m. Opening Day was overcast and cool with 116 members participating.

TIP OF THE MONTH by Greg Guman
Putting the Ultra Fast Downhiller
When your ball is above the hole, try rolling the ball off the
toe of the putter. This technique will deaden the putt and
make it much easier to control the speed on an ultra fast
downhiller. Give it a try; it’s an amazing little trick.
Good luck and have fun!
PLAYERS OF THE MONTH

Sara Crowder, Sandra Randazzo,
Lynne Holloway and Lou Woltz
for incredible execution and improvement
during a short game clinic. Great job ladies.
You are all on your way to lowering your scores!

LGA
After a few warm-up rounds in March, the LGA tournament season will start on April 14 and 15 with the
LGA Alice Dye Tournament. The field will be flighted in groups of eight. The format is four nine hole matches
in your flight. Each nine hole match is worth ten points. The player with the highest points of the entire field
will be the Alice Dye Champion. In case of inclement weather, the rain date is April 21.
On May 5 and 6, we have the Member/Member Tournament with a pre-tournament cocktail party, where
the teams can place bets on themselves or on other teams in their flights. Sign up with a partner at the Dye
Pro Shop or ask the Pro staff for help in finding a partner. This is also a flighted event and participants will
compete against similar handicaps. The format is partners’ better ball. The partners must play to a handicap
differential of no more than ten strokes. We look forward to your participation on play days and tournaments!

L9GA
The L9GA kicked off the 2011 season with an Opening Coffee on Tuesday, March 3. With 50 of our 100
members attending, it was a chance to welcome new and returning members, as well as chat with the CCL
golf professionals while enjoying a delicious lite breakfast buffet. Attending members received their 2011
Membership Handbooks organized by Membership Chair, Michele Schwieters.
Along with spring comes rain. And rain it did, enough to cancel the L9GA’s Opening Day on Thursday,
March 10. The rain did not dampen spirits as we convened to the Landfall Ballroom for the “St. Patrick’s
Day” themed luncheon. All attending members were surprised with an opening day gift: a L9GA/CCL logo
screened backpack. Kudos to Meg Doyle (Events Chair) for the beautiful table settings and wonderful menu.
As always, the service from the dining room staff was terrific.
The month of April will be a busy one for the L9GA. The “Swing into Spring” cocktail social will be held on
April 5 - hors d’oeuvres $5.95/ person, cocktails on signature. This social is open to all members and spouses/
guests. Our first Couples’ Twilight will be on Wednesday, April 20 and is limited to 28 twosomes. The Step
Aside format, cash prizes and dinner makes it a popular event.
There are several user friendly ways to sign up for L9GA play days and events: sign up in the L9GA book
(available after every play day), the CCL website or contact Todd Runkel by e-mail or call 256-9050. As a courtesy to other players and to Todd, all cancellations must be made no later than 4 p.m. the day before play.

With USTA season in high gear, tennis court availability can be hard to come by. If a group is not going to
utilize their court on a specific day, please have the courtesy to call the Pro Shop at 256-7625 and cancel this
court in advance. Also, please remember to wear proper shoes while on the clay tennis courts, to prevent
the deterioration of the courts. If your USTA rating, email, or phone number change, please email missy.

Coach Clayton and Amanda are very excited to be returning for the third year. Last year, we had lots of
kids come join the team, who not only learned different strokes but enjoyed the experience. We hope to see
everyone return this summer and welcome anybody else who wants to join in 2011!

Swim Team Requirements - By two weeks into the season the team requirement is for swimmers to be able
to swim 25 yards (1 full length) of freestyle and 12.5 yards (1/2 length) of backstroke. This is for all childrens’
safety and well-being. We want this season to be a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Kick Off Meeting - Please come to the kick-off meeting on first afternoon practice day to hear important information from Coaches Clayton and Amanda, pick up your suits and hear about volunteering needs. Stay at the
pool to order dinner from the café and drinks by signature to catch up with other swim team families.
CCL will host Swim Meet Child Care at the Sports Center from 3-8 p.m. in the Kids Room on June 15 and July 6.
Volunteering - Summer Swim Team is a volunteer driven activity. There are many opportunities to volunteer
at meets, but a few positions require a short training session. If you are able to input data in the computer, be
a stroke and turn judge or announce the meets, please note the dates the training sessions are held. The league
requires we have a certain amount of adults in the training for these positions to participate in the Wilmington
League. Contact Heather Schild at [email protected] if you are able to help us!
Training Sessions for Volunteers (each team must have 4 parents for the stroke and clinic)
Stroke and Turn clinics: May 24 and 26, YWCA at 6 p.m. - Computer clinic: May 26, YWCA at 6 p.m.
THE 12 DEADLY SINS
OF THE GOLF SWING by Michael Critchfield & Greg Guman
The “C” posture swing fault can cause a plethora of problems in your golf swing.
If you hunch over your putter and promote the “C” posture, you are overexerting your
spine. Good posture is key for a consistent swing. To see if you have a “C” posture
problem, stand sideways to a mirror and ground your golf club. Take a look and see if
your head, middle and low back are in line.
In example (1A), I am demonstrating a “C” posture. In example (1B), I am doing my
best to get my head back, shoulders back and look down so I can still see the ball. If my
head and shoulders are in line, how can I see the ball? The answer is simple: hinge from
the waist! If you practice good posture, it's easier to keep that stance and see the ball!
In example (2A + 2B), I am performing a corrective exercise to restore upper and middle
spine mobility. To perform these exercises correctly, stand about two feet away from the
wall with your knees bent and back leaning against the wall. Attempt to get your head
back as close to the wall as possible. Then from the extended position with the arms,
attempt to bring the elbows to a 45 degree bend while maintaining contact with the wall.
This is called the “Freeze” exercise and is a great way to restore the mobility and flexibility. This exercise can be challenging, so take it slow and do your best.
Feel free to contact Greg or Michael with any questions. If you have interest in a
corresponding group exercise class with a focus on these issues, please let us know.

Community
The Great Oaks Club by Maria Johnson
Gloria Kidd gave us an informative and fascinating presentation about butterflies and moths on February
9. She offered guidelines for butterfly gardening and answered our questions. We thank her for spending
time with us.
April is one of my favorite months. Our lawns are green and the trees and flowers are outstanding, as
we drive around our beautiful community. Best of all, we have our Spring Garden tour of four homes in
Landfall. It will be on Wednesday, April 13 (rain or shine). Come to the Landfall Clubhouse at 1 p.m. for our
usual refreshments and socializing, followed by a brief business meeting. Ann Jones will then give us the
names and directions to our generous neighbors, who are sharing their gardens with us.
We suggest you wear comfortable walking shoes. Two of the gardens are on Howes Creek, both are large
and special. Another is an old, established garden filled with azaleas and other elements of surprise. Our
fourth garden is on the waterway with both established landscape and newer plantings around their swimming pool. We would appreciate it if you could carpool as you leave to tour the gardens. It would help with

19th Annual Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament
The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors and Staff invite you to
participate in the 19th annual Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament! This great tournament was
founded by Landfall members Eric and Jean Rosenberg and has enjoyed 18 great years at the Country
Club of Landfall’s beautiful Dye Course.
Over the years, the Coastal Classic has raised more than $2.2 million to support New Hanover
Regional Medical Center – your community’s hospital. This year’s Tournament will continue its tradition
of fun, entertainment and of course, great golf! Your support means that NHRMC will be able to provide
the very best healthcare to our friends and families when we need it. Take pride in knowing that you and
your club help to raise money that will directly benefit our community.
Please consider participating in the 2011 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament. Call Jamie
Thompson at the Foundation (910) 815-5042 if you have questions or need additional information. Mark
your calendar for April 29-30; we look forward to seeing you at the 19th Annual Coastal Classic Celebrity
Golf Tournament!
