Programmes & Activities donates school supplies to Orang Asli children The priceless smiles on faces of the ones that give as well as the ones that receive. The sun was shining bright on the morning of 14 November 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, when eight employees of ConocoPhillips from Malaysia, United States, Canada, Norway and Australia spent the morning delivering school supplies to the students of SK Bukit Lanjan to prepare them for the new school term. The delegates were in town for an internal company workshop that week and decided to spend their last day participating in a community service initiative with MyKasih Foundation before returning to their respective home countries. Earlier in the week, the larger ConocoPhillips team huddled in their hotel to sort and pack schooling items consisting of school bags, school shoes, socks and uniforms, stationary sets, lunch boxes, water bottles, and raincoats for 124 primary school children. The items were then delivered personally by the ConocoPhillips team to students who were eagerly waiting in school. Above and below: ConocoPhillips employees busy preparing the Back-To-School kits for the students of SK Bukit Lanjan. This social responsibility volunteer activity was suggested to the workshop committee by ConocoPhillips Canada Director of Community Investment, Barbara Simic. “I was excited to bring a new dimension to this annual workshop and my team worked from Canada with MyKasih Foundation to organize the event for the attendees. MyKasih was excellent to work with,” explained Simic. “This team-building activity was an incredible experience for everyone involved and this will most definitely be considered a possible new best-practice for our workshops going forward,” said Roxanne Pettipas, ConocoPhillips’ Sustainable Development Advisor who led the volunteer project in Malaysia. 34 A publication by MyKasih Foundation “We would like to thank our counterparts in both Canada and Malaysia for their collaboration and support in setting up this connection with MyKasih Foundation on our behalf. The children and staff at the school were very appreciative of our efforts, which made this experience even more fulfilling,” said Pettipas. In addition to the Back-To-School contribution, ConocoPhillips Malaysia is also a sponsor of the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme for 220 underprivileged students from four primary schools in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and Kuching, Sarawak for year 2014 and 2015. ional Orang Sewang’ a tradit rform the ‘Tarian The students pe guests. eir international Asli dance for th Socks... check! A few months into the food aid programme, he received a golden opportunity to pursue a foundation course and an undergraduate degree course with Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK). This came via a full scholarship from the Tun Rahah Scholarship Fund offered to eligible MyKasih youths. He submitted his application and worked hard at securing his seat in the prestigious university. Currently, Ben, along with 10 other MyKasih youths are pursuing their dreams in UNIRAZAK. One year into his tertiary education, Ben beat his peers to join nine other uni-mates to represent UNIRAZAK in the Family Enterprise Case Competition (FECC) in Vermont, Canada. Students around the world participate in this annual fourday competition to win the coveted Family Enterprise undergraduate and graduate cups. The competition showcases exceptional students’ case writing, analysis and presentation skills towards solving complex family business cases. Over New Year’s Eve of 2015 Ben found himself seated on a plane soaring the high skies across the world into Burlington, Vermont, Canada. He relished the new experience from the cozy cottage with its charming fireplace, the quaint buildings, the crisp cold air to his first experience of snow and the beauty of the surrounding winter landscape. Most of all, he enjoyed the challenge of working with his fellow UNIRAZAK teammates for the intense student competition. In this issue of MyKasihNews, Ben shares a photo log of his trip to Vermont as a note of appreciation to all who have supported him on his life’s journey thus far. “Ben is a self motivated individual who saw an opportunity and was not afraid to grab it. An all rounder, he shows the quality of a true leader. We are proud to have Ben as one of our scholars in the MyKasih family,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, Chairman and Co-Founder of MyKasih Foundation. The UNIRAZAK undergraduate team won the “Team Spirit Award” – a testament to their amazing teamwork and support for each other throughout the entire competition. 36 A publication by MyKasih Foundation Ben and his fellow teammates from UNIRAZAK finally reach Burlington, Vermont, 39 hours after they left Kuala Lumpur. At Lake Champlain, Ben made his first snow turtle outside the lakeside house where they stayed for one week. During the Family Enterprise Case Competition (FECC), Ben’s team huddled over a Pressure Cooker case, aptly named as it was given to participants who were then given four hours to study, analyze, solve and interpret the case. Participants were not allowed to use any common method of information gathering (i.e. no internet, no phone, no advice from lecturers or coaches). Jakun Orang Asli boy creates school history! A Year 6 Jakun Orang Asli primary school student made school history when he scored straight A’s in the 2014 National Examinations for Primary School (UPSR). Muhammad Luqman’s academic success was the first for his school and his community since the school’s inception 57 years ago. SK Bukit Lanjan’s Headmaster, Khairul Anwar said, “We saw the potential in Luqman since he was in Year 4. He demonstrated discipline and responsibility at such a young age, we awarded him with the Best Student of 2012 and for the years after. We are planning to make him the school’s student icon, which we hope will motivate and inspire other students to stay in school and do well in their studies.” Luqman worked hard to achieve good grades especially in his weaker subjects such as English and Science. Between attending daily free tuition classes organised by the school, religious classes, homework and nightly revisions, Luqman’s days were well utilised. In his free time, Luqman enjoys reading and playing ‘Galah Panjang’, a traditional game, with his friends. He hopes to become a successful doctor one day and provide a better future for his family. Luqman with his proud teachers. Luqman is one of the 70 students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Orang Asli Bukit Lanjan in Selangor supported by Dialog Group Berhad through the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme. Under the scheme, underprivileged students are given assistance in the form of monthly bursaries to purchase food from the school canteen as well as stationery items and books from the school bookshop in a cashless manner, via their MyKasih student smartcard. Chairman and Co-Founder of MyKasih Foundation, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat said, “Congratulations to Luqman on his excellent UPSR results and on being accepted into a prestigious boarding school for his secondary education! Luqman proves that the recipe to excellence is support from parents, the school and the community. We hope Luqman’s story serves as an inspiration to other students and strengthen their belief that it is possible to achieve their aspirations with hard work and dedication.” The 12-year old is the fifth child of seven siblings whose parents are Mohd Nazri bin Ismail and Nur Hidayah binti Idris. Despite financial limitations, Nazri, a computer repairman, and his wife put in their best efforts to provide for all their children’s educational needs. Puan Hidayah’s active participation in SK Bukit Lanjan’s activities led her to be elected as the Vice President of the school’s ParentTeacher Association. In addition to his pursuit of academic excellence, Luqman proved himself to be an all-rounder as well. He is the school’s Head Prefect, President of the English Club, President of the Malaysian Youth Cadet Corporation, and President of his sports house. In the sports arena, he represents the District of Petaling Utama in the shot putt and high jump events.
