Boat School Builds on Kennebunks` Traditions
TOURIST NEWS, JULY 9–15, 2015 PAGE 11 Boat School Builds on Kennebunks' Traditions The Kennebunks have a rich history of boat and shipbuilding, with more than 20 shipbuilding firms operating there between 1766 and 1867. The shipbuilding business throughout Maine began to dwindle in the early 20th century, and in 1942, The Landing, the work area on the Kennebunk River where ships were built, hosted its last official launching of a commercial vessel. In 1978 The Landing School, created to teach students how to build and repair wooden boats, had its humble beginning. Students used a cow barn for their classroom, cut down trees on the land to mill their materials, and slept in tents on the property. Despite these challenges, the first class, nine students, constructed two dories and two 18-foot sailboats. Recognizing a void in the industry for welltrained yacht designers, the school created its Yacht Design Program in 1979. In 1999 the school added a Marine Systems Program to address industry need for marine systems technicians, and later added its Composite Boat Building Program. Over the years, the facilities were expanded. In 1987 The Landing School became the first school of its kind to be accredited by The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). In 2009, the State of Maine Department of Education and ACCSC approved the school as a degree-granting institution. Graduates of each tenmonth-long course receive a diploma, and students who complete two technical programs and 15 credit hours of general education courses are eligible to receive an Associate’s degree. Maine has an exceptionally high number of companies that specialize in the design and building of both wooden and fiberglass boats, with Hinckley Yachts in Southwest Harbor as the gold standard of boat construction. There are also countless marinas and marine supply stores to supply lobstermen, fishermen and pleasure boaters. All need trained and qualified employees, and The Landing Shops School is now capable of providing them. The Landing School is at 286 River Rd, Arundel. FMI (207) 985-7976 or www. landingschool.edu.
