ohn Lennon’s proposed idea of “no
religion” as war’s solution can be
fairly debated, but Ze’ev Maghen’s
oversimplified interpretation of Christian “universal” love (“Lennonism vs.
Judaism,” Fall 2011) misses the point.
This love, the sacred act of respecting
the holiness in all, is nothing like his
profane analogy to loving every woman
as much as one’s wife.
Jews, and Reform Jews in particular,
should have the maturity, manners, and
humility to sidestep falling into the trap
of discrediting others to prove our way
is better, which only tears the world
apart. We do not have to agree with our
Christian relatives and friends, but
“winning” here is a Faustian bargain.
