Over two centuries ago, when Napoleon invaded Egypt, Gezirah - Zamalek was an extension of the Giza agricultural flatlands. Over time, Gezirah split from the mainland, becoming three bobbing islands during flood season, eventually solidifying into its current shape. Since that time, Zamalek has been subjected to steady urban development and is today Cairo’s most desirable piece of real estate. The Fish Grotto, on what today is called Hassan Sabry street, is one of two remaining 19th century landmarks. The island developed out of a private khedieval reserve, with a palace at its center. It included beautifully lush landscaped parks and exotic birds. Today, Zamalek is a leafy green residential enclave and home to the city’s most exclusive addresses. 4 Originally named Khedive Ismail bridge, the Kasr El Nil bridge spans the river Nile, connecting Downtown to Zamalek. The Gezirah Palace before it was a hotel. 5 Zamalek’s Bygone Era While the Palace became the landmark Hotel Gezirah (today the Marriott hotel), the park turned into Gezirah-Zamalek, with its streets named after a collection of Fatimid sultans to the north, and members of the Egyptian Royal family to the south. Long regarded as the island’s high point, where Red Court once stood is today a row of choice apartment buildings. Amongst this exclusive stretch of real estate is The View, at 5 Hassan Sabry street. Red Court was built by Charles Baehler, who was instrumental in developing the island. The architecture of this house was typical of the period and to this day this type of design is visible on Hassan Sabry street. Buildings such as Gabalaya House (opposite) are reminiscent of this style. Gabalaya House stands proudly on the corner of Hassan Sabry street and 26th July street. Surrounded from all sides by agricultural land, the area was still not heavily populated when this picture was taken (c. 1920s). The tramway is visible in the forefront on 26 July street. To the north is Nile City and the meandering river, and to the west the Giza pyramids, the Aquarium Gardens and the other branch of the Nile. In the crowded metropolis that is today’s Cairo, these extraordinary views offer a sense of space, serenity and tranquillity. 121 13 The Gezirah Sporting Club When established in 1883, the Khedieval Sporting Club, was exclusively an Englishman’s club. It covered 150 acres of Zamalek, having been carved out of the Khedieval Botanical Gardens. Following the 1952 revolution, the club subsequently grew to include more than 14 50,000 (mainly Egyptian) families. Today the Gezirah Club is one of the few havens in Cairo and a lifeline for Zamalek residents, offering a green space for children, sporting activities or simply a place to socialise within an exclusive environment. The Aquarium Grotto What is today known officially as the Aquarium Grotto Garden has gone by many names since its inception. When it was first designed in the mid 1870s by the Khedive Ismail’s architect, Delchevalerie, the garden was named the Gezirah Grotto Garden (referring to the hill-like grottos that pepper the garden). This garden was intended as a public park, to be comparable to the gardens of the Gezirah palace. At the turn of the Twentieth Century, a British army captain, Stanley Flower, added aquariums to the caves, renaming the garden the Nile Aquarium. Over time, as the history of the garden receded in people’s memory, the garden simply became the Fish Garden and this is how it is known today. Few fish are still housed in the bowels of the garden’s caves but the garden is still a haven for young lovers, school children and people looking to escape the overwhelming pressures of modern day Cairo. 15 residential living redefined 16 17 ARCHITECTURE The View was designed as a contemporary structure, proudly acknowledging the art deco history of the island. The beauty of Zamalek lies in its rich heritage of art deco-inspired architecture, which can be found all along the island. From the proud, majestic buildings overlooking the Nile to the little gems tucked away on hard-to-find streets, Zamalek is a microcosm of a bygone era. Zamalek’s architectural heritage has provided inspiration for the design of The View. Blending this rich style with cleaner, simpler, contemporary lines, The View is a thoroughly modern residential building with a heart and soul that harks back to a softer, more graceful period in Egypt’s history. 18 19 DESIGN In keeping with the name of the building, the residence’s features have been carefully designed to maximise the surrounding views. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the apartments and glass balcony railings enhance the effect of the panoramic views, while the sturdy, imported, double glazed windows keep noise levels to a minimum. The building is clad using imported limestone. The detailing and the columns are reminiscent of the art deco era that has come to symbolize many of Zamalek’s more prominent residences. 20 21 The discreet and elegant entrance of The View further showcases the art deco inspiration of the building’s architecture. The clean and simple lines of the lobby are your first glimpse inside the world of The View. These beautiful spaces (shown here) are designed by MA Design Studio and Design Point. The expertise of these design houses is available to customers of The View. 38 39 40 41 Peace of mind 42 43 SPA No luxury residential building would be complete without a state-of-the art gym for exclusive use by its residents. The View’s Wellbeing area houses a fully-equipped gym and the restorative benefits of a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, accessible via key card to residents. A heated, indoor lap pool also makes up part of the building’s spa area. 44 45 46 PARKING elevators At the basement level, The View has installed a unique parking system for Cairo that minimizes traffic and street parking. ‘Elevator’ parking allows your car to be housed within the structure of the building. Cars will be driven to an allocated spot and mechanically taken to their designated parking space. The option of one parking space per apartment will be offered to residents. Four elevators are available for exclusive use by the residents of The View. There are three super fast, smart elevators, where a computer calculates the quickest and most efficient sequence of floors to stop at. There is a fourth larger, heavy duty cargo lift for furniture and goods. 47 48 Bicycles Superintendent Bicycles are at the disposal of residents of The View. An easy, convenient and efficient way to get around town, cycling is the ultimate form of transport to battle Cairo’s traffic while keeping you healthy. The View’s superintendent will provide the traditional porter services as well as sourcing plumbers, carpenters, electricians and handymen for residents. The superintendent will also be responsible for overseeing the building’s maintenance staff. 49 50 waste disposal & building maintenance security & SAFEtY FEATURES Our state-of-the-art garbage disposal system allows each flat to dispose of their garbage into a hermetically sealed, self cleaning shute, accessible on every floor via the service core. A levy system is used to ensure the building’s façade remains clean at all times. Security is of paramount importance at The View. The building is equipped with emergency metal shutters in front of bullet proof security glass. Additionally, CCTV cameras monitor the building, the garage and the surrounding area.The security doors provided for each apartment are fortified and designed to withstand attempted break-ins. The building has been designed and planned to include state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment and technology.
