My faith in God, mankind and the power of love is constantly renewed through the countless selfless actions of so many people who desire no recognition or earthly reward. They serve out of duty and because to do so brings them closer to God. Their example of love is the most powerful force on earth and I have been lucky enough to have shared in it. Inspiration is at an all-time high as this past year God has blessed all of us with a new Holy Father. In a very short time, Pope Francis has become one of the world’s most influential leaders. For us at Catholic Charities, the message from Pope Francis is a powerful affirmation of our daily work. We truly believe that our faith cannot be fully realized until service to the poor and suffering in our midst is made a priority by each of us. We are infinitely motivated by the words of the Holy Father and here are some of our favorite quotes: “To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, in the face of Jesus.” “A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth, and not simply to close the gap between the affluent and those who must be satisfied with the crumbs falling from the table, but above all to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being.” “I am thinking of what St Ignatius told us…He pointed out two criteria on love. The first: love is expressed more clearly in actions than in words. The second: there is greater love in giving than in receiving.” I ask that you prayerfully consider the words of Pope Francis and to hear his ‘call to service’ to the least of our brothers and sisters. As you review this Annual Report, please note the many opportunities that are available to serve the poor “concretely” by supporting the various programs of Catholic Charities and our mission of love. I promise that if you join us you will be inspired by the people you meet and the stories of the people we have served. If you already stand with us, I thank you for your continued support and compassion for all of God’s children. Sincerely, Steven E. Roach, M.S. Executive Director Catholic Charities Diocese of Springfield in Illinois agencyleadership president of the board Dear Friends in Christ, For almost 90 years, Catholic Charities has reached out with the heart and hands of Christ to serve the “least of our brothers and sisters” Most Rev. in the Diocese of Thomas John Springfield in Illinois. Paprocki Catholic Charities is Bishop, the manifestation of Catholic Diocese of our Catholic faith that Springfield in Illinois “extends to all the President, healing and empowering Catholic Charities Board of Directors presence of Jesus.” Catholic Charities embodies the corporal works of mercy by providing programs that support the young and old, those who are hungry or sick and those who have been abused or abandoned. This past year, Catholic Charities has expanded its services to include the new Mobile Food Pantry and Catholic Charities Legal Services (CCLS) programs. These new services provide direct relief to low income families as Catholic Charities continues to find ways to seek out those who are suffering and living in relative obscurity within our society. Our Holy Father has repeatedly reminded us about our duty as Catholics to remember the poor and to do everything in our power to ease their pain and show them the mercy of God’s love. Your financial support does just that as Catholic Charities directly impacts the lives of literally thousands of people in our Springfield Diocese every year. I ask you to continue your generosity this year. Please help Catholic Charities in its mission to address the needs of today’s families and to provide hope to the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Thomas J. Sara Edwards of Ramsey, IL, is the mother to three young boys, and she’s no stranger to the words, “Mom, I’m hungry.” “Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is proud to belong to COA’s Community of Excellence that includes more than 1,800 private and public organizations that serve over 7 million children, individuals, and families in the USA and beyond,” said Steven Roach, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Springfield Diocese. “COA accreditation attests that Catholic Charities meets the highest national standards and is delivering the best quality services in communities where we serve.” Dana Bailey of Fieldon, IL, lives on a modest income, and struggles to afford basic necessities, including food. Food insecurity is real and it is happening right here in central Illinois. Therefore, in an effort to address the thousands of people living in the Springfield Diocese who are unsure where their next meal is coming from, Catholic Charities initiated the Mobile Food Pantry program last August. Since August of 2013, the Mobile Food Pantry delivered 31,605 pounds of food to 1,577 individuals living in rural communities throughout the southern and eastern regions of the Diocese. agencyactivity Volunteers help unload and distribute food during the first Mobile Food Pantry run held in Shobonier on Aug. 16, 2013. Front row, left to right: Mary Davis, Brother Mark Scheckells, OFM, and Molly Jansen. Back row: Lonnie Jansen and Jim Meyer. Sara Edwards and Dana Bailey are just two of the people who consider the program a lifeline. “If it was far away, I wouldn’t be able to go,” said Edwards. In only five months, the Mobile Food Pantry program served 448 families in 13 different rural locations, including Fieldon, Shobonier, Jerseyville and Ramsey. Catholic Charities’ two refrigerated food trucks are stationed at area offices in Alton and Effingham and deliver to rural communities in the surrounding counties. As more funding becomes available, the Mobile Food Pantry will expand to serve additional areas in the Springfield Diocese. “We are trying our best to survive. If it wasn’t for the Mobile Food Pantry, I don’t know how we’d make it in our household. I really don’t,” said Bailey. The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as the recent experience of not knowing where you will get your next meal. “The government estimates that there are over 140,000 people in the Springfield Diocese who fall into this category,” said Catholic Charities’ Executive Director Steven Roach. “The Mobile Food Pantry provides the opportunity to seek out our neighbors in the surrounding rural communities who cannot get to us. If people who are suffering cannot get to us, we must find ways to reach them.” “I promise you, without this, we wouldn’t make it,” said Edwards. Catholic Charities recognized by COA for Quality and Service Excellence Roach indicated that Catholic Charities was first accredited by the Council on Accreditation in 2000. Catholic Charities Legal Services launched Catholic Charities Legal Services (CCLS) was established in 2013 with the mission that, regardless of a person’s ability to pay, every human being has the right to competent legal counsel. “‘Liberty and Justice for All’ is one of the foundational principles of the United States, and access to the courts is a great benefit of our free society. But, in reality, access to the court system is often limited to, or tilted greatly in favor of, those who can afford legal representation,” said CCLS Director Amy Maher. “Catholic Charities initiated the program to provide representation to indigent clients in civil matters.” CCLS offers underprivileged individuals in the Springfield Diocese the best legal counsel area lawyers can offer, as well as compassion, empathy, and a listening ear to all who come seeking help. In its first few months of service, the program already has a strong client base and is actively seeking lawyers for its volunteer panel to help assist people through the confusing maze of the legal system. The goal of CCLS is to provide assistance in civil areas in all of Catholic Charities eight area offices. “To face the legal system alone and unrepresented by counsel is a frightening and disheartening venture,” Catholic Charities’ Executive Director Steven Roach said. “We hope to liberate people from hopelessness to peace and justice through the law.” The Council on Accreditation (COA) has approved the reaccreditation of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois through June 30, 2017. The program was pioneered by Bishop Thomas John Paprocki last October with $1.5 million in cash proceeds from the sale of stock set aside ‘to benefit the poor’ by the late Arthur Robinson. The COA’s commitment to maintaining the highest level of standards and quality improvement is designed to identify providers that have set high performance standards for themselves and have made a commitment to their constituents to deliver the highest quality of services. The COA accredita- “The impact of this program will depend greatly on our partnerships with the legal communities of the Diocese and the generosity of our donors,” Bishop Paprocki said. “We need people to stand with us in this noble cause of giving a voice to the voiceless and empowering the powerless.” 2013 PROGRAM Totals Family-Based Services Extended Family Support 5 Clients Intact Family Services 235 Clients Post-Adoption Services 10 Clients Professional Counseling Solutions 520 Clients Residential Care 40 Residents Special Education 79 Students 9 Clients Eldercare Options 181 Clients Elderly Guardianship 82 Clients Faith in Action 297 Clients Meals on Wheels 375 Clients St. Anne Residence 25 Residents Strong for Life 45 Clients Community Services and Health Assistance Crisis Assistance 29,873 Clients Education and Advocacy 28,738 Clients Food Pantries MedAssist Mobile Food Pantry Resale Stores Rural Outreach C atholic Charities is privileged to touch the lives of thousands of individuals and families throughout the Springfield Diocese every year.
