Fall checklist for your 4
garden...
This wonderful summer season is coming to
an end as we approach
the Fall season. Fall is a
great time to spend in the
garden splitting overgrown perennials and
grasses, and planting new
plants. Your lawn will
need some attention (see
article in newsletter).
As Fall approaches
please see the Fall
checklist for your garden to help your landscape over winter, and
remember Fall is a great
time to be planting trees
and shrubs. Please see
our article on Moving
Trees (big or small…we
plant them all!!)
Our 25th Annual

“How do I make my
hydrangeas bloom more?”
This is one of the most
frequently asked questions we hear in regards
to hydrangeas. The easy
answer to this question is
fertilizer, which increases
the amount of nutrients
available to the plant,
thus promoting root,
leaf, and flower growth
throughout the season.
However,
pruning is
one of the
most important aspects
in caring for hydrangeas. Deadheading (different
than pruning) can be
done any time, if the old
blooms are removed
directly behind the
dead head. There are
two methods of pruning, each
for different
types of hydrangeas.

The Yellow Wood tree is a
medium growing, deciduous
tree which features a broad,
rounded crown and typically
grows 10-12 metres in height.
the Fall.
The most impressive feature of this tree is intensely
fragrant, wisteria-like, white
flowers that blooms in May.
In the spring the leaves open
as yellowish green, turn
bright green in summer, then
turn to a beautiful yellow in
The Yellow Wood tree is
an excellent low-maintenance
small shade tree, great for
residential lawns, and on
smaller properties. Also may
be planted near patios and
terraces making a great accent tree. Can also be effectively grouped on larger properties. The roots go deep, so
other plants may be easily
grown underneath. The Yellow Wood is a hardy zone 4-8
with no real pest or disease
concerns, best grown in a full
sun to part shade area.
Oxford Insta-Shade has a

Caring for your lawn before winter...
Your lawn is a very important part of your landscape. It is used as a carpet
for your outdoors all season
long, providing you with a
clean and tidy environment
around your property.
But…we do need to take care
of this lawn.
Fertilizing and over seeding
on a regular basis is a great
way to keep your lawn lush,
healthy and green. Grubs is a
growing concern for many
since the pesticide ban has
taken effect.
The natural
approach recommended
would be to
apply nematodes in the
Fall season,
usually when
the weather is
a bit cooler
and damp. As the nematodes
must be watered in and the
ground should stay damp for
about three days thereafter,
wait for a rainy day to apply!
Then you can
top dress with a
high end compost
and spread your
overseed mix.
Once the grass has
started to grow you
can apply a Fall
fertilizer to give it
a boost before the
winter sets in.
Visit Oxford Insta-Shade
to find out the best way to
have a beautiful outdoor carpet around your property for
years to come!

Did you know?
You may have to cut back some perennials during the summer, after they bloom.
Some because they look like they’re dying, others because they’re attacked by
mildew, and still others due to leave miner attack. After pruning, they will produce healthy foliage for most of the season if you spread compost at the foot of
the plant, or water with a perennial flower liquid fertilizer.
Fall checklist for your gar
den:
Before the first frost, spread
a layer of mulch around
trees and shrubs to protect
roots.
Winterize your Rose Bushe
s, Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Yews, Alberta Spruce
, and Upright Junipers.
 Many perennials need to be cut
back 15-20cm.
 Feed your lawn with Fall Fertili
zer; the nutrients will
help protect the grass throug
hout the winter and
gives it a good boost for nex
t spring.
 Protect your less hardy plants
when winter sets in by
wrapping them in burlap. Bu
rlap available in-store.
 Pull out your annuals and put
them on the compost
pile. Get your garden ready
and plant your springflowering bulbs like tulips,
daffodils, hyacinths etc.
 To get some good fall colour, pla
nt some hardy mums
and icicle pansies. We have
plenty in stock and they
are in full bloom.
