ichael Schlup makes his living
as a commercial real estate
developer, so he is no stranger
to seeing a building go from the ground
up. Still, it was a special treat for him
to use his professional skills to oversee
the construction of his 8,000-square
foot vacation home in Sunrise Beach.
As the general contractor, Schlup
used his own in-house construction
crew to do all of the required work.
The team broke ground on the home
in 2007 and completed the project
two years later. One of their biggest
obstacles was to level the ground by
blasting solid rock out of the 30-foot
hill where the home sits. They also
used the land’s natural rock to design
a complex, cascading waterfall, that
incorporates an in-ground infinity-edge
swimming pool, in the back gardens.

and his wife Michel, who live primarily in
Overland Park, Kansas, opted to outfit
their sprawling six bedroom, seven-anda-half bathroom mansion without the
help of an interior designer. The result
is quality, yet unpretentious décor that
doesn’t overwhelm the home’s luxurious
Old-World craftsmanship.
“You can see that the house has a
lot of character, and that there was a
lot of thought put into it,” says Schlup.
“We wanted a different look than what
you would typically see.”
On the lower level, the open kitchen
has a neutral color scheme of warm
