2003 WANADA OPEN SPECIAL EDITION
Cool Breezes, Hot Golf, Big Prizes & Fun for All
Three Holes-In–One No Bean Balls
M
id-May weather hereabouts is always unpredictable. But unlike last year’s torrential rain and tornados, the 2003 WANADA Open was enjoyed by
nearly 400 participants under cool, breezy, overcast
conditions that made for long drives, low scores – three
holes in one – and no bean balls!
As many will recall, broadcaster Johnny Holliday,
the well-known voice of the Maryland Terrapins (and
many dealer ads), caught an errant drive to the head at
last year’s Open. So this year, he was awarded a special
WANADA hard hat at the evening banquet and awards
celebration, which he again emceed in a typical lively
fashion. Holliday got a big laugh when he ribbed his
near assassin, John Crispeno of AutoTrader.com, for
“hitting a driver on a par 3” last year.
Out on the emerald green, lush from the April rain,
courses at Indian Spring Country Club yielded an enjoyable day of play for golfers. With a Shotgun Start
and Best Ball scoring, low team scores of 58 were
carded by the DARCARS 355 Toyota foursome on the
Chief course and the Sheehy Auto Stores team on the
Valley course. For the Sheehy team, it was a repeat of
their win on the Chief last year.

Even more remarkable were three – yes, three! –

especially so for John Lehler, John Lehman of Fitzgerald Auto Malls, and Mike man who shows off his holeSundergill of B&R Associates. Unfortunately, none oc- in-one ball; while “Beat the

Open lore.
Special guests at the cocktail reception and banquet
that evening included Anne Witt, the new acting director of the DC Department of Motor Vehicles, who made a
favorable impression on dealers with her stated commitment to improve DMV services.
With Holliday providing ample wit and a quick pace through all the prize giveaways, an evening highlight
was the “Beat the Pro” Contest with Bortie Twiford of B&R Associates officiating. The winner-take-all was
Doug Dugger of Ourisman Rockmont Chevrolet, who left with a whooping $1,520 in cash! There were also
mucho prizes and WANADA Open golf shirts for everyone. In short, there were no losers.

Rent-A-Car. However, Ed Offterdinger of Beers &

those who did, their names were dropped in the hopper and three names were drawn for a chance to win.
All contestants were offered a ready $100 to cash in
their tickets and take a seat. None did. However,
Doug Dugger of Ourisman Rockmont Chevrolet
boldly bid $200 to replace one contestant and, in the
end, drew the lucky key to unlock a briefcase stuffed
with the grand prize of $1,520 in cash!
Dinner Prizes
In addition to the above prizes, the 2003
WANADA Open also offered attendees a chance to
win three “Luck-of-the-Draw” prizes, and for the
really lucky, seven grand prizes were awarded (two
of which were set aside for kindred-line members).
In all cases, the lucky ones had to be present to win.
