Casket Works #25
Dr. Strangename or: How I Learned to Stop
Worrying and Love the Names
One of my favorite jobs here is coming up with all the names for our miniatures.
It's a small creative outlet (no pun intended) for me, and believe it or not, I put
a lot of time and thought into each name. Okay, maybe not *each* name. But a
lot of names. Sometimes I spend way too much time coming up with names, but
then again, some just come to me in an instant.
The one online reference I use the most is a site called 20000-names.com. It has
a lot of good names all organized by geography, gender, genre, and so on. It's
come in handy many, many times when I've been up against a deadline and trying to come up with just the right name for a piece.
I'll tell you, even though I've worked hard for my Miniature Naming merit
badge, one false slip and it's crotch kicking time. If people like the names, they
keep it to themselves, locked away in a tiny satin box that they keep under their
pillow. "Good night, sweet fantasy name," they seem to say, caressing it like their
favorite LOL cat.
However, if they hate it, they can’t wait to track me down or ambush me, like a
ninja in a yellow Uma Thurman jumpsuit.
"Hey, Hawkins!" they yell.

Laughing, pointing accusingly at my bespectacled head, they blurt it out, sounding more and more like Paw Rugg from the Hillbilly Bears*. "Heh heh, so that
new succubus mini, her name's Quesadilla**, right? Quesadilla? Dang, Hawkins,
you're a dern fool galoot, ain't ya? Naming miniatures after Mexican food?
Shoot, you must be runnin' outta ideas. What's next, Taco the Dwarf? Har har
hardy har har!!!" Knee slapping ensues.
*Hillbilly Bears. Go Google it. I dare you.
**Hey, Hasslehoff, it's "Kasadya". Kuh-SOD-yuh, not "Kay-suh-DEE-ya". Stop
eating horse apples and watching reruns of Hart to Hart, you snuggie wearer.
Five years later, and I still get crap like that. Ask me sometime about Yera the
Water Buffalo Minotaur.

Startled by this sneak attack, I respond with a pithy, "Uh, you say sumpin?"

Master Series Miniatures
Introduces
Dragoth the Defiler!
Bob Ridolfi's latest submission for Master Series Miniatures is this
magnificent Dragoth the Defiler! He's brooding darkly upon his
throne, while his faithful minionette stands by ready to hand him
his armor should any pesky adventurers arrive. He's our standard
heroic 25mm scale, so he makes a wonderful adversary for you campaign, or just a lovely display
piece! He also includes 4 different heads, so you can make him a Dire-Dead, Ghoul, Vampire, or put
on his helmet!
For more on Dragoth's personal feelings about this sculpt, and an insight into the mind of a defiler,
check out his interview on page 40!

Sophie: We're sitting down this issue with our newest Master Series Miniatures superstar, Dragoth the Defiler.
Judy: and Judy.
Sophie: Oh, right. Yes, Judy of course. Now, Mr. Defiler - may I call you Dragoth?
Or how about Dray, Just Goth?
Dragoth: You can call me whatever you like, Sweetie.
Judy: Hrummmph.
Sophie: Sophie, please, Mr. Defiler. Now, how exactly did you first get into defiling?
Dragoth: It's a growth industry. As a young vampire, defiling always fascinated me.
When I became strong enough, I decided, what the heck, let's try it. Why should
Judas have all the fun, after all, right, Sweetie?
Sophie: It's Sophie, please. And what about you, er, Judy?
Judy: For me, it was a career move I pretty much had to make after Lehman Brothers went out of business.
Sophie: Uh-huh. So, Tell me a little bit about you two. That is, what exactly is your relationship?
Judy: We're engaged. Well, almost. I mean, I'm sure he's going to!
Dragoth: Judy's a little overexcited, you know how it is with the young girls. She's my assistant. She mostly just holds my
helmet. A monkey could do her job really... is Kabaka the Ape Lord looking for work? She means nothing to me. You,
Sweetie, are the one I'd like to hear more about. Those wings...

ReaperCon
NEW FOR 2009! ALL MODELS from ALL MANUFACTURERS are allowed to enter!
CATEGORIES
Painters: In the Painters Division, judging is based
entirely upon painting skill. Although scratchbuilt and converted figures are not excluded, they are judged as if they
were stock commercial castings. There is no size limit—
anything from a 15mm solider to a 15” resin garage kit is
allowed.
Open: The Open Division is intended primarily for
scratchbuilt and converted figures, vignettes, and dioramas; both painting and sculpting/basing technique will be
assessed, as well as entry creativity. Scratch sculpts are
allowed and encouraged in this category (though of course
they must also be painted!).
Again, there is no size limit.
Ordnance: The Ordnance Division is open to vehicles
and machines of war from any genre, of any size. Models
may be stock or converted/sculpted, and are judged purely
on the execution of the mechanical aspects of the entry. If
there are crew models which cannot be removed, they will
be ignored in the judging.
Young Painters: All subject matter allowed, open to
kids aged 16 and under. Medals and certificates only will
be awarded in this category.
40
CONTEST RULES
1. Any number of entries are permitted per painter per category. The judges will choose the best of
your presented entries in each category to be judged.
2. No basing regulations will be imposed as to size or particular base to be used, though all models
must have a base. Basing counts for a small amount in Painters and Ordnance, but is much more
important in Open. Be creative!
3. By submitting an entry you agree to allow the model to be photographed by Reaper for use in ads,
promotions, and galleries. All entry forms for submissions must be signed by the painter.
4. Painters must personally submit all entries. An admissions badge to ReaperCon is required for
entry.
5. Entrants may only enter models painted by them personally. Discovery that a model was not painted by the person who entered it will result in the barring of said individual from all future Reaper
events.
6. Models which have appeared previously online or in publications are allowed, but models previously entered under the old competition format here at ReaperCon can not be entered again. Likewise,
models entered this year cannot be entered again in any following years.
7. In the case of confusion regarding which category a model might belong in, all decisions of the
Reaper judges are final.
8. Entrants must have done all painting and conversion work on their models themselves.
Submissions: Entries accepted from 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 14th, to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 15th.
Judging is Friday night. For any convention attendees who cannot attend until Saturday, some late
entries may continue to be accepted Saturday morning as space permits.
Prizes: Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded, as well as Certificates of Merit (Honorable
Mention). All judged entries which deserve awards get awards! The top three best Reaper models in
Painters, Open, and Ordnance win the coveted Sophie Trophies. Best in Show awards win cash
prizes, and there will be loads of special awards and gift certificates as well!

COMBAT ASSAULT VEHICLE
(An Interveiw with Dragoth the Defiler, Continued from Page 40)
Sophie: Sophie, please. Now, Mr. Defiler, how do you feel about
having been immortalized as a Master Series Miniature after having
been one of the foundation figures from Dark Heaven?
Dragoth: Well, I'm pretty much immortal anyway, being a vampire
lord in charge of legions of Dire Dead, but it was a real honor. I'd
already been honored once before, getting a version of me without my
throne, but making it to Master Series - I mean, alongside Maria
Roseblade and Monique DeNoir! I didn't get to meet them, of course,
and the DeNoir family has that restraining order on me, but still....
My one complaint, of course, is that I think I could have been made
bigger if they hadn't put the little girl in.
Judy: I'm not a little girl, I'm your fiancee and Mr. Ridolfi put me in
there because we belong together, you stupid ape!
Dragoth: Why don't you go run along and hold my helmet over
there? Grownups are talking, dear.
Judy: Hrummph.

An Interview with Dragoth the Defiler, Continued from Page 48)
Sophie: Moving on! What does the future hold for you, now that you've
become a Master Series Miniature? What could possibly top that?
Judy: I'm planning for a summer wedding, not too big, just a couple of hundred
of my ghoulfriends. I'd like to have it outdoors, but since that might make the
groom and most of his family combust, I'm willing to compromise.
Dragoth: My defiling will keep me busy for most of the spring and summer.
Things slow down a little in autumn, but they pick right up again for the big holiday defiling rush. Plus with my appearances at the summer conventions, I just
don't know. It’s all part of my Comprehensive Defiling Strategy, culminating in
a massive surprise defilement at... I really shouldn’t say.
Sophie: I see. Are you a little concerned about sharing shelf space with Jonas
Kane and Magnus, Vampire Hunter?

P-65: the metal formula that made Reaper famous!! It's a
blend of white metals designed to capture every subtle detail
as well as allow for maximum metal flexibility for straightening
and posing. Bringing this metal formula back into production
is a big step for us so we felt it only appropriate to name the
new line P-65 in honor of its heritage.
P-65 is a lead based alloy similar to 60% lead - 40% tin solder and is the perfect mix to cast miniatures in. The P-65
miniature line is designed specifically for the adult modeler
and is being released to give them a choice in how they spend
their hobby dollars.

Dragoth: I was a little apprehensive at first, but then Bob included these other heads with me, so I can
have my original Dire-Dead visage, and a really cool Ghoul Lord look, plus my battle helmet Judy: Right here, Dragy-kins.
Dragoth: NOT NOW, JENNY! Where was I? Oh yes, my head options. Since I have those, nobody
entering my throne room is going to be sure what I am exactly, so I'm prepared for those mooks. Hey,
If you have time, Sweetie, I think I can show you some of my optional parts, say tonight, around
midnight?
((Ka-TANG!!))
Sophie: Well, that's about it for today, It seems Dragoth has decided to take a nap with a faceful of
helmet... Reporting for Casketworks, I'm Sophie -Judy: And I'm Judy!
Sophie: -- and this has been "An Interview with Dragoth".
Judy: And Judy!
Sophie: See you next time!
(uncomfortable silence)
Judy: So, do you have any openings for a bright, ambitious undead half-fiend? I'm particularly good at
holding things.
Sophie: No thanks, I'm not that into helmets.

According to Internet Rumor, a big shot Hollywood producer (Spielberg! *OMG!*) is supposed to be calling us
any day now to cement a movie deal for Chronoscope:
The Movie! Apparently our Super-Smash Mega-Hit
Miniatures line would make a kick-ass Super-Smash MegaHit Movie. We plan to accept, of course, provided they
give us full control over casting our favorite figures. So, If
you're paying attention, Mr. S. , Here we go!
As our hero, Intergalactic Space Marine and 87-points-ofarticulation action figure Franchisee, Nick Stone, we want to
see Bruce Willis. Our wives assure us he's dead sexy, and we
all know he's super tough and can pull off those action
sequences. Yippe-ki-yay.... wrong movie!
(Editor's note: Bryan, you write an
article as an excuse to show hot babes,
and you give me Bruce Willis? This
had better improve. - Ron)
As our heroine, the time-travelling bombshell that also
happens to grace this issue's front cover, Sascha DuBois,
we need to cast Kate Beckinsale. She's ultra hot, good in
action and sci-fi movies, and it gives us an excuse to show
this super hot picture!
(Editor's note: If Kate's not available,
I want Nicole Kidman. Heck, I want
Nicole Kidman anyway! - Ron)
For Best Supporting Actress (We're gonna sweep the oscars!)
we're gonna go with a tried-and-true typecast! Rosie, the
Chronotechnician that fixes equipment, kicks ass, and makes
tents in our underoos can only ever be portrayed by Kaylee.
I mean, Jewel Staite, the actress who played Kaylee in Joss
Whedon's Firefly.
(Editor's note: Thank you,
Captain Obvious. Remind
me why we pay you? - Ron)
Finally, our villain, Professor L.T. Froschmeister, mad
scientist extraordinaire. Such madness can only adequately be portrayed by the erudite John Malkovich in heavy cranial prosthetics.
Of course, to let him into our picture, he's going to have to beg forgiveness publically for being John Malkovich.
(Editor's note: Another Dude.
Can we pick a female to play
Dr. Froschmeister? Maybe
Nicole Kidman? - Ron)
