As we embark on a new year and a new decade we all take a moment to reflect upon
what we have achieved to date and what aspirations we hold for the decade to come.
Much has changed since the beginning of the new millennium, not least the technologies
available to us, which have grown substantially over the last ten years, changing the way
we conduct both our personal and professional lives.

Vets Recommend DogPause
Vets recommend DogPause because it slows down the pace of eating, and fast eating has been linked to various digestive issues, including bloat.
Vets also recommend DogPause because obesity is a major issue for dogs, and it's often a result of accidental overfeeding. The DogPause dog bowl,
due to its unique design, helps with portion control. Below are comments from various vets that have permitted us to post their feedback on the bowl.
This bowl has some great health benefits...
As a veterinarian I am presented with questions from owners regarding how rapidly their pets eat and what can be done about it. Their concerns range from choking
to gagging and even regurgitating or vomiting food shortly after eating. I can relate personally with my Golden Retriever "Toby". Labrador and Golden Retrievers are
classic examples of food oriented chow hounds. Toby routinely belches following inhaling his meal, which is one of the many reasons he has earned the nickname
"Gross Dog". Certainly these are not the only breeds known to eat at an alarming speed.
Even greater risks are associated with breeds known to be predisposed to gastric torsion or what is referred to as bloat. Slowing down food intake is one of several
steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of this serious problem.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much difference there was in the time it took both my dogs to eat their meals when I began using the DogPause bowls. In general,
when I speak to pet owners regarding rapid food ingestion, I encourage feeding 2 meals a day rather than one large meal a day. This combined with a product like the
DogPause Bowl could go a long way towards reducing many of the unpleasant effects associated with rapid food intake.
Another hidden benefit of the DogPause bowl is helping owners realize just how much food their pet is receiving. Obesity is a "HUGE" problem in the pet population
with statistics indicating 40-50% of our pets are overweight. Too many owners just heap food in their pets bowl and have no real idea how much food their pet
consumes a day. The divided bowl helps people recognize better the amount of food they are giving their pet.
My only fear now is that I will sit down to dinner one night and find my meal served in a DogPause bowl rather than my usual plate. Brad Middlebrooks, DVM, Ohio
Very clever, very simple design...
I think the bowl is a very clever design, especially in its simplicity. The main benefit to slowing dogs down during eating is that dogs that take more time to eat
swallow less air. The dogs that swallow more air are at a higher risk for developing GDV (gastric dilatation volvulous) which if it goes untreated in most cases is life
threatening. I like this bowl a lot. Trent Gall, DVM, Colorado
I recommend this bowl...
As a veterinarian, I see the adverse effects of what I call "inhalation eating" on a frequent basis, which in certain cases can lead to major surgery. Gastric DilationVolvulus (bloat) often goes unrecognized as canines cannot verbalize their distress. Symptoms include salivating, panting, flatulence, agitation, futile vomiting, and
swelling in the abdomen. More often than not, when your dog is eating quickly and without properly breaking down the food before starting digestion, it leads to
one, if not all of these uncomfortable and potentially dangerous conditions.
Fast eating patterns and behaviors can also cause megaesophagus from trying to consume large amounts of food quickly. When large bites are taken and
swallowed too quickly it stretches the esophagus. This is why dogs choke and gag on food when they use open feeders that do not control their intake amounts.
Taking smaller bites reduces that stretching and also helps regulate and maintain proper digestion.
Much like humans, when food is eaten too quickly and not properly broken down by chewing and pausing, it can lead to indigestion and add additional strain on
the canine's gastrointestinal tract. Patients come in with a sick canine suffering from these symptoms and end up with costly vet bills. Until now there was no
simple solution to the vomiting, gas, and bloat caused by uncontrolled fast eating and poor eating behavior. Owners often do not have the time to re-train the dog
or to monitor every eating cycle to eradicate negative eating patterns.
In addition to these conditions, canine obesity is a growing concern among the vetrinary profession. Most of my canine patients that come in for obesity try to get
food down as fast as possible and in large amounts, Canine obesity leads to problems such as cardiac arrest, hypertension, hypothyroidism and decreases quality
of the dog's life, with limited options to change behaviors.
When I first saw DogPause, my reaction was, "It is so simple... It works. It's genius." As a vet, I like to see products that are harmless, natural and extremely
effective in promoting canine health. DogPause is a natural and cost effective way to prevent inhalation eating and promotes positive eating behavior.
DogPause can decrease canine anxiety, reduce indigestion, and be an important part of an overall strategy to reduce the risk of obesity. DogPause works by simply
prohibiting dogs from taking large bites of food -- forcing them to chew, pause and digest. This allows the dog to literally slow down and relax during feeding time.
Many dogs will find they do not need to eat as much food when they are slowed down and will leave some for later.
I recommend DogPause to my clients that have fast-eating dogs, and I suggest they try the bowl for at least five feedings. Some dogs have such bad eating habits
that they need a few feedings with the bowl to re-learn how to eat at a more normal pace. Doug Hill, DVM, Colorado

This unique training tool has been specifically
designed to help healthcare professionals,

As waste becomes an increasingly complex and costly area, the need for all
healthcare providers to have a strong waste segregation policy is widely
recognised. Experts estimate that up to 70% of healthcare waste is currently
being disposed of in the wrong container, which not only has significant
financial implications, but could also pose potential hazards to staff and the
wider environment.
The new online waste segregation game has been designed as the perfect
compliment to on-site training and covers the range of typical waste streams
produced in a veterinary surgery. This new online tool can be accessed from
any internet-enabled computer and provides a simple and fun way of testing
your, or your staff’s knowledge of waste segregation.
Despite the fact that the colour-coding and waste segregation Guidance was
issued in 2006, many veterinary staff are still unsure about how to correctly
deal with waste. Whilst the Guidance has been widely accepted and promoted
by veterinary bodies, there is little doubt that communicating with front-line
staff remains a difficult area.
The PHS game has been designed to encourage staff members at all levels,
including clinical, administrative and maintenance staff, to test their knowledge
in a very easy-to-use and realistic way. With scenario’s to choose from including
general treatment room, pharmacy and specialist treatment area, the game
offers the opportunity to test your knowledge of a wide range of common
waste streams. Using a very simple ‘click-and-drag’ function, players are asked
to drop a range of items into the correctly coloured bins. Each item is carefully

Keep horses safe this Winter says

THE BLUE CROSS
With a recent spate of unfortunate accidents
involving horses becoming stuck in ditches, The
Blue Cross animal welfare charity is offering
advice to horse owners on how to keep their
horses safe this Winter.
Kerstin Alford, equine welfare director at The Blue Cross said:
“We are warning horse owners to be particularly vigilant this
winter as the onset of wet and muddy conditions can create
unexpected hazards. This year could be even worse than
usual as many fields have inadequate grazing after the
exceptionally dry summer so horses are more likely to forage
in ditches and hedgerows for food. So it’s essential to check
your horse regularly and ensure that fields are suitably fenced.”
Molly, a two-year-old native pony being cared for by The
Blue Cross, was a victim of neglect and misfortune in her
former life. Her owner had left her to run wild in a field

Centaur Services Limited
BOC Medical
Why pay more for a medical gas service than you have to?
BOC and Centaur Services
Today 1600 veterinary practices in the UK are aligned to the
Centaur/BOC medical gas contract .
To accommodate different customer needs, BOC Medical
has an extensive cylinder package programme. The range
consists of traditional steel cylinders and a range of
lightweight cylinders.
BOC Medical’s range of lightweight cylinders now also
include the new ZX oxygen cylinder. While the ZX cylinder
has the same size as an F size steel cylinder it contains more
than twice the amount of gas.
Like BOC Medical’s HX and CD cylinders, the ZX features an
integral valve system with built-in regulator and flowmeter,
that makes administering easier and eliminates the need for
buying and maintaining regulators and flowmeters.
For those customers with high oxygen demands BOC
Medical also provide fixed liquid oxygen systems (LC200)
which may be a more cost effective approach and are also
fully maintained by BOC Medical.
By signing a Centaur/BOC medical gas contract practices
will receive:
• Discounted cylinder rental
• Discounted BOC delivery
• Up to 48% discount off BOC medical gas
• Quality service from the medical gas market leader
