RICHMOND P.L.
: SLADEN INTRODUCTION The papers under consideration are the personal, l i t e r a r y and business manuscripts of Douglas Brooke Wheelton Sladen (1856-1947) a popular novelist, journalist and writer of the earlier part of this century.
He bequeathed his library and papers to the Borough on account of his long residence there mostly i n the Avenue House, the Green, now demolished. The manuscripts consist of seventy-four volumes of wet-copy letter books ('flimsies ) into which have been stuck 1
Sladen s correspondence, drafts of books, mementoes and other 1
miscellanea.
There i s an approximate division of subject matter between each volume, but within the books the order i s minimal.
F i l i n g was performed at irregular intervals by either Sladen or his secretary. This method of storage has the disadvantage of making some items d i f f i c u l t to read as they have to be deciphered through a layer of gum and tissue paper. Where damp has affected a volume, the gum has dissolved and the papers are loose. The collection as i t now stands only covers the years 1888-1921. This means that there is very l i t t l e information on Sladen s youth, early career i n Australia, the 1
United States and Japan and his l i f e after his effective retirement following his second marriage i n 1920. 1
Sladen s career was long and varied.
The son of a West London s o l i c i t o r , he attended Cheltenham College and Trinity College, Oxford and then l e f t , i n 1879, for Australia where he intended to enter politics under the protection of his uncle, S i r Charles Sladen, prime minister of Victoria. In fact, after reading for the bar at Melbourne, his interests took a more l i t e r a r y turn and he obtained the appointment to the chair of Modern History at Sydney University.
This, and the publication of some volumes of verse, caused him to opt for a career i n letters, a resolve strengthened by his uncle's premature death i n 1884.
He found, however, that Australia would not support him and his wife and child and therefore decided to return to the more cultured surroundings of London forthwith. RICHMOND P.L.
: SLADEN Although he had begun by w r i t i n g poetry, and
continued to do so f o r the remainder of h i s l i f e , he knew
w e l l that there was more p r o f i t i n journalism and prose
works -ind i t was to these forms t\ct
he mainly turned. His
l i f e from 1888 was that of a successful professional w r i t e r ,
based f i r s t l y i n Kensington and then Richmond, whose books
included popular novels, p o l i t i c a l pamphlets,
and t r a v e l guides.
s o c i e t y handbooks
The preparation of the t r a v e l books caused
the only disturbances i n h i s l i f e and, over the years, he
embarked on lengthy tours of America, Japan, North A f r i c a and
Southern Europe.
These produced both material f o r p r a c t i c a l
books and l o c a l colour f o r h i s novels. When i n London, he
pursued an a c t i v e s o c i a l career, holding regular at-homes f o r
the l i t e r a r y , a r t i s t i c and t h e a t r i c a l sets, and as a prominent
1
member of the Authors , New Vagabonds' and Argonauts' Clubs.
He d i d much j o u r n a l i s t i c work, f i r s t as l i t e r a r y e d i t o r o f
Today, then as l i t e r a r y c r i t i c of Queen and l a t t e r l y as a f r e e
lance.
He also succeeded i n launching two handbooks f o r London
society: Who's Who, the present form of which i s owing to h i s
work i n 1897, and The Green Book of London Society i n 1910-11. The papers which he l e f t are valuable f o r a number of reasons, not l e a s t f o r the l i g h t which they throw on the workings o f l i t e r a r y l i f e during t h i s period.
Sladen was a member of a group which included people such as J.K. Jerome, Conan Doyle, Rider Haggard, Charles Garvice, Walter Besant, Marie C o r e l l i , H a l l Caine, Anthony Hope, W.J. Locke, Irene Osgood, S.H. Jeyes, G i l b e r t Parker and F. Frankfort Moore. These were popular, professional w r i t e r s rather than i n t e l l e c t u a l s , and a study of any one of them i s o f use i n s o f a r as i t reveals the interactions w i t h i n the c i r c l e as w e l l as the great changes which were effected i n the p r o f e s s i o n a l 1
w r i t e r s status a t t h i s time.
his
Sladen being n a t u r a l l y gregarious, papers contain much information OA. these points, even though he was not p a r t i c u l a r l y intimate with any one o f them.
The value comes perhaps from the quantity, not the q u a l i t y . . The c o l l e c t i o n i s also u s e f u l f o r a study of the sources o f income a v a i l a b l e to a free-lance w r i t e r .
Without
f i l m and t e l e v i s i o n r i g h t s , output had to be high i n order to maintain an adequate standard of l i v i n g unless you were astronomically successful.
Several b h i f t s had to be resorted - II

to i n order to extract the mximum reward from any one work.
The papers show how Sladen managed h i s p u b l i c i t y and sales,
introducing for the f i r s t
time i n England, he claimed, the
American practice o f the press release,
the b l u r b ' .
1
They
a l s o i l l u s t r a t e how he would extract the maximum dividend
from any single investment.
Thus h i s t r i p to Japan i n 1890
r e s u l t e d i n The Japs a t Home (1892), A Japanese Marriage (1895),
Queer Things about Japan (1903), and More Queer Things about
Japan (1904) and h i s stay i n Egypt i n 1907-8 was s u f f i c i e n t
f u e l f o r Egypt and the E n g l i s h (1908), The Tragedy of the Pyramids
(1909), Queer Things about Egypt (1910), O r i e n t a l Cairo (1910)
and The Curse of the N i l e (1913). Another aspect of f i n a n c i a l
management i s revealed i n h i s p r a c t i s e of extracting free
accommodation and, i f p o s s i b l e , transport f o r h i s party i n return
f o r a favourable mention i n the ensuing book.
Sladen's business a c t i v i t i e s were not only confined
to the w r i t i n g of books.
He acted as a l i t e r a r y agent to the
Japanese a r t i s t and w r i t e r Yoshio Markino, and to minor n o v e l i s t s
and playwrights such as Frank Butterworth, Lady Catherine Milnes
G a s k e l l , Olive Simpson and the A u s t r a l i a n poetess and w r i t e r
Margaret Thomas, and there i s other material r e l a t i n g to various
business projects which he had i n hand such as a house agency,
the sale of a Richmond a i r c r a f t firm a f t e r the war, the
establishment of the breeding of black foxes i n Scotland and the
making of films i n England and America.
Sladen was not p o l i t i c a l l y active and h i s p o l i t i c a l
views, such as they were, seem to have v a r i e d considerably
during h i s l i f e .
But although predominantly conservative, he
had some s u r p r i s i n g left-wing contacts, notably w i t h H.M. Hyndman
and h i s w i f e .
He was o c c a s i o n a l l y prepared to enter into public
a f f a i r s where h i s own reputation or income would p r o f i t by i t .
Thus there i s much information on the Recruiting Bands project
of 1915, i n i t i a t e d by Sladen, as w e l l as on trade unionism and
labour r e l a t i o n s as a r e s u l t of a pamphlet, Cosmos, issued
under h i s name i n 1919.
Although the papers r e l a t i n g to h i s business and
public s o c i a l l i f e are extensive,
there are fewer of an
intonate character which might shed l i g h t on closer r e l a t i o n s h i p s .
- Ill RICHMOND P.L.
: SLADEN One reason for this is that he had comparatively few friends whilst possessing a host of acquaintances. Amongst those who figure more frequently in his general correspondence are Yoshio Markino, Frank Richards, F:*ank Butterworth, Eustache de Lorey, Eleanor Mordaunt, Norma Lorimer, Olave Potter, Ethel Stevens and Maude ffoulkes. The lastfive named were at some time either companions to Sladen s first wife or his secretaries. 1
His wife was partially incapacitated after the birth of their f i r s t child and Norma Lorimer was her companion, acting as hostess at most of the Sladen functions, for many years after their return from Australia. All of these young ladies became novelists and writers of greater or lesser repute usually having received a sound training from Sladen for whom they used to compose book reviews for Queen and other journals. Amongst others with whom Sladen had long and close relations can also be mentioned Irene Osgood, Arthur Conan Doyle, Geo. B. Burgin, C.N. and A.M. Williamson and Lena Ashwell. But the content of their letters is generally slight. But there is no doubt that, whatever its limitations, this collection will be of the greatest use for the study of the role of the author in this period, the social relationships of different groups of authors and intellectuals and for particular subjects such as Australian poetry, the relationship of American and English literary practices, the origins of Who's Who and the economic bases of professional writing. Method of listing Owing to limited time i t has not proved possible to Each volume of the manuscripts compile an item by item l i s t .
has been taken in turn and described individually with a note made of more prominent correspondents or groups of papers. Thus the l i s t is selective and does not give, for instance, any indication of the number of letters from any particular person nor, normally, the size of any particular group within a volume. There is an index to the names, institutions and some subjects mentioned in the l i s t . IV

RICHMOND P.L.
: SLADEN Bibliographical note The majority of people mentioned in the l i s t can
be identified from Who's Who . Sladen himself wrote two
volumes of memoirs, although the later one largely repeats
the f i r s t .
Again many of the people mentioned in the l i s t
are described therein. The memoirs are Twenty Years of my
Life (1915)
and My Long Life (1939).
Sladen also appeared on B.B.C. television in 1938 in
connection with Who's Who but there was, in 1969, no record
of
thi3
in the B.B.C. archives.
