A program for battered women and their children.
Ready to Help
As bruises and cuts begin to heal on a battered woman, she still
faces a barrier to her safety—navigating the legal system labyrinth.
Providing help in Northwest Hennepin County, the Home Free
Community Program advocates work with victims of domestic
assault throughout the court process ensuring appropriate systems
responses to the crime and securing the woman’s safety.
For battered women seeking help, the Home Free Community
Program is a secure place to begin the process of reclaiming peace
of mind and personal safety. From the first call to the crisis line,
advocates offer help to get and keep domestic violence victims
safe. It may mean moving into the Home Free Shelter for a time,
staying with a friend or family member, and may also mean the
arrest of the abuser. Experienced and well-trained advocates are
available to help battered women file for legal documents, provide
information and referrals for related services, and assist in finding
emergency shelter.
Serving nearly 700 women each year, the Community Program
provides advocacy and support services for victims of domestic
violence. Working with police and city prosecutors, advocates
provide battered women with assistance in obtaining Orders for
Protection, monitor compliance of assailants with court orders
and probation conditions, and work to ensure city domestic assault arrest policies are observed.
Founded in 1984, the Community Program also offers a support
group helping victims feel less alone, better prepared to address
the current violence in their homes, and know what to do should
it happen again. The meetings are conducted in a safe setting and
include childcare.
Located in a store-front office in Plymouth, the Community Program serves much of Northwest Hennepin County. From the
larger cities of Plymouth and New Hope to the rural communities
of Loretto, Rogers, Champlin and Corcoran, victims of domestic
violence benefit from the Program’s services.
Along the path to ending domestic violence, the Home Free
Community Program advocates work for the safety of victims.
With compassion, knowledge and experience they provide much
needed support and encouragement. And most importantly, they
work on behalf of victims to ensure appropriate and coordinated
systems responses to domestic assault.
Laura Landis, Community Program Coordinator, has worked for
30 years in programs supporting victims of domestic violence.

Our mission is to provide battered women and their children with safety, support, and information so they have an
opportunity to explore alternatives to living with a violent partner.

tatistics on domestic violence
made national headlines again in
February when President Obama
spoke via video at the Grammy
Awards. He said 1 out of 4 women
will experience domestic violence
in her life. The added fact that 30
to 60% of abusers also target children in the home, underscores the
need for Home Free’s services. The
shelter provides women experiencing
domestic abuse a safe place to begin
healing and planning for their future.
In 2014 we operated at 103% capacity
clothes, blankets and personal care items
for women and children. Financial gifts
sent in after each newsletter helps us
provide much needed services for battered women and their children. I’m
filled with gratitude for all the support
Home Free receives from individuals
and organizations in our community.
Each act of generosity toward the shelter
has an immediate impact on the families
and saw many families make great strides we serve. On their behalf I thank you.

Double Your Donation
A
n easy and effective way
to boost donations to Home
Free is through corporate
matching gifts. Hundreds of
small, mid-sized, and large
companies match employee
donations to nonprofits at
rates of 1:1, 2:1, and higher.
Research shows that each year an estimated $6-10 billion in available matching funds go unclaimed, and the steps for arranging
matching gifts are quite easy.
In many companies, a completed matching gift form and receipt of
your gift to Home Free are the only items needed to put the ball in
motion. Forms are available
online or through employer
human resources departments.
In a few weeks, a check is sent
to Home Free listing you as
the initiator of the matching
gift donation.

24 - Hour Crisis Line - (763) 559-4945
2014 By The Numbers
I
n 2014 Home Free received more than 4,000 requests for
services or emergency housing. Throughout the year, women’s advocates assisted callers to the 24-hour crisis line
providing information, referrals, and assistance getting to the
Home Free shelter.
The shelter operated at 103% capacity in 2014 and the staff
worked hard to accommodate as many battered women as
possible. And although the turn-away rate (reflecting maximum capacity at the shelter) was 59%, it decreased from
64% the previous year. When callers experiencing domestic
abuse cannot be accommodated, advocates use the Day One
Program to check open bed status of other battered women’s
shelters in the state and facilitate the referral. Additionally,
when callers not in a domestic abuse situation reach out to
Home Free, they are referred to agencies or shelters that
serve their needs. Each call to Home Free is treated with
respect and assistance.
A big reason Home Free is able to operate beyond capacity,
provide thousands of advocacy services, and work to raise
awareness about domestic violence is the incredible staff of
volunteers. Working as Advocates at the Shelter, Community
Program, Immigrant and Refugee Program, and with the
Shelter’s Children’s Program volunteers received over 131
hours of training and workshops in 2014, and gave over
2,300 hours of service.
Volunteers make a positive impact on women and children
staying at Home Free. If you are interested in volunteering,
please contact Kari Hitchcock [email protected] or at
763-559-9008.
Thank You!
