WOW, it’s almost time for Conference. Wichita SWE
has had a terrific start to the year, exciting and fun
meetings, award winners, membership growth and a lot
of local exposure. Let’s keep that energy and momentum
up!
Of course we are all worried about the current situation
with the financial world. I expect to see some evidence
of that at Conference. In times like this, it is even more
important for us to be strong together. Remember that
you have a network out there to help you when things are
looking bleak. SWE is a place where people understand
and help each other.
There are a number of things happening in the next
couple months that will keep your spirits up. The
Fashion Party on October 25, our post-conference
meeting on November 13, the first EXPO planning
meeting of the year November 15, the Holiday Tea on
December 6 and DON’T forget the Holiday Tree! There
is nothing like tree decorating to boost your spirits.

I hope that all of you will be able to join us for one or
more of these events. There is always more than just the
event. It is the friendship and support we all get from
being together.

Congratulations to Angela
Schroeder and Allison Terry – the
Wichita Section Nominees for the
“New Faces of Engineering Award!”
Angela
Allison
All five candidates were outstanding: Kim Burton (Cessna), Angela Graham (Cessna),
Angela Schroeder (Cessna), Allison Terry (Boeing), and Rachel Woods (Spirit
Aerosystems). Wichita is very fortunate to have a pool of strong new engineers. They
will be recognized at the Holiday Fashion Show on Saturday October 25, 2008.
Thank you all for you nominations and votes. And a big thanks to
Kate Van Dellen for making this happen.
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) recently named Kate Van Dellen, a recent
Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo University graduate as one of its Outstanding Collegiate
Members for the 2007 fiscal year.
“There are so many wonderfully qualified women who graduate
in engineering each year and receiving this award was an honor,”
said Kate, “It’s always comforting to know that people around
you appreciate your work.”
SWE’s award recognizes six individual collegiate members each
year who enhance the engineering profession through
contributions to industry, education and the community. Winners
are selected based on their participation in their school’s SWE
chapter, other engineering organizations, campus and community
activities and academic standing.
Kate will receive her award at the Celebrate SWE Awards
Banquet in Baltimore, Md., on Nov. 8.

Out and About
Over 65 people signed up for the SWE event with Dondi
Scumaci on September 30th. The event was a lot of fun and
Dondi gave an excellent presentation on her book Designed for
Success. Dondi, an international speaker, author, and an
expert in professional and personal development, gave her
typical high energy performance. Dondi used stories and
personal experience to make key points in the book.
Specifically, Dondi talked about empowering ourselves to be successful. A few of her
“public service announcements” included:
• Have a mentor and be a mentor
• Have a 5 year career plan at all times
• Women need to market themselves
• Women must learn to negotiate; avoid the flinch!
• Go get feedback; don’t wait for a yearly review
• There is no such thing as job security; your security comes from the value that you deliver
Increase Your Value to Create Opportunity
In her book, Dondi shows this with her value pyramid. A person starts their career completing assigned
tasks and not adding much additional value. As a person takes initiative and adds value, they move up
the value pyramid. The higher you go up, the more value you add to the company and the more secure
you become in your job and yourself.
