Senioritis
Story by Dusty Dhuyvetter
Editor
A month or two ago the flu and
many other illnesses hit RCHS and
while this was unpleasant, a much
more serious epidemic has come to
my attention. Senioritis has wiped
out nearly 74.7% of the seniors
in this school; and by wiped out
I mean turned them into hardlymotivated zombies that live from
weekend to weekend and break
to break. Now I have the right to
observe this because I somehow
have been spared by this outbreak
and am just as eager to learn as
ever, the fact that I am writing this
in literally the last few minutes
before it needs to be sent out and
printed was just a fluke. But either
way, maybe if I put some of my
observations on paper it will be
easier to understand.
I will begin with how I believe
that this notorious “senioritis”
starts. Towards the first part of the
third quarter, maybe even earlier for
some, many seniors start choosing
where they will go to college and
send out applications. When these
applications get back with an
“accepted” note attached to them it
appears that you are already good to
go and high school begins to seem
less important. That is when the
seed is planted.
After high school seems to be
more important. Many of us will
begin responding to it with a more
carefree, and at times, rebellious
attitude. Do not hold that against
us, try to remember how we were
for the first 75-80% of high school.
to write what others may take a
chance at reading, I’m going to go
ahead and put down some tips for
lessening the effects.
worrying and it is pointless. I mean
call me too laid back but things will
work themselves out...just try to
think of the glass half full.
Uno: Do a spring sport or activity. If
you have something to set goals for
other than school it will give you a
reason to
keep your
focus and
some drive.
(You will
also miss
a lot of
school to go
to sporting
events,
that’s the
main thing).
But anyway, when these things start
to happen the ball has officially
begun to roll. Seniors will be having
more of the “why are we even
here?” thoughts and will be saying
things like “ughhhh I can’t wait for
summer” at least twice a day.
Now obviously as I am a senior
myself (and okay I admit it, one
with a severe case of the disease) I
can’t really tell others how to avoid
it. But because I have the power
Dos: Don’t overwork yourself.
I mean obviously grades are
important but you can keep them
up without being crazy about it.
Give yourself breaks to just kick
back and then hit the books when
necessary.
Cuatro: Mostly just take time to
think about how good we actually
have it, senioritis isn’t even a
problem compared to some things.
When you use that frame of mind
it is hard to even remember what
you had to complain about in the
first place. (Of course we could take
that one step further and not just use
those less fortunate as something to
make us feel better about ourselves,
and do something more helpful. But
that is a completely different matter
and I don’t want to start preaching).
So there are my tips, take them
or leave them, I won’t be offended.
Just thought I would try to explain
to anyone wanting to know why the
seniors might be more tense than
usual. So underclassmen just wait,
I didn’t know if it would happen to
me but it definitely does, senioritis
isn’t a myth. Seniors keep on going
because we’ve got spring break and
only 43 school days until summer,
and parents just try to bear whatever
your seniors throw at you in the
times of this epidemic.
Tres: Worrying is like a rocking
chair, it gives you something to do
but you don’t get anywhere. I know
people that spend too much time
How To Keep Your Things Safe
Story by Erin Cammel
Writer
Within the past month, two teachers’
laptops, an iPod, and close to $300 have
been stolen. It is unknown exactly how
much has been stolen over the year, but it is
way more than should be in a school with
less than 300 people.
This problem needs to stop, but it all
comes down to all of you. You are the ones
that need to lock your things up. If the ones
stealing won’t quit, then you need to take
things into your own hands. Here are a few
ways to insure your things are safe.
First, lock your lockers. Only you
and the P.E. teacher have the combination
to your lock. If you put your purse in your
locker then there is no way that your things
can be taken. Don’t leave your things out
on the bench; your valuables won’t be there
when you get back.

during Body Conditioning class. This is an ongoing problem
at Riley County this year. photo by Erin Cammel
Second, Leave valuable things in your
car and keep it locked. If you bring money to
school, take it out before you come in the building. Don’t leave it in the open where everyone
can see it. Put it in the glove compartment or
somewhere safe.
Third, one way to ensure your iPod won’t
be taken is to engrave your name it. The chances
of it being taken are slimmer because the person
stealing won’t want it identified. It is easy and
cheap, and could be the difference between “I
have one” and “I used to have one.”
I hope these tips help everyone. These will
only do good if you follow through with them.
There are so many things you can do.
Taking the right precautions will ensure
that your things will be safe. Together we can
beat this, but it’s going to be up to you. Are you
willing to do what it takes to keep your things
safe?

Last year didn’t turn out the way everyone
had imagined, so with the season motto of
“Unfinished Business” in mind, the 20072008 RCHS Lady Falcon basketball team
set their sights on the prize and never looked
back. Although it took an overtime win in the
substate finals to make it to state, they blew
away the competition in Hutchinson to win
their second title in four years. Finishing the
season a perfect 27-0, they achieved a feat
even the greatest teams sometimes can’t. They
achieved perfection.

Showing poise and passion, the Falcons
proved experience pays off against the firsttime state qualifying Chargers in the second
round, 55-36. The Falcons, including senior

toughness to defeat this fiesty team.

State Semifinals
Keeping the momentum swinging
in their favor, the Falcons next
defeated MEL-foe the Silver Lake
Eagles 44-36, completing a threegame season sweep. Alhtough
it was a closer game than in the
first round, the Falcons, inlcuding
junior Kylie Rothlisberger, used
tenacious defense to pull out the
win.
RCHS vs Silver Lake
Substate Semifinals
In a dominating performance, the
Falcons completed their perfect
season by defeating the Cimarron
Bluejays 46-30. Like many
games this season, the Falcon
insde game, including junior
Beth Husted, proved to be a key
factor in the game, as they kept
the talented Bluejay forwards
in check while putting on an
offensive show of their own.

In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Falcons
earned their way to state by defeating the league rival
Mustangs in overtime, 32-30. Senior Elice Frey was fouled
and sank both freethrows in the final seconds to send the
game into OT. In the extra period, junior Becca Tittel drained
a jumper from just inside the arc with less than 15 seconds
remaining, and the Falcon defense held the Mustangs to
keep their dream season alive and book a trip to the state
tournament in Hutchinson.

Needing a solid win to regaain their
confidence, the Falcons came out and took
care of business in the first round, defeating
the Tigers 51-20. Highlights of the game
included a sizzling performance by senior
Kaite Henry, who made seven three-point
shots for 21 points, and the amazing team
defense who held the Tigers to just four points
in the entire first half.

State Quarterfinals
The Falcons began post-season
play with a 71-25 romp of the Lady

game was senior Tiffany Bulk, who
dominated inside the paint on both
offense and defense.

RC SPRING BREAK!!!
Page by Solomon Consuegra
Senior Kyle Hammel is taking a ski trip to Colorado and is bringing along all his buddies, Tyler
Nelssen, Derek Glenn, Jase Hartenbower, Joel Eastes, Andrew Garver,, Dusty Dhuyvetter, AJ
Knudson, and Nathan Jones.
Junior English teacher Mrs. Steiner and her husband are going on a 3-day spa at Elms
Resort in Excelior Springs.
Junior Kylie Rothlisberger is taking a Mission Trip to Oklahoma City for the
University Christian Church.
Freshman William Seaton is driving down to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the
NCAA Big 12 Tournament.
The new pop/rock sensation “Farewell To False Love” is recording this spring
break for the first time. The band consists of juniors Skyler Schlageck Brandon
Stewart, sophomores Andy and Alan Bell, and senior Kenny Greeley.
Fun Tips For Break
Although many students are taking trips and leaving town for spring break, if
you’re stuck at home, there are still things you can do to have fun.
1.
The first thing you can do is check and see
if any of the town swimming pools are open,
if not, then call up your friends and see who
has a pool of their own because you have to
enjoy the nice weather ahead.
3.
2.
The second thing you could is if there
is a sport you are looking forward to
participating in this spring, then break
is a perfect time to touch up on it.
Another big excitement about spring
is the new style of clothing to prepare
for the summer. So bring your family
and friends and a significant amount
of money and start off your shooping
during spring break.

Popular Styles
* Popular colors are light pinks and blues also neon green,
fuchsia, orange, other pinks, turquiose, royal blue and sea
breeze, a light blue.
* Some multi-colored gowns will have a layer of one color
over the top of another. For example, pink over a chocolate
brown. These are called Creamsicle.
* Tight fitting is still popular but people will always love the
Ball Gown style. Younger people have more of a tendency to
go for the ball gown, where the seniors are doing the more
fun, slimmer, glamorous gowns.
* “Poofy” ball gowns with layers of tulle on the bottom are
popular.
* “Princess” gowns with lots of layers of tulle are also
popular.
* Another trend is the “pull-up” skirt where the skirt is
gathered up all around. (as shown)
* Mermaid-style dresses with plenty of beading are also
popular.

Skin Routine
It’s important to start early with a skin routine to
make sure your skin is flawless on prom night.
Here are some things to try:
* Exfoliate with a mild scrub. Do this at
least once a week to brush away the dead skin
cells on your face leaving it silky smooth.
* Use a moisturizing lotion that contains
sunscreen. This will make sure you don’t get
any sun damage.
* Drink lots of water! Drink at least eight
glasses a day to clean the body of harmful
toxins.
* For the rest of your skin. Use a salt scrub
a few times a week to get rid of other dead skin
cells around your elbows, knees, and feet. Use
and loofah and scrub, scrub, scrub! Make sure
you remember to put lotion on afterward to
make skin even softer.
* Keep your lips soft by using chapstick
24/7. Also, don’t lick your lips. This gets rid of
the natural oils and dries your lips causing them
to crack.
