Everything You Need to Know to Use Your Personal Digital Certificate at the Health Science Center Browsers When properly used, personal digital certificates allow the user to be definitively identified as the sender of an e-mail, as the final authority on a word processing document or spreadsheet, or as the signer of a PDF (Portable Document Format) file. This non-repudiation, especially for PDF files, is frequently used as a suitable substitute for a hand-written signature. In fact, digitally signing PDF files is the preferred format for distribution of certain documents at the Health Science Center. Using your certificate with your Outlook 2010 e-mail Using your certificate with Adobe Reader XI Using your certificate with Microsoft Word 2010 Using your certificate with Microsoft Excel 2010 In the instructions, names found on windows, panes on windows, or buttons will be presented in Arial bold italics. This will help you navigate and give you something to look for on the screen. Installl your dig gital certtificate in n your brrowser Internet Explorer. Because of the t tight inteegration of thhe Microsofft products, yyou must impport net Explorer (even if youu do not use Internet Expplorer as youur your digiital certificatte into Intern default browser) befo ore you use the t digital ceertificate in yyour Microssoft Office products. Thhese instructio ons cover thee supported versions v of Internet I Expplorer, versioons 9 throughh 11. There may be some variations beetween versiions, but thee window andd button nam mes will be tthe same. To install thee digital certtificate in In nternet Explo orer: 1. Open n Internet Ex xplorer. k on “Tools s” on the toolbar … 2. Click … and seelect “Intern net Option ns”. If the too olbar is not visible, v click the “gear” in i the upper--right-hand ccorner … … and seelect “Intern net Option ns”. 3. Selecct the “Conttent” tab. 4. Click k the “Certifficates” bu utton. 5. Selecct the “Pers sonal” tab an nd click the “Import … ” button. 6. In thee “Certifica ate Import Wizard” window, clickk the “Next”” button to start the wizaard. 7. Click k the “Brow wse…” butto on. 8. Go to o the location n where you u stored yourr digital certiificate and m make sure thee button nexxt to “File e name:” sh hows “Pers sonal Inform mation Exc change (*.p pfx;*.p12)”” is selected. 9. Selecct the filenam me you saved d the certificcate as and cclick the “Op pen” buttonn. 10. Ensurre the filenam me is correcct and click the t “Next” bbutton in thee “Certifica ate Import Wiza ard” window w. 11. Enterr the PIN or password yo ou used to do ownload thee certificate iin the “Pass sword:” texxt box, and ensure the t second an nd third checck boxes aree selected, thhen click thee “Next” buttton. 12. Makee sure the bu utton next to “Place all certificate es in the fo ollowing sttore” is selected and “Personal” “ ” is selected for the “Cerrtificate sto ore:” windoow. Click thhe “Next” button. 13. In thee window “C Completing g the Certiificate Impo ort Wizard d”, verify youur informatiion and click c the “Fin nish” butto on. 14. You will w get a no otification wiindow if all steps have bbeen perform med properlyy. Click the “OK K” button. 15. Yourr certificate should s now be b in the “C Certificates ” window unnder the “Pe ersonal” taab. Click k the “Close e” button to close the “C Certificates s” window. 16. Click k the “OK” button b to clo ose the “Inte ernet Optio ons” window w. Your diggital certificaate is now part p of Intern net Explorerr. Firefox. If you use Firefox F as yo our default browser, b youu can install tthe digital ceertificate intto Firefox even e though you’ve instaalled it in Intternet Explorer. These iinstructions aare for Fireffox 36. To in nstall the dig gital certificaate in Firefox x: 1. Open n Firefox. 2. Click k “Tools” on the toolbarr in the uppeer-left-hand corner. 3. In thee pulldown menu, m click “Options”. 4. In thee “Options s” window, click the “Ce ertificates”” tab. 5. In thee “Certifica ates” pane, click the “V View Certifi ficates” buttton. 6. In thee “Certifica ate Manage er” window, click the “IImport…” bbutton. 7. When n the “Certiificate File to Import” ” window apppears, go too the locationn where you stored d your digitaal certificate and ensure the file typee pulldown m menu has “P PKCS12 Filles (*.p1 12;*.pfx)” seelected. 8. Selecct your digitaal certificate file and clicck the “Ope en” button. 9. When n the “Pass sword Entrry Dialog” window w apppears, enter thhe PIN/password you ussed when n downloadin ng your digittal certificate and click tthe “OK” buutton. 10. An “A Alert” wind dow will app pear showing g the certificcate has beenn successfullly installed. Click k the “OK” button. b 11. Yourr digital certiificate will now n appear in the “Yourr Certificattes” tab of the “Certific cate Manager” wind dow. Click th he “OK” bu utton. 12. Click k the “OK” button b to clo ose the “Opttions” winddow. Yourr certificate is now installled in Firefo ox.
