The Sixth Annual Stories of the Stitch
AT MATTHEWS LIVING HISTORY FARM MUSEUM
On Saturday, September 11th, the hills surrounding
Matthews Living History Farm Museum told stories
of life on the farm in the early 1900s. Under grey
skies, over 40 quilts, wall hangings and other
quilted items were displayed and prizes were
awarded in eight categories: hand-pieced/quilted,
machine-pieced/hand-quilted, machine pieced/
quilted, appliquéd, youth (quilters under age 20),
other (arts, miniature,
pillow, clothing, etc.),
people’s choice and best story.
This year’s winners were: Gaye Pugh (best story & people’s choice),
Vera Young (hand pieced/quilted and other), Judy Poindexter
(machine pieced hand quilted and appliquéd),
Taylor Sawyer (youth) and Lola Bryant (machine pieced/quilted).
Matthews Living History Farm Museum is a
21 acre working farm, circa 1900. The Farm
Museum sponsors three seasonal events each year: Spring, Summer
and Fall. The activities demonstrated at the farm during each event
represent what was common practice in that season here in Grayson
County around 1900. The Spring focuses on setting the garden and plowing the fields with
draft horse teams, or sometimes oxen teams. In Summer,
the garden is in full maturity as are the hay fields. Hay is
made, once again utilizing draft teams, and sample goodies
from the garden. The Fall activities focus on repairs and
putting things by as well as STORIES OF THE STITCH. Each
event features a variety of local artisans demonstrating their
crafts and offering their wares for sale, as well as toe tapping
local music and good victuals. The barns and livestock are
always on view during May through September week day
hours, as are the spring house and workshop.
Keep your September 2011 calendar open for the Seventh Annual STORIES OF THE STITCH.
More information regarding dates, times and quilt entries will be available in July 2011.
