CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE
TO GRADUANDS
Today’s ceremony marks the culmination of
years of research and study. ANU owes much
to the intellectual and cultural contribution of our
student body. In return, we work to build on our
high standards in research and education. ANU
was created as part of a great nation building
exercise. That mandate continues and you share
a vital part in it.
I hope that your time with us has been enriching. It will certainly shape
your future.
Receiving your testamur is a significant achievement in its own right. It is also an
important milestone. Some of you will decide to pursue further study; some of
you will seek challenges outside the University environment.
The skills you have developed to sort what is material from what isn’t, of
separating fact from fiction, of subjecting argument to close and rigorous
analysis, and solving problems logically and creatively will stand you in good
stead in whatever path you follow. These attributes, which also equip you to be
good citizens, are pivotal to the good health of our democratic nation. We are
confident that you will abide by the highest standards of professional and ethical
conduct and to be a continuing contributor to community service throughout the
course of your lives.
For the University, today is not just about bidding farewell to our latest group of
outstanding students–it’s also about welcoming you to a new phase of life in the
ANU community, as part of our international family of alumni.
Enjoy this occasion and the celebrations with friends and loved ones. Behind
every degree lies a tale of individual effort, sacrifice and achievement.
I offer my heartiest congratulations to all of you.

The Australian National University
Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC
WELCOME FROM
THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
Our founders had high expectations of us.
They planned for a university which would
make all Australians proud and improve
our understanding of our country and
our neighbours.
More than 69 years later, we still have these aspirations in mind. Our global reputation is such that we can say that we have done what
was, and is, expected of us. What you do as graduates will contribute to
this legacy.
This ceremony celebrates your efforts as well as those of the friends, family
and ANU staff who have supported you.
Your achievement is like no other; you have been scrutinised by the best,
and have been admitted, by them, to their community. For this, you should
be extremely proud.
Professor Ian Young AO
I wish you well in your future endeavours–whatever it is you choose to do,
wherever you choose to do it. Conferring of Awards December 2015

THE UNIVERSITY
Since the University’s inception,
ANU academics have taken their
ideas to the world, and the world’s
best have come here to collaborate
with internationally renowned
colleagues. ANU is Australia’s most
research-intensive university and is
consistently ranked among the best
universities in the world.
ANU collaborates closely with other research organisations,
national institutions and Federal, State and Territory
governments. Generations of ANU scholars, teachers and
graduates have shaped government policy and public
debate, making a very real contribution to the economic,
cultural and social prosperity of the nation.
ANU is the only Australian member of the International
Alliance of Research Universities (IARU)–a strategic
partnership between the world’s best education and
research institutions. The Alliance shares a focus on
research-led teaching, a commitment to educating
future leaders and tackling some of the century’s
biggest challenges.
ANU provides an environment in which learning and
research sit side-by-side. The University’s academic profile
is dictated by what we research, and we teach what
we research.
ANU graduates go on to take up leadership positions in
government, industry, research and academia at home
and abroad.
As Australia’s national university and Australia’s
finest university, ANU sets the standard in research,
education and public policy, on issues of national and
international importance.

The Australian National University
The culture of ANU
The distinguishing culture of ANU is one where the notion
of discovery pervades all that we do. For all staff, it is the
discovery of new and better ways to research, to educate
and to support ANU students and scholars. For academic
staff, it is the discovery of new knowledge and new
insights, and the creative use of these innovations in further
research and education. For students, it is the discovery of
new understanding, in breadth and in depth, in their fields
of interest.
Reconciliation at ANU
The University has made a formal commitment to
reconciliation with Indigenous Australians; launching in July
2009 one of the first Reconciliation Action Plans within the
higher education sector. The Plan and its implementation
provide a whole-of-institution approach to enhancing
broad engagement with Indigenous education, research,
employment and culture.
The ANU Reconciliation Action Plan is testament to the
University’s conviction that it must contribute to righting the
wrongs of the past. ANU knows that the future has to be
founded on relationships of mutual respect and meaningful
partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous
Australians—a future where Indigenous culture, connection
to country, and world views are treated with respect.
The University’s vision for reconciliation is to be a place
of learning that respects Indigenous culture and diversity:
a place where Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
come together to engage with their chosen discipline,
contextualised by an understanding of our shared
history. ANU aims to make an important contribution to
reconciliation by furthering scholarly learning, research and
public knowledge of Indigenous issues.
ANU provides a supportive learning environment where
Indigenous Australians can realise their potential and
achieve their aspirations. It aims to make a significant
contribution to improving higher education and employment
outcomes for Indigenous Australians. The University
community has strong and mutually beneficial partnerships
with local, national and, indeed, international Indigenous
communities. These relationships provide for the sharing
of knowledge and ideas and the opportunity to listen and
learn from Indigenous Australians about the past, their
current circumstances and their vision for the future.

The Ceremony
Ceremonial objects
The Conferring of Awards ceremony begins with an
academic procession that honours graduating students,
as it moves from the back of Llewellyn Hall to the stage.
The silver mace, which is the symbol of the ViceChancellor’s authority, was presented to ANU by the
University of Oxford in 1950. It is a replica of the original
Oxford mace, made in gold by Benjamin Pyne, the
18th century goldsmith. The mace is carried before the
Vice-Chancellor by the Esquire Bedel. The larger end
of the mace is carried uppermost in the presence of
the Chancellor.
The procession is in two parts.
The first is led by two Deputy Marshals (carrying staves)
and they are followed by academic and professional staff
of the University.
The second part, the Chancellor’s Procession, is led by
the University Marshal and two Deputy Marshals. This
procession includes members of the University’s Council,
the Registrar, Deans and Directors of ANU Colleges,
Directors of Schools and Research Schools, the Chair of
the Emeritus Faculty, the University Librarian, the Master
of University House, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the
Pro Vice-Chancellors, Heads of Residential Colleges and
Halls of Residence, honorary graduands, special guests,
the graduating student speaker and the guest speaker.
The Esquire Bedel, carrying the silver mace, leads the
Vice-Chancellor, followed by the Pro-Chancellor and the
Chancellor. At the end of the ceremony, the Chancellor
leads the procession from the Hall.
Graduates are individually presented to the Chancellor
or Pro-Chancellor to receive a testamur that certifies the
award from which they have graduated. Testamur is a
Latin word which literally means ‘We certify’, and was
traditionally the first word written on the certificate.
Candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy and
higher doctorates are presented by the Deputy ViceChancellor (Research) or Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research
and Research Training) and will kneel before the Chancellor
or Pro-Chancellor to have a hood placed over their
shoulders. Presented by the Dean, Master and other
Graduate students are presented next, with Bachelor
graduates being last. The Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor
also presents University Medals to the graduates to whom
they have been awarded. If there is an honorary doctorate,
the candidate is presented by the Vice-Chancellor to the
Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor.
Presentation of graduates is followed by staff awards and
addresses by a graduating student and the Guest Speaker.
There is a musical interlude roughly halfway through
the ceremony. Finally, the Chancellor or Pro-Chancellor
closes the ceremony and the Academic Procession leaves
the Hall.
The Chancellor’s chair, kneeling stool, mace stand and
Marshals’ staves were designed and made by George
Ingham from the Wood Workshop in the Canberra School
of Art, now part of ANU. They feature the University arms,
pierced through a polished metal background and a
composite structure of timber components. The staves of
casuarina torulosa carried by the Marshal and two Deputy
Marshals are split at the top to form clips that hold polished
stainless steel disks which are pierced with a stylised image
of the University arms.
Ceremonial dress
Traditional academic dress is worn at The Australian
National University on ceremonial occasions and at formal
events in the halls and residential colleges. The wide range
of styles and colours of the academic dress worn by staff at
ANU reflects the international character of the University.
Academic dress has been influenced by the fashions of
everyday attire since the founding of the first European
universities in Bologna, Paris and Oxford. Today’s dress,
consisting of a gown, hood, cap or bonnet, arose out of the
lay costume of the early Middle Ages. As academics at the
early universities were mostly in religious orders, the garb
they wore became the traditional dress for academics.
ANU academic dress is based on the styles worn at Oxford,
Cambridge and the University of London. Different styles
of gowns and formation of hoods indicate the Degrees of
Bachelor, Master and Doctor. The colour of the hood for
Bachelor and Master degrees indicates the ANU Academic
College where the award was undertaken. Bachelor hoods
have a narrow band of colour; Master hoods are fully-lined
with colour. Both wear black trencher caps (also known as
mortarboards). ANU Doctors of Philosophy wear a black
gown faced with blue corded silk, a hood of blue corded
silk lined with the same silk, and a black velvet bonnet with
blue cord and tassel.

The Chancellor wears a gown of black damask-figured silk
trimmed with gold lace and a round black velvet bonnet
trimmed with gold lace with a gold cord and tassel. The
Pro-Chancellor’s gown and bonnet are similar to those of
the Chancellor but are trimmed with silver lace and the
gown does not have a train.
The Vice-Chancellor’s gown is made of black damask silk
trimmed with gold lace and a round black velvet bonnet
with a gold cord and tassel. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s
academic dress is identical to that of the Vice-Chancellor
except that it is trimmed with silver. Other senior staff wear
the academic dress for the highest degree they hold. The
University Marshal’s gown is blue and is faced with gold
corded silk and a bonnet trimmed with blue and gold.
Deputy Marshals wear similar gowns and bonnets to that of
the Marshal, but the gowns do not have collars or lining.
The Esquire Bedel, whose ancient ceremonial role is
to protect the Vice-Chancellor, wears a black gown of
damask-figured silk trimmed with gold and a black bonnet
trimmed with gold, and carries the University Mace.
Professors in the University and special guests who do not
have their own academic dress wear a black gown with
silver facings and bell-shaped silver sleeves and a black
bonnet. University Council members other than graduates
wear a black Master’s gown with silver facings embroidered
with the University arms and a black bonnet. Academic staff
wear either their own academic dress or a black Master’s
gown with blue facings and a black bonnet. Professional
staff without their own academic dress wear a black
undergraduate gown with a black cap. If a person has more
than one degree, the dress of the senior degree is worn.

Student speaker
Alexia Fuller
Alexia is graduating today with a Bachelor of Arts and
Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies (Honours). She moved
from Sydney to Canberra to study with the ANU College
of Asia and the Pacific, expecting that a major in Japanese
would be the final milestone in her Asia-Pacific education.
Instead, she discovered it was only the start. The breadth
and diversity of the University’s Asia-Pacific Studies
program allowed Alexia to begin studying Northeast Asia,
undertaking study in Tokyo, Japan and Tianjin, China, but
also to discover new interests along the way. After a chance
encounter she enrolled in several Pacific Studies courses,
including the Pacific Islands Field School in Honolulu,
Hawai’i. Alexia then completed an internship in Suva, Fiji
and Honours in Pacific Studies, which involved researching
women in Canberra’s Indo-Fijian diaspora. In addition to
formal study with the College, she was a member of the
Asia-Pacific Week Committee in 2015 and a CAP Student
Ambassador for three years.
In the early 2000s he recognised a need for smart forms
and automated document generation software leading him
to invent Infiniti, a software platform enabling companies to
digitalise and streamline their processes.
His company, Intelledox has expanded to over 150
customer sites across four continents, recently acquiring
Fortune 500, government and financial services clients from
Singapore and the US.
Student speaker
Thomas Ratcliff
Thomas is graduating today with a Doctor of Philosophy
from the Research School of Engineering, having
completed his post-graduate study in the solar energy
research group. During his candidature, Thomas worked
with the high efficiency silicon solar cell research team. His research topic focussed on simplifying the fabrication
of high efficiency solar cells using advanced techniques,
specifically on implantation, which is an active research
topic in industry and academia. A highlight of his research
was the fabrication of a record efficiency cell using ion
implantation. Prior to studying for his PhD, Thomas
also completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree at
ANU, and since submitting his thesis has continued in
the photovoltaics research group as a post-doctoral
research fellow.

ANU Medical School Oath
At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due;
I will practise my profession with conscience and dignity;
The health of my patient will be my first consideration;
I will respect the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;
I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honour and the noble traditions of the medical profession;
My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;
I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race,
sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;
I will maintain the utmost respect for human life;
I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;
I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page let every stage

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
