Cselle, M. Morstein, A. Lümkemann - PLATIT AG, Selzach, Schweiz What is innovation? Innovation is "creating something new" in unspecified terms of new ideas, inventions, and their economical implementation. T he most innovative sector at the moment is undoubtedly the IT industry. It is launching new products at a very rapid pace. Two companies, Apple and Google, whose company policies couldn't be more different, are currently battling for leadership in the sector [1]. "Innovation is when the customer opens his wallet [2]" - says Steve Jobs, the brilliant CEO of Apple. At his company, everything is directed according to his intentions: – The very often groundbreaking new products originate from his idea tank, which are then marketed in emotionally-charged campaigns. – Apple works according to an extreme hierarchy and strict, central guidelines and controls. – The customer is presented with a selfcontained product range, in which he can move extremely reliably and confidently after just a brief familiarization period. – An absolute policy of high pricing for hardware and software is pursued for each update to the new version. Money is demanded even from the developers in order to be allowed to work on the Apple platform. The prodigies, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, give their engineers and users extremely generous "freedom to work": – The employees are always strongly encouraged to search for new ideas and not to be afraid to take risks. – The engineers define their own tasks partly by themselves and should act project-oriented with a great deal of self-supervision and self-responsibility. – The products are Open Source so that they can be transported onto various platforms. (According to the motto: Figure 1: Influence of Important Material Components on Features of PVD Coatings. Figure 0: Calo and EDX-map of a TripleCoating3® (nACoX3®). Everybody knows what's best for themselves.) – All services and programs are free of charge so that the products can be distributed and spread rapidly. The situation is very similar on the tool-coatings' market. The market leaders focusing on job coating services disclose hardly any information about the coatings: – They remain silent regarding composition and coating structures. + or – changes in comparison to the coating in the row over + means mainly positive change in the user's point of view – means mainly negative change in user's point of view X is probably around 65% 2 ● Werkzeug Technik 115 ● 15 September 2010 COATING Figure 2: Stoichiometry of TripleCoatings3® and their Deposition Steps in the S 311. – The physical properties are only described in terms of standard values. – When acquiring a coating plant, • the coating recipes are frozen and cannot be changed by the user, • whereby the recipes represent a significant cost item. The TripleCoatings 3® are in strong contrast to this: – The compositions and stoichiometry (coating structure) are disclosed and the effects of the individual "components and doping elements" described in detail (figure 1). – The users receive measured values and diagrams on the coatings they are using. – The coating recipes (Open Source) can be changed by the users (According to the motto: Everyone knows what's best for themselves). – The standard recipes of the Nanocomposite-TripleCoatings 3® (nACo 3® and nACRo3®) are "core components" of the PLATIT plants, and are thus free of charge for the users. 1.What are TripleCoatings3® ? TripleCoatings 3® represent the very pinnacle of high-performance coatings of PVD technology. They are combinations of conventional and Nanocomposite coatings [3] - [6]: – The coatings are always started with an adhesive layer that is usually deposited from non-alloyed targets (Ti Figure 3:The TripleCoatings3® - Coating Family (State August/2010). 3 ● Werkzeug Technik 115 ● 15 September 2010
