Abb. 2:pH-Wert der Haut bei Mensch und Tier, Quelle: Matousek und Campbell 2002 Dr. med. vet. Scherrer, Bogar AG. „The structure of a dog’s skin is largely comparable with the structure of a human’s, and yet there are important differences. The dog’s skin contains practically no sweat glands, which means that dogs cannot sweat, but regulate their heat balance through “heckles”. Additional sweat glands are restricted to the paws. These primarily serve the purpose of territory marking.” Animal/Human Human pH value of the skin 4.8 Guinea pig 5.5 Horse 6.3 Pig 6.3 Cat 6.4 Dog 7.4 Goat 8.1 The hair and coat structure in dogs A dog’s coat basically consists of a topcoat and an undercoat (downy hair). The thicker and coarser topcoat protects against dirt and moisture, while the downy hair mainly serves to regulate heat. The particular characteristics differ greatly depending on the breed. We can divide our dogs into 3 main groups, with each exhibiting its own peculiarities and special requirements: Short hair has a very short lifespan of ca. 6 - 12 weeks, sheds and is replaced with new hair . Eg. Boxers, Viszlas, Dobermans Fig. 1: Schematic diagram (cross-section) of the skin layers in a dog, with sebaceous glands, vessels, nerves and hair follicles. Besides the lack of sweat glands, one other significant difference as compared to human skin lies in the pHvalue. Different mammals also have different pH-values (cp. fig. 2). The average pH-value of a dog’s skin ist 7.5, which is in 2. Wiry hair/rough coat Particularly thick undercoat beneath the top hair. In spring and autumn, these animals go through a coat-shedding period lasting several weeks. Eg. The anatomical differences between individual dog breeds are significant - and the same diversity applies to skin and coats. For example, if you were to compare a Newfoundlander with a Chihuahua, the differences soon become apparent. The Newfoundlander: large with a relatively thick skin, a long topcoat and a dense undercoat. The Chihuahua: small with rather thin and sensitive skin, as well as a fine topcoat and almost no undercoat. bogacare® EAR CLEANER Alchemilla Why individual care products for dogs?
