On a clear day, both downtown Tampa and downtown St. Petersburg are beautifully visible, along with an assortment of wildlife ranging from birds to dolphins. The Apollo Beach Nature Park is a 63-acre preserve located at the north end of Surfside Blvd. It is maintained by both Hillsborough County and the Apollo Beach Beautification Committee. Although Apollo Beach is known as a waterfront community, the nature park is the only waterfront access open to the public. During the winter months, fishing in the area is said to be excellent due to the warm water flow from the nearby Big Bend power plant. Of course, simply enjoying a beautiful December day in the quiet park from a bench with a view is priceless. Brandon Regional Library parking lot undergoes construction The front part of the parking lot of the Brandon Regional Library, located in the Sandy Rodriguez Center at 619 Vonderburg Dr. (just west of Parsons Avenue), will undergo major improvements beginning in January 2013. These improvements will provide the following benefits to library customers: u The main entry drive will be re-graded, lowering the incline, to improve access and safety. u Six new parking spaces will be added in front of the library. u The front portion of the lot will be re-striped and new traffic control signs will be installed to improve traffic flow and safety. u Concrete steps at Vonderburg Drive will be eliminated and pedestrians will be directed toward the existing ADA accessible ramp to provide a safer foot path through the parking lot. u An additional, right-turn only, exit onto Vonderburg Drive will be created to improve egress and traffic flow. The library will maintain its regular hours of operation throughout construction: Monday – Wednesday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and Sunday 12:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. The parking lot will remain accessible throughout construction, although traffic patterns will be redirected at times, and some parking spaces at the front of the building may be restricted for safety. Additional public parking for library users is available in the unpaved lot in Clayton Park, adjacent to the ball field at the end of Bowing Oak Drive. Library patrons are advised not to park in the lots of neighboring businesses, who may enforce towing policies. Access to drive-up book drops will be limited during construction, but walk-up access will be available at all times. Strange but True by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved American film star Katharine Hepburn who made the following sage observation: “Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get, only with what you are expecting to give -- which is everything.” • You might be surprised to learn that one out of every 18 people has a third nipple. • The epic 1939 film “Gone With the Wind” was awarded 10 Academy Awards and is a beloved classic to this day. Given the astounding success of the movie, it’s shocking that one of the stars, Vivien Leigh, was paid only $15,000 for her role as Scarlett O’Hara. • The world’s smallest spider is about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. • You may not realize it, but not all “light” beers have fewer calories than brews without that label. A beer simply has to be lighter in color to be called “light.” • The African ostrich lays an egg that weighs a whopping 30 pounds. It’s so sturdy that a grown man can stand on it without causing it any harm. • When the Titanic sank in 1912, many passengers perished in the frigid waters because no ship came to their aid until the Carpathia arrived more than two hours after the disaster. However, there was another ship nearby as the liner sank: a freighter, the California, was only 10 miles away. The crew even saw emergency flares fired from the liner, but they thought it was part of a celebration rather than a signal of distress. • Although a normal human infant is born with 350 bones, the normal human adult has only 206 bones. *** Thought for the Day: “I’m an excellent housekeeper.
