BINGHAM COMPANY
LA JOLIE RONDE
WINS PRESTIGIOUS
INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S AWARD
For the second year running, the International Children’s Awards 'What’s On 4 Juniors
2015’ have crowned Bingham-based La Jolie
Ronde Languages for Children the 'Best National
Activity for 5-12 year olds’. "It really is such a positive time for languages at
the moment.
"The government continues to seen their
importance, making languages a compulsory part
of the primary and secondary school timetable.”
La Jolie Ronde has been at the forefront of
primary languages since 1983.
They are leading provider of French and Spanish
language learning, for children, through extracurricular language classes as well as supplying
language resources to primary schools across the
United Kingdom, Ireland and overseas.
Earlier in the year, the award programme
asked parents and children from across the
UK to nominate their favourite after-school and
weekend activities. La Jolie Ronde offers both French and Spanish
classes to nursery and primary-aged children in
the area.
Cub Scouts from the 1st Bingham Gemini Pack
have been learning about air activities with
help from teenagers of the Air Training Corps.
However, this might be one of the last activities
that the cub scouts enjoy as the Gemini Pack
faces closure unless they can recruit extra
leaders. Recently, a team from 209 (West
Bridgford) Squadron ATC helped deliver the Air
Activities badge in a pre-planned collaboration.
The air cadets visited the cubs at Carnarvon
School in Bingham to deliver a slideshow about
the history of flight, basic principles of flight and
aviation facts. The cubs visited the air cadets at
their newly-opened £1 million headquarters on
Wilford Lane, West Bridgford.
They now urgently require more regular adult
help. It does not necessarily have to be every
week if the pack has enough volunteer leaders to
help share the running of the pack. If you would
like to help, please email cub scout leader, Adrian
Telford via 1stbinghamscouts.org.uk.
"This category is always a tough one as there
are so many fantastic and extremely popular
activities on offer for our children today. "Knowing that it's the parents and children who
have voted for us makes winning this award even
more special. EW
BINGHAM CUB SCOUT
PACK FACES CLOSURE
A recent cub meeting has already been
cancelled as one of the two remaining leaders
were unavailable because work commitments.
In the last three months, the pack has lost
two adult leaders through ill-health and family
commitments.
Marketing Manager for La Jolie Ronde, Mala
Henry, told The Local News: "We are absolutely
delighted to win this award for the second year running. “If you like our quality you’ll love our price”
That’s our promise!

HELP EMMA WITH
HER GB DREAM
My name is Emma Redgate and I was diagnosed
with a life-threatening and incurable liver disease
when I was just a few weeks old - and have since
gone on to have two liver transplants.
I was diagnosed with biliary atresia; a disease
in which the bile ducts become progressively
blocked leading to irreversible liver damage.
I underwent a corrective operation but this proved
to be unsuccessful and specialists told my family
that the only hope was a liver transplant.
I was put on the transplant list and the desperate
wait for a donor organ began.
It was with great relief when in October 2001
at the age of 10 months, I received a liver
transplant.
However, the organ did not function as hoped
and as my condition deteriorated and I was once
again put on the transplant waiting list.
In July 2004, I underwent a second transplant
and since the operation I have progressed well,
although I will require medication for life to help
prevent me from rejecting my new liver.
I am now 14 years old and have been selected by
the World Transplant Games to represent Team
GB at this year’s games to be held in Argentina
during August.
The World Transplant Games are held every two
years and all participants have received a lifesaving organ transplant, whether it be heart, lung,
liver, kidney, pancreas or bone marrow.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to
represent Team GB in the swimming event. As
a junior team member I am required to have a
parental escort.
However, I also need to secure my own funding to
cover my training, kit, flight and accommodation
for myself and also for my parents.
In order to make this all possible, I would be
grateful for any contribution you could offer.
You can contribute by just searching for Emma
Redgate on the justgiving.com website.
As well as this event being a huge physical
sporting challenge, the games also promote the
benefits of organ transplantation and highlight the
need for organ donation.
Further information on the British and World
Transplant Games can be found online at
transplantsport.org.uk and wtgf.org. I thank you in
anticipation of your contribution.

THE ASHES COMES TO
RUSHCLIFFE NEXT MONTH
Ashes fever will grip Rushcliffe next month as
England and Australia go head to head in one of
the competitive and exciting rivalries in sport. The
two teams meet in the fourth Ashes Test from
Thursday 6th to Monday 10th August. Thousands
of fans will flock to Trent Bridge from all over the
world for yet another eagerly-anticipated Test
series against England's biggest rival.
An Ashes Test is worth millions to the local
economy. Hotels will be full and the no vacancy
signs will be on display, while bars, restaurants
and cafes will be bustling with people throughout
the Test match.
Trent Bridge hosted Ashes Tests in 2005 and
2013 with England winning on both occasions.
They beat the Aussies by three wickets 10 years
ago in a dramatic game, with Ashley Giles hitting
the winnings runs.
In 2013, England won another breathtaking
encounter - this time by 13 runs. The Notts pair
of Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann played their
part in a thrilling game.

HOSTS TOUR DE
NOTTINGHAM
More than 20 cyclists from the UK property scene
took on the 60-mile Tour de Nottingham and
found out more about the area as investment
potential. The riders joined around 20 local
cyclists from Notts firms – coming together to
do the ride through Nottingham and the Vale of
Belvoir. The Tour de Nottingham idea was the
brainchild of Nottingham City Council leader
Jon Collins - a keen cyclist who takes part in the
Cycles to Cannes race every year.
05
www
Councillor Collins said: “I was looking for a way
to encourage investors and developers to visit
Nottingham and find out more about the city as
a potential area to invest. Cycling is increasingly
a popular sport for so many, so the Tour de
Nottingham was created encouraging business
people to take part.”
The course started at Trent Bridge, travelling
through the city to the Vale of Belvoir towards
Belvoir Castle, out towards Newark and then
returning to Nottingham City Centre.
The Tour de Nottingham was sponsored
by Scape System Build, the construction,
procurement, design and transformation
specialists in Nottingham.
Other sponsors include construction firm Willmott
Dixon, PR and marketing agency Cartwright
Communications, and design agency RizkMcCay.
Ian Walker of Morgan Tucker, who took part
with colleague Phil Walker, said: “The Tour de
Nottingham is a fantastic experience where
you’re able to build relationships with other
businesses, all while working to benefit others.”
Companies travelling to the city centre to take
part in the Tour de Nottingham included Pegasus
Life, GVA, Symmetrys Limited, Arthur J Gallagher,
Vale Retail and Stirling Black Local Notts firms
taking part included Gleeds, Couch Perry Wilkes,
Carter Legrand Wealth Strategies, Cartwright
Communications, FHP, BSP Consulting, Morgan
Tucker, and Willmott Dixon.

COTGRAVE
REGENERATION
PROJECT IS
PROGRESSING WELL It’s a period of change for the residents of
Cotgrave with the regeneration of the area
already progressing well. Cotgrave is undergoing real change at the
moment with exciting projects going on; 450 new
homes are being built on the former colliery site
and there are excellent plans for the town centre
to be improved. Housing construction on the colliery site has
started, new roads and new homes are being
built and the show homes should be ready by the
end of July.
This is not the only change for the area though,
as the regeneration project includes the existing
precinct in the centre of Cotgrave - and there are
exciting plans for this also.
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
"Along with a new health centre that will be better
able to meet the needs of the local community,
this will also house the library, police and
Borough Council services.
"As with any major development project like this,
there have been some setbacks along the way.
The latest setback is that due to the national
scaling back of building new supermarkets, the
interest is no longer evident for the site. "Whilst this creates a challenge for all partners,
partners are now focussed on developing plans
that maximise the offer that the town centre
provides for residents and visitors."
To keep the local community informed, an event
is being planned to showcase some outline town
centre plans to the community.
This will take place from 2pm on Wednesday
23rd September and all day on Thursday 24th
September at Cotgrave Futures, Candleby Lane,
in Cotgrave.
Allen Graham from Rushcliffe Borough Council and chairman of Cotgrave Strategic Board - told
The Local News: "Whilst visibly there has been no
change to the precinct yet, there is lots of great
work going on behind the scenes.
COTGRAVE GOLF DAY
RAISES £10,000
A fantastic total of more than £10,000 has
been raised for the Nottingham-based
charity Education for the Children (EFTC) at a
golf day at the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country
Club. Golfers from Palmers of Trent Bridge and
HD Decisions of Nottingham were amongst the
teams participating.
"It was a fantastic day with lots of sunshine and
seven people beat the course professional," said
event organiser Boo Somers. "The funds will be
used to pay for an all-weather sports area at the
charity's school in Jocotenango, a desperately
impoverished area of Guatemala. The school,
opened in 2011 by EFTC, educates and feeds
580 children who would otherwise be begging on
the streets."
The winners of the golf tournament were Fraser
Brown Solicitors of Nottingham. Charity auction
prizes included a giant stilton cheese donated by
Colston Bassett Dairy and the golf holiday at the
prestigious Thracian Cliffs golf resort in Bulgaria.
The charity is now gearing up for its Annual Ball
to be held at the East Midlands Conference
Centre on 10th October. Tickets are now on sale,
see eftc.org.uk or phone 0115 958 4876.
"It is hoped that ultimately the regeneration of
the precinct will not only create an improved
shopping experience, it will also provide
employment opportunities for local people. "As with the housing, this will be in the
construction phases but also as new businesses
come into the area.
"There is real commitment from all major partners
to the regeneration project.
"Currently it is planned that this will include the
development of a new multi-service centre. 10x10 advert ART.pdf

KEYWORTH NATIVE
RAEGAN RECEIVES
PRESTIGIOUS
SCHOOL AWARD FOR
NEW YORK
Raegan Sealy, a Keyworth native, has received
a very special accolade, The New School
Fulbright Award.
This will enable Raegan to study at The
New School in New York City on one of the
most prestigious and selective scholarship
programmes operating worldwide. As a participant, Raegan has been selected to
study on the acclaimed MFA in Creative Writing
with a concentration in Poetry at The New School
for Public Engagement in New York City. 09
"New York still seems like some elaborate movie
set to me, not a real place. “I hope these two years' work will enable me
to practically research the role of poetry and
performance in society.
Long Acre Studios in Bingham hosted a
competition for local art groups, with the best
painting chosen by the general public.
"Then there's the potential, as a tool, for social
change, bringing people and communities
together, in institutional, civic and global terms. “I believe that art, lyrics and performance are the
human race's highest forms of expression.
"I really believe that this creativity can be
harnessed and developed to the aid of great,
universal advancement. “It’s a great honour to be a part of an organisation
like Fulbright, in which I know I have found
a family for life.
"I know I will form many great relationships and
be supported to reach my full potential.”
Raegan said: “Receiving a Fulbright scholarship
is truly a dream come true.
MICHAEL IS A WINNER
IN BINGHAM ART
COMPETITION
Michael O’Brien won with two of his paintings,
with both receiving the same amount of votes, so
fortunately there was no tie-breaker situation with
different contestants. The gallery also hosted a school competition
entitled ‘Waterloo’. The winner was eight-year-old
Joseph Hargreaves, who attends Colston Bassett
Independent School.
Bingham author Peter Youds, whose ninth book
‘A Battle Lost and Won' has just been published
to coincide with the bicentenary of Waterloo,
presented the prizes. He then gave a talk
entitled 'Balls, Belles and Bugles’ recounting the
famous battle. "Living and studying in New York as a writer and
performer is an aspiration I have held in my heart
since I discovered Bob Dylan aged 14.
“The New School is in Greenwich Village, which
means I can be playing in the same coffee shops
and jazz clubs that were graced by Dylan himself,
Joni Mitchell and Allen Ginsberg.
"It means I can walk the same streets as famous
names such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Sylvia
Plath and Billie Holiday.
10 x 5 BFORDS GARDEN:Layout 1 23/09/2014 14:59 Page 1
“I’m sure the whole experience is not going to
dawn on me until I step off the plane.

ACCOLADE FOR PAUL
When it launched in October last year,
Affinity Designer received Apple’s Editors
Choice endorsement and has since been
awarded Best App of 2014 runner-up, on top
of gaining five-star ratings from customers the
world over.
Paul Jarram of Keyworth-based Tuna Garage
has won the accolade of Best Technician at the
TerraClean awards.
The awards ceremony celebrated the progress
and success of the TerraClean brand.
But the Apple Design Award is a crowning
achievement and testament to the capabilities
of a local company with a vision to succeed in a
global market. Tony Brightman, head of the Affinity Development
team and recipient of the award on stage, said:
“Affinity Designer has been a labour of love for
our development team and to have all their hard
work rewarded in this way is fantastic." “This is such a proud moment for our company,”
said Ashley Hewson, managing director of
Serif. “The Affinity project is something we have
been working on tirelessly now for five years
and to receive such huge recognition from the
biggest company in the world for what we have
done is simply amazing.” The first-ever TerraClean awards was hosted
by Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards, who was special
guest presenter and entertained guests with
his experiences from competing for GB in the
Winter Olympics.
Paul told The Local News: “I’d like to thank
everybody that voted for me and customers and
friends of Tuna Garage. I have a passion for all
things automotive and its great to be recognised
for the work both myself and the business does
for Nottinghamshire motorists.”
The app uses custom-built rendering technology
that takes full advantage of Apple’s hardware
and core OS X frameworks, giving a level of
performance that has never been seen before in a
graphics application. ARC INTERIORS

RADCLIFFE PRESCHOOL PLAYGROUP
MARKS 50TH
BIRTHDAY
Radcliffe’s pre-school playgroup marked its 50th
birthday with a free community family fun day at
the British Legion Hall and Gardens.
It attracted over 300 people from the local
community, with a wonderful mix of current
playgroup staff, children, previous staff,
committee members and attendees.
Geraldine Mills, its original founder, opened the
event and she recounted tales of the early days at
the Radcliffe-on-Trent Boys Brigade Hall in 1965
where it all began.
The pre-school, which is now based within the
South Nottinghamshire Academy, still holds firm
to its voluntary committee-run roots and it is
manned by an 11-strong committee of parents
from the local area.
It is a registered not-for-profit charity and works
hard to provide affordable childcare for local
parents.
The last 50 years have seen it grow from a small
playgroup to a well-established pre-school
playgroup, operating from dedicated indoor
and outdoor facilities within the local secondary
school and employing 15 staff.
With the current rebuild of the school under way,
the pre-school will be moving to new premises
within the local vicinity next year and look forward
to a new and exciting adventure in the preschool’s history.
Free tea, coffee and cake were eaten in
abundance, whilst stories were swapped and an
array of old photographs and scrapbooks were
looked through.
Peter Presto and Magical Movers entertained
the children, along with a bouncy castle, face
painting and a host of free play activities, so
everyone had a smile on their face.
The sun shone from start to finish and all who
attended agreed it was a fitting event to celebrate
a fantastic 50 years of local childcare.

Headlined by The Specials, the all-dayer event
Splendour, set in the beautiful grounds of
Wollaton Park, is sure to be one of the biggest
days of the summer. Taking place on Saturday
18th July, the event will also see the Manchester
band James performing, who are best known for
their huge hit ‘Sit Down’.
Promoter DHP Family, in partnership with
Nottingham City Council and Confetti, has been
working hard to showcase a mix of long-loved
heritage acts, alongside contemporary pop
artists. One of the best all-female pop bands
of all time, Bananarama, will be headlining the
Confetti Stage. Singer of the moment Jess Glynne, best known
for featuring on Clean Bandit’s ‘Rather Be’, as
well as her debut single, ‘Right Here’, will be
bringing her distinctive voice to the main stage.
The full main stage line-up is The Specials,

Ferocious Dog will be delivering their own take
on Celtic folk by mixing up traditional instruments
– fiddles, whistles, mandolins – with a bit of rock
'n’ roll attitude. With their unique, aggressive, yet
feel-good music they are a favourite in the city
making history last year by becoming the only
unsigned act to ever sell out the Rescue Rooms
in Nottingham, not only once but twice.
Councillor Dave Trimble said: “It’s great to see
more much-loved groups being added to the
Splendour line-up. We’re looking forward to a
fantastic family summer day out in the beautiful
surroundings of Wollaton Park.”
Tickets for Splendour start at £20 for 11 to 17

JOGLE CHALLENGE
By Pam Garget
A local cycling enthusiast has completed the

was 137 miles through the Scottish Highlands
and we climbed over 5,000 feet of hills every
day. I have been overwhelmed by the financial
and moral support from friends and family. I am
chuffed to not only achieve a personal ambition
and become an 'End-to-Ender', but to also raise
so much money for Macmillan."

PROJECT GETS THE
GREEN LIGHT The total project cost is £517,000 with £388,000
of this being made up grants from Sport England,
along with £125,000 from the England and

A visionary project, which will help rehome
two cricket teams and boost football in the
Nottingham community, moved a giant step
further this week with the announcement of a
£150,000 Sport England grant.
Around £230,000 will come from the goodwill of
Nottingham architects Maber which is designing
the scheme and construction giant Willmott
Dixon who are building it, supported by its supply
chain partners. The project has attracted massive
support from other local partner organisations
and supporters, 21 in all.
The grant is part of several funding streams
which will see the development of a brand-new
dedicated cricket clubhouse located on the
Victoria Embankment.
The project is the vision of the West Bridgfordbased Trent Bridge Community Trust and they
want to leave a true legacy from the Ashes Tests
at Trent Bridge. The new clubhouse will drive the
trust’s aim of bringing cricket back into the heart
of the city of Nottingham.
The four partners behind the scheme are
Nottingham City Council, Trent Bridge
Community Trust who represent Nottinghamshire
Cricket Club and Nottinghamshire Cricket Board,
city architects Maber and construction giant
Willmott Dixon.
Tracey Francis, of the Trent Bridge Community
Trust, said: “This is a hugely exciting, visionary
project which will really benefit the local
community by boosting sport for all in the city.
They include project managers Faithful & Gould,
engineers Curtins, engineers Couch Perry Wilkes,

to be played at Victoria Embankment for the next
100 years.”
Work is set to start shortly on the clubhouse
which will create four changing rooms, toilets,
showers, disability access, rooms for officials,
kitchen area, and external viewing area. The build
is expected to take 24 weeks with an official
launch as part of the Ashes Test in early August
2015 by England and Australian players.

PET ADVICE: KITTEN
CHAOS
By Ella Carpenter (Radcliffe Animal Shelter)
Throughout the spring and summer months, it
is the busiest time for numerous animal shelters
across the country.
It's the time of year which sees more cats and
kittens coming into us. Although kittens are the
sweetest of creatures, the real situation isn't
sweet at all.
For shelter staff and volunteers, kitten season
can be the very worst time of year to witness so
many unwanted and neglected animals week
after week.
The countless ways in which they are found
abandoned and abused will never cease to
astound us. From those taped in boxes to those
thrown in wheelie bins – the only hope is that
someone may find them in time. Kitten season is the period when births peak. It
happens predominantly when the weather gets
warmer and is a time of year when resources are
really stretched.
Whilst kittens are adorable, there simply aren't
enough homes for all of them. Instead, they
overwhelm shelters, which are often taxed for
space at the best of times. These are the times
when extra appeals are needed for people to
adopt from animal shelters.
19
When the kittens come in, they can often be
small, underweight and have parasites. We get
them cleaned up, healthy and socialised, ready
for re-homing.
All this pushes staff time and veterinary costs to
the maximum. Neonate kittens - those who are
about two weeks old - must be bottle-fed every
few hours.
Shelters must place them with someone who is
trained to care for such young and vulnerable
animals.
Kittens older than this will still require extra care.
Their immune systems aren't strong, so disease
and illness are concerns. Getting them fit enough
to re-home is only half the battle.
Once they reach this point, we have to hope
enough permanent new homes can be found for
them all and we need to do this fairly quickly as
the demand for new admissions is never ending.
Whilst we appeal for kitten homes, we still cannot
forget the adult cats who need new homes. As
always, our constant message is to please be
responsible and neuter your cat.
If you can do one thing, please do this and help
us to reduce the number of unwanted animals. If
you need help please call us on 0115 933 4422 or
send an email to [email protected] and,
of course, we would love to hear from you if you
can offer a permanent new home for an animal
in need.
RUSHCLIFFE 50+ FORUM
By Alan Wain
The inaugural meeting of the Forum - originally
known as Rushcliffe Older People’s Forum - was
in 2004.
The Forum has just had its 11th Annual General
Meeting, which was held in West Bridgford. At
the meeting, a review was carried out of the
Forum’s 2014-2015 events.
It was recalled that four open forums had been
held with talks, information stalls or activities.
Suggestions are very welcome from the
membership regarding the content of the open
forums throughout the year; especially relevant
is the presentation of information on factors
affecting personal well-being.
After the normal business of the AGM,
councillor Barrie Cooper gave a very interesting
talk on the structure and work of the Rushcliffe
Borough Council.
The afternoon concluded with an informative talk
by John O’Connor of Flamingo Legal Services
Ltd, on various aspects of preparing for ‘The
Mature Years’.
The next Open Forum, will be held on Tuesday
15th September from 2pm until 4:30pm at
St Luke’s Church Hall, Leahurst Road, West
Bridgford, NG2 6GL.
Admission to the Open Forum is free.

WE SHOULD CELEBRATE
THE TRAM
POEM: OUR HOUSE
By Pat Dring
Trams are up and running and I don’t understand
why people are moaning about it. I can’t wait for
them to be in public service and we get to use
this great form of transport.
We bought our house in 1968, for eighteen hundred pounds.
A little terrace in a row, anything bigger was out of our bounds.
It had a loo in the garden, a bath downstairs, three bedrooms.
It will now give local people a fantastic link with
the city centre and beyond in a quick, clean and
efficient manner.
After a couple of years, we had a bedroom turned into a bathroom. All pale blue,
Although we still kept the outside loo.
The roadworks I thought were s small problem
but not as bad as people made out. Lets be
honest, a short-term period for long-term gain is
surely worth it in anyone’s books.
The kitchen was extended, to incorporate the old bathroom.
For us that couldn’t be to soon.
This lasted us for many years.
I do not see people moaning about the A453 and
that delays hundreds and hundreds of people
from getting in and out of the area each and
every day.
Although the kitchen still drove me to tears.
Then a few years later we had the kitchen, flattened to the ground.
It cost several times more, than the original, eighteen hundred pounds.
The amount of times I have sat on the A453
waiting to get to the Fabis traffic lights, it nearly
sent me crazy such was the frustration.
Then up sprang a brand new kitchen fittings and all.
Also a new washroom and loo, but guess what has happened to the walls.
Colin
I started writing, a little, bit by bit, now there are no walls to be seen.
They are all covered in cuttings, of stories, poems, articles, etc, photos,
or of places I’ve been.
When people go to our loo, they disappear for ages,
Stuck in there reading pages after pages.
Our kitchen cupboard fronts are all covered as well.
There certainly has been a story to tell.
Life has certainly changed, beyond my wildest dreams.
Life is reflected, upon the walls, reams by reams.

BRICKS 4 KIDZ
MAKING FUN IN
RUSHCLIFFE
www
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
She told The Local News: “We plan our camps
to maximise the fun, whilst giving structure to
the day.
"There’s model plans to follow and we explain
how and why things work the way they do.
Youngsters in Rushcliffe are going to have a
'Bricktastic' summer, according to Nottingham's
Bricks 4 Kidz.
Using Lego bricks, the company provides
programmes and camps for kids to learn and
build whilst having fun.
There's a fantastic range of themes based on
Minecraft, Pokemon, Clash of Clans, Super
Heroes and more.
There's even a special Goose Fair camp where
kids can make moving theme park rides.
Adam Goodridge, co-owner of Bricks 4 Kidz,
explained that the kids have great fun learning
whilst they play.
"Most of the parents from our half-term camps
have already been in touch about booking for the
summer, so their kids are obviously going home
happy and fulfilled and who doesn’t like playing
with Lego bricks?”
“We’re really competitive on price in comparison
to childcare, especially when booking for siblings
or week-long camps.
"Parents are telling us that their kids absolutely
love our camps and as a family ourselves we
think there’s no better endorsement.”
Bricks 4 Kidz can be contacted by logging onto
their website at Bricks4KidzNotts.uk.
LOCALLY PRODUCED
FOR YOU
Locally Produced for You have expanded into
new premises and are now situated above The
Health Store on Central Avenue.
Their new space stocks work from over 100 local
makers and artists - and continues to grow.
They specialise in personalised gifts but they
also have a beautiful range for jewellery, artwork,
homeware accessories, clothing and also
greetings cards.
There is also additional space for a diverse range
of creative workshops, including glass making,
lampshade making, ceramics, embroidery,
crochet, patchwork and needle felting to name
but a few.
Bookable children's workshops are also available
during the holidays.
"Kids love playing with Lego bricks, so we give
them the chance to build some of their favourite
characters," he said.
On the calendar for August there is how to make
a sock monkey, make your own purse and the
popular gardening club.
"The great thing is they don't realise that they're
learning the basics of science, technology,
engineering and maths along the way."
Introduction to craft workshops will also be
available from September, held during the week
for children who are home educated.
The local company started in 2014 and already
runs after-school classes in over 30 schools,
taking bookings for birthday parties from all
across the city.
Locally Produced for You would love to hear
from you if you work in a local school and would
like to bring makers/crafts into your school to tie
in with the curriculum or run as an after-school
craft club.
The summer camps are the latest offering to keep
kids happy over the long school holidays.
You can find out more on their website or email
Kate at [email protected]. Opening
hours are Tuesday to Friday from 9:30am to
2:45pm and Saturday 9:30 to 5pm.
Co-owner Kara Goodridge feels there’s nothing
worse than a bored kid over the summer break.

MOTORING ADVICE –
CLUTCH WEAR
By Arnold Butler
It is very important to make sure your vehicle
is regularly serviced and you have a reliable
recovery service. No matter how well your vehicle
is serviced, there are certain parts that are not
serviceable and it is when these parts fail that
you need the back up of a recovery service.
Fortunately, I have both a good garage and
recovery service and I needed them a while
back. I developed a hydraulic fluid leak inside
the clutch housing, which is not serviceable. This
quickly leaked onto the clutch, which made the
clutch fail.
The first being leaving your foot on the clutch
unnecessarily, perhaps using it as a foot rest.
When you have finished using the clutch, a driver
should take their foot away from it and place it to
one side or underneath the pedal.
A common reply to this is “if I need to stop
quickly, I will not have time to push my clutch
down”. This is wrong, the longer you leave the
clutch up the quicker you will stop, as the engine
is helping to slow the car down, and to be blunt,
does it matter if you stall as long as you have
stopped without causing injury or damage.
Another common fault is pressing the accelerator
too much and holding the clutch at biting point
for too long when moving off, which is causing
23
the clutch not to engage fully, therefore it is
slipping and this will cause wear. Constantly
moving off in the wrong gear will also cause
unnecessary wear.
One other point is approaching a corner, not
changing down, pushing the clutch down to go
round the corner then pressing the accelerator
and bringing the clutch back up again in the
same gear. This is also very dangerous as you
have no proper control of your speed.
These tips are provided by Arnold Butler your
local driving instructor, who can be contacted on
0115 921 7579, or you can leave visit the website
at butlerdrivingschool.co.uk.
My car was quickly repaired within 24 hours with
a comment “it is a pity you have had to replace
the contaminated clutch, you could have done
many more miles”. This meant I would have done
over 100,000 miles on the same clutch.
This reminded me of a conversation I had with a
driver who got less than 30,000 miles out of his
clutch. There is no reason why a clutch that is
in normal use cannot last the life of the car, but
that's if it is driven correctly.
There are many reasons which will cause
excessive wear of the clutch, all of which are just
as serious and, of course, bad driving.

FULL-TIME ROLE FOR
LOCAL APPRENTICE
Local apprentice Alex Woltman has secured a
job with strapping equipment specialist, Mosca
Direct Ltd. Alex, 21, was appointed to the role
of service and warehouse co-ordinator after
impressing Mosca directors during his 12-month
apprenticeship with the company.
Leaflet deliveries starting from just £25 per thousand
at all. I just kept my head down in the hope that
it would happen. I’ve really enjoyed being part of
the service team; they’re such a brilliant bunch of
people and have been so supportive of me over
the past 12 months. I’m incredibly grateful for
having been offered this opportunity.”
Following the decision of the Supreme Court in
November 2014, a failure to disclose to a client a
large commission payment of a single premium
PPI policy made the relationship between the
lender and the borrower unfair. Alex, who lives in West Bridgford, initially
joined Mosca in March 2014. During his first 12
months he gained valuable experience across
a wide range of service team administrative
functions, before being offered his full-time
position. Mosca worked closely with New College
Nottingham’s Business to Business team in the
initial appointment of Alex and as part of his
apprenticeship, he attended regular workshops
at the college where he learned about customer
service, first-line customer support and various
administration processes.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has now
announced that it is considering new rules on
how customers should be compensated. The Financial Conduct Authority's response to
the ruling indicates that even if the PPI policy
is otherwise sound, the seller could still have
to repay the customer if it has received a big
undisclosed commission. You may therefore have a claim to make in
these circumstances. Mosca’s Julie Walton said: “We have been
very impressed with Alex’s performance over
the past 12 months. He has fitted into both
the department and the rest of the company
exceptionally well. Over the next few months, he
will continue to gain experience in other areas of
our warehouse and servicing department."
Please make contact with Bill Martin at Curtis
Parkinson Solicitors in Nottingham for a first
free interview.
Telephone him on 0115 964 7765 for more details
about this subject.
Alex said: “I’m delighted to have been offered the
role on a permanent basis. I hadn’t expected it

JULY RECIPE: RICOTTA
TAGLIATELLE
Many businesses are already planning for their
Christmas celebrations and so the Mediaeval
Lodgings was set up with a festive feel.
There is a lot going for this recipe. It’s school
holidays and the kids will enjoy helping. It’s got
lot of colour, flavour and good for the veggies
too, so have a go and enjoy.
Robert Brackenbury said: “Holme Pierrepont is a
perfect and unique choice for Christmas. Not only
is it a beautiful, atmospheric venue, it also gets
you out of the busy city centre and yet you’re
only 10 minutes away.”
By Kath Oakley
Ingredients - 400g/14oz tagliatelle
- 4 large vine tomatoes, chopped
- 100g bag of rocket, chopped
- ½ red onion, chopped
- 250g tub ricotta
- Salad dressing to taste, maybe 3-4 tbsp
- Salt & black pepper
The Mediaeval Lodgings which dates back to
1500, with its exposed beams and atmospheric
log fire, is perfectly suited to small dinners of up
to 40 people and up to 75 for a drinks reception.
Alternatively, the whole house can be taken over.
The Brackenbury's have recently linked up with
Nottinghamshire’s award-winning pub group
Moleface, who also offer an excellent outside
catering facility.
Method
Simply cook the tagliatelle for 8-10mins.
Combine tomatoes, rocket, onion and season
well with salt and black pepper. Drain the pasta
and toss in the salad dressing, add the rest of the
ingredients and serve with some good bread.
John Molnar, MD of Moleface, said: "We
are very excited to be working with one of
Nottinghamshire’s most stunning venues. The
opportunities to use this lovely house are huge,

TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE
YOUR POSTURE
If you’re a deskbound all day, it’s no wonder you
get tension in your neck, shoulders and back,
is it? Claire Mockridge, local a pilates expert, is
listing her top tips on how you can do to improve
your posture right now.
Get up and move
The number one reason people suffer with back
pain is because our current lifestyle requires us to
sit down – a lot. At work, rest, play and in transit
we’re sitting. Our spine isn’t designed for this
constant positioning. So, if you’ve been seated
for more than 30 minutes, get up and move.
Stretch regularly
Regular stretching of your chest, neck, back and
shoulders is paramount to getting blood flow into
those aching/shortened muscles, relieve tension
and ease the symptoms.
Where are your shoulders?
Stop lifting your shoulders. Just relax them down.
Now, make a concerted effort, throughout the
rest of the day to become more aware of your
shoulder positioning.
Do pilates
Doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors and
physiotherapists all condone pilates as a safe
and effective form of exercise, which can combat
back pain. Pilates works your deep abdominal muscles or
core, which in turn help support your back.
The more you strengthen your core, the stronger
your back will become from the support of your
abdominals at the front.
The next Pilates for Beginners six-week course
in West Bridgford starts at 8:30pm on Tuesday
14th July.
Visit the website clairemockridge.com for more
information about the courses.

DARE TO DREAM
Do you ever find yourself stating “I can’t
because…”? How different is that if you add “but
I could if…”! What’s stopping you? What needs
to change? Is it thoughts, state or attitude? If
you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what
you’ve always got.
We can’t change the past, but we can change
how we allow the past to affect us. Don’t allow
the past to spoil the future – it hasn’t happened
yet. If we dwell in the past and fear the future, we
forget about now.
Do you need help to take stock of what’s wrong
and take steps to make things right? If you
want motivation, encouragement, guidance and
support to be the person you deserve to be,
then call Kate Blatherwick for a free, confidential
no-obligation consultation.
Kate is a clinical hypnotherapist,
psychotherapist, EFT practitioner and weightmanagement consultant. She has recently been
awarded senior practitioner status by the General

I BEAT CANCER, NOW
I FEEL FITTER THAN
EVER - READ GILL'S
AMAZING STORY
In exactly one year, Gill Watson has managed to
shed an amazing five stone with Slimming World
and now she feels fabulous.
During her treatment for cancer, Gill's weight
had increased.
Without the help and support of the group she
says it would not have been possible.
Every Saturday she leaves full of motivation and
inspiration, which keeps her focused for the week ahead.
If you would like the help and support to lose
weight, join them in their new venue each
Saturday morning at 9:30am.
As from 4th July they will meet at the Rugby Club
on Stamford Road in West Bridgford. For more
information please call Naomi on 07734 791608.
It was hard enough to battle the disease and food
wasn't really that important.

Would you be enjoying this summer more if you
were fitter?
Do you want to be able to keep up with your

Following her treatment, Gill was referred
to Slimming World by the doctor to see if it
could help.
It is a friendly class that will help to improve your
circulation and range of motion with fun, dance
fitness routines.
Naomi, Gill's consultant, recalls: "I clearly
remember the day that Gill joined my West
Bridgford group.
The classes are made up of moves which avoid
excess stress on your joints.
Erika uses a wide variety of music from different
decades and nationalities and there’s no jumping
or floor work included.
"My own mum was in hospital fighting cancer at
that time.
“Gill told me that she had survived the disease
and had been given a second chance of life.

- Instability when walking, or weakness in your legs?

GARDENING
JULY GARDEN DIARY
By John Draper
Gardens should be looking in peak condition
now, after all the hard work of spring.
So now’s the time to make the most of them with
some fun family weekends, barbecues and al
fresco dining.
However, you can’t rest on your laurels.
There are still jobs that need doing to keep it
looking great all through summer.
Watering will be the main job of the month and
can be quite time consuming, but not necessarily
expensive even if you have a water meter.
However, do whatever you can to reduce your
garden’s reliance on water.

Flower Beds & Borders
Having spent a lot of your time, effort and
probably money on your bedding plants, it pays
to ensure they flower their heads off for as long
as possible.
and will also need deadheading to encourage
more flowers.
You can even do this well into the autumn,
depending on the weather.
Make sure you feed well afterwards to ensure a
further flush of flowers.
Regular feeding with a liquid plant food will
give them the energy to flower on and on. You
can stop your plants wasting that energy by
regular deadheading.
This involves removing the faded flower along
with the seed head or seedpod developing
behind the flower. They will then continue to
flower profusely.
Many herbaceous and perennial plants will
have produced their first flush of summer flowers

Patio Gardening
Frequent watering is essential for plants growing
in tubs, containers and especially hanging
baskets, which are very prone to drying out.
This could mean every day during warm, sunny
and windy weather. Try and keep the compost
evenly moist.
You can always test the compost by pushing your
finger into it and feeling if it’s damp.

THE TREND IS TO
IMPROVE AND NOT
MOVE
A recent national survey showed that 78% of UK
homeowners believe that renovation is the better
option to the cost of moving house.
Having been involved in the landscape business
over 30 years, I can see why this is the trend. The
availability of materials to make your home more
special and user-friendly has never been so large.

can be used inside and out have always been
limited, but this now a thing of the past.
Spice things up with some well thought through
planting, a couple of large matching urns and a
simple lighting scheme - and suddenly you want
to sit outside as its more appealing.

Nowadays the limitations for what you can do are
only restricted by your imagination and budget.
I look at things that provide opportunities to
improve your garden, such as bi-fold doors
letting the outside in and changes to the way it
is possible to make the outside living surface
seamless with the inside.
It has always been possible to deck to the same
height as your internal floor, making the need for
nuisance steps redundant, whilst at the same
time giving a much cleaner, uncluttered finish.
What many do not realise that is now possible
to do the same with paving, if the technical
issues are resolved of breaching the house damp
proof course.
The results can be stunning. You open the doors
and step unhindered into the garden. With a good
choice of materials you can link the inside and
outside, making the area look more spacious.
The benefit is that when things become more

WHY CHOOSE
PROGRASS FOR
YOUR LAWN? FIND
OUT MORE HERE!
When choosing and entrusting a company to look
after your lawn - which is usually the centrepiece
of any garden - you have to be sure that you
make the right choice.
Lawncare, when not done correctly, can do more
harm than good and if it goes wrong, then the
recovery could take most of the season that you
use your garden.
Prograss are one of the few qualified, local,
independent companies in a sea of franchises
that dominate the lawncare market.
By choosing Prograss you can be guaranteed
that each treatment will be done carefully by a
qualified operator and with the best equipment.

If you would like Prograss to come and do a free,
no-obligation lawn health check, please contact
them on 01949 837367 or send an email to

Only the best products will be used, both for
fertilising and moss/weed control. All products
used are child and pet friendly.
The fertilisers Prograss use are the same as
the ones that golf and sports fields use and are
aimed at soil conditioning and grass health and
don’t encourage excessive growth.
You can also find out much more information on
their website at prograss.com.
For example, golf courses want their greens' staff
working on the course, not cutting grass all day.
Prograss invest heavily in the best equipment
available for doing the mechanical treatments
such as aeration and scarification.
Prograss have a selection of mechanical
equipment that suits all sizes of lawns from small
to large (see picture below).
Prograss have customers ranging from lawns of
10m2 up to lawns of over an acre. Each customer
is equally important to Prograss.
Although the core of the business is domestic
lawns, Prograss have also done work on football,
rugby and cricket pitches.

LOCAL MAN NEIL
COMES OUT ON TOP
AT RHS GARDENING
AWARD
RHS award-winning garden designer and local
man Neil Sutcliffe returned to the prestigious
BBC Gardeners World Live recently for a very
special reason.
He returned there after being chosen as one
of four finalists in this year’s exciting Lifestyle
Garden Competition.
The Lifestyle Gardens category is brand new for
this year and not at any other RHS show.
33
The category is actually aimed to create inspiring
design, packed with exciting take-home ideas to
fulfil the needs of garden owners in every stage
of life.
From starter home to young family and ultimately
a retirement haven, the gardens will represent key
lifestyle stages in a gardener's lifetime.
'Sociability' is a garden designed to wow at the
weekend without the work during the week.
A low-maintenance space providing informal
areas where cooking, dining and relaxing with
friends are combined.
Using modern materials and features gives a
clean, crisp feel to the garden.
It does this without compromising on the sense
that this is still a green space where you can
enjoy being outdoors.

GARDENING
Continued fro page 30.
Lawns
In order to get your lawn into shape, so it looks
beautiful all summer, its time to give it some
summer TLC.
Correct mowing and good feeding will be
essential, as will controlling any weeds and
repairing bare areas.
During an average summer, regular rain showers
should keep the lawn well watered. If not and
it looks like a drought spell is on the cards, it is
definitely worth getting out the sprinkler to give
the grass a thorough soaking.
To ensure the water soaks in instead of running
off, spike the surface with a garden fork first. To
measure how much water is being delivered,
place jam jars over the lawn. When there is 3cm
(1in) of water in the jam jar, the lawn has received
enough water.
If you would like some independent advice on
your lawn, don’t hesitate to call Greener Gardens.
Our team would be delighted to share our
knowledge and recommendations for getting the
best from your lawn.
Grow Your Own
To ensure bumper crops, make sure the soil is
kept evenly moist and doesn’t dry out.
This can also lead to cracking in root crops, poor
yields and bitter flavours.
Pay particular attention to peas, runner beans,
French Beans and all fruiting crops.
To ensure large crops and great flavour from your
tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and other fruiting
vegetables, start feeding as per instructions,
once the first fruit has set with Tomorite.
Stay up to date on the go Facebook.com/nottslocalnews
Keep earthing up potatoes to improve the yield
and prevent the ones developing near the surface
turning green.
They will need watering if the weather is dry, as
this will help to swell the developing tubers and
so improve the yield.
Feeding over the leaves weekly with a soluble
Plant Food will ensure the stems are strong
and healthy.
This will provide nourishment right down to the
roots and developing potatoes.
Trees, Shrubs, Roses & Climbers
Roses are very hungry plants and will need a
second feeding now to ensure they continue
flowering all summer – and beyond.
A dressing around the roots with a Rose & Shrub
Plant Food will keep them flowering.
If your roses seem shy to produce flowers at all,
dress the soil around the roots with Sulphate of
Potash for improved flowering.
Roses also need deadheading. It was always
recommended to cut back the flowering stems
by around 10-15cm (4-6in).
This is no longer recommended and it is far
better to simply and carefully snap off the fading
flower and seedpod with thumb and forefinger.

lawncare specialist.

AN ENGLISHMAN
AND HIS LAWN, BY
PROGRASS
An Englishman really does loves his lawn. He
takes great pride in its rich green colour and its
healthy appearance.
As he stares lovingly out of the kitchen window,
the lady of the house shakes her head wondering
why his attention is not on the beautiful
borders filled with the wonderful flowers and
shrubs that have taken her many hours of hard
work to perfect.
Sadly for her, I’m afraid that an Englishman does
love his lawn.
Suddenly the colour drains from the Englishman’s
face as he spots something.
A weed staring back at him from the middle of his
pride and joy.
Faster than a flash his shoes are on and
he descends on the unfortunate weed and
removes it.
Only then can he relax again and look forward to
putting his much-loved stripes back into his lawn.
Prograss, your local independent lawncare
company, can take away all the stress by making
your lawn green, healthy and weed free.
If you wish to have a free, on-site, no-obligation
survey please contact Prograss on 01949 837367
or email [email protected].
Alternatively, you can visit their website by

TALENTED TEEN
EXCELS IN BIKE RACE
By Stephen Jepson
On Sunday 14th June, local cycling star Oliver
Peckover impressed everyone with his cycling
prowess. The Year 12 student, from Rushcliffe
School in West Bridgford, competed in the
Loughborough University National Junior Road
Race. The exciting race consisted of seven
challenging laps, with each lap being a gruelling
13 miles long.
The circuit was extremely challenging, both
mentally and physically. An agonising one-mile
climb awaited Oliver on each lap, where the
course reached a colossal 18% gradient at the
top of the hill.
39
Their luck got even worse when an unwelcome
burst of torrential rain and wind arrived.
Coming up to the final backbreaking hill, Jack
Escritt unleashed an amazing sprint, with only
300 metres to go. Oliver was left chasing the
impossible task of catching the lightning-fast
Jack. With gritted teeth, Oliver gave it his all
but Jack had already secured the victory. After
crossing the finish line breathless and fatigued,
Oliver managed to squeeze second place by
beating James Elsmorre by just one second.
Both Oliver and his family are extremely proud of
his terrific performance and are looking forward
to the rest of the racing season. Hopefully more
success will greet Oliver in the future, as his
cycling career looks promising.
At 1:30pm, all 80 competitors were raring to
go. The conditions were picturesque as the
anticipation grew amongst every competitor.
For the first two laps, the race was unusually
uneventful. However, on the third lap, things
changed drastically. Oliver and two other fierce
rivals broke away from the other competitors with
ferocious pace.
Their hard work and determination gained them
a two-minute lead over the peloton, with one lap
remaining. Unfortunately, the peloton organised a
chase group, who closed the gap by a whopping
30 seconds in a short space of time.

SUCCESSFUL OPEN DAY
FOR KEYWORTH TENNIS
CLUB
Dave Knight and Kevin Titterton won silver in a
composite with Derby F coxed four and Kevin
was in a composite G eight with Bedford that
also won silver.
On a cloudy, cool and wet weekend, the British
Rowing Masters Championships took place
over a six-lane, 1,000m course at the National
Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont.
In the final of the men's D eights, the crew
of Chris Beesley, Iain Hill, Andy Brown, Andy
Townsend, Mike Walker, Shane MacSweeney,
Graham Angus and Paul Williamson, coxed by
Carole Dickinson, were drawn against last year's
winners Upper Thames and a group of exinternationals from London Rowing Club.
A record entry of men and women, aged 27 to
over 80, competed in age groups A-K.
Nottingham Rowing Club came away with four
gold and four silver medals, which club captain
Helen Bloor said was “a pretty good day at
the office”.
Keyworth Tennis Club had a very successful open
day last month and interest was high from the
local community.
At least 12 new members were signed up, while
many more visitors left their contact details.
Only one medal was on offer and although
the crew had a good row and beat last year's
winners, London put up the fastest time of the
day and took the gold.
The events on the Saturday were mainly for
scullers. The over-70s quadruple scull of Bill
Payne, Carl Unwin, Tony Lorrimer and Stuart
Wharton won gold.
Club chairman, John Stansfield, said: “The
weather was not the best but all four courts were
very busy all day.
“Patrick Smith and his assistants coached all
the different age groups and great enthusiasm
was displayed by the junior visitors on the mini
tennis courts.
Henley Masters, which is taking place this month,
will see the same crews competing for silverware
on the Thames.
This was Tony's 100th win of his rowing career
and his very first championship medal.
Bill Payne and Peter Taylor won gold in the J for
the over-80s double sculls. Steve Daw won silver
in the Novice E for over-55s.
Anyone interested Nottingham Rowing Club,
should contact Berni Maccabe by sending an
email to [email protected].
“Special thanks must go to Maxine Barklett and
Amanda Gunther for organising the event and to
all the members who turned out to meet and greet
the many visitors.”
Sunday was a drier day and events were for
sweep-oared boats.
Berni Maccabe and Helen Bloor won silver in a
composite D for the over-50s four. Josh Kaye
who has just joined the club coxed the boat.
It was his first masters medal having previously
coxed Durham University.
Berni and Helen, with Sarah Royles, won gold in
a composite D eight.
The final race was a win for a B four with Cassie
White, Lou Townrow, Helen Bloor and Berni
Maccabe, again coxed by Josh Kaye.
