ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
JOHN SILAO
Fashion and glamour photographer John Silao began
his practice in 1972—the year of his discharge from the
Canadian Army. His two-year detail in Europe aroused an
interest in photography, leading him to enroll in a Fine Arts
program at the Art Center in Pasadena, where he elected
a curriculum heavy with photography courses. He soon
discovered his niche— capturing glamour. Following nearly
a decade of professional work in LA and San Francisco,
his photographs eventually landed on the pages of
Cosmopolitan magazine. He has since returned to the
country of his roots to continue his craft.
John Silao was instrumental in capturing the Philippine
fashion scene and high society. He is most recognized for
his portfolio work with then model Tetchie Agbayani which
eventually led to her feature in Playboy Germany in 1982.
It was his playful yet intimate relationship with his subjects
that set his portraits apart from the rest.
Silao’s body of work, which ranges from printed photos
to what he calls “light sculptres” (images on lithographic
film encased in glass) can easily pass as the registry of the
1980’s Philippine elite.
