It's time to clean out the garage or your house of all those old car parts, and bring them to our annual swap meet coming up on March 24th at Village Ford in Dearborn. The 2012 Spring Swap and Shop is looking to be our biggest and best swap meet for Mustangs and Fords ever. I would really like to say a special thank you to Dave and Chantal Kalinowski. Every year they have been a vital part the great success of our spring and summer swaps, which are usually complete sell outs. We continue to add more spots and they still sell out. This year we will be doubling our swap spots for our summer event at the Mustang Memories show! In fact in the past few years at our spring swaps we have had vendors sell out everything they brought in the first few hours of the show! Also Bob Wheat and Nick Zak from Village Ford always roll out the red carpet for our event to ensure great success year after year! Without their assistance we could never pull off the amazing swap meet that we do each and every year! I believe we still need a few volunteers to help work with security and the gate. Please, if you would like to lend a helping hand for a couple hours, contact Dave or Chantal ASAP. On another note, we only have about another month before all of our ponies come out to play again for another fun summer! See you all soon! And stay tuned for a HUGE announcement coming later this month! About the Club The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair with the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the 2012 GT or the 2004 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. General Meetings General membership meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at: Joy Manor 28999 Joy Road Westland, MI 48185 734.525.0960 A buffet dinner is served a 6:30 pm for $11 per person so come early and socialize over dinner. General meetings are open to the public and are a great chance to learn more about the club. continued on page 3 Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 3 Newsletter 2012 MOCSEM Board of Directors The Accelerator is published monthly as the official newsletter of MOCSEM and is available on the club’s web site at www.mocsem.com. By Jim Adams MOCSEM Member Photos by Gary Brewer In September 2007, while on his way to school, my son Joshua spotted the 2008 Shelby GT being unloaded at Hines Park Ford in Milford, and called me to say they had the car I was looking for. I test drove the Vista Blue Shelby GT that same day and six more times while comparing it to every muscle car from Corvettes to Challengers. I felt the Shelby handled much better and had more horsepower than the others, and the rest is history. Besides, I have always wanted a Shelby since I was 12 years old. During the summer of 2010, I added Ford Racing Stage II cylinder heads and ceramic headers which increased horsepower to over 500HP. To handle the 500+HP, I added a six link rear suspension, front Shelby support bars, Bear brakes with drilled and slotted rotors, 18 inch Shelby Razor wheels with BF Goodrich gForce AS tires and a Corbeau five point racing harness. With a friend of mine, I entered the last leg of the 2011 Power Tour and drove from Wisconsin to Metro Beach. I have won Best in Class at Mustang Memories in 2009 and 2011. I am planning a trip this summer for Route 66 and to Shelby American in Las Vegas. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 7 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang Continues Evolution of Ford Racing’s Turnkey Race Car Program By Ford Media www.at.ford.com Since its victorious introduction at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968, Ford’s Cobra Jet Mustang has created a legacy of power, performance and triumph. That legacy was renewed in 2008 when Ford Racing offered a limited run of the 40th Anniversary Cobra Jet Mustang that quickly sold out. Subsequent 2010 and 2012 model year offerings of the Cobra Jet have proved just as popular. The 21st century CJ has carved its own legacy at drag strips across the country, becoming the winningest late model in NHRA with national event wins in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and numerous class records this season alone. On Friday Dec. 2, Ford Racing unveiled the 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang at the Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando, Fla. With more than three seasons of testing, racing and customer feedback, the 2013 Cobra Jet marks the continued evolution of the factory-produced turnkey race car. Designed for NHRA Stock and Super Stock competition, the 2013 model is better than ever and features the latest drag racing technology for greater speed and consistency. “The 2008 Cobra Jet is a great car. It does everything we wanted it to do,” said George Goddu, business manager, Ford Racing Performance Group. “We’re really proud of that car, but we improve with each new Cobra Jet offering and 2013 is no exception.” The 2013 Cobra Jet offers two 5.0-liter Ti-VCT engine options. Customers may choose a naturally aspirated engine with Cobra Jet induction system, CNC ported heads, high-lift cams and low-drag accessory drive, or a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharged version with CNC port-matched manifold and heads, and a proprietary 10-rib supercharger drive system for high-rpm use without belt slip. “The 5.0-liter has all the attributes to make a world-class drag racing engine and is ideal for the Cobra Jet,” said Goddu. “Both the naturally aspirated and supercharged engines will be competitive as delivered.” Additionally, the 2013 Cobra Jet chassis has been improved. Lightweight body modifications give better weight distribution and electric power steering provides better driveability without parasitic horsepower loss. A new roll cage design is optimized for safety and chassis rigidity while the brake pedal ratio has been revised for more modulation and stopping power. And the rear suspension geometry delivers faster and more consistent 60-foot times. The 2013 Cobra Jet is priced to be the best value, with an approximate MSRP of $86,000 with the naturally aspirated engine option and $93,000 with the supercharged engine. Additional options and pricing will be announced in January 2012. Like many of Ford Racing’s previous turnkey race cars, the 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang will be built by the United Auto Workers at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich. Production of Cobra Jets will commence in June 2012, with delivery of all vehicles expected midsummer 2012. Cobra Jet components will be available through Ford Performance Parts, allowing racers to upgrade their Mustangs to Cobra Jet specifications. 2013 Cobra Jet production is limited to only 50 units and orders placed through Ford dealers will be filled on a firstcome, first-served basis. Revealed By Joe Morsello www.at.ford.com By Gary Brewer MOCSEM Editor At this stage in the process, the Launch team at AAI has evaluated and prepared for new content such as the new hood, grille and headlights just to name a few. They also have developed the build sequence, installed and validated the new tooling and facilities, and much more. All new models built at Ford follow the Global Product Development System (GPDS) which looks to reduce product development costs, reduce lead time to market and improve initial product quality. In other words, GPDS efficiently creates new vehicle designs that exceed customer expectations. AAI’s Launch team met with the manufacturing business office and the Product Development (PD) teams about three years ahead of the first pilot builds to review the 2013 Mustang model content and to develop budgets associated with launching the program. “We have a lot of responsibilities, including workforce readiness, evaluating manufacturing feasibility, while managing the budgets,” said Gary Steward, Launch manager, AAI. Early in the process, the team translated the engineering specifications of the new model into a Computer-Aided Design (CAD). The design showed how all the parts are expected to piece together, making it easier for the Launch team to detect what parts and at what points in the assembly process feasibility issues may occur. In order to further prepare for mass production, three different, non-saleable, Mustang prototypes (X-1, M-1, Verification Prototype) were built at AAI. These prototype builds gave the teams their first attempts at building the entire vehicle while simultaneously developing and testing the build sequence. Once the prototype phases were completed, tested and signed off, AAI’s Launch team began the detailed and extensive build sequences. Starting with the Tooling Trial (TT), the team tested the tooling and equipment readiness, and made sure that the building, facility and infrastructure modifications were completed. Following the TT build was the Pilot Production (PP). The intent of PP is to show AAI’s readiness for the first phase of mass production while continuing to refine the build process. Then, in phase one of mass production (MP1), the vehicles built are finally ready for sale. The difference between MP1 and MP2 is that during MP1 both the previous model and the new model are built simultaneously, while only the new model isbuilt during MP2. With Job #1 for the 2013 Mustang approaching, AAI is ready to build a world-class vehicle with exceptional quality. It's a sad time at the end of the each MOCSEM general meeting kowing it is almost time to say goodbye to our Mustang friends. But after the 50-50 raffle, and the door prizes, there is one last thing to do: award The (dreaded) Bucket to a lucky member. It is a time when many shuffle off the restrooms, slide their tickets to an unsuspecting friend sitting next to them, or just try and sneak out without being noticed. Well, I was the lucky winner of The Bucket last month. When I got home, I was cautious and maybe a little afraid to open it up to see what awaited But before we get into The Bucket... The Bucket has been around a long time, not really sure how long, but longer than I've been in the club. The lucky member who wins The Bucket gets to take it home and search through it for anything that may catch your eye. You can keep any of the items you find interesting, the only stipulation is you must put back the same number of items that you have removed from The Bucket. For those of you with an artistic flare, you can express you creative passion and add to The Bucket's beauty Well, my couriousity got the better of me and I opened The Bucket. It was so full of stuff it nearly jumped out at me. My first thought was how will I ever get it all back in. I found parts to repair and maintain your classic Mustang. There was stuff to enhance your cruise night partying and stuff to decorate your refridgerator. All in all, I found The Bucket was something to be excited about and not feared. However, I am now looking forward to passing it on to the next lucky winner.
