Late news from the automotive world tells us that Buick is the leading car brand in the most populous nation on earth. In the first quarter of 2007, Buick posted a year to year sales increase of 25% in China. Aaaaaand, Buick’s market share is increasing! Not bad, huh? But wait, there’s more! Buick is introducing an electric concept car in China that is based on the Chevy Volt. GM describes the car as the “precursor of future global Buick design language” and shows the growing influence of the Shanghai Engineering and Design Group within GM. Sure, China is further away from Columbus than Toledo or even Paducah, Kentucky for that matter, but I think Buick’s progress there is interesting. My thanks go to Bobb Parks of Haydocy Pontiac / Buick / GMC for hosting our meeting last month. We were given a nice meeting room which we pretty much filled to capacity. It was good to see so many members attend the meeting. And speaking of members, I am pleased to welcome our newest member, AndrewBryce Hudson of Dayton. He has a 1951 Roadmaster, which he says is currently being restored. Aren’t they all!? I look forward to meeting Andrew-Bryce AND his ’51 at a meeting sometime soon. By the way, that makes three ‘51s in the chapter that I’m aware of: Andrew-Bryce’s, Mike Book’s Special DeLuxe (affectionately known as Bertha), and mine (affectionately known as @&#%!!). Haydocy has a great facility with some very nice cars in stock. It’s a perfect place to do what I did: Slide into the front seat of a new Lucerne and make “VRRRRRROOM!” noises. If you are thinking about buying a new Pontiac, Buick, or GMC, please support the people that support our chapter and give Haydocy a shot at your business. I was happy to see everyone who came to last month’s meeting. The meeting was well attended and we covered a lot of ground. Among other things, we talked about whether to continue selling patches or to look at some other methods of raising funds for the club. Pete Dunkel agreed to do some research on alternatives to the patches and get back to us. 28 May 2007 Memorial Day weekend Classic Car Show at Haydocy Pontiac / Buick / GMC 3895 West Broad Street Columbus, OH —continued on page 3 June 2007 Open, we need a host! The big event for the night was the discussion about Jeff Brashare’s idea of having the chapter submit a bid to host the 2009 National Meet in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show & Cruise In. The way I see it, Jeff’s proposal requires us to answer two questions. First, do we want to submit a bid for the 2009 National? Second, if we do submit a bid, do we want the National to be a show within a show or its own separate entity? We spent most of our time at the meeting discussing the pros and cons of being a part of the Arthritis Foundation Show. Let’s go over advantages and disadvantages: To the upside, if we combine with the established show, we won’t have to worry about many of the items I think of as the infrastructure of a major meet. They include to some degree or other, insurance, security, site selection, porta-johns, trailer parking, negotiating with hotels, entertainment, traffic management, car washing stations, and more. The Arthritis Show attracts great numbers of car lovers of every stripe so we would be exposed to their crowd along with ours. Along the same line, the BCA attendees would get to see a wider variety of cars than they would if our meet was a stand alone event. And not to be forgotten, our meet would add to the AF’s fundraising. To the downside, the National would be a part of a larger meet and wouldn’t have the prestige and identity a national meet normally does. Our meet would have to operate as a show within a show and would be bound to operate in accordance with the Arthritis Foundation’s rules for the show. The AF puts on great a event, but its interests may not always coincide with our interests as a chapter and/or a national organization. Judging cars is handled differently by The BCA and the AF and that creates some issues. Mike Book (For those who don’t know, Mike is a member of our chapter and runs the BCA National Office.) spoke plainly about the time we held the Great Lakes Regional as a show within the AF show. Based on that experience, he would not support holding the National as part of the AF show. He is, however, an ardent supporter of having an independent National in Columbus. Mike also spoke about his involvement with national meets for the Cadillac and LaSalle clubs and offered suggestions that involved separate sites and/or dates for a Columbus National in 2009. Since the national office plans to take over registration for national meets in 2009, that’s something we wouldn’t need to worry about whether we run an independent meet or are part of the AF show. (I have asked Jeff Brashares to weigh in on the matter with an article and/or by coming to the next meeting.) Since I opened this article by mentioning China, I’ll close it the same way. I have heard that the Chinese have a saying, “May you live in interesting times.” Our next meeting will be a very interesting time! Come join us at Joe’s Crab Shack at State Rte. 161 and Sawmill Road. Start time is 6:30. Thank you to Steve Hunkins for setting us up at Joe’s. Come have some good food, good Buick fellowship, and tell us what you think! If you don’t, others will decide for you. See you there! John Marsh, Director, schmirector. John presiding at the March meeting 3 Future members Michael Hunkins (6) and Winston Stone (6) practice their driving skills and tactics at the March meeting March meeting minutes — Recorded by Sam Harrison The March meeting of the Central Ohio Buick Club convened at the Haydocy Buick-Pontiac dealership on West Broad street on Thursday the 22nd of the month. The meeting was called to order by Director John Marsh. The secretary and treasurers reports were both approved by the members. Ken Jacquot, John Westfall, and Riv Rivenburg discussing a 2009 Buick National bid. A newsletter update from Brian Stone indicated that the online monthly publication is a great success. Hard copies of the Horn are still being recieved by about 20 members. Old bussness included Tom Kromer indicating that there would be some differences in the judging at the arthritis show and our members could sign up now to judge the various Buick classes. In addition, it was mentioned that there will be an opportunity for members to attend the Waynesville Cruise-In on April 14-15, 2:00 - 4:00; a chance for everyone to get their cars out early this year. New business included the following items: 1. A report on our club sales of BCA patches and the feasibility of continued sales. 2. Purchase of 20 raffle tickes from the Seattle chapter in support of the 2007 national meet. 3. Discussion on the practicality of hosting a national meet in the next few years. 4. Welcoming of new member Andrew B. Hudson as our newest club member. 5. Warm wishes for a speedy recovery to Danny Waitzman after his accident. 6. Congratulations to Doug Jones, Steve Hunkins, Riv Rivenburg and Jeff Morris who all displayed cars at the Columbus Auto Show. The meeting adjourned at about 8:20pm with a fine selection of snacks provided by Director Marsh. Some members also took the opportunity to stroll through the showroom and examine the new products available at the Haydocy dealership. Dan and Renessa Coleman sell tickets to the 50/50 raffle. 4 Dan Coleman won the 50/50 raffle. His ticket was selected by Winston Stone, who received a nice tip for his effort. Our 1972 Buick Electra 225 — Larry Robinson Larry Robinson’s 1972 Black Electra 225 Larry and Sabrina 5 I had a l979 Corvette and lost custody of it in a divorce. Then I purchased a 1984 Corvette from a guy in Columbus, OH that was getting a divorce. Toward the end of 1992 the Postal Service reorganized and I was promoted to a Western Area job, which is located in Denver, CO. The Postal Service moved my family and me to Aurora, CO, about 20 miles Southeast of Denver. They paid to ship the ‘84 Vette to Aurora. I kept the ’84 Vette until 1996. It was in mint condition but I wanted a four-wheel drive vehicle so I sold the ’84 Vette to a young man in the Navy. I bought an older Jeep Wagoneer, not sure of the year, after I sold the ‘84 Vette. I only had it a short time and decided I liked the four-wheel drive vehicles so I sold the Wagoneer and searched for a newer four-wheel drive vehicle. I found my 1995 Ford Explorer. It was two years old when I bought it from a college student; he could not afford the Explorer and the tuition for college. I still have the Explorer! After I had a couple of years under my belt with four-wheel drive vehicles I decided I wanted a classic car. I had not decided what to get but I started looking for a classic car. After several months I found the 1972 Buick Electra 225 in Greeley, CO. The gentleman that had it was a retired Navy pilot. His father bought it new and handed it down when he died. The retired Navy pilot was building a new home and did not have room for the “Deuce and a Quarter”. This car has not been restored but has been painted twice. The current and original color is black and the interior is original. The interior is paisley blue with blue floor mats. The wheel covers are original but I am looking for chrome wheels or chrome wheel covers for it, give me a call if you know where I can obtain chrome wheels for it (614-206-4591). In March 2007 I had the engine and engine compartment detailed. The engine is red with some chrome. The speedometer recently turned to 91,000 original miles. In 2002 I became the Postmaster of Medina, OH and the Postal Service moved the Deuce and a Quarter, my family and me back to Ohio. I retired from the Postal Service in 2003. In 2004 we built our retirement home in Ashville, OH, which is located north of Circleville and South of South Bloomfield off of US 23. We moved ourselves to the new home where we plan on spending the rest of our lives. Participating in the 2007 International Auto Show — Doug and Darlene Jones If you have an opportunity to place your car at Columbus’ International Auto Show as a prop to the new models, be sure to do it. It’s some work, a bit of stress, and a lot of fun. We had that chance for this year’s show March 8 to 18 and loaned out our 1929 Buick Sport Roadster to the show’s organizers for the period. Our access to an invitation came from our club colleague Jeff Brashares who in matters of Columbus and car shows is ubiquitous. Here’s our recollection of the recent experience. The event has a fairly strict set of requirements once participation is agreed to. One is the specific day and time when you are to arrive and depart the Convention Center. Another is to leave a near-empty gas tank and to tape the gas cap shut. Still another is to leave two (why two?) sets of keys with the organizers and the battery disconnected. However, some accommodation is made to peculiar circumstances, like (for us in an open car) bad weather on the designated delivery date. On this last, it was about 28 degrees the morning we drove the old Buick from our garage in Upper Arlington to the Convention Center with the side curtains on. Riv Rivenburg convoyed with us in his 1941 sedan. We entered the Center on the designated ramp and, once inside, were carefully directed among the new cars to a prominent spot in the hallway to the display area. A special carpet, set of museum chains, and a poster on an easel describing the car were waiting for us when we parked and shut it down. At least four fellow club members had cars in the hallway, and a bond of participants was quickly struck among us. Security seemed reasonably good (though I did wonder what it was like at, say, 3:00am), and Darlene and I felt comfortable about leaving the treasure there for ten days. I thought to myself that there were four vulnerable parts on that car that I especially would not want to lose – the gear shift knob, the brass map light on the dash, the toilet seat radiator cap, and the gas cap. They were all there when the event closed. The organizers generously provided parking passes for surrounding lots and, of course, for access to the show itself. We “stopped by” every few days to observe the observers of our car. It was interesting to hear their comments and what caught their eyes about this 78-year old roadster with the top down: the large size of the tires and steering wheel, the small size of the windshield wiper and the narrow windshield, the sturdiness of the sheet metal, and the steps to the rumble seat. And, of course, some misinformation. Departing the Convention Center at the appointed hour (5:30pm on Sunday) was a bit of a scramble, since new and old cars all tried to leave at once. Happily for us, Jeff, Steve Hunkins, and Pete Dunkel quickly pushed us out of the hallway, and we drove the ’29 out the back door with Riv and Peg and their ’41 just ahead of us. The short trip home was again cold but uneventful. And we’re glad we did the whole thing. Doug and Darlene Jones’ 1929 Buick Sport Roadster (top) and Riv and Peggy Rivenburg’s 1941 sedan 6 April meeting minutes — Recorded by Sam Harrison 19 April 2007: The meeting was opened by retired director Pete Dunkel. The treasurers report was approved following the introduction of guest, Dave Spade. Old business consisted of a report from Pete Dunkel on patch sales and the on going search for resources and vendors to continue our fund raising efforts with club products. An extensive list of new business items were brought to the clubs attention. These included the following items: 1. After much discussion a motion was made and approved for the club to not bid on the 2009 national meet. 2. News items from the Great Lakes Regional-BCA insurance will not be covering vehicles at the meet hosted by the Niagara Chapter and you must be a BCA member to be judged. 3. New ballots will be arriving to replace those in the last Bugle. 4. Sponsors of the 2007 Arthritis Show have a very nice bag and other goodies for all pre-registered vehicles. 5. The Brian Stone family will be hosting the May meeting. Check the Horn for time, date and directions. 6. First Annual Cruise-In for Parkinsons will be held on June 23rd at the Quaker Steak and Lube resturant. 7. May 19th, Hurst-Olds Club day out with Buick Club members invited to attend. This will be held in the London area with meat provided and attendees asked to bring a side dish. Please contact Steve Hunkins for additional information and to RSVP your intentions. Chairs are also requested to brought by all participants. The meeting was adjourned just as the meal arrived. [email protected] or 614.472.3220 From our old friend... — Ralph Recchie Hey Everyone, I am preparing the LeSabre convertible to be painted probably at the end of the month. In preparation I am removing much of the chrome and sanding spots that need a little extra detail. Among those areas are stone chips on the very vertical area above the grill. Last night Lilly and Lindsay were on the way to the playground (Lilly’s favorite place on Earth) when she saw me sanding and insisted that she stay and help instead. What a work ethic the kid has! (I can’t wait to buy a boat too). Here are some pictures of Daddy’s little helper. I will let you know how it turns out (both the child labor and the paint work). Have a great Easter, – Ralph <rmrecchi@gw.fis.ncsu.edu> Ralph and Lilly Thank you for your contributions and continued support of The Horn. As you all know, a lot of effort goes in to bringing you timely and relevant information to the Central Ohio BCA membership. Everyone’s input is appreciated. A mini slice of summer fun — JB Have you ever attended the Arthritis Foundation Classic Cruise-In every summer in Dublin? If you have, you know that the vast array of classic and collector vehicles are some of the best around. The Columbus Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), with the cooperation of the Central Ohio Arthritis Foundation, brought some of those vehicles to this year’s Columbus International Auto Show. Steve Hunkins and Doug Jones displayed their cars at the 2007 International Auto Show. Story on page 6. From a 1929 Buick Sport Roadster to a 1999 Shelby Series 1, twelve beautiful vehicles in all were displayed in the concourse area of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, for the duration of the Auto Show. Not only was this special exhibit meant to please the crowd and attract attention from the regular Auto Show attendees, but it also raised awareness of the Arthritis Foundation, Central Ohio Chapter, and their mission. CADA and the Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show & Cruise-In have a long standing relationship. Leonard Immke, a former President of both CADA and the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association, founded the Cruise-In with Bob Lincoln in 1982. Len worked tirelessly to contribute to the huge success that the Cruise-In is today. This summer, the Arthritis Foundation will celebrate their silver anniversary, promising the best show in their 25 year history. The Cruise-In is scheduled for July 6 & 7, 2007. Enjoying the Weather and Buicks — John Fields During a recent family vacation to Venice Florida to visit his parents Roger and Marie, John Fields had the opportunity to attend a couple car related winter events with his father. First they attended the Zephyr Hills swap-meet and auction. This is an event they have attended together for many years. Fellow club members Doug Fraits and Bill Rauch spent the afternoon browsing the swap area with them. The next day Roger and John attended the AACA winter meet in Punta Gorda Florida. Weather beautiful and sunny for both events. The AACA meet had some outstanding new restorations being shown for the first time. On another car note, a few years ago Roger began attending Wednesday coffee meetings at a local restoration shop in North Porte. It was a casual affair with a handful of folks in attendance. Now, 3 years later, Roger and John attended the meeting with nearly 60 other car nuts, many bringing their classic cars to what is now a mini car show every week. Roger keeps his bright red 1960 Lesabre convertible in Venice to enjoy all the beautiful weather, and to have a car to drive to shows. Historically, we average about 10% of the members sending in their ballots. This year it is even easier with a revised ballot process and we hope more of you vote. This year I am running for the BCA Board. I served on the Board from 2003 until 2006 and have decided to run again. I also serve as the BCA technical advisor coordinator and technical advisor for Reattas. Below are a couple of issues that the BCA Board will face in the upcoming years: The BCA membership has declined since the Flint meet in 2003, some argue that many Buick owners joined at that time for the opportunity to show their car at Flint, but for whatever the reason we did not retain those members. The importance of the total BCA membership to the average member is cost. The BCA has two major expenses. The BCA office and the Bugle. The cost of the Bugle is about 64% of our total annual budget. Like buying in bulk, the more Bugles we have printed, the price for each goes down. But, when we have fewer printed (as in fewer members) the price goes up and this could eventually mean a dues increase. It is in the best interest of every BCA member to keep the membership above our present 9,000 member number. More is even better. For comparison, the BCA office expense is about 17% of the annual budget. The second issue we are facing is the lack of interest shown by Chapters to hosting the National Meet. As of the February Board meeting, no Chapter has expressed an interest in hosting the 2009 meet. The Chapters and Board need to address this problem and find a solution. The two items above are the major issues that I see the BCA Board facing over the next few years. Sure there will be others but these are ongoing issues that affect every member and need a solution. Again please vote and consider me as one of your choices.
