November Acres think we were almost outnumbered by county Commissioners
Green/Lone
and staff and two officers from
Tree Town Hall Meeting
A few of the items discussed:
Undersheriff Tony Spurlock
talked about law enforcement and
the need for all of us to be vigilant. Our Sheriff and his officers
would rather be safe than sorry. If
you see something suspicious in
the neighborhood…..call the
cops. They want to keep us safe.
Oil and gas companies leasing
in the county and the impact it
may have if they start drilling.
Commissioner Hilbert says they
are drilling within the city limits
of Greeley. (Hmmmm..is that
good or bad?)
The need to re-visit transportation rules in the county to see if
the aging population can be better
accommodated. (Could that lead
to Walt Barnard on a golf cart
and Ron Brink on a skateboard?)
Commissioner Jill Repella reminded us the county has a tax
calculator on its website. Check it
out to see what items your county
tax dollars are funding. (Go to
www.douglas.co.us …to use this
interesting and informative tool.)
The Acres Green/Lone Tree
Town Hall meeting was held on
the 14th with very poor attendance. There were perhaps four
people from Acres Green, and
four people from Lone Tree. I
the Sheriff’s department. The
commissioners noted they have
had town meetings in other areas
with only one citizen in attendance. Local meetings may soon
be a thing of the past, and I don’t
blame them.
In an effort to better inform
the citizens of the county, a
“virtual” town meeting will be
held on-line from 6:00 to 7:00
PM. on Tuesday, December 6.
Visit the county website
(mentioned above) to see details
and how to submit questions to
the commissioners prior to the
meeting.
C-470
Your HOA President Ron
Brink and I recently attended a
“summit” on the future of C-470.
Good presentations were given on
possible solutions to the congestion problems, and various funding sources. You may have heard
about the “C-470 Coalition”, a
rather large group of interested
entities including: Douglas, Arapahoe and Jefferson Counties, City
of Littleton, Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Colorado Dept. of
Transportation, and others.

AMERICANS REACT TO RISING FEES AT BANKS- BANK TRANSFER DAY
Did you hear about Bank Transfer Day on November 5th? Bank Transfer Day was an independent movement, which encouraged anyone upset with big bank fees to make the move to a credit union. The movement received extraordinary results even before November 5th. Over 60,200 people “liked” the movement
through Facebook, with many stating they planned to move their bank accounts to a credit union. According to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), over 650,000 people have joined credit unions since
September 29th- the day Bank of America unveiled its now rescinded $5 monthly debit card fee. In Colorado, that amounted to 14,000 new accounts and over $100 million in new deposits.
Although November 5th has passed, it is not too late to make a change and improve your financial health.
You have many financial service providers available to you.
FINANCIAL COOPERATIVE
Credit unions are another choice for your banking needs. They are based on the cooperative structure of
people pooling their resources (money) together and helping each other. When you become a ‘member’ of
a credit union, you become an owner of the not-for-profit financial cooperative. Because a credit union is
not-for-profit and is owned by its members, revenue received from any fees assessed or interest paid on
loans is directed back to the members through lower cost services and typically better rates on loans and
savings accounts.
CONVENIENCE IS KING
Branch locations and access to funds are primary reasons for
consumers when choosing where they want their bank account.
Credit unions often beat the competition with the number of
branch locations and have a network of ATM’s larger than that of
any bank in the country. Utilizing their cooperative structure,
credit unions work together to provide better services and access
to their members.
 Over 4,430 branches
nationwide (and growing)
 Over 28,000 Surcharge-Free
CO-OP ATMs
SERVICES TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
Credit unions offer a wide range of services for your banking needs. From free checking and electronic services to auto and home loans, credit unions are ready to serve your needs.
MONEY TALKS; I’M PUTTING MINE IN A CREDIT UNION!
Do you have your primary account at a credit union? If so, and you have realized first-hand the added benefit of credit union membership; spread the word to friends and family. Credit unions rely heavily on referrals to grow. The more they grow, the more they can serve and provide the products and services that
you’re looking for.
Ready to learn more and move your money to a credit union? Your community has one available; Metrum
Community Credit Union (metrumcu.org). Please feel free to contact us to learn how we can assist with all
of your banking needs.

Acres Green has
made it through another year. This is
the time of the year

stock of what we have
and be thankful for all we have. I
know that the housing market has
been dismal for the better part of
the last three years and sadly some
of our neighbors had to give up
their homes. But for all the bad
things we have heard, Acres Green
seems to be hanging in there and if
anything, doing maybe better than
some other areas.
tor Jimmy Stewart, in the movie,
he is welcoming a new home owner. In it he says the following
which each item in hand; “Bread
that this house may never know
hunger, salt that life may always
have flavor and wine that joy and
prosperity reign forever.”
This story has a little twist.
Since we have been here, if we
have a new neighbor we put together a basket with a packet of
information on Acres Green and
Douglas County. We also include
a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine
(non-alcoholic now days) and salt.
So, for those of you old enough to
remember the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, with my favorite ac-
kind of laughed to myself. But I
hope they understood the intent –
we wanted them to feel welcome
to this great little neighborhood.
So, if you are out in your yard and
you have a new neighbor, take a
few minutes to say hello, introduce
yourself and make them feel part
of Acres Green.
As I said, we have a new next
door neighbor and Jean and I put
together a basket, took it over.
When they opened the door I
should have stopped right there,
just introduced us and say
“welcome” but we went on with
our welcoming. When I told them

December meeting at a different
location. In the past, the December
meeting was more of a Christmas
celebration. We had folks bring
treats and eats, with coffee or
punch. If you remember my previous article about the Lone Tree
Brewery and the impact they had
on our neighbors, we thought that
the December meeting should be
at this new local brewery. So I
hope that you will join us, to welcome a new neighbor to Acres
Green.
Also, if you remember from the
last newsletter, I made an offer
that if you can tell me six or more
of the languages I listed for BEER,
I’d buy the first ten people a beer!
So, below is the “official” entry,
fill it out and see me at the Lone

Default City Naming Petitions
City designation makes a difference. Acres Green is
in unincorporated Douglas County as such, the sales
tax on items coming to our homes (autos, building
supplies, appliances, etc.) should be taxed at the
rate of 5 %. This is based on the following sales taxes: state tax 2.9%, Douglas County 1%, RTD 1% and
CD (Cultural & Scientific District) .10%. Acres Green
is excluded from the Football Stadium tax. Contrast
that to Lone Tree with a sales tax rate of 6.81% &
6.9125%. Other concerns include insurance rates,
property taxes and emergency services.
To have the default city name as Littleton, petitions
need to contain names, addresses and signatures from
all homes on a given street, with vacant homes marked
as vacant.
Send the petition to: U.S. Postal Service, Attn: Mr.
Brent Todd CSA room 1138, Denver CO 80266-9334
or scan and e-mail petition to [email protected]
There is no deadline for this activity. Remember if
you purchase something delivered to your home. The
sales tax is only 5%.

Around and About
The goal is to solve the
“challenges” of C-470. The
group is chaired by our County

Most of the committee organization is finished, and ideas
from technical groups should

solutions.
Thanksgiving
I hope everyone had a great
Thanksgiving. I am writing this
the week before Thanksgiving
and you will receive it after
Thanksgiving. At any rate we’re
going to our son’s home for this
November holiday.
When you get to be a little
older, it’s nice to go to the kid’s
house and just take a dish or a
bottle or two, enjoy the family
and the meal then leave the
dishes to someone else. Seniority has some privileges you see.
Evie and I are very fortunate
and grateful to have three of our
five kids and nine of our seventeen grandkids living close to us
here in Colorado. We are very
thankful indeed.
Helping Others
Please don’t forget county
and local food banks. Various
local churches and drives do a
great job of distributing donated
items, but we must continue to
keep them supplied all year
long.
We adjourned at 7:50.

December 2011
By Kathy Koch
I attended the Douglas County forum “Living
Well/Aging Well” on November 9th. If defining
the problem is the first step in solving it, they did a
good job. They have a good understanding of the
senior needs in Douglas County and how seriously
those needs will increase with the aging population.
However, they don’t have solutions and I didn’t
hear any concrete ideas of even the next step. I did
learn of a good website for older adults sponsored
by DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments). It’s called Network of Care and can be
located at www.DRCOGNetworkofCare.org.
There is lots information and links on a variety
of subjects. Look for the icon in the upper left corner that says “live demo” for a helpful tutorial.
Update on Lone Tree Tank #2
Crews continue to work on erecting forms and placing concrete for the tank walls. Concrete columns, which
will help support the top of the tank, are also being
formed and placed. The walls and columns are nearing
completion. The focus of the work for the coming
months will then shift to the construction of the tank
top. Crews are also working on piping to connect the
two tanks.
The landscape plan for the site was approved by the
City Council on November 1, 2011. It was decided the
stain samples would remain in the weather for three more
months before the shade of stain is selected. Samples of
the stain can be found under the October 14th update.

Cub Scout Pack 986 helps Acres Green Elementary BASE program
Acres Green Cub Scout Pack
986 learned that the Acres Green
Elementary BASE program was
the victim of theft this past summer. The program had both a Wii
console and XBox console stolen
from storage on school property.
A parent in the Pack who uses
the program brought this to our
attention and the boys decided to
dedicate the proceeds from our
Pack raffle to purchase a gently
used replacement Wii, and all the
accessories needed to get them going again.
The photo above is of the Pack
presenting the replacement console
to the BASE kids on October 5 in
the cafeteria.
The Cub Scouts also participated
in a food drive on Nov. 15th with
the Acres Green Girl Scouts to
support & restock the Acres Green
Panther Pantry.
