It's hard work remodeling your front
yard, but Jay Johnson and Christina
Cook did it right. At their home at
Scorpio and Acres Green Drive
there are new trees, a fresh crisp
border of river rock, small bushes,
new mulch, and a lot of fresh pansies in the yard.
Jay and Christina live in our
community with their kids Jimi,
Devon, Charity, and Zoe. When I
asked Jay a while back what the
little bushes were, he said "I have
no idea. Christina buys the plants,
tells me where to put them, and I
plant them." The results show it is a
good partnership.
The yard looks great. Christina
also shares her expertise at her job
as a Landscape Specialist for Shea
Properties, primarily in the DTC
area.
Jay is a member of the Army
National Guard and has an interesting job. On weekends he is a
'Helicopter Fueler" making sure
the Guard's Lakota Choppers have
enough fuel on board to fly their
missions. The Lakota is a twin engine aircraft chock full of state of
the art electronics.
Jay's other job with the Guard is
a proud and somber one. He is in
charge of the four teams in the
Honor Guard that provide funeral
services for our Military Veterans
all over Colorado.
These Teams are located in Denver, Ft. Collins, Fort Carson, and
Grand Junction. Each team consists
of seven soldiers who are certified
to perform the honors. The teams
provide about 160 services (called
'missions') for our veterans per
month.
Last year they performed the
services almost 1800 times. Duties
include folding and presenting the
American Flag, providing a bugler
for "Taps", and many times a four
man firing team for the rifle salute
that is so familiar at military funerals.
Team members who include
ranks all the way from Specialist to
a full 'Bird' Colonel also provide
escort for next of kin. About 85%
of the services are held at Ft. Logan
National Cemetery, and the rest in a
wide variety of places.
Jay tells me they have held ser-
Our large community garage

vices in all kinds of weather and
many locations including backyards, garages, and nursing homes.
"We are ultimately there for the
family," and indeed they are.
We are fortunate to have these
dedicated soldiers providing the
dignity, reverence, and recognition
deserved by our deceased servicemen and women.
In their free time Christina and
Jay and the kids spend time outdoors. You'll find them running,
camping, hiking, biking and fishing
.....well maybe you won't find them
fishing. Jay says they have a great
spot up by Deckers. They catch
rainbow trout there, but he wouldn't
give me directions. Oh well....it's
cool to have this family as neighbors anyway.
Jay and Christine and family....thanks for being here.

June 2012
Jean Henke AGHOA Recorder & Publisher of the Greenleaf
The last AGHOA meeting was
held at the South Metro Fire District Station on Maximus Dr.
Ron announced that we would
hold the June 21st meeting at
the Lone Tree Brewery, 8222
Park Meadows Dr., in the meeting room at 7 p.m. This will be a
quieter place than the last time.
We hope to see as many people as
we did in Dec.
Ron updated us on the Water
Storage facility. The concrete
roof is completed, they have a lot
of fill-in to be done and should be
completed by Dec. of this year.
Building around us: work was
being done to put in ADA ramps
at Park Dr. and Park Meadows
Dr. Also work was being done on
Park Dr. in front of the dealerships.
Ron brought up the potholes
on Park Meadows Dr. Pat mentioned that Park Meadows Dr. is
in Lone Tree. Pat said he would
check on when work may be done
on that stretch of road.
There was work being done
behind one of the buildings on
Park Meadows Dr. to expand one
of the buildings. The construction
appears to be being done east of
the brew pub.
Karen mentioned that Bell
Credit Union at Yosemite & Park
Meadows Dr. was scheduled to
open the day after our meeting.
She stated that anyone belonging
to a Credit Union that is in the Co
-op network can conduct transactions at any Credit Union that is
part of that Network.
Sandy presented the treasurer’s report. The only thing of interest was the deposit of funds for
the sale of Troop 986’s trailer
with the disbanding of the Troop.
The HOA as the charter organization are holding those funds with
the hope that in a year or two the
troop will reactivate.
Pat reported on South Suburban and matching gifts. The question was asked at the last meeting
if Matching Gifts funds could be
used for roll-offs. Pat did check
on that, and it is not a possibility.
Ron mentioned that at one
time we requested to have a permanent Port-a-Potty in some of
the parks. Currently, South Suburban has been putting a Port-aPotty at Altair Park and at the
school during the summer while
the fields are used by sports
teams.
The discussion evolved to the
possibility of putting up the concrete base and frame so that the
Port-a-Potties cannot be tipped
over. The suggestion was made to
see if that frame could be a use
for Matching Funds next year.
Jean reported that Alyce has
received about 100 families membership dues for the 2012. That is
close to 10%. It was agreed that
having the list of paid memberships in the newsletter seemed to
help. We did miss listing some
due to timing.
Kathy brought the publication
“Prime Time for Seniors” which
had some good articles. She also
reported that there is no longer a
separate publication by South
Suburban for Seniors but those
activities are included in the regular catalog.
Kathy also informed us that on
the last Tuesday of each month
there is a “Coffee and chats” at
the Lone Tree Rec Center from
11:15—12:15. All are invited to come
for coffee and learn about helpful
health topics and other community
events. This is a free drop-in event,
registration is not necessary.
Karen reported we only had a couple of new home owners recently.
Since the beginning of the year only
about seven new purchases. She also
reported that there are 4 homes that are
bank owned now.
Ron reported that a medication recovery event was scheduled on Apr.
28.
Karen reported that Matt’s Recycling will pick up and haul away various items such as: appliances, mattresses, automotive parts, misc. metal
items, computer equipment, windows
& door framing, electronics, gardening
and landscape equipment. Pick up and
haul away is free for most items. Fees
exist for items such as: mattress, box
spring, steel wheels, monitors.
Items may also be dropped off at the
Highlands Ranch site. His phone numbers are 303-900-3080, or 303-8855074. www.mattsrecycling.com.
See website for more details. Karen
mentioned she has experienced quick
response when she called.
Dave questioned work on the front
gardens. Discussion revolved around
funds to spend on the front garden this
year. The suggestion was made to set
aside $250 for the front garden and it
was approved. Before deciding on
planting we will have to make sure we
have a plan to water.
Pat suggested that everyone needs
to register their phones including cell
phones with the sheriff’s office. You
can do that online through the sheriff’s
website.
Pat also mentioned that he is involved in an organization that is collecting stories from WWII vets and if
anyone knows anyone who would be
willing to tell their story. He would be
happy to talk to them.
We adjourned about 8 p.m.

City designation
makes a difference.
Acres Green is in unincorporated Douglas
County as such, the sales
tax on items coming to
our homes (autos,
building supplies, appliances, etc.) should be
taxed at the rate of 5 %.
This is based on the following sales taxes: state
tax 2.9%, Douglas County 1%, RTD 1% and CD
(Cultural & Scientific
District) .10%.
Acres Green is excluded from the Football
Stadium tax. Contrast
that to Lone Tree with a

sales tax rate of 6.81% &
6.9125%. Other concerns
include insurance rates,
property taxes and emergency services. Remember if you purchase
something delivered to
your home. The sales tax
is only 5%. There is no
deadline for this activity.
To have the default

AGHOA offers to help with your block party
Do you know your
neighbors first and last
names? How about their
children's’ names? What
about the names of their
pets? Do you know your
neighbors well enough to
wave when you pass them
on the street?
This summer may be a
good time to get to know
your neighbors by having
a block party. Having a
block party can be as simple as having neighbors
over for dessert and coffee
or as big as a barbeque for
twenty or more families.
One way to start to
know your neighbors is to
learn their names. A Website: http://
neighbors.whitepages.com
shows an aerial view of
your home and those
around you along with the
names and addresses of
your neighbors and in
some cases phone numbers.
Knowing your neighbors can enhance your
home life. Neighbors who
know one another help in
emergencies and look out
for one another creating a
sense of security for the
block.
National night out is
Tues. Aug. 7, 2012 and is
the night when neighbors
are encouraged to get out
and meet one another.
Pick a date that works for
you and your neighbors.
Plan yours today!
As an incentive to
have a block party this
summer, your AGHOA is
willing to help fund items
for your block party.
The AGHOA will reimburse the organizers of
the first five block par-
ties up to $25 each. for
items such as paper products, ice cream, soda (not
for alcohol) etc.
Guidelines for requests
for reimbursement are as
follows:
 The person submitting
reimbursement must
be an AGHOA member for 2012.
 Proof of a block party
must be submitted
with request (i.e. pictures of the event, invitation to an officer
or director to attend
the event).
 Receipts for purchases
and what was purchased must be submitted with the request.
 Block party must include four or more
homes on the block.
 Reimbursement must
