vessels. People will boat in
groups creating numerous distractions, which can have deadly
consequences.
“Boating during Memorial
Day weekend means being a
more responsible boat operator,” said DBW’s acting Director
Lucia Becerra. “Operators may
have people on board their vessels who do not normally boat.
Familiarizing passengers with
the location of safety equipment
and how to be safe aboard will
decrease the likelihood of being
involved in a boating accident.”
Here are some suggestions
from the DBW for boat operators
to decrease the chances of being
involved in a boating accident:
1) Always wear a life jacket. 2)
Avoid alcohol. Everyone who
drinks alcohol on board is at risk.
Passengers can easily fall overboard, swim near the propeller,
or cause vessels to capsize. 3)
Designate a person aboard the
vessel to help you act as a lookout. 4) Carry the required safety
equipment such as fire extinguishers, sound signals, navigation lights, and life jackets for
every person on board.
Boat operators should inform
everyone on board where the
required safety equipment is
located. Operators should also
turn off the engine when the boat
is not moving to avoid propeller
injuries.
More information and additional life saving tips can be
found in boating safety courses
or at www.BoatResponsibly.com.
DBW enhances public access
to California’s waterways and
promotes boating and aquatic
safety through programs funded
by vessel registration fees, boating fuel tax dollars and boating facility construction loan
payments.

CARMICHAEL – As if delivering a full load of Saturday
mail was not enough, American
mail carriers went out to serve a
humanitarian cause on May 5.
The national Post Office food
drive gathered many million
tons of groceries for food banks
across America. “It was a long,
hard day, but so worth it to know
we were helping needy families,” said exhausted Carmichael
customer service manager Alicia
Leech. The 95608 zone’s 48 carriers and 15 volunteers toiled
from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. collecting, hauling and sorting over
26,000 pounds of non-perishables. These were dispatched to
the Sacramento Food Bank.
In days that followed, another
510 pounds rolled in to the Post
Office. Carmichael Presbyterian
Church’s food kitchen received
this overflow.
Final figures more than
doubled last year’s total, setting a Carmichael record for
the 20 years since the national
drive began. Leech explained
the unexpected bounty in a time
of recession: “the more people
experience need, the more willing they are to help when they
are able,” she said.
Of further assistance were the
millions of grocery sacks distributed nationwide a few days
before the collection. “There
was a friendly competition
between our carriers to see who
could collect the most from their
route,” said Leech. “Two carriers
got over 1000 pounds of groceries.” Gleaned from a Cameron
Ranch route, the winning score
was 1560 pounds.
Non-perishable food donations are still being accepted at
the Carmichael Post Office on
Fair Oaks Blvd.
Carmichael mail carriers recently pulled extra duty as part of America’s
largest food drive. Organized annually by postal workers, the collection
helps the needy via non-profit food distributors all over the nation.

Adult Mission Team Helps Rebuild in Joplin

Northminster Presbyterian
Church
CARMICHAEL – An Adult
Mission Team, 7 men and 6
women, from Northminster
Presbyterian Church spent a
week from April 14 through the
21st helping to rebuild a home in
Joplin, MO, destroyed after devastating tornadoes.
The team did all the sheetrocking, taping, mudding, sanding
and some wiring in the home
and also installed a complete
bathroom at another home.
In the last 5 years Northminster
teams, under the direction of the
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
program, have helped in rebuilding 15 homes, churches, and
businesses destroyed by flood
and storms in New Orleans,
Galveston, and Nashville.
Projects have included tiling
a church basement, installing
floorboarding, putting in windows, adding porches, and painting. The volunteers pay their own
way plus expenses. Rebuilding
structures and families are the
goals.

Pothole Sweeps
Week Project
Starts up in
Arden Arcade
SACRAMENTO COUNTY
– The Sacramento County
Department of Transportation
(SACDOT) has started up 2012
“Pothole Sweeps Week”, which
is an intensified effort to identify and repair potholes. This
project is part of continuous
efforts to improve preventative maintenance activities for
unincorporated area roadways.
Pothole sweeps are performed
twice each year: In late Spring
to repair potholes caused by
inclement weather, and in Fall to
ready road surfaces for the storm
season..
This County-wide effort will
begin in the Arden Arcade community, which is the center of
our service area, and continue
through the remainder of the
unincorporated area.
Work crews will begin
inspecting streets and fixing potholes on May 21st. Residents
are encouraged to contact
SACDOT concerning potholes
on neighborhood streets. Pothole
locations can be called into
Customer Service at 916-8755171, or emailed to www.sacdot.
com: Report a Problem.
There are over 5,200 lane
miles of paved roadways in the
County unincorporated area and
it’s inevitable that somewhere
in this large area of streets there
will be potholes. SACDOT’s policy is to: “Repair all potholes as
soon as possible.” The Pothole
Sweeps Week program enhances
ongoing pavement maintenance activities, which include
SACDOT crews who are sent
into the field Monday through
Friday each week to specifically
repair potholes.
Some facts about potholes in
Sacramento County:
• Potholes Reported To
Customer Service Annually
= 960.
• Potholes Repaired Annually
= 40,600.
• Potholes Repaired Per Month
= 3,384.
• Annual Cost for Pothole
Repair = $2.7 million.
• Square feet of potholes
repaired annually = 91,000.
• Repair Cost Per Square Foot
= $30.
• Repair cost per pothole = $66.
• Reported potholes are typically repaired within 72 hours.

Clearing surface weeds at the Effie Yeaw preserve pond, Mormon volunteers were praised

CARMICHAEL – If two heads are better
than one, 600 eager hands are better yet.
To perform a massive clean up, 300
Morman “Helping Hands” workers
recently descended on the Effie Yeaw
Nature Center. In one morning, 1200
volunteer hours were served.
Invasive weeds were cleared; an aviary roofed; a play facility built; stairs
rebuilt and barb-wire fencing removed.
Sorting men from the boys, a stalwart
team also waded waist deep in murk to
remove choking pond growth. Though the
Nature Center has staunch volunteers, the
Mormons were a miracle in numbers alone.
Approved American River Natural History
Association President David Wade, “They
achieved more in a day than we’d hope to
do in five years.”
A quarter-ton of slimy duck weed was
netted from Effie Yeaw’s eco-sensitive
pond and committed to compost heaps. An
annual problem, this fast-growing vegetation clogs the pond surface and denys light
to underwater residents.
Though veteran observers of much political muck-raking, visitors Supervisor Susan
Peters and Senator Ted Gaines found the
process absorbing. “Volunteerism is now
more important than ever,” nodded the
senator. The Mormons encourged others
he said, “to look around your community,
see what needs help and see how you can
assist. Our counties will be better for it and
so will you.”
Ranging from babies in back-packs
to high schoolers, children were a huge
accessory to to work teams. Explained
Carmichael Stake President Stephen Taylor;
“Being part of the project sets an example.
If our children only did a little, they still
knew they helped a big effort. They learn
there are responsibilities and opportunities
to serve. Helping your family sews the seed
of desire to be part of a community.”

To handle sudden and enormous wealth created by 19th Century gold
discoveries, Henry Wells and William Fargo created financial and express
transport services for California. Arriving in San Franscisco 160 years
ago, the New Yorkers established their first banks and offered armored
transport – gun toting stage coaches – to haul gold, cash and vital
mail across the Wild West. Wells Fargo staff recently invited Carmichael
Chamber of Commerce members to mark their anniversary. Chamber

Alcohol Ban keeps Parkway
Family Friendly
This Memorial Day weekend
there will be a complete ban on
alcohol consumption and possession both on land and in the
water within the American River
Connect with us on
Parkway between Hazel and
Watt avenues. An exception
exists for Ancil Hoffman Golf
Course.
In past years holiday weekends were major problems along
the river because of fights, public nudity, profanity and littering
fueled by excessive alcohol
consumption. The Board of
Supervisors restored decorum by
implementing the ban starting on
Labor Day weekend 2006 which
is also applicable for the holiday
weekends of Independence Day
as well as Memorial Day.
Since the restriction has taken
effect, families I have talked to
have expressed appreciation for
making these holiday weekends
once again a time for everyone
to enjoy the American River.
Reserve Park Ranger Program
Sacramento County Regional
Parks is creating its first volunteer Ranger Reserve program
to support the current Ranger
Patrol system. The Reserve
rangers would be sworn officers
capable of performing all ranger
duties, working with a Ranger or
independently.
Participants will either be
entry level candidates looking
to start a career in law enforcement or journey level officers
who are still active with other
law enforcement agencies or
who have retired. The Reserve
Rangers undergo the same training and background investigation
as regular Rangers, must be
graduates of a full police academy, and will complete the full
field training requirements. They
will be required to perform a
minimum of 15 hours of service
per month to maintain their status as a Reserve Ranger. Since
Park Rangers are accredited
Peace Officers, they will also
be required to fulfill the Peace
Officer Standards and Training
requirements.
The Reserve Ranger program is part of a coordinated
effort to maintain patrol services in the Park system, build
partnerships with other law
enforcement agencies such as
the cities of Sacramento and
Rancho Cordova, and deploy
Ranger Assistants to most effectively support the Rangers.

CARMICHAEL – A passage
in aviation and local civic history
was marked with the burial of Col
Ross Davidson last Tuesday. Aged
91, the WW II veteran died May
5. Military honors — including
rifle volleys, flag folding and Taps
– were in tune with approaching
Memorial Day commemorations.
A much decorated hero of the
European war theater, the pilot
also served his nation in Korea
and Viet Nam. He established his
family in Carmichael in the 1950s
and became a dedicated activist
for the emerging town.
Tributes flowed during a memorial service at East lawn Cemetery.
About 300 friends, including representatives of all local legislative offices, attended. The service
included a moving photo retrospective, with childhood, wartime and family images. He was
interred beside Micky Davidson,
his beloved wife of 58 years.
In the best tradition of
Davidson’s
fabled
generosity, a luncheon followed at
the Northridge Country Club.
Courtesy of an advanced deadline,
attendees shared a special funeral

Sacramento County DA Reports
Recent cases of interest
CASE: Sylvester Griffin (05/18/12)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Hilary Bagley Franzoia
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Sylvester Griffin was sentenced by the Honorable
Greta Curtis Fall to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Last month, Griffin was convicted by
jury of murder, rape, and first degree burglary in the 2009 killing of 64-year-old Alice Lynn Murphy.
Alice Murphy lived alone in a senior apartment complex in Folsom. Griffin was a driver for a medical
transport company and had a client that lived in the same complex. In December 2009, Murphy was
found dead in her apartment by a friend. She had been raped and smothered to death. DNA evidence
was collected at the crime scene. A match was found in the FBI’s DNA database, and the Folsom Police
Department was notified of Griffin’s identity. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Crime Lab
confirmed the match that linked Griffin to the crime scene.
CASE: Willie Weaver (05/16/12)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Aaron Miller, Vehicle Theft Unit
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Willie Weaver was convicted by jury of carjacking
and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
On April 14, 2011, Weaver exited the light rail train at the Florin Road station and walked to a nearby
Walgreens. Shortly after he arrived at Walgreens, the victim pulled her car into a parking space in front
of the store. Weaver approached her on foot and demanded her car keys. A short struggle ensued before
Weaver forced the victim’s keys from her hand, pushed her to the ground, and drove off with her car.
A few hours later, officers located her car parked in the area of North C and Ahern Street. Inside the
car was a bag that Weaver was wearing over his shoulder during the carjacking. The bag contained a
sawed-off shotgun and clothing matching the description of clothing worn by the carjacker. The District
Attorney’s Crime Lab conducted DNA testing on a beanie and a jacket found inside the bag. A match in
the national DNA database of criminal offenders (CODIS) identified Weaver as the suspect. He was also
identified by two witnesses using still photos captured from light rail surveillance footage.
Sentencing is set for June 15, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in Department 33 in front of the Honorable Lloyd G.
Connelly.
CASE: Jimmy Phi Nguyen & Alan Sayareh (05/10/12)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Doug Whaley
Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that charges have been filed against
1 Ozone Smog technicians Jimmy Phi Nguyen and Alan Sayareh. Both defendants are charged with
felony conspiracy to provide false information to DMV, and four counts of providing false information
to DMV. Nguyen has an additional eight charges of reporting false information on DMV documents.
Investigators from the Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau of Automotive Repair found that
vehicles were illegally passed on smog check inspections at the 1 Ozone Smog station on Power Inn
Road where Nguyen was employed. Surveillance showed the defendants utilizing their own vehicles
to perform smog certifications on different vehicles. A search warrant was served at the 1 Ozone Smog
Shop today, and among the items seized were the smog testing equipment known as an Emission
Inspection Machine, and vehicles used in the commission of the offenses.
The records from smog tests are sent directly via the smog testing computer to DMV, which DMV
relies on to issue vehicle registrations. The defendant’s scheme allowed vehicles that could not pass
emissions testing to be registered illegally.
Bail for each defendant was set by the court at $50,000. Arraignment is scheduled for May 14, 2012 at
8:30 a.m. in Department 62.

SACRAMENTO - Memorial
Day is a time to honor those who
serve and remember those who
have died in war. Sadly, it has
also become a key opportunity
for scammers to target those who
are serving or have served their
nation, especially elderly veterans. BBB is urging consumers
and donors to be on the lookout
for deals that seem too good to
be true, and for disreputable
charities.
“The unique lifestyle of our
service members makes them
prime targets for scammers,” said
Gary Almond, president of BBB
serving Northeast California.
“It’s imperative that we educate
our service members and ensure
that the support we give to them
equals the effort they make every
day on behalf of us.” Almond
said scams can include those that
target service personnel and their
families directly, but also those
that appear to be helping military
members via charities.
“Donors need to watch out
for questionable charities that
raise funds on behalf of military
organizations,” adds Art Taylor,
President and CEO of the BBB
Wise Giving Alliance. “When
you make a donation, always
check www.give.org to see that
the group meets BBB charity
standards, especially around
Memorial Day. Too many solicitors that fail to meet BBB standards call and say they help
veterans, service members or
their families, and little of the
money donated will serve that
purpose.”
Among the scams to watch out
for:
• Posing as the Veterans
Administration to convince veterans they need to update their
credit card, bank or other financial records with the VA;
• Charging service members for
services they could get for free or
less expensively elsewhere, such
as military records and benefit
filing assistance;
• Offering “instant approval”
military loans (“no credit
check,” “all ranks approved”)
that can have high interest rates
and hidden fees;
• Advertising housing online
with military discounts and
incentives, and then bilking service personnel out of the security
deposit;
• Trying to sell things like
security systems to spouses of
deployed military personnel
by saying the service member
ordered it to protect his or her
family;
• Selling stolen vehicles at low
prices by claiming to be soldiers
who need to sell fast because
they’ve been deployed;
• Posing as government contractors recruiting veterans
and then asking for a copy of
the job applicants’ passport
(which contains a lot of personal
information);
• Posing on online dating services as a lonely service member in a remote part of Iraq or
Afghanistan, and then asking
for money to be wired to a third
party for some emergency.
BBB advises service members,
veterans and all consumers never
to give personal identification
information (Social Security,
bank account, military identification or credit card numbers, etc.)
to anyone who contacts you by
phone or e-mail, and to be wary
of any solicitations that involve
purchasing something or transferring money. Consumers can
check out businesses and charities for free at www.bbb.org.

For Solution See Page 7
Dear Tim,
When it comes to 15-yearolds, as a parent you have every
right to say, “My food, and my
roof. You do what I say.” With
kids this age you never know
what you’re getting. Half the
time you’re talking to a 35-yearold, and the other half they’re 5
again.
At that age, I think you let
them do, or not do, these things
based on their ability to perform
well in life. To the extent they
behave and show some sense,
you lengthen then rope and give
them more freedom and privileges. If they act like doofuses,
you shorten the rope. Remember,
no is a complete sentence. Can
you tell I’ve raised teenagers?
If it were my son, I’d sit him
down and gently explain that
he doesn’t have the capacity or
knowledge to manage this idea
by himself just yet. You wouldn’t
turn your child lose behind the
wheel of a car the moment they
wanted to drive, right? So make
yourself a part of the experience
by teaching him to handle money
wisely. Then, as he matures in
financial understanding, you can
give him more leeway.
If he wants to go dramatic
on you, let him. And remind
him that for every minute he’s
in drama mode, that’s less leeway he’s getting in this matter
and every other one in his life.
In other words, the more mature
you act, son, the better your existence is going to be.
No, at 15 he’s not opening a
checking account on his own.
- Dave
The Point of Life Insurance
Dear Dave,
I have a 20-year level term
life insurance policy. I noticed
the other day that the cost would
increase to $4,000 per year at the
end of the term. Is that because
it’s the end of the policy coverage or something else?
- Tate
Dear Tate,
Technically, the policy will
expire at the end of the term. But
most companies that sell term
life insurance will let you renew
it, if you can’t get any other
insurance, at a ridiculously high
rate. But let’s face it, 20 years
down the road your probability of death has also increased.
The older you are, statistically
speaking, the more likely you
are to die.
If it were me, and I’m near
the end of that policy, I’d go buy
another 20-year level term policy, and let the old one run out.
The only time you might run
into trouble with a policy like
that is if you were in the last year
of coverage, and were diagnosed
with a terminal illness. Then
you’re really going to be paying
through the nose to keep your
coverage intact.
But the real point of a 20-year
level term policy is to ensure that
your family is taken care of while
the kids are at home and your
mortgage is covered if you die
prematurely. If you follow my
plan, you’ll have $500,000 to $1
million your retirement account
when the policy runs out and the
kids are gone. Plus, you’ll have
taken a 15-year mortgage, and
your house will be paid off too.
If something happens then, your
spouse will be okay financially.
The further along in life you
get, assuming you do the stuff I
teach, the less need you’ll have
for life insurance!

“Hey Dad, Don’t Blink”
By Paul V. Scholl
You are a child of the
Universe, no less than the trees
and the stars, you have a right
to be here. And whether or not
it is clear to you, no doubt the
Universe is unfolding as it
should. – Desiderata
They say “It goes really fast”
when you have children. Faster
than anyone can even imagine.
My son, Gabriel, is now 18 and
heading to college. Wasn’t it
just yesterday…?
We spent many hours driving
when he was very little from the
East Bay to the Sacramento area
when he came up to stay with
me a couple times each month.
We would spend some of time
learning math. “2 plus 2 is 4. 4
plus 4 is 8. 8 plus 8 is 16. 16
plus 16 is 32…16,384 plus…
Dad, that number’s too big for
me right now.”
I remember two times when
he said something to me that
was truly stunning. Once, when
he was about four, he said
“Dad, this time, I’m the boy and
you’re the Dad.” Silence. He
leaned over and went to sleep.
He really did get it.
Another time, as he was looking out the window and studying the clouds. He looked over
at me, touched my hand with his
and said “Dad, God’s a hand. He
just holds you.” Again, silence.
And he leaned back and went to
sleep.
How many times can you
watch Lion King? I would
watch it a hundred times more
for one more Saturday morning
on the couch together.
Celebrating the Fourth of July and my birthday together with family and friends. One of our best patriotic photos ever.
There was one particular play
that was above all the rest. He
was catching in an All-Star
game, and it was close. There
was a runner on third, then
the pitcher threw a wild pitch
that bounced off to the right
Holding Gabriel for the very first time. Life changes now.
When he asked me once how
much I loved him, spreading
my arms wide didn’t seem like
enough. I looked up to the moon
and said “I love you to the moon
and back Gabe.” He said “I love
you to the moon and back Dad.”
We repeated that many times
over the years.
The importance of being there
for his first baseball game, his
towards the backstop. Gabe
bolted towards the ball, sliding
to it as it closed in on the fence.
He grabbed it bare handed and
instinctively turned and tossed
it perfectly to the pitcher covering home right where he didn’t
even have to move to tag the
runner out. Pure instinct at the
perfect time. Wow.
One-on-one instruction about the Spirit of baseball.
first t-ball hit, being able to help
coach for the first few years,
will live in my heart as one of
the best decisions I’ve made.
Looking back, I can’t imagine
doing it differently.
He played basketball too.
He once had a big game that
opened his coach’s eyes a bit.
His team had a few players hurt,
so he got more than his regular
playing time. He walked away
with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
“Blowing Kisses” to grandma during one of our many visits.
He played a bit more after that
one.
Another moment that thrilled
this dad’s heart was when he
was playing linebacker on the
high school football team. Goal
line stand, and here comes the
running back, and he just drilled
him and drove him back, saving
the touchdown. Now that was
fun to watch!
His dream though was to be
a big league baseball player.
One summer we took “The
great baseball road trip” which
included seeing games in St.
Louis at the old ballpark before
it was torn down, Kansas City,
and Denver. We saw the Royals,
the Blue Jays, the White Sox, the
Mets, the Rockies, the Cardinals,
the Cubs, the Brewers and the
Phillies all in a 10-day span in
three different ballparks. We
went with my wife Trish, who
was also a big baseball fan, and
they were a total blast together.
This was the “maximum exposure” trip to big league baseball
outside of the Bay Area, which
was all he had known about it
at that time. If you are going to
dream big, learn big.
The day I heard that they
were officially closing the old
Yankee Stadium I decided I
would make sure he had the
chance to see it before it closed.
We were able to make the trip
out for almost a week, getting to
see four games, a sweep of the
Minnesota Twins.
He learned a lot about baseball
fans that week. He also learned
a lot about the real heart and
soul of the game. It just warmed
my heart when he leaned over
to me during the first game and
said “Dad, I think I’m a Yankees
fan.”
During our trip to New York
City we visited the Metropolitan
Museum, Central Park, Ground
Zero, the Bethesda fountain, the
top of the Empire State Building
and ran up Broadway in the
rain. I showed him where I used
to live on the Upper East Side,
and one of my favorite places
in the world, the East River at
John Finley Walk.
We also went out to the
Statue of Liberty, just taking it
all in. We visited the museums
there and were enthralled by the
history lessons. We even found
family names engraved in the
monument of those who had
passed through as immigrants
decades ago. It was a great
father-son trip.
When he returned to
Manhattan later with his class
on a school performance trip he
was the one showing everybody
else about the Big Apple.
High School JV baseball
proved a little bit different
world. He found favorites do
get played more, and there is
such a thing as politics. After
his first year the dream had
soured, never getting to play the
position he truly loved.
After his last game, which I
was surely not going to miss,
it was the end of a dream. And
not only his. It wasn’t about his
ever “making it”, it was about
the journey together, the learning, the pep talks when he had
a bad game, the strategies, the
teaching. After we talked and
hugged and he had to go on his
way, I remember getting back to
my car and having a good cry.
Something big was over.
We took a trip up the
California coast one weekend
to Fort Bragg. I took him out
to a great little first-class restaurant in town and taught him
how to act properly when out
on a date with a young lady. I
let the waitress know what we
were there for, and she joined
in with a couple of tips of her
own. She even had the cook, the
long-time owner, come out and
introduce himself and add his
personal touch.
Later that trip we visited my
favorite beach for the day. He
went for a long and solitude
walk while I just hung back
and took time to write. It was a
great example of how we could
be together, yet enjoy our own
space.
Over the years we loved to go
to movies together, seeing many
of the big movies when they
came out. We also saw plenty
of duds. I remember seeing
one, one of the big “animated”
movies that was so bad, we got
up and left before the halfway
point. That’s when I taught him
how to get your money back for
really bad entertainment. Funny
thing, he later worked at the
same movie theatre.
This last year he worked two
jobs to save up enough money
to buy his own car, while taking on AP classes and aiming for college. We visited a
few lots one week and talked
about deciding just what kind
of car he was looking for to
get him around town. He did
the research, found the car, and
made the deal. Then he learned
about used car repairs.
When my wife Trish passed
away suddenly in 2009, he was so
supportive and strong. They had
their own special relationship,
and we both shared a loss that
I’ve yet to figure out. As we both
have learned, life does go on.
He served as my best man,
twice. There really was no
other choice for me. He is my
strongest bond on this planet,
my reason for doing so many
things.
I was so very proud of the
toast he gave when I married
Gwen a year ago January. He
displayed his maturity and grace
in a way that not many others
in the room had noticed before.
Compliments were many.
He graduates in just a few
short days. Then it is off to USF
disagree, I always let him know
how important it is to come up
with his own conclusions and
that life itself will teach him
whether he is right or wrong or
somewhere in between.
He also hears that what might
be right right now for him could
be very wrong later in life. What
is important is to be aware in
life, and to act accordingly. He
knows that it is about always
trying to do the right thing,
even if it doesn’t seem to turn
out that way.
This page is written to honor
a job well done by my son, for
his diligence towards school
and his grades, to working and
practicing hard, to his willingness to make and keep good
friends, and to his being a wonderful son.
It is also written for all those
divorced and separated dads that
may not know what to do with
their kids through all the pain of
their own broken relationship.
Get over or around it enough to
nurture your children the best
you can. Do what you can to
participate, even if it means just
being there to watch the game,
the play, the dance, the speech.
Being there always matters.
All the struggles, financial
or otherwise, will pale in their
significance over the years to
the memories your children will
hold of your participation. My
son knows the path we’ve taken
together, and now he’s find-
“Dad, I think I’m a Yankees fan” during our visit to old
Yankee Stadium
To the Best Best Man a father could have on wedding day.
and the rest of his life. I remember the first time I held him. I
remember holding his hand on
the first day of school. I remember how excited he was when he
declared his independence from
diapers. He said “No Dad, I’ll
do it myself. I want my privateseat.”
It has been both a joy and
sometimes a pain watching him
grow his independence. More
than just the normal teenage
“I know everything” attitude,
he’s developed a side that he
really does take much more
into consideration when making decisions. When we differ
on our opinions and we agree to
ing his own path. If life ended
today, knowing that, I would be
OK with it.
Gabriel has his own relationship with God. He has a good
foundation. He is defining what
he believes in. He has all the
tools to be a success. I do not
know if I am capable of loving
any other human being more
than I love my son Gabriel.
And I am proud to know
that when the day comes, he
will understand fully just what
it means when his son says
“Hey Dad, Don’t Blink”.
“I love you to the moon
and back Gabe.” - Dad
One our trip to Fort Bragg. Another great Father-Son trip alone.

Covey, along with co-authors
Chris McChesney and Jim
Huling, have put together “The
4 Disciplines of Execution”
to change your behavior and
achieve your wildly important goals. I had Chris on my
POPPOFF Radio Show and he
led me through these disciplines.
So put aside your old ideas and
get ready for some new ones.
Here is the capsulated version
right from their book.
1) Focus on the Wildly Important. Basically, the more you
try to do, the less you actually
accomplish. This is a stark, inescapable principle that we all live
with. Somewhere along the way,
most leaders forget this. Why?
Because smart, ambitious leaders don’t want to do less, they
want to do more, even when they
know better. Isn’t it really difficult for you to say no to a good
idea, much less a great one? And
yet, there will always be more
good ideas than you and your
teams have the capacity to execute. So, Discipline 1 requires
you to start by selecting one, or at
the most, two extremely important goals, instead of trying to
significantly improve everything
all at once. Failure to achieve it
will make every other accomplishment seem secondary, or
possibly even inconsequential.
2) Act on the Lead Measures.
This is the discipline of leverage. It’s based on the simple
principle that all actions are not
created equal. Whatever strategy
you’re pursuing, your progress
and success will be based on
two kinds of measures: lag and
lead. Lag measures are the tracking measurements of the wildly
important goal, and they are usually the ones you spend most of
your time praying over. Revenue,
profit, and market share are all
lag measures, meaning when
you receive them, the performance that drove them is already
in the past. Lead measures are
quite different in that they are
the measures of the most highimpact things you must do to
reach the goal. Once you have
identified your lead measures,
they become the key leverage
points for achieving your goal.
3) Keep a compelling Scoreboard. People play differently
when they’re keeping score. This
is the discipline of engagement.
In principle, the highest level
of performance always comes
from people who are emotionally engaged and the highest
level of engagement comes
from knowing the score…that
is, if people know whether they
are winning or losing. And you
must know the scoreboard. If the
scoreboard isn’t clear, the game
you want people to play will be
abandoned in the whirlwind of
other activities.
4) Create A Cadence of Accountability. This is where execution really happens. The first
3 disciplines set up the game,
but number four is based on
the principle of accountability: that unless we consistently
hold each other accountable,
the goal naturally disintegrates
in the whirlwind. The secret
to Discipline 4, in addition
to repeated cadence, is that
members create their own commitments. Because they make
their own commitments, their
ownership of them increases.
This is a very condensed version of what “The 4 Disciplines
of Execution” is all about. The
good thing is when I asked Chris
if this works for team participation or for single achievement,
he told me absolutely for both. If
you want more info on what these
disciplines are all about, you can
check out www.4DXBook.com.
Press on. Now it’s all up to you.
It begins with you and it ends
with you and your desire to succeed. But know you can make it
happen!
