Introduction
This brochure seeks to explain important developments
in the European battery market and how the Tungstone
range has been improved and developed, to deal with such
changes and new opportunities.
Modern vehicles put huge demands on the battery,
often meaning that the battery must power the
vehicle whilst the engine is ‘off’. This has accelerated
the EU’s determination to hit targets and reduce the
amount of CO2 emissions produced by cars as the
industry accounts for approximately 12% of the
total CO2 emissions produced.

Hybrid Technology
Hybrid describes the simultaneous presence of two engines; an internal combustion engine (Petrol
or Diesel) and an electric one. There are different hybrid levels dependant upon the ‘make-up’ of the
vehicles and its capacity to reduce CO2.

Micro-Hybrid technology is, at present, the most
relevant and is also known as Start/Stop as it
can be utilised to start the engine with the press
of the clutch and stop the engine when idling
whilst ensuring power is still supplied to all other
electrical devices when the engine is ‘off’.
The NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) is used
by all manufacturers to calculate CO2 emissions
and fuel consumption. On the standard Start/
Stop cars, by utilising ECM (Enhanced Cyclic
Mat) technology, savings of 3-6% are realised. On
larger, more sophisticated vehicles where Brake
Energy Regeneration equipment is often fitted

emissions by around 8%.

Hybrid Technology
The threat of global warming has focussed the world on the need to reduce emissions and conserve fuel.
The EU has introduced regulations to reduce CO2 emissions on new cars to an average of 130gr/KM by
2012. This was a massive challenge to the OE car and battery producer. The first step solution is known as
Micro Hybrid, (Start/Stop) and forecasts suggest that 70% of new European vehicles will be equipped with
this Start/Stop function by 2015. This development means new batteries for the future.

Tungstone Batteries are produced on the same production lines that make batteries for Original
Equipment, using the same technology, man power, equipment, controls and quality inspections
approved by the car manufacturers to whom they are supplied.

Recyclable
Tungstone batteries are at least 97% recyclable. The material recovered from the battery is used
in washing detergents, children’s playgrounds or smelted to make lead for new batteries. Only the
labels and polypropylene separators are disposed of.

Start/Stop
When engaged, the Start/Stop function automatically switches the engine off and restarts it when
the clutch pedal is pressed or, in the case of an automatic, when the accelerator is pressed.

The CO2 savers are batteries developed to decrease CO2 emission, and increase fuel efficiency, on
all vehicles fitted with the new technology.
BER (Brake Energy
Regeneration)
Brake Energy Regeneration develops during deceleration or braking. The energy produced by the
movement of the vehicle is retrieved and stored in the battery, which reduces the engine work load
and decreases energy consumption.

ECM (Enhanced Cyclic Mat), also known
as AFB (Advanced Flooded Battery) or
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery), is an
evolution of the traditional lead-acid
battery that has been designed to meet
the requirements of the new Start/Stop
Micro-Hybrid compact vehicles that have
entered the market.
PLEASE NOTE this range is specifically
manufactured to be installed on Micro-Hybrid
vehicles that DO NOT have the regenerative
braking system.

The main distinguishing feature of the
AGM battery is the ‘Gas Recombination’
technology it utilises. This process
keeps any Oxygen & Hydrogen that may
have escaped from a standard leadacid battery within the AGM battery
throughout the charging cycle.
The Start/Stop ECM is a reliable power source that supplies all ancillary
equipment, including all ‘in car electrical loads’, even when the engine is in
an idle/off position and offers twice the cyclic capability of standard wet
flooded batteries.
Please note you can replace ECM batteries with ECM (AFB/
EFB) or AGM batteries only.

As the Micro-Hybrid technology continues to improve, we
will see further developments in the ECM battery. This new
technology will be known as the ECM+. The benefit with
the new ECM+ will be increased performance, through
a higher number of cycles, as well as an increased CCA

Further Advancements – AGM HT
Due to increased demands from certain markets and
vehicles, a second generation AGM battery is also being
developed. This is known as the AGM HT (Heat Tolerant)
battery. Research has shown that standard AGM batteries
performance levels dipped slightly when operated
constantly in hot climates or where the battery is fitted
under the bonnet, in the ‘engine room’, again where
temperatures are high. The AGM HT will overcome these
operational issues.
