TUCSON TRAGEDY THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC • M O N D AY , J A N U A R Y 1 7 , 2 0 1 1 Shooting inspires peace walk By Dennis Wagner The Arizona Republic via Facebook postings until it also was broadcast by local news media. Hutchison said a local minister delivered a prayer before the crowd marched 2.2 miles to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ office. The mood was upbeat and non-political. Some walkers sang. Others talked about the senseless violence, the acts of heroism among victims, and the community’s response. “One lady had a sign that said ‘Free Hugs,’ ” noted Hutchison’s mother, Suzan Davis. “And people were hugging her.” The walk ended at a memorial shrine created in front of the congresswoman’s office, where some cried quietly during a moment of silence. Nearby, a street vendor was selling hot dogs for $3. A sign noted that $1 from each purchase would go to a victims fund. The sign advocated peace, adding, TUCSON — The shooting rampage near Tucson has had a profound impact on the city, inspiring public memorials in front yards and prompting unlikely activism. Amanda Hutchison, 20, said she has never voted and had never been involved in civil leadership until Sunday, when she organized Walk for Peace in the Old Pueblo with her friend Amanda Lopez. “We were hoping for maybe 100 people,” Hutchison said. “But there were over 400. It turned out really big.” Hutchison said she used to shop at the Safeway store where the shootings occurred Jan. 8 and felt compelled to express her feelings: “Something just touched me about this.” Hutchison and Lopez had to obtain a permit and put up $250 for a $1 million insurance bond for the event. They distributed CARLOS CHAVEZ/THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC fliers and, almost immedi- Walk for Peace, which drew about 400 people, ended at a ately, word began to spread memorial outside the office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Stoddard remembered as hero for saving wife By Art Thomason TUCSON — Friends and loved ones remembered Dorwan Stoddard as a man who lived his life the same way he left it: as a hero. “Before CNN ever heard the name Dorwan Stoddard, he was already a hero,” the Rev. Mike Nowak, pastor of Mountain Avenue Church of Christ, told more than 400 people who gathered Sunday at Calvary Chapel for Stoddard’s funeral. Stoddard, 76, was one of six killed Jan. 8 at U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress on Your Corner” event. Dorwan’s “final demonstration of love” was to sacrifice his life for the woman he loved, according to the program distributed at the service. He told his wife, Mavy, to lie on the ground, and he shielded her with his body as a gunman opened fire. Mavy was shot in the legs and was released from the hospital last week. Nowak said that “Dory,” as friends called him, lived a life as a hero to his wife, his family, to friends and many others through his unselfish acts. His acts on that day were without second thought.” The Arizona Republic Dorwan Stoddard Dale Stoddard A son of shooting victim Dorwan Stoddard Those who spoke about Dorwan described a man who spent countless hours repairing the church where he and Mavy attended services. The couple ran Mountain Avenue Church of Christ’s benevolence ministry, helping church members who were having a difficult time. Sunday’s ceremony drew more than Stoddard’s family and friends. People who had not known the man came to pay their respects. “It was restoring,” said Ron DeWitt, a retired public-school teacher and principal who had met Stoddard only once. Stoddard was an avid angler, and his boat, filled with white flowers, stood in place of a casket in the front of Calvary Chapel. Dorwan’s four sons spoke about their dad’s passions: family and fishing. “Guys like my father are rare,” said Dale Stoddard, his second-born son. “His acts on that day were without second thought.” Another son, James, said that his dad “provided like no other.” A construction worker from 1954 to 1988, Dorwan often took his sons to construction sites. A year after his first wife, Arlene, died, Dorwan married Mavanell “Mavy” McDaniel Terry, his “former sixth-grade sweetheart.” They traveled across the country in their RV with Tux, Dorwan’s beloved dog. Speaking from a wheelchair, Mavy Dorwan recalled her husband. The Los Angeles Times quoted her as saying, “He made me a better person. He made me kinder. He made me know there are good men.” She added: “He spoiled me rotten. And, oh gosh, it was fun.” New Mesa Dental Center “Gabby Opened Her Eyes, So Should You.” Beyond the news coverage, memorial shrines and funerals, there are smaller signs of public sentiment throughout Tucson. Karen Munyon, 59, has wrapped signs around a saguaro in her front yard just a few blocks from the shooting suspect’s home. “Stay Strong Gabrielle,” says one. “It just touched us,” Munyon said of the tragedy. “We had to do something.” 480.396.9900 David Chiang, DDS 1423 S.
