Fall 2012 SGIG Gilbert S. "Gil" Reddings, is a member of John W. Kirby Consistory #40, Hampton, Virginia, whose Masonic journey extends from Entered Apprentice in 1967 to Grand Treasurer-‐General "Emeritus" of the United Supreme Council, in 2012. A long-‐time member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton, Virginia, where he served as Deacon, Trustee and Church Security, Illustrious Reddings' life has been one of service to God, his country, Prince Hall Masonry and his family. Gilbert was born in Brunswick, Georgia. He is married to Eunice Reddings and has two adult sons, L. Keith and Stanley. He has a B.A. in Human Resources Administration, an A.A.S. in Management and is a graduate of Auditor's Intern School, San Bernardino, California. Equipped with this training, as well as other professional development courses, Gilbert aspired to challenging assignments in fiscal management that culminated in service as Imperial Treasurer, A.E.A.O.N.M.S., and as Grand Treasurer-‐General, Holy Empire. Beginning his Masonic pilgrimage at the age of 22, Gilbert was made a Master Mason in Jerusalem Lodge #100, Tampa, Florida. During the ensuing 45 years, he held membership in Lodges in Florida, California, Colorado, New York, Virginia and Oklahoma. In addition to chairing or working on numerous committees on auditing, budgeting, finance and investments, he also held key leadership positions as Worshipful Master, Worthy Patron, Illustrious Potentate and Director of several Prince Hall Shrine Departments. At present, he is a member of the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Louisiana, F&A.M., where he serves as Deputy-‐at-‐Large for all Masonic Districts. Illustrious Reddings is also an Honorary Past Grand Master of the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Oklahoma, the M.W.P.H.G.L. of North Carolina and the M.W.P.H.G.L. of South Carolina. He served as Imperial Treasurer of the A.E.A.O.N.M.S. from 1991 to 2010 and holds honorary membership in several Prince Hall Shrine organizations, including Dulkaada Temple #226 in Italy. As a Scottish Rite Mason, Illustrious Reddings served as First Lieutenant Commander of Cosmopolitan Consistory #291 in California. He was elevated to Grand Inspector General, 33° in 1985, coroneted as Sovereign Grand Inspector General "Emeritus" in 1996 and then as Sovereign Grand Inspector General "Active" in October 2000. In 2006, he was elected as Grand Treasurer-‐General, H.E., where he served until October 2012. Illustrious Reddings is recipient of the Gold Medal, the highest award for his service in the Supreme Council and he was bestowed the distinctive title of Grand Treasurer-‐General "Emeritus." In life's ministries, Illustrious Reddings performed community service in the Jaycees, the United Negro College Fund, Social Advocates of Youth, National Association of Parliamentarians, Virginia Association of Parliamentarians, Public Housing and Equal Opportunity Committee, Virginia Association of Real Estate Brokers, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Peninsula and the Fish Bowl Shrine Classics, Inc. Additionally, he held membership and performed service in the American Society of Military Comptrollers, Toastmasters International, the Institute of Internal Auditors, Electronic Data Processing Auditors Association, Accountants for the Public Interest and Financial Counselor with the Air Force Financial Program. During 24 years active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Illustrious Reddings distinguished himself with exemplary performance in the Comptroller career field. He was cited for saving the U.S. Air Force over 1 million dollars while serving as a Senior Auditor with the Air Force Audit Agency. He was also selected, as the Top Enlisted Auditor of the Year in 1978 and in 1979 was one of twelve Outstanding Airmen of the Year in a competition of more than 480,000 contemporaries. In 1987, Illustrious Reddings retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant E-‐9. His military decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon with onebronze service star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and several other awards and citations. Displaying admirable standards of ethics, Illustrious Reddings attributes his success to principles of honesty, integrity, loyalty and faith. One of the philosophical clichés by which his actions are tempered is the following quotation from an unknown author: "He who loses money, loses much; he who loses a friend loses more; but he who loses courage, loses all." Such is the life of SGIG Gilbert S. Reddings, 33°, and the standards by which he earned the title of Grand Treasurer-‐General "Emeritus", H.E. HISTORY OF THE COMMANDERS OF THE RITE 33° A.A.S.R. ³7+(*/25<2)7+(6&277,6+5,7(´ The Scottish Rite as an experience has a capacity to make its members lives more rich and meaningful. The consistent theme of the degrees is that the individual has within himself the spiritual capacity to overcome adversity and achieve great success. It describes the basic problem of humanity as that of being held back from such success by the confusion and disorientation of materialism. The Scottish Rite is not, therefore, just a good organization which does good works;; it is a great brotherhood of initiates dedicated to the higher spiritual values of civilization. In its capacity to transform human lives, the Scottish Rite is the handmaiden of religion: not a religion itself. ,WKDVGLVWLOOHGPDQ\RIWKHHVVHQWLDOHOHPHQWVRIWKHZRUOG¶VJUHDWOLYLQJIDLWKVLQWRDFDUHIXO

from left) GIG Clarence E. Williams- Chaplain The Virginia Commanders of the Rite 33rd Degree was organized June 15, 1969. It was conceived in June 1968, by a group of Thirty-‐Third Degree Masons who were attending the Annual Session of the Virginia Council of Deliberation at Holiday Inn Scope, Norfolk, Virginia; and was organized at Virginia State College during the annual session in 1969. Petersburg Consistory #144 hosted that annual session with Sublime Prince Willie F. Little as Commander-‐In-‐Chief. During this annual convocation, Petersburg Assembly #144, Order of the Golden Circle was also organized, adding to the significance of this monumental session. Loyal Lady Ruth Brown was elected to serve as its first Loyal Lady Ruler, under the stewardship of SGIG David L. Muckle as Deputy of the Orient. History informs us that during this meeting at Virginia State College, which is now known as Virginia State University, Ettrick, Virginia, there appeared seventeen (17) Grand Inspectors General who expressed a burning desire to organize this fraternal group of peers, styled COMMANDERS OF THE RITE of VIRGINIA. In his capacity as Deputy of the Orient, SGIG David L. Muckle #9 called the meeting to order while GIG Milton Keeling recorded the proceedings. The charter members of June 1969 are as follows: GIG William W. Pierce, 33º, #22; GIG John Powell, 33º, #9; GIG Thomas Bradley, 33º, #9; GIG Andrew J. Smith, 33º, #40; SGIG David L. Tolbert, 33° -‐ Chaplain The purpose of this club was to promote fraternity among the Peers and to pay respects to their loved ones during the last weekend in October each year. These public celebrations are held in a social setting and, by virtue of the wide appeal they generate, they have been expanded to include the loved ones of all Scottish Rite Masons.
