Willkommen! Welcome!
We have compiled a variety of fun
activites - helping you to make new
friends, see the city and enjoy your stay
here in Bremen.
Dear International Exchange Students,
We would like to extend a warm welcome to you
at Bremen City University of Applied Sciences.
We have put together a special activity
programme for you. It goes beyond your course
work experience so that you may become more
acquainted with Bremen and the region and learn
more about life in Germany and German culture.
We hope that this activity programme will
contribute to make your stay with us a most
successful, enjoyable and memorable experience.
We look forward to seeing you at the various
events and activities and, please, make certain
that you register in time.
Compiled by our staff at the International Office
and the Office of International Relations and Business Contacts (ZIBP) at the School of International Business, as well as the Local Erasmus Group
(LEI) of students.
This brochure provides you with an overview on
the planned activities and events and also on our
Buddy and Adopt-a-Student programmes. The
activity programme is, in part, being funded by
the university.
Best wishes,
The Team of the International Office and the ZIBP

Out and About
The Buddy and
Adopt-a-Student
Programmes
The Buddy Programme
The Student-Buddy Programme was launched by
the International Office as a peer-to-peer student
support to provide incoming exchange students
with a direct contact person where they can
easily and quickly get essential information and
help in adjusting to their new environment in
Bremen. Every international student will be
assigned a so-called “Buddy”, i.e. a German
student who is familiar with the university‘s
system and who can give you a helping hand
during your stay abroad in Germany.

The Adopt-a-Student Programme
If you would like to learn even more about everyday life in Germany and have the opportunity to
actually get to know a German family and visit a
home in Germany, you should participate in the
Adopt-a-Student programme. The university has
a list of families and individuals who have
volunteered to serve as host families to our
international exchange students, to give insight
into their private lives and spend leisure time
with them. This programme is an excellent
opportunity to have an authentic cultural
experience in Germany, to meet new people and,
above all, to practise and improve your German
language skills.

ZIBP Activities
Would you like to learn
about German culture
and have fun with
students from all over
the world in your free
time?
Come with us to get to
know new places and
people in Bremen and
other parts of Northern
Germany!
City Walk of Bremen
For all early birds, we welcome you on our guided
city walk through the ancient city of Bremen.
Find out more about your new „home town“
Bremen, its buildings, history and people. At the
same time this is a possibility to meet and get
to know your fellow students at the beginning
of your stay. The walk will take approximatly 2
hours.
Mercedes Assembly Plant
Do not miss this exclusive tour of the
assembly plant of one of Germany’s biggest car
makers, Mercedes Benz. You will have the
opportunity to see the assembly line of
Mercedes car models like the SL, the SLK or the
T- model. Join us to get a unique look at stateof-the-art world class car production.
Minigolf in the Dark
We challenge you to a game of indoor minigolf
in blacklight. This is a very special and different
event with a lot of fun. Join and beat us! We meet
directly at the indoor minigolf site. Please be on
time.
Day Trip to the Mountain Area Harz
Come and join us on a day trip to the picturesque
mountain area Harz to discover the (hopefully)
snowy landscape. The area in the middle of
Germany is well known as a skiarea and we can
try our skills on downhill sledging. The sledging
run at the Wurmberg in Braunlage with a total
length of 1.6 km is one of the longest in the
Harz. Slides can be rented there. After this active
outdoor experience in the snow we will visit
the Christmas Market in Goslar. While walking
through narrow alleys, you will smell the roasted
almonds and mulled wine and can find and buy
all kind of Christmas accessories.
Do not forget to bring warm clothes and shoes
and please take your semester tickets for the
train ride.
Ballet Swan Lake (Schwanensee) in Bremen
We will go to Bremen´s Musical Theatre to see
the famous ballet, which was composed by Pyotr
Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-76. The scenario in the
ballet, initially in two acts, was fashioned from
Russion folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a
princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer´s
curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Risinger.
Miniatur Wonderland in Hamburg
Welcome to join a guided tour through the
Miniatur Wonderland in Hamburg with us. You
will see and learn about the largest model railway
in the world, and one of the most successful
permanent exhibitions in Northern Germany.
Make sure you do not miss classes, as we leave
early on Friday for this trip to Hamburg.
Please take your semester tickets.

Universum Science Centre - Tickets
The Universum Science Centre, next to the University of Bremen, is a unique hands-on museum
where visitors can explore the realms of human
existence, our planet and the cosmos. The
Entdecker (Discovery) Park features 25 hands-on
interactive display stations on the theme of
movement, as well as the 27-metre high
tower „Turm der Lüfte“, with amazing experiments
on wind and weather. Altogether there are around
200 inter-active exhibits, inviting you to
experiment with things on your own. You will be
able to purchase tickets at a reduced price. You can
then visit the museum on a day of your choice and
at your own convenience.
Movies
Come to watch movies and spend time with your
new friends from Germany and all over the world.
We chose three movies for you.
Lola rennt
In this visually and conceptually impressive film,
two-bit Berlin criminal Manni delivers some
smuggled loot for his boss, Ronnie, but accidentally leaves the 100,000 mark payment in a
subway car. Given 20 minutes to come up with
the money, he calls his girlfriend, Lola, who sprints
through the streets of the city to try to beg the
money out of her bank manager father and get to
Manni before he does something desperate.
Monsieur Claude und seine Töchter
This recent French comedy from 2014, is about
the desperate Monsieur Claude, whose daughters
are all not married to catholic French men but to
his regret to men from different countries with
different backgrounds. The movie highlights prejudces about cultures in a very entertaining way.
Farewell Ceremony
When it comes time to say goodbye, we will have
a farewell party where we will officially present
your exchange student participation certificates, have student performances and a tombola.
The farewell ceremony will also be a good opportunity for you to chat and celebrate with your
fellow students, buddies, teachers, as well as the
coordinators from the ZIBP. You find a list in Claudia Kuhlmann´s (A17b) room to sign up for your
party participation. You can sing, play the guitar or
show other talents you would like to share with us
on this evening. You can also present your group
video, bring special finger food from your country
for the buffet or just help to decorate the room.
Barfuss
The famous German actor Til Schweiger plays
Nick, a hedonistic bachelor, who helps and eventually falls in love with Leila, an excaped mental
patient. The movie was generally well received and
was awarded the German Media Award Bambi as
the best German movie of 2005.

IO Activities
Becks Tour
This tour provides a wealth of fascinating information about the Becks brewery, the art of brewing,
and the Becks and Haake-Beck brands. It
covers the museum, a look at the ingredients and
the brew house, and takes us along the malt
silos, fermentation and storage tanks. A visit of the
bottle filling line will only be possible if the line is
in operation. At the end of the tour there will be a
special beer tasting test and a mini draught course
at the Beck’s Visitor Centre. The complete tour
takes approximately 3 hours.
Trip to Berlin
You should not miss this trip to Germany´s capital and largest city. The city has no distinct centre,
but many pockets of attractions are dotted all over
the city. The densest array of sights lies to the east
of the Brandenburg Gate, on either side of Unter
den Linden. We will explore the city on sightseeing tours which are included in the price, as well as
two overnight hotel stays, including breakfast, one
dinner for the whole group, entrance fees, and a
visit to the New Palace in Potsdam.
Bouldern at “Linie 7“
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is
performed without the use of ropes or harnesses.
While it can be done without any equipment
whatsoever, most climbers use climbing shoes
to help secure footholds. We will take you to our
huge indoor boulder gym close to Bremen´s
main station. Experienced climbers as well as
total beginners are welcome to join this event,
where a coach will assist you in taking first
climbing attempts. Please make sure, you bring
comfortable/sports clothing to this climb. You
can rent climbing shoes for a small fee.
Meeting of Families - Adopt-a-Student
Come and meet your German family. We invite
exchange students who have signed up in the
Adopt-a-Student programme and host families
to get-together at the campus Werderstraße
for a few hours. Feel free to bring your friends.
Drinks and snacks will be prepared!
German Cooking and Baking
Christmas baking has a long tradition in Germany
and it is very common for people to give away
cookies to friends and family members during the
Advent season and for Christmas. We will introduce you to and enjoy some traditional and tasty
German recipes for Christmas cookies and food.

LEI Activities
The Local ERASMUS Group (LEI)
The Lei is a group of former ERASMUS-students. Their aim is to make you feel at home in Bremen as fast
as possible. They organise parties, cultural events, pub-crawls and are looking forward to meeting you.
Here are some of the events organised by LEI:
Full Flavour Party
This is your welcome party. As a location, we will rent the Magazinkeller at the cultural centre Schlachthof
located close to the main station.
Trip to Hamburg
As Germany‘s second largest city, Hamburg has a lot to offer - it is an exciting very cosmopolitan city and
at the same time it still reflects its medieval Hanseatic history.
Klettergarten & Barbecue at the Werder Lake
For June we have planned two outdoor activities. At the Klettergarten you can test or display your outdoor
climbing skills. Together we will enjoy a barbecue at the Werder Lake later in June.

There are many
festivals and markets to
find music and cultural
events.
Take your new friends
or just explore on your
own and have fun!
Samba Karneval
In Bremen, everything is a bit different - even the
carnival. Hot samba rhythms, glittering colours
and wild mask dance instead of clowns and
witches - the Bremen Carnival is unique in
Germany and has become Europe‘s largest
samba carnival.

round-abouts, rides, lottery booths with snacks
and delicacies from around the world. Fireworks
at the opening light up the sky over the 100,000

hundred performers provide entertainment and
excitement for young and old. Over four million
visitors each year will go to the Freimarkt in
Bremen, during the last two weeks of October.

Weihnachtsmarkt
Every year, three days before the beginning of the
Advent season, the traditional Bremen Christmas
Market opens up and turns the centre of the city
into an illuminated “Christmas Village”. All around
the splendid town hall, the statue of Roland and
the famous Bremen Town Musicians, decorated
market stalls, booths and stands create an atmosphere of magic – in anticipation of Christmas.
Vegesacker Hafenfest
The harbour festival is a traditional event in the
North of Bremen which celebrated its 33 birthday
in 2013. On four stages bands will provide musical entertainment, while visitors can feast on fish
sandwiches or ice cream, sip coffee or sparkling
wine and buy jewelry, crafts and antiques. With
historic ships from the Vegesacker Harbour museum, visitors can enjoy free boat trips on the Lesum
and Weser river and watch „Kutterpullen“, a
rowing competition.

Breminale
The Breminale is Bremen’s summer music festival.
The red and white striped tents along the riverside will be visible from a distance and in the air
there will be the sound of live music. And next to
the entertainers and theatre groups, there will be
all sorts of food and drinks to choose from. The
programme will be published on the website of
