There are many at this time! President’s Message ~April Showers Bring May Flowers~ I might as well start with another familiar saying and we all know that in our neck of the woods, this is too true. But, it does not stop any of us from getting out and enjoying our furry kids! Events are ramping up and I hope to see many of you at the Fun Field Day at Cathy Hakola’s house on May 2nd. See the flier in this newsletter for more information. This is a fun event where you can bring your dogs out to do what they were bred to do. We always have a potluck and a BBQ. We are hoping for rain between now and then so Cathy’s new pond will be filled and the puppies can literally “get their feet wet”. It is a great practice day for the WC Test! On May 16th is our B-Match and meeting. This is always a great event and a place for your puppies to strut their stuff. At the meeting we have a potluck and BBQ. Entries are taken day of match but you are highly encouraged to enter in advance. The flier and entry form are included in this newsletter. On May 30th will be the WC Test on Sauvies Island. Jeff Kennedy is the chair and the flyer and information form is included in the newsletter. Another fun event for all of us! The Hunt Test and Specialty are always on our minds about now. We are looking for another co-chair for the Hunt Test as Barb Strauss had to step down for personal reasons. Please contact Tracy Hildebrandt ([email protected]) or myself at [email protected] (as Test Secretary) if you are interested in helping. This is a top priority at this time. Ellen Sparks and Lizzie Moir are on top of the Specialty but helpings hands are always welcome. I do know that someone is needed to chair the breakfast each day. I am sure there are other jobs to fill as well. Our events are only as good as our members make them so please, step forward one and all! The letter about the new hunt test regulations can be forwarded upon request. Treasurer’s Report Bank account was reported. This month we had a small income from dues and donations and expenses and AKC fees. Our insurance is renewed as of now (new policy). Old (Unfinished) Business HRT: Traffic is bad until 10:30AM due to the foot race (Foot Traffic Flat) on the island. Marilyn Parker suggests people get there before 6AM. Marilyn will talk to Doug Shade who runs the masters to discuss timing. Traffic getting onto the island is heavy. Julie Marquis noted that it took her an hour to get to the island from St. Johns one year at approximately 6AM. One lane will be closed on island until close of the race around 10:30AM. Race schedule, per the Foot Traffic website: 5:30AM: Race day packet pick up begins; 6:30AM: FULL marathon starts; 6:50AM: HALF marathon starts; 7:45AM: 5K & 8K starts WC: No update Specialty: Hotel rooms are double priced compared to last year. Will need six to eight rooms (depends on where obedience judges are coming from, if any are couples/family members that can share, etc.). Look at other options. Look into Air BNB. Also discussed ways to save money at specialty to make up for the increase in prices. Ideas: stud service auction, saving money on ribbons, additional dog services/ items. Regarding fiesta theme, Susie Morrill and Lisa will take care of it. Will take donations. Possibly charge $5.00 per person for those who want to attend. Other clubs and dog events often charge for the food. Would need to go into premium list. Look into whether or not that went out already. Volunteers are needed to take on breakfasts for the specialties – please contact Lizzie. Marilyn is already getting items for the baskets. She would like $100 for the baskets toward the raffle. Susan Huntzinger seconded. All voted in favor. Greg Huntzinger wrote Marilyn a check for $100 at the meeting. B-Match: Note the change in date. Julie will get Greg to forward her entry form to update and add to next newsletter. Field Training Day: No update 3 Sportsman Show: Table until close to next year. Julie will put it in her calendar to bring up prior to next year’s show. Trailer: Judy and Scott Chambers have looked into places. Trophies: HIT Rally – will be added to trophy donations. Cannot get glass from Phyllis anymore. Taking ideas for new items and will email and ask around for ideas. Have been looking into it – finding it fairly expensive. Ideas that came up are pottery and slip leashes. New Business Catalog Ad: Not sure if the ad made it into it. Rescue: Tabled FB Page: If a member wants to be added they can email Cindy, Lizzie, or Julie. Julie to add a note in the newsletter email. Dilute Gene: Julie will find letter to add to newsletter. Educational Speakers: Ideas included, Tracking – Curtis and Carla, Titers/Vaccinations, Dermatologists, Physical Therapist, Accupuncture for dogs, Holistic vet (SE Portland). Field Training Seminar: Everyone was into it. The fall would be the best time. Ideas for seminar leaders included Adrian Harden, Lee Salmon, Barb Gilchrist, and Richard Matzke. After the meetings, a poll was released to the fancy/judges/clubs/Delegates for a review and vote. As a result of the polling and review by the staff, the recommendations for change were presented to the AKC Board of Directors for their review in February/March 2015. The AKC Board has approved 75 changes/additions to the Obedience Regulations effective December 1, 2015. To view the regulation changes, please go to: http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/news/obedienceregulation-changes/ The above link will take you to the AKC website where there are three documents posted: 1. Summary List - Identifying the 75 Regulation Changes, effective 12/01/2015. 2. Obedience Regulations & Judges Guidelines Changes – showing the items that were struck from and added to the regulations. 3. A Table of Contents for the Regulations – identifying the flow of how the new regulation booklet will be published. In general, these regulation changes are meant to clarify and bring greater consistency to current judging practices and event requirements, modify administrative procedures to make events more enjoyable for participants and represent a balanced attempt to positively impact the sport.
