Leading the Way GRADY HEALTH SYSTEM 2014 ANNUAL REPORT As one of the largest public health systems in the United States, Grady Health System is a place of big numbers, broad community impacts and expansive plans for the future. Our singular objective is to become the nation’s finest public academic healthcare system. Yet even with our vast size and scale, we know we can only deliver against that objective by providing outstanding, personalized care – one patient at a time – to every person we are honored to serve. ON THE COVER Sika Ametu escorting a Grady patient to physical therapy. At Grady, we are leading the way in Atlanta and in Georgia to help save lives, advance cuttingedge research, train the next generation of doctors and improve patient satisfaction all along the way. Here’s how we are leading the way … Shekita Johnson 2014 Annual Report 1 Ebola Showcases Grady EMS Expertise When the first American Ebola patient arrived for treatment in the U.S., the Grady EMS Biosafety Transport Team was ready, willing and uniquely prepared to handle the historic journey from Dobbins Air Force Base to Emory University Hospital. The ambulance ride took 40 minutes, but preparations for that trip actually began 14 years earlier when an all-volunteer team of highly skilled paramedics was formed to transport highly infectious patients. Today, the Grady EMS Biosafety Transport Team is the nation’s most experienced ground transport team for Ebola patients. Their expertise led to an invitation to a meeting at the White House, and it’s made them highly sought-after trainers and consultants for EMS providers around the state and the nation. Aaron Jamison, John Arevalo, Wade Miles, Gail Stallings 2 Grady Health System Kathleen Gundry, MD Jordan Kanyi, Grady RN New Technology Pinpoints Cancer Cells It may seem archaic, but surgeons typically mark lumpectomy targets by sticking thin wires into their patients’ breasts. In August, Grady became the first Georgia hospital to pinpoint cancers by injecting them with a radioactive seed that’s normally used for low-dose radiation therapy. Grady’s Avon Breast Center now uses them to map abnormal tissue. Surgeons use radiation detectors to find and remove the seed, and judge the operation’s effectiveness. “We can immediately assess margins around the resection,” says Dr. Kathleen Gundry, director of breast imaging at Avon. “The result is a technically superior operation that will lead to better patient outcomes.” 2014 Annual Report 3 Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center restores the lives of patients in ways other hospitals cannot. Grady’s Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center is redefining stroke care. It’s so good that more than 60 hospitals refer patients there. So good that it’s one of the nation’s elite Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Centers. So good that patients beyond the abilities of other hospitals often walk out of Grady just days after being carried in – their lives restored. The center is one of America’s most technologically advanced treatment facilities. One area it specializes in is using a combination of minimally invasive surgery and state-of-the-art imaging to allow skilled clinicians to remove blood clots from the brains of ischemic stroke patients. Those clots, the cause of the majority of all strokes, historically left patients with physical or cognitive impairments. Neurointerventional physicians Diogo Haussen, MD & Raul Nogueira, MD 4 Grady Health System Stroke survivor Mardeene Mitchell & daughter Diane Goh, MD Jonathan Ratcliff, MD & team Historically credited with training 25 percent of Georgia’s physicians, Grady has also launched the careers of thousands of other medical professionals, from nurses to paramedics, pharmacists to radiology techs. Georgia’s premier teaching hospital is a training ground for hundreds of Emory and Morehouse medical school residents each year. But Grady also operates schools of radiologic technology, radiation therapy and diagnostic medical sonography; training programs for paramedics, emergency medical technicians and advanced emergency medical technicians and residency programs for pharmacists and nurses. Students work alongside seasoned professionals. For example, last year pharmacy residents helped to fill more than 800,000 outpatient prescriptions. And paramedic trainees assisted on thousands of 911 responses. Grady, credited with training a fourth of Georgia’s physicians, has also launched thousands of other medical careers. 2014 Annual Report 5 Grady Burn Center eliminates pain for patients by using revolutionary, antimicrobial bandages. Patrice Jones caring for a patient in the Burn Clinic Dr. Walter Ingram, Medical Director of Grady Burn Center 6 Grady Health System Burn patients experience the greatest pain when their bandages are changed. In fact, most burn patients are hospitalized to deal with the pain of those changes. The Grady Burn Center is eliminating the pain by using new antimicrobial bandages that remain in place till a burn heals. New dressings introduced in Europe are used on all scalds, which represent most burns. The flexible bandages are permeated with silver particles that reduce the risk of infection and allow the skin to heal by forming a protective layer over the injury. This technology allows Grady to treat many patients – including most children – as outpatients so they can recover in the comfort of their own homes, where recovery is faster and less stressful. Ponce Center patient Peter Byrd enjoying some time with one of his providers, Sanjay Sharma Grady Transforms HIV Care Grady’s Ponce De Leon Center is one of the nation’s oldest, most comprehensive HIV centers. Since 1986 it’s cared for tens of thousands of patients. Along the way, it transformed their treatment. Once a leading cause of death, HIV long ago became a chronic condition – in part because of the Ponce Center’s cutting-edge research and treatment modalities. Its reputation has influenced researchers and physicians working with HIV patients nationwide. Ponce studies helped medicine to refine treatments, reformulate medications and understand a disease long thought to be a death sentence. Even as it treats more than 5,500 men, women and children each year, the Ponce Center serves as a beacon of hope to patients throughout Atlanta and across the country. 2014 Annual Report 7 Message from the President & CEO John Haupert 8 Grady Health System From Left to Right: Mark Meyer – Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer; Christopher Mosley – Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer; Patricia Plair – Senior Vice President/Finance; Lina George – Executive Vice President/Chief Human Resource Officer; Lindsay Caulfield – Senior Vice President/Marketing & Public Affairs; Benjamin McKeeby – Senior Vice President/Chief Information Officer; Yolanda Rich – Vice President of Compliance/Chief Compliance Officer; Shannon Sale – Senior Vice President/Planning & Business Development; John M. Haupert – President/ Chief Executive Officer; Renay Blumenthal – President, Grady Health Foundation; Kelvin J. Holloway – Deputy Senior Vice President/Medical Affairs; Rhonda A. Scott – Executive Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer; Matthew Hicks – Vice President/Government Relations; Timothy Jefferson, Esq. – Executive Vice President/Chief Legal Officer »» Patient quality ranks among the industry’s best. We reduced hospital-acquired conditions like infections so much that we’re among the best of America’s safety net hospitals. »» Our finances are stable. Despite reduced government funding, Grady is no longer anxious about routine bills or maintenance costs. Our stability allows us to focus our fundraising to finance major investments. »» Physician engagement improves. Physicians support our vision. Our annual physician survey shows doctors are 100 percent more engaged in and committed to Grady than just a year ago. »» Our work force is dedicated. First-year and voluntary turnover are among the lowest in Grady’s history and in our industry. A Milestone in Our Marathon BE THE BEST – that phrase drives everything we do at Grady, from patient care, to financial stewardship, to creating a culture of excellence. And with that goal in mind, I am happy to report that last year the health system achieved significant improvement in every metric we use to judge our performance. Our board of directors, executives, physicians and staff have worked together to bring healthcare’s best practices to Grady. We’ve updated processes, brought in new physicians and staff who are among the tops in their fields and invested in new technology. Those actions brought immediate benefits to our most important metric of all – providing our patients with the highest quality care, resulting in the best outcomes possible. But the successes of 2014 are just a few steps in our unending marathon of continual improvement. When the board of directors challenged all staff members to be the best, they insisted that we commit to being a national healthcare leader, an institution that constantly advances the quality and efficiency of care. In 2014, we realized substantial gains in areas that are key to our success now and in the future: »» Patient satisfaction rose by nearly 43 percent. Today, 70 percent of patients rate Grady 9 or 10 on a scale of 10. Nearly three out of four patients say they’ll recommend us to a friend. Grady has been an innovator since the hospital opened in 1892. We’re home to the state’s first cancer center of excellence. Georgia’s first open-heart surgery was performed at Grady. The world’s first 24-hour sickle cell treatment center is here, and we have one of the nation’s most technologically advanced stroke centers. 2014 Annual Report 9 The list of Grady “firsts” is far too long to detail here – innovation has been part of this institution’s DNA from the beginning. While financial challenges a few years ago could have shifted our focus, we are and will always be committed to advancing care, advancing quality and advancing treatment development, not just for our patients, but for the benefit of patients everywhere. In this annual report you will find stories about that innovation and about our standing as a healthcare leader. You see how that standing enables Grady and its medical school partners to attract and train some of the best and brightest future health professionals. We are proud to be recognized as an institution that provides unparalleled opportunities to practice medicine with a clinical team that has unsurpassed credentials. A Year of Recognition Registered Nurse Janet Nduati sharing discharge instructions 10 Grady Health System In a year that brought many accolades, the most important recognition we received came from our patients, who rated our care high and lauded the support of our physicians and staff. We were also honored by our colleagues in healthcare who praised our achievements in quality care and leadership. The highlights include: »» The Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability placed Grady on its Presidential honor roll based on a year of clinical successes. »» The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer presented Grady its Outstanding Achievement Award. We were We are proud to be recognized as an institution that provides unparalleled opportunities to practice medicine with a clinical team that has unsurpassed credentials. one of only 74 U.S. healthcare facilities to be honored for excellence in cancer care. »» The Studer Group presented Grady with an Excellence in Patient Care award based on good patient outcomes. To be eligible, an organization must demonstrate outstanding performance. »» Press Ganey Associates named Grady a Success Story Award winner for demonstrating leadership, implementing organizational change and improving performance. The group also presented Grady with a Commitment to Excellence Award for outstanding achievement in employee engagement. 1990s and create a new, more efficient space for patient care. The new Emergency Department will help us accommodate the ever-growing number of people in need of medical assistance, create a more user-friendly space for clinicians and lead to reduced wait times for those with noncritical needs. While these honors are significant, we view them as mile markers in our marathon, our journey of continued improvement. For Grady to achieve its vision to be the best, we must maintain our momentum through an ongoing commitment to technology, processes and customer service enhancements. Both of these projects are possible thanks to the generosity of The Marcus Foundation, Inc., which has donated $50 million to finance the creation of Grady’s world-renowned stroke, trauma and neurological facilities. Ongoing Investment in Our Future During 2014, we continued to invest in new technologies, facilities and services, increasing our total outlay in the last seven years to more than $340 million – comparable to the cost of building the average new community hospital. Most healthcare providers would take pride in that amount. We believe it’s a good start, but we know that much more must be done. In 2014, we broke ground on a new $76 million emergency center to replace outdated facilities that have been in constant use since the early Plans were also started for a $10 million renovation of existing hospital space to build a multidisciplinary outpatient center that will expand the scope of services available in our acclaimed Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center. In addition, we undertook a major renovation of patient rooms to modernize the space where we provide inpatient care. The renovation allows us to provide our patients more privacy and creates an environment that optimizes the recovery experience. By any measure, 2014 was a good year for Grady. Our financial progress, coupled with our patient care and facility improvements, has built a solid base on which we will continue to build as we work to ensure that this vital healthcare resource meets the evolving medical needs of our community and our state. 76 MILLION $ Renovation and Expansion Project 24/7 365 DAYS A YEAR Cardiac Cath Center More Than 1,000 STROKE PATIENTS 2014 Annual Report 11 Grady & Community Benefit Grady provides more than $100 million in community benefit, approximately 14 percent of our operating expenses. GRADY HAS BEEN working for improvement in health of the community for more than 120 years. The very foundation of our organization was established to ensure access to healthcare for those in need. Our benefit to the community is delivered through the thousands of people who visit our emergency department, our clinics and our inpatient service and receive tests, surgeries and ongoing maintenance of well-being annually. In 2013, Grady Health System conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment with a new, collaborative approach and methodology. We believe collaboration with partners outside of our organization, including other healthcare 12 Grady Health System providers, service providers and innovators in our community, will drive overall health improvement through collective impact. To achieve this collaboration, Grady has partnered with the Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement (ARCHI). The following initiatives were completed in 2014 in support of our Community Benefit Implementation Strategy: Grady primary care centers are NCQA-accredited as Level III Patient Centered Medical Homes. Over 2014, our primary care centers advanced the PCMH model, as we prepared for re-accreditation, focusing on coordination of care for patients with diabetes and hypertension, optimizing information sharing and provider communication. Grady serves on the Steering Committee for ARCHI to identify key areas of collaboration with community partners including United Way, Georgia State Health Policy Center, Atlanta Regional Commission, Mercy Care, Kaiser Permanente, Centers for Disease Control and many other community partners. Grady supports this collaborative planning effort through annual financial support. To ensure coordination of care between Grady and the federally qualified health centers, Grady provided a variety of approaches for external providers to access information in our electronic medical records securely. Grady was the lead employer in the Atlanta Beltline’s Workforce Partnership, collaborating to engage, train and employ our population in healthcare careers. Grady assisted our patients in gaining access to Medicaid and exchange insurance products through training our financial counselors and engaging partners to expand our capacity to work with patients to educate on insurance options and navigate the application process. 2014 Annual Report 13 Getting Stronger Every day 2014 was a watershed year for the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation. It was the year we could emphatically say THE GRADY CRISIS IS OVER. BACK IN 2007 and 2008, the looming financial collapse of Grady and the devastating effect that would have on all of the healthcare systems in Metro Atlanta gripped the entire region. Strong public debate and fingerpointing dominated the news. Now, seven years later, that is ancient history. Grady is a thriving, growing public academic medical center, providing quality care on a level that puts it among the very best in the nation. Our goal to be the best seemed like a dream a few years ago, but is now within reach. The safety net so many feared they would lose is in place and stronger than at any time in our history. And amazingly, this was achieved despite a dramatic decrease in funding from Fulton and DeKalb counties. In fact, because of the overwhelming support from the community and the philanthropic dollars donated, Grady was able to stay strong despite losing $233M in funding from the two counties. How was this historic turnaround achieved? Atlanta rallied – she showed she cared, and the outpouring of support for those charged with getting Grady back on its feet was phenomenal. The first to step up were, of course, the Grady staff and physicians. These folks are a remarkable blend of missionaries committed to doing good and the best healthcare professionals in the country. With the right amount of backing and the tools they needed, they continued to perform miracles and reshaped the health system from the inside out. Then there was strong leadership. We were extremely fortunate during this period to be led by two outstanding CEOs – Michael Young and John Haupert. Each exactly the right person at exactly the right moment. And last, but certainly not least, is our volunteer board of directors. I don’t know the words to adequately express my appreciation and that of the entire community for what these exceptional men and women did for Grady. I was honored to work side by side with the late Rev. Joseph L. Roberts Jr., James Young, Sandra Holliday and Michael Hollis. And to our original board members whose terms recently ended – Bob Miller, Dr. Louis Sullivan, Jim Stevenson, Aasia Mustakeem, Joe Rogers, Bob Burroughs and Duane Ackerman – thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do on behalf of Grady. What next? Simple. Onward and upward. Achieving our goal of being the top public academic medical center in the country is in sight. A.D. Whether providing care for our patients, investing in new facilities and equipment, or preparing the next generation of physicians – we could not do so without the financial resources so generously given by those willing to invest in our future. Through the White Coat Grady Gala, capital contributions, annual campaigns, our new license plate program and other key initiatives throughout 2014, the donors on the pages that follow have made a tremendous impact on our ability to serve our community and to fulfill our mission of helping those most in need. We also salute the many Grady staff who gave generously to a new “Every Dollar Counts for Grady” employee campaign. They, too, are leading the way by their financial support as well as their commitment of service to Grady. The strong support of our donors is allowing us to plan an even stronger future. One in which we remain true to our history, but also make changes that improve the quality of care and help us to save even more lives. One in which we continue leading the way. Please join us in thanking these generous individuals and organizations for their investment and their commitment to the Grady Health System. We are so grateful that through a partnership of business and community leaders, Grady has not only survived, it is thriving and growing every day. 18 Grady Health System Individual/Organization The 2492 Fund 745 Memorial, Inc.
