superstar Mike Whiddett.
Known to millions as ‘Mad
Mike’, Whiddett has won drifting
championship titles from all four
corners of the globe, indisputably
lives up to the title mad, and is
now proudly supported by Mazda
New Zealand.
Truly fanatical about Mazda, Mike
currently pilots the MADBUL RX-7
and BADBUL RX-8, both of which
have earned cult status of their
own - fully customised from the
ground up, they have been voted
the world’s best looking drift cars.

There are a number of
components to the sponsorship
arrangement, perhaps one of the
most vital benefits for Mike and
his team is access to genuine

BADBUL plus the integration into
the global Mazda network.
Whilst not a podium finish, one
of Mike’s personal achievements
could arguably be his best yet.
Last year he ‘Conquered the
Crown’ drifting the Crown Range’s
47 corners, 10.4km of cliff drops
and hitting speeds of 232kmh –
the footage of which attracted
2.9 million views in the first eight
days.
Whiddett has now set his sights
on developing another addition to
the Mad Mike Motorsport garage.
The aim is to have all three
custom vehicles competing in the
Formula Drift World Championship
(held through USA, Japan, Asia
and Australasia) and with the
added support from Mazda he is
now amped to do exactly that.
“I did my first engine conversion at
14 years old, was racing my first
Mazda in 1999 and currently one

which will ensure he has the full
horsepower of Mazda behind
him,” adds Harris.
While Mike wishes he could
be drifting 24/7, his day to day
life is not best suited to one of
his drifting RX’s. Mazda have
equipped him with a BT-50 Arashi
Limited Edition and Mazda6
Wagon; both which bear more
than a little resemblance to the
custom racecars.
“Needless to say it did not take
long for Mike to add his own style
to these vehicles,” jokes Harris.
“It is very exciting working with
a talented sportsman of Mike’s
caliber and we are looking forward
to being part of the journey.”

Bamber back
in the lead in
Carrera Cup Asia
Gilmour makes
semis at X Games
Avoiding the carnage around
her, New Zealand’s Emma
Gilmour stormed through to
an incredible Red Bull Global
Rallycross Championship (GRC)
semi-finals result at the X Games
in Austin, Texas.
Competing as the sole female,
due to the non-appearance of
Australian drifter Sarah Burgess,
Emma became the first woman to
ever compete at the X Games in
rallycross. Her Rhys Millen Racing
Hyundai Veloster Turbo rallycross
car ran faultlessly all weekend in
the mid 30°C temperatures at the
impressive Circuit of
Americas venue.
She was forced to keep her
wits about her with the heats
repeatedly red flagged due to
accidents stopping the racing.
The eventual GRC winner was
Scott Speed, who was also
victorious in the opening round
in Barbados in May. Dunedinbased Emma was the best-placed
Hyundai team member after her
team mate Rhys Millen struck
problems in the quarter finals.

Heartbreak for Hartley
at Le Mans
K
iwi driver Earl Bamber won both rounds
of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, held
at the Fuji International Speedway in
Japan. After missing the last round due to
European racing commitments and dropping
down the leader board, Bamber now resumes
the lead in the series.
After winning the first race (Round 6), LKM Racing’s
Bamber dominated Round 7 of the Porsche Carrera
Cup Asia, with a commanding run from pole to
chequered flag. Second across the line after the
15-lap race for the second time this weekend was
Porsche Holding’s Martin Ragginger, but once

again the Austrian was handed a time penalty for
another coming together with the luckless Alexandre
Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase.
Bamber’s fourth victory of the season puts him at the
top of the overall championship leader board, eight
points clear of Ragginger in second, and 15 points
clear of Imperatori in third. Bamber’s brother William
made his Carrera Cup debut finishing eighth in Round
7 and retiring out of Round 6.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia begins the second
half of its 2014 season at Malaysia’s Sepang
International Circuit with Rounds 7 and 8 to be held

After a strong performance by
both 919 Hybrids the Porsche
Team was left empty handed
after a dramatic final stage of the
24 Hours of Le Mans race. After
more than 22 hours the LMP1
crew of car #20 (Timo Bernhard/
Brendon Hartley/Mark Webber)
suffered a powertrain problem
at the most famous endurance
race in the world. Earlier in the
race the car was leading for a
significant period. The second
Porsche in the hands of Romain
Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc
Lieb likewise proved to be very
competitive, but was hampered
by a drivetrain problem.
Audi won the race with a first and
second finish and Toyota coming
in third. After a thrilling start to
the race with changing weather
conditions, numerous accidents
and a relatively calm night, Timo
Bernhard took the lead in the
#20 Porsche 919 Hybrid. This
was after 20 of the 24 hours. At
12:36 on Sunday he handed the
leading car over to Mark Webber.
Less than 20 minutes later the
Australian was forced to slow
down and drove solely on electric
power back to the pits. The team
could not repair the damaged
powertrain.
Half an hour later, the sister car
with Marc Lieb at the wheel had
a gearbox failure. Car #14 was
lying fourth before it was pushed
into the garage at 12:54. Shortly
before the chequered flag was
waived, the Porsche 919 Hybrid
returned to track but in the end
was not classified.

Bray in top 20 at first
European KZ2 Champs round
Kiwi karter Daniel Bray has
finished 15th at the first round
of this year’s CIK-FIA European
KZ2 Championship at Genk in
Belgium. The 27-year-old from
Auckland, driving for the works
GP Karts team, claimed three
top six finishes across the four
qualifying heats (in the other he
was spun out on the second turn
and ended up 26th) and started
his pre-final from P11 position.
However he was again hit from
behind in that race and was lucky
to be able to work his way back
up the field to 17th place and
claim the last transfer spot to the
final. Though he started that race
form P34 on the grid he did well to
work his way up to 15th place at
the flag.
The weekend’s KZ2 class races
were dominated by Italian driver
Andrea Dale (CRG/Maxter/
Bridgestone) who was in the
same stream as Bray, winning
all the heats then his pre-final
and the final. Bray will return to
Europe in early July for the second
(Germany) and third (Sweden)
rounds of the championship.

Ashley delivers again
The Pace Project Management
Ashley Forest Rally Sprint
was won by the V8 powered
Mitsubishi Cordia, but not in
the hands of the owner
Steve Murphy.
It’s the fifth win at this event
for the car and this time it was
Rangiora’s Matt Summerfield
at the wheel after Murphy had
invited the 22 year old to share
the drive. Murphy has won three
times while Hayden Paddon
claimed the fourth win. The Cordia
was guaranteed victory after
the elimination rounds rewarded
the pair with the fastest times,
Summerfield winning the final
run. Mike Tall (Evo 4) finished
third ahead of Richard Baddock
(Subaru). Ex NZ champion karter
Matthew Penrose (ex-Crowe
Subaru 4WD) was impressive,
finishing seventh in only his third
rally event.

Toyota Racing gets behind
Schools’ competition
Paddon values learning from
Hyundai WRC debut in Italy
New Zealand’s top rally drivers
Hayden Paddon and John Kennard
successfully completed the final
day of Rally Italia Sardegna, taking
a top five stage time and finishing
their WRC debut rally with Hyundai
Motorsport in 12th place overall.
The results spoke volumes of
Paddon’s determination and mature
approach, as well as the team’s
hard work in getting the Kiwis
restarted for the final four stages.
However the real emphasis for
Paddon’s first event in the Hyundai
i20 WRC car was on seat time and
driving virtually every stage of Rally
Italia Sardegna from start to finish

in order to gain valuable data about
the car to contribute to the team.
Paddon finished Saturday in 13th
overall. This was based on the
assigned time received after an
engine misfire meant the team
asked Paddon to stop and not
complete the day’s final stage.
Starting fourth on the road on Sunday
the Kiwis then continued steadily
through the remaining three stages
to finish their first rally in the Hyundai
i20 WRC in 12th place, which also
made them the leading Hyundai in
only the sixth event that the team has
contested. The pair will compete in
six more WRC events before the end
of the year.

Toyota Racing New Zealand
will back this year’s KartSport
New Zealand National Schools’
Championship in Palmerston
North in July. They are backing
the Bruce McLaren KartSport
Awards. Each year two awards
are offered and this year the prize
of a drive in a Toyota Finance 86
Championship TR 86 race car
will go to the winners of the two
most popular eligible classes at
the event. It involves more than
just racing as competitors are
required to produce and present
a project at their school on the
career, achievements and values
demonstrated by the driver the
award honours, New Zealand
racing great Bruce McLaren.
South Island schools have
been quite successful at this
competition. Burnside High
School won last year’s Secondary
school class while Medbury won
the Primary/Intermediate category.
The two-day Toyota Racing New
Zealand 2014 National Schools
Championship meeting will
be contested at the KartSport
Manawatu club’s Manawatu
Toyota Raceway over the July

Anstey’s exploits at Isle of Man TT
Many would have followed the
exploits of Kiwi professional
motorcycle road racer Bruce
Anstey at this year’s Isle of Man
TT event. While not winning any
category on this occasion the 44
year old has previously won nine
titles, setting the fastest ever
lap of the 37.75 mile course with
a staggering 132.298 mph (212
kph) average speed.
Motorcycling fans may well
remember him racing here in
the late 80’s and 90’s before he
left for the UK. Back then he
was pretty quick and was often
head and shoulders ahead of his
competition. He now races for
one of the UK’s biggest dealers
Padgetts Motorcycles. (His boss
Clive Padgett came to NZ and
raced in the early 1980’s). Anstey
now heads to the world’s fastest
road race, the Ulster Grand Prix
held at Dundrod street circuit
near Belfast in Northern Ireland.
There he also holds the fastest
lap record, set in 2010 at over
133mph.

market
share
Commercials and
SUVs surge in
popularity
New passenger car numbers
continue to shrink in NZ while
new SUVs and light commercials
continue to rise.
Passenger cars now hold 41.9%
of the total new vehicle market,
down 3.6% on the January-May
period last year (45.5%). At the
same time, new SUV sales have
risen 2% to claim 29.8% of the
overall vehicle market.
Light commercial vehicles have
also grown sales in the past five
months, up 1.2% market share to
24.2%.
Heavy commercial vehicles hold
3.8% of the new vehicle market,
up 0.5% on the first five months
of 2013.
While dropping overall, new
passenger vehicle sales show
some marked changes in
the various segments. Small
passenger car sales (the second
smallest in engine capacity) have
grown 20.8% in the past five
months, compared with a year
earlier.

expense of the light segment
(the smallest cars) down 8.8%;
medium cars, down 4.8% and
large cars down 2.1%.

Let electric cars use bus
lanes says supplier
A supplier of charging points
for electric vehicles says that
the Auckland Council should let
drivers of plug-in hybrid and full
electric vehicles have access to
bus and high occupancy vehicle
lanes as a reward for driving them.
The growing demand for vehicle
stability, safety, and enhanced
driving dynamics is fueling the
adoption of all-wheel drive (AWD)
systems.
AWD systems enable the
secondary axles to engage before
slippage occurs and ensure
the active distribution of torque
between axles when turning
corners, lending the vehicle
optimal power and stability on the
road.
On-demand AWD also improves
fuel-efficiency allowing vehicle
original equipment manufacturers
to counter the impact of soaring
fuel prices on market growth.
In a submission to Auckland
Council on its energy resilience
and low-carbon action plan,
electric vehicle charging point
supplier Mark Yates suggests that
allowing plug-in electric cars in
such lanes will encourage more
to take advantage of renewable
power generation.

could be given different coloured
registration plates to allow traffic
enforcement officers to easily
identify the electric vehicles,
as well as raise their public
profile. However, Yates says the
exemption should be lifted once
the electric fleet grew in numbers
as it should not be allowed to clog
up the bus lanes.

says the idea of letting electronic
vehicles use a bus lane sounds
like a nice initiative, but he is not
sure how practical it would be in
practice. “Any council initiative to
promote the adoption of electric
vehicles is supported by us,
provided it is done in a safe and
practical manner.” he says.
New analysis from US
consultancy, Frost & Sullivan,
finds that the US AWD market –
comprising part-time, full-time,
on-demand, combination, and
electric AWD (eAWD) systems –
earned revenue of $11.66 billion
in 2013 and is estimated to reach
$14.98 billion in 2020.
Market penetration of AWD
systems is likely to be nominal
over the forecast 5-year period –
increasing from 32% in 2013 to
37% in 2020.
On-demand and combination
AWD systems are expected to
contribute 45 to 50% of total
all-wheel drive revenue, and
hold a market share of 50 to 52%
in 2020.

Jonathan Hall has received
one of MITO’s inaugural Clyde
Cunningham QSM Memorial
Scholarships.
Jonathan (28) is one of two
automotive graduates in the
Hawke’s Bay to be awarded
the scholarships, which were
established by MITO in honour
of Clyde, a long-standing MITO
employee and a volunteer firefighter who passed away last year.
Both Jonathan and his manager at
Bayswater Vehicles Napier, Hayden
Firth, were mentored during their
apprenticeships by Clyde.
“He was a great guy,” remembers
Jonathan. “He was really helpful
and always went the extra mile.
Plus, because Clyde had been in
the trade, he really understood
what apprentices were going
through.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by Service
Manager Hayden. “Both Jonathan
and I were lucky to have Clyde help
us through our apprenticeships.
He really wanted his apprentices
to succeed, and nothing was too
much of a problem for him.”
Jonathan is planning to use the
$1,000 scholarship to study
MITO’s Advanced Technical
(ATech®) course. “This course will
give me more qualifications and
skills, particularly in the diagnostic
area, which is what I really want to
get involved in.”
Jonathan has been at Bayswater
Vehicles Napier for six years now,
and says he’s really enjoying it.
“Like my father and brother, I’ve
always pottered around with cars.
But after leaving Napier Boys High
I worked as a computer technician
and then qualified as a chef.”
But the long hours of the hospitality
industry didn’t mix with family life
(Jonathan has two young children)
and so he jumped at the chance of
a one-year automotive engineering
pre-apprenticeship course. As
part of that course, Jonathan was
required to do work experience,
which led him to his current
employer.
“I’m really thankful to Bayswater
for giving me a chance, to Clyde
for helping me and for this MITO
scholarship for giving me the
opportunity to take my career
even further.”

What sets you apart from your competitors?
I follow the “work hard and be honest” mantra from my father
(Max) which is part of the reason why I run a tight ship, but I
also encourage my team to add that personal touch to their
service and to take time to get down on a personal level with
customers. This helps with understanding our customers’
needs so we can give them the service they want.
What is your dream car?
A 1972 Holden Belmont Station Wagon in mint condition –
give me a call if you know where I can get one!
What is your ideal/dream reward?
A man’s barbeque with a patio.
Tell us about your decision to purchase parts rather than
manufacture them.
Max engineered many parts but I saw better costeffectiveness in buying parts, using the saved time to do more
jobs. However over the years I experienced over and over
again the hassle of purchasing an aftermarket part that did not
fit or was the wrong part, which meant spending extra time
sourcing the right part and having to delay finishing the service
for our customers.
What is one of your worst aftermarket experiences?
I went through three companies and five brake master
cylinders before the right one finally arrived on the bench, only
to find that the genuine part was pretty much the same price.
What makes

I highly rate

also noticed
