First the reminder about SFI positions and Rank 1701 74209 Last month one of our members has brought to my attention a potential issue. As a result I must remind everyone that fictional roles of position and Rank are just that, fictional. Why? Is this an issue? I don’t believe it really is a problem or really an issue. But, if you are in need of professional help with something, please seek licensed and bonded professionals in the appropriate field, be it Engineering, Psychological, Mechanical, and especially Medical related. Thermopylae is not the place to come to with these issues, but we are a community who will help each other as friends. And that is a rare thing in this day and age. I hope this takes care of any confusion and concern, and reminds everyone that we’re here to have fun. Any questions will be answered at the ship’s meeting. Second from the desk, and on a merrier note: It’s June! We have just a few things to do, including: Father’s day cook out at the lodge, and a few others events coming up, which we’ll talk about at the meeting. If the lodge is locked up and we can’t get in again, we’ll hold meeting at the CO’s Quarters. I want everyone to start thinking about something else: in 6 months time my term as CO will be up. We need to dust off the old election schedule and procedures to elect a new Commanding Officer. Other things to start planning for: 74209 74703 Thermopylae cannot and will not be held responsible by the actions of any one member who attempts to hold their self in a real world state of position. Meaning: Thermopylae does not support the private practices of it’s individual members professions, real or fictional, beyond the role play and fictional position in the club. To acknowledge and allow anyone to offer public professional services through the ship is leaving members to potential legalities, which we cannot get tied up in as a star trek fan club. If anyone does offer professional services it is for personal business practices only and does not represent Thermopylae. 5496871.57854 Harvest Costume Party- For October. Plans? Since testing on others is frowned upon in many circles, I have been experimenting using myself as the subject. So far the stressors have included sleep deprivation, extreme nausea, forgetfulness, spontaneous napping, and the need to run to the latrine at an increasing rate. Although the test conditions and symptoms thus far have been severe, I can happily report that the first phase in my “Build Your Own Spartan” project is coming th along quite well and I should be expecting results to be finalized around the 28 of November, give or take. I will be sure to keep the crew updated as to the progress in this area and may even need to ask for assistance at times due to the rather all-consuming nature of this type of project. As my previous build at this project has yielded positive results for the past 7 years, I am confident that this new Spartan model will be just as rewarding. I have every reason to expect success. Then again, sometimes tempers do flare over little things and conversations get out of hand (stress being the cause of the flare). 1701 Well, I can see we all -- for the most part -- survived tax season. Now comes the spring (if it every decides to show itself) and then the summer fun. We all start to experience the urge to escape the cabin fever now that the weather is cooperating more of the time, except many of us are stuck behind a desk during the day. 74209 74209 Lucky me is right up front and get a wonderful view of the lovely sunny weather, when it is out, and am stuck looking out the glass doors with longing. Those with kids now have the task of getting them out and about, instead of inside by the computer or TV. Hopefully you live in an area that enables them to do just that. I wanted to share some tips that our staff couselor at work has put out (I sorta "borrowed" them by emailing them to myself) ;) The first one deals with something that is becoming more common at times with the econmy the way it is, the extra stress it is causing. Sometimes we can When You Feel Verbally Attacked Caterina Spinaris Tudor, 2012 When you experience what to you is a verbal attack on your person, instead of attacking right back, following: 1. Step back and try to assess if you were truly attacked, or if you are being overly sensitive and taking the other per—son’s behavior personally more than warranted. 2. If possible, ask fora later time to talk, so you can think things through more clearly, and so the other person can calm down also. 13. Use light humof cautiously when it feels safe to do so. 14. Acknowledge that others may in fact agree with the other person and disagree with you. 74209 10. Acknowledge that even though you hold a different opinion, there is a possibility that the other person may be right, and that perhaps only further developmentswill show the degree to which you may both be correct in some ways. 11. Make conciliatory, non-combative, non-aggressive statements regarding the other person's perspective, and avoid provocative statements, such as put 74703 5496871.57854 0011 STARFLEET INTRANET 78922 54954 08 SENIOR STAFF REPORT 74656 Position: Ship Counselor Name: DONA RAE COLBERT Rank: Fleet Captain 1701 “With the exception of the glitch in my replicator...” 74703 5496871.57854 021 651 LCARS 284352.588 451 LCARS COMMNET 6788.71 74656 1701 Remember, stress can come easily these days. Recognize it in yourself and your situation, find ways to combat it and try and give others a little bit more of a break then you may usually -- who knows what is going on in their lives. But........a stressful situation does not give justification for doing just anything regardless of how it effects others. The second one is a topic that is ongoing and timeless. In the modern era however the ever-present issue of peer pressure is filled with "new", and more dangerous, things that children and teenagers feel pressured into doing. The Top Ten Tips for Helping Your Child Deal With Peer Pressure 74703 2. Promote your children's self-esteem. Children who are confident and have positive self-worth are more likely to pursue friendships with children who are good role models and better able to resist negative peer pressure. Find opportunities to boost your children's self-esteem and enjoy success by involving them in activities that capitalize on their strengths and interests. And, of course, praise them for things they do well at home. 3. Set a good example. Your children are keen observers of what you do and may learn more from what they see than what they hear. If they see that you are constantly striving to keep up with other parents, they will likely do the same with their peers. If they see you drinking and smoking, they are less likely to resist engaging in these behaviors. If you do drink or smoke, giving it up will make a vivid impression on them. 74209 74209 needs to be nurtured long before your children's teenage years. Standing up to peer pressure is one of the greatest challenges that children face. Many are unable to stand up to the challenge and are led into participating in risky or even illegal activities. Help your children deal with peer pressures by doing the following: 1. Strengthen the bond with your children. They will be more likely to respect your views and values and better able to resist peer pressure if they have a good relationship with you and feel you are a source of support. This bond 5496871.57854 4. Talk with your children about peer pressure. Let your children know that you understand how hard it can be at their age to do things that make them stand out. Tell them that their peers may respect their decision not to join them in an activity even though they may not express it, and that some may even admire their courage in resisting what they could not. Help them understand that a friend who is pressuring them to do something that may be harmful is not much of a friend. Appeal to their desire for autonomy by encouraging them not to let others manipulate or make decisions for them. teachable moments to introduce some cautions without moralizing or lecturing. 0011 STARFLEET INTRANET 78922 54954 09 SENIOR STAFF REPORT 74656 Position: Ship Counselor Name: DONA RAE COLBERT Rank: Fleet Captain 1701 “With the exception of the glitch in my replicator...” 74703 5496871.57854 021 651 LCARS 284352.588 451 LCARS COMMNET 6788.71 74656 1701 5. Avoid overreacting when talking about peer issues. Your children may tell you things that may make your jaw drop. If you overreact, you will discourage them from talking with you about these issues again. At the same time use these teachable moments to introduce some cautions without moralizing or lecturing. Although it may seem as though they are dismissing what you are saying, they will hear you. 6. Choose your battles carefully. Don't make an issue out of your children's wanting to wear the same clothes as his friends or adopt a trendy hairstyle. Make your stand on high-risk peer behaviors. Battling your children constantly over minor issues may drive them toward peers who are similarly alienated from their parents. Not sweating the small stuff will enable you to be more effective when you challenge them on the larger issues. 74209 7. Help your children develop good decision-making skills. If they can learn to trust their own instincts when making decisions, they will be less likely to let others make decisions for them. Encourage them to think through the possible consequences of the decision they are facing, including whether it may cause them harm. Let them know that giving into the pressure now may make life harder for them later on. 9. Get to know your children's friends. Make a point of encouraging your children to invite their friends home. Spend some time with them and assess whether they are positive influences. 10. Don't hesitate to set limits for your children. Your willingness to say no to them sets a good example and may help give them the courage to say no to a peer when faced with a potentially harmful situation. Hopefully either you or someone you know can find some help with these tips. Until next time -- "Save the Earth.... It's the only planet with chocolate" (I have a magnet that says that)...? ? ? 74209 8. Help your children develop responses to peers. Help them figure out what to say to peers who are pressuring them to participate in high-risk activities. Suggest responses that are short and simple and that they can say comfortably. If they are receptive, role-play with them or encourage them to practice in front of a mirror. 74703 5496871.57854 0011 STARFLEET INTRANET 78922 54954 10 CHARITIES REPORT . 74656 So on May 12th at the Hyatt Regency of Bellevue, I volunteered at Tuxes and Tails, the once a year auction held to raise money for the Humane Society. Moebius Models has a reputation for putting out a fine model kit. They have put allot of time and energy into designing this model and it shows. But where the kit has it’s weak points is in mass production. The kit has tooling marks from the original master part, which as a model maker I am finding curious, and a pleasure to see. Details are not as clean and crisp as I would like to see, since the MSRP for this kit is $46 for a 16 inch long set of parts. Also, the detail is lacking in places, and it appears that short cuts were taken to help minimize master creation and tooling. Simply put, the addition of some simple separate parts and panels would have gone a long way with it’s value. 1701 74209 74209 The quality of it’s molded parts in the kit I received had two annoying issues. It was dimpled in places that were supposed to be flat surfaces for one. This could be caused by several factors, but is a problem that occurred in manufacturing, not master tooling. The second issue were the formed sprews inside the flight pods. Anyone that has a Dremel Tool or similar rotary tool, has no problem taking these down aside from annoyance. Anyone that does not have access to that tool, has to cut it out with a exacto knife and that’s about 6 sprews that need to be removed. Per flight pod. Without removal of these, the flight deck won’t fit into place properly. These are sprews that were snapped off as a part of the injection molding process. The fit of the kit parts is also not as snug as they should be. The worst part is the forward section of the ship does not fit as level as it should, and again the flight pods do not either. When assembled the parts actually are slightly bowed. To get my hulls to come even close to working I had to trim off about 1/16” of plastic off of part of the forward interfacing structure. And even then, I find it still needs to be fit, by hand. Ignoring the tooling that is supposed to align the whole thing. Next we go on to the instructions. 74703 prop. Pretty cool. My gripes about it are the coloration that is advised. Basically what they are saying regarding the kit is: We don’t know what color it’s supposed to be. So we painted ours steel and put a black wash over it. Then they give you a list of colors to use if you want to paint the rest of the details. Uh yeah? About that... watch the series guys. It’s a series of metallic colors for the body, with a series of grey tones. For my build I limited my paints to 3 shades of grey. LT Gray, Dark Gray, and a German panzer gray. The general body color I used a silver aluminum spray paint from Walmart, I had in the house, for the plated sections, and Valspars’ Aluminum for the ribbed sections of the ship. For the interior flight pods I used a pewter color which is darker than the silver but still stays in the metal tones, just darker for lack of scale, to make it look “properly” scaled or sized. And for giggles I also used a silver sharpie to help knock down some of the glare. Using the CGI images that were provided with the instructions I painted the mechanical sections the German gray color. The remaining two colors I set about painting them in random grey square colors, only spending 5 minutes maximum per panel. After that, I set about adding a black wash to the kit to give it a deeper sense of color. But what I realized after starting the procedure: It sucked. The wash was not accurate enough for the small detail. So I took out my secret weapon. The Gundam Marker. These are markers designed for detailing plastic mecha kits called Gundams. The dark grey color works well to add detail as it is partially translucent, and tints down detail areas as if it were dirt or shadow. This worked much more to give the kit a visual weight and a little more realism. On the rear engines knowing that this kit will never light up I elected to use tones of gold and chrome for the under colors, and for the engine bells. This was painted on the interiors and exterior since the engine parts are translucent. Over that as a last detail to simulate wear, a layer of burnt magnesium paint was added, which gave it that used “pop” look. In person this does look impressive. The panels shimmer and disappear in light as they do on screen, even looking matte at different angles. For the Star field backdrop in the photos that’s all done with optical trickery. A black cloth of Sparkly black material was added to give it the star field look, then the brightness in the cover photo was taken down in Corel draw’s bitmap editing program. So the following images are the model, in it’s glory, and not photo shopping the photos. So on to the next page. This kit really is as easy to assemble as a regular trek kit, so anyone can nearly enjoy it. I used super glue to assemble it. These are beautifully done, and if you cut the corners off of it, they feel like a BSG 5496871.57854 0011 STARFLEET INTRANET 78922 54954 12 BUILDING BSG-75 74656 1701 74703 1701 74209 Building BSG-75 BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 74209 Build by and Photos by Scott Nakada 74703 5496871.57854 0011 STARFLEET INTRANET 78922 54954 13 THE CO’S CHALLENGE 74656 Position: Commanding Officer Name: Scott Nakada Rank: Captain 1701 Model it. Please give it a chek mark, and give or email the form to the chosen department head, XO David Garrett, and LT. Hedrick, or myself. See everyone soon, and take your time about choosing. This provides structure for new members, and a sense of belonging to a team. Department Teams will be used during gaming, or other competitions through out ship events or projects. This allows us to work in organized predetermined groups for larger events such as uniformed events, or events that Thermopylae may host. It also means you will be able to work with people that have a more specific interest when we work together in groups. 1701 This is not to exclude anyone or to break people up.
