From the Desk of the Principal
Dear Seniors,
Your high school days are coming to an end. The beliefs that you
hold about yourself as a high school student are now going to be replaced
with beliefs about yourself as a college student, an employee, a military
trainee, or a trade school apprentice. What are those new beliefs going to entail? What positive beliefs and what negative beliefs will you embrace as you
take on this new role?
Christopher Columbus, the Wright Brothers, and Roger Bannister
were all told, “It can‟t be done!” Christopher Columbus was told he couldn‟t
sail to America because the world was flat and he would fall off. The Wright
Brothers were told, “If man were meant to fly, he‟d have wings.” Roger
Bannister, the first man to break the four-minute mile, was told it was physically impossible to do it. These people are examples of people who held to
their beliefs, even though they went against the commonly accepted beliefs of
others, and in holding to their beliefs, they succeeded.
What you believe about yourself and your world actually creates your
world, even if the belief is totally false.
Did you know that you can take a two ton elephant, put a thin little
rope around its ankle, attach the rope to a six inch stake in the ground, and the
elephant will not move? The elephant could, of course, easily pull out that
stake in an instant. So, why doesn‟t the elephant do that?
When it was a baby elephant, a heavy chain was placed around its ankle and was attached to a tree or a post so that every time it tried to get away, it
couldn‟t. As a matter of fact, if it kept trying, it would hurt its ankle. Consequently, it grew up with the belief that says, “If you put something around my
ankle, I cannot move!” A totally false belief in this instance. In fact, elephants
have been known to die in fires tethered in that fashion.
This is exactly what your negative beliefs are like. They are like a
rope around your ankle, keeping you from doing things in your life! It is imperative to pay attention to what you believe about yourself because it is going
to create your experience of life. You will accomplish or not accomplish
things, depending upon what you believe about your ability to do so. Be aware
of your beliefs and work on changing the ones that are not serving you. No
one else can do that for you. Research and common sense indicate that a positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success in life. Believe in
yourself and the ability to succeed in this next chapter of your life.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer
yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what
you know. And you are the guy who'll decide where to go.”

At the end of the school year, Limestone Community
High School will say goodbye to three wonderful employees.
Ms. McNeeley, Mrs. Menold, and Mr. Pille will all begin new
chapters of their lives. Each person was asked three questions:
1. What are you plans after you retire?
2. How long have you been a teacher or worked at LCHS?
3. What are you going to miss the most about LCHS?

By: Mr. Gresham
Dear Class of 2012,
Saturday, May 12, 2012,
marks the graduation of the
Class of 2012. However,
your graduation day is, ironically, not for your celebration but a gift from you to
your parents, grandparents,
family, and friends who have helped you the past
four years to reach graduation. Your celebration and
reward for your hard work will be seen as you take
what you have learned from Limestone and apply it
to your new role, whether you enter college, join the
armed services, or begin your career in the workforce. Limestone Community High School will always be proud of the accomplishments you have
achieved.
The Class of 2012 has accomplished many tasks for
which you should be proud. From the senior members of the Student Council to the Senior Class Officers to the senior leadership on our athletic and cocurricular competitive teams, you have always been
reliable, enthusiastic, and dedicated. No one will
ever forget the great things your class has helped
achieve for our school. The gifts of life through your
blood donations, the food baskets during the holidays, and donations to the Easter Seals Foundation
have established the caring nature associated with the
Class of 2012.
The Class of 2012 has provided our school and community with wonderful, memorable moments including Mid-Illini Conference Championships, the Fall
Play, the Madrigal productions, the Spring Musical,
and All That Jazz performances. The Class of 2012
will be remembered for the successes on the athletic
courts and fields, the stages, and within the community.
In areas of academic success, your class boasts many
gifted scholars. Members of your class will be attending colleges around the country and in a variety
of settings. Many other classmates have already been
accepted in the various branches of our armed services where they will use their Limestone education
and experiences to develop new skills while defending our country. Still others of the Class of 2012 will
take the skills and education learned the past four
years and immediately put them to use in the current
workforce.
As you say your last good-byes to Limestone, I encourage you to remember all of those individuals
who have given you the opportunity to accomplish so
much while at Limestone and have prepared you to
be able to do so much more in the years ahead.
Please tell your parents, grandparents, and that special person how much you appreciate the sacrifices
they made to ensure you would graduate with distinction as a part of the Class of 2012 by allowing them
to join your graduation ceremony on May 12th. At
the same time, thank your teachers for sharing with
you the gifts of knowledge and friendship. These
gifts will continue to enrich and brighten your future.
Finally, remember each other. Every member of
your class is unique and each played a role in all that
you have accomplished the past four years.
To each of you, please accept my personal congratulations and very best wishes for continued success
throughout your lives, and my thanks for giving so
much of yourselves to make Limestone such a great
school.
Sincerely,
Allan S. Gresham
Superintendent

Limestone Community High School has
a great bunch of students who you see every day.
These are the students that put smiles on our
faces and make Limestone so great. They are the
students of the Life Skills classroom. What most
people do not know, is their story.
The Life Skills classroom that is taught
by Mrs. Assman and Ms. Henderson is very similar to regular classes. The 24 students follow the
bell schedule and switch classes each period. The
Life Skills class teaches academic skills to the
students and also skills they will need as adults.
The classes taught in the life skills class are English, P.E., and Orientation to Technology, U.S.
History, Community Awareness, Career Orientation, and Math. Mrs. Assman and Ms. Henderson
also teach Health, Home Living, Social Skills,
Recreation/Leisure, and Biology.
“The biggest goal for our students is to
become independent adults after high school and
live full, enriched lives,” Mrs. Assman said.
“The students are like any typical
teenager in that they want to be social, have
friends, have a boyfriend/girlfriend, feel accepted, and hang out. Some students may communicate or learn differently but inside they are
just like any other Limestone student,” she
added.
Some of the general education students
seem reluctant to visit the Life Skills classroom
or interact with the students in Life Skills. Limestone students should know that anyone and everyone is welcome to the classroom and can interact with the students in the hall, in class, and
lunch.
Mrs. Assman stated, “Good interactions
and relationships help the Life Skills students
come to school every day and look forward to
having another good experience at Limestone.
LCHS does a great job of embracing people with
disabilities, especially with the Easter Seals program. We need to remember that the children in
Easter Seals will one day attend Limestone and
be in the Life Skills class.”

Correction
In the April issue of Limelight, the story entitled
“The Mid-Illini Art Show Returns” incorrectly stated
that no students from Limestone won any awards. Limelight apologizes for this error. Below is the correct story.
The Mid-Illini Art Show was hosted by Metamora High School and took place at the Prairie Center of
the Arts in Peoria. Works from all of the Mid-Illini
schools were on display, including Metamora, Limestone, Dunlap, Morton, East Peoria, Pekin, Washington,
and Canton.
Artwork was judged for difficulty, composition,
and craftsmanship. Best of Show was awarded in three
categories: 2D, 3D, and Photography. Numerous Merit
and Honorable Mention awards were also given.
Limestone had 26 pieces entered in the show.
Katie Bianco, Trever Brown, and Loan Dinh all received
Honorable Mention Awards.

Sports Roundup
Baseball
Girls Soccer
By: Courtnie Hess, Reporter
By: Courtnie Hess, Reporter
The Limestone boys varsity baseball has had a fantastic
year thus far. “We have pitched well, defended well, but our hitting has been a little sporadic,” Coach Renz said.
So far, the team has met the coaches‟ expectations. Coach
Renz said, “We knew we could be pretty good and we have won
the close ballgames that we need to. I wouldn‟t say we are exceeding expectations…hopefully playing up to them.”
They have had a pretty surprising season this year with
their pitching and defense. Coach Renz said, “We knew we could
do it, however, the consistency is a nice surprise.”
When asked who had done well for them this season,
Coach Renz could not just pick a couple of players; he said the
whole team. Coach Renz said that what they do need to work on is
situational hitting and production of more runs. Their overall record this far is 15-3, 5-1 in the conference.
The Limestone girls soccer team has done very well so far
this season. Coach Fitch said, “We have scored quite a few goals.
We even scored more than we have in the past five seasons, and
we have won more games than the past five seasons.”
Coach Fitch said the team has stepped up to play to their
full potential. “We are really focused on one game at a time this
year, and the team has really taken on the challenge. They are
playing some good soccer,” he said.
Coach Fitch has four girls that have done well for him this
season: Jessica Armour, goalkeeper; Cassidy Jennings and Madeline Coats have scored 12 goals; and Kahla Walker, who has 2
goals and 11 assists.
The girls are currently in the tough part of their schedule,
so every game they have to go out and play hard. Their current record as of press was 6-4-1.
Boys Tennis
Girls Track
By: Madison Ludolph, Reporter
The boys tennis season has gone well, with the young team
showing a lot of improvement. “These young guys are showing a
lot of promise for the future. My expectations from the beginning
of the season have placed them right where I want to them to be,”
Coach Wallinger said.
Drew Hillman and Andrew Chiaravalle have done very
well this season for the team. Some season highlights include
Drew Hillman and Tyler Leuallen placing fourth at number one
doubles, Michael Rendleman and Andrew Chiaravalle finishing
fourth at number two doubles, and Aaron Martin finishing fourth
at number two singles at the Galesburg Invite. The Mid-Illini tournament will be played on May 14, and sectionals will be on May
18.
“Working hard to improve our game and compete hard is
what we would like to work on down the stretch,” Coach Wallinger said. The current record is 2-5.
Boys Track
By: Summer Maple, Reporter
The boys track team is doing very well so far this season.
The team hopes to compete very well at the upcoming conference
meet. “Based on preseason expectations, we are about where I expected us to be,” Coach Durham said.
Tyler Morse, Keenan Yarbrough, and Chris Bloompott
have done well on the track for the Rockets. “We should work on
better consistency to improve on down the stretch,” Coach Durham said.
By: Madison Ludolph, Reporter
The girls track team has surprised a lot of people this season and is preparing to compete for the Mid-Illini crown. “We had
very high expectations for this group of young ladies at the start of
the season. We have far exceeded even the highest expectations on
the track,” Coach LaFary said.
Track is a long season and one of the biggest challenges is
keeping the girls motivated. “The beginning of the season was productive because it‟s new and the athletes felt like they were
quickly getting more fit. As the season has progressed, we have
had to refine the practices, drills, and routines so that there is an
element of challenge and growth to keep up with the athletes‟ progress,” Coach LaFary said.
Coach LaFary said that Briana Gardner (sprints), Ashley
Hoerr (high jump and shot), Chloe Knight (discuss), Sydney Bontz
(distance), and Victoria Heller (distance) have done well this season.
To improve down the stretch, Coach LaFary said, “We
need to keep working on mental strength heading into the championship season. These girls are ready to do very good things – they
just need to believe in themselves.”
Softball
By: Summer Maple, Reporter
The girls softball season is flying by with the team already
in their second round of conference. “Based on the preseason picks
in the newspaper, we are right where we were picked to be,”
Coach Hardesty said.
“If we take care of the games we should and snag a win
here or there, we could surprise some people the second half of
conference,” Coach Hardesty said.
The team does not have any one player that stands out because no one player is more valuable than another. The girls
should continue to improve their communication on and off the
field Coach Hardesty said. The softball teams record is 10-8 overall, and 3-3 in conference.

For most high school athletes, their athletic careers end with high school graduation. Others continue playing their sport as long as they can. LCHS is proud to
announce that several Rocket athletes will continue their careers at the next level. Check them out below!

Many students at
LCHS do not realize
that there is a star
bowler among them.
Harley Bollinger, a
senior at LCHS, is
that star among us.
Out of all the other
sports and extracurricular activities offered at LCHS,
Harley chose bowling, a sport not offiHarley Bollinger

When asked why he
chose bowling, Harley said, “How many people can throw a fifteen
pound ball over twenty miles per hour for hours on end? I think it‟s a
unique sport.”
Harley said he gained inspiration to bowl starting out as an activity just for fun, but soon fell in love with the game. Harley began
bowling when he was six years old. He stopped for awhile then
started back up when he turned twelve.
Harley said he started getting serious with bowling when he
turned fourteen. Harley says the best thing about bowling is getting to
meet new people, mainly the girls.
He claims, “It‟s a big plus.”
Harley says he competes in a lot of tournaments and contests
such as the ISYL, Pepsi, City, and Nationals. As a bowler, Harley has
accomplished many things. He is recognized as one of the top junior
bowlers in the Peoria area. He says he carries about a 215 average, has
bowled a perfect game and has picked up the infamous 7-10 split.
If there is one thing Harley does not like about bowling, it is the
rules. He is a member of the Youth Board, so he knows all of them.
Harley is always bowling if he is not at work or school. He was asked
if Limestone had a bowling team, would he be on it? He said, “Yes, we
kind of had a team for a league in the past and for the second year in a
row, my team won the league and I was the best in the league.”
Sometimes, just for fun, Harley will play other sports besides
bowling. He says he misses playing outfield in baseball. Harley is a
future member of the Men‟s Bowling Team at Robert Morris University of Peoria.

Guess who??
Can you guess the movie and who said the quote?
1. “I‟m going to make him an offer he can‟t refuse.”
2. “Toto, I got a feeling we‟re not in Kansas anymore.”
3. “I‟ll be back.”
4. “Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates, „you never know what you‟re gonna get.‟
5. “I see dead people.”
6. “Say hello to my little friend.”
7. “I would like to say this. Tardiness is not something you can do on your own. Many, many people contributed to my tardiness. I would like to
thank my parents for never giving me a ride to school; the LA city bus driver who took a chance on an unknown kid and last but not least,
the wonderful crew from McDonalds who spend hours making those egg McMuffins without which I'd never be tardy.”
