Call 1300 727 707 www.flysas.com.au Maiden profit for Poly Blue THE joint venture airline between Samoa and Virgin Blue, Polynesian Blue, has this morning reported a NZ$1.2m pretax profit for the period 30 Oct 05 to Jun 06. It’s a remarkable result for the carrier which was formed last year as a replacement for the former Polynesian Airlines. Virgin Blue ceo Brett Godfrey has hailed the success of the concept, last month saying that modelling showed that Samoa needed about 0.64 aircraft to service its needs. The joint venture arrangement allowed this to be put in practice, and the profit compares to cash GA agent fares GARUDA Indonesia is offering injections by the Samoan govt of special travel agent and companion about $100m over the last ten years. Travelscene Port to Port, Rose Bay. MFS Limited has today issued a statement saying it’s still in discussion with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about its takeover of S8 Limited. The offer is conditional upon the ACCC approving the deal, and MFS said it wanted to make clear that discussions on the matter are ongoing, despite previous reports. However pundits expect the deal will be given the OK by the ACCC given its formal approval of S8’s travel acquisitions (TD Thu). Polynesian Blue, with the latest figures indicating an 18% increase in tourism earnings for the country. Visitor arrivals increased 18.4% over the period, compared to an average annual growth rate over the previous decade of just 3.9%. Godfrey said it was a “tremendous result” which “demonstrates the economic, tourism and social benefits that can be generated by dynamic partnerships”. He said the success of the venture had led Virgin Blue to consider other opportunities for joint ventures in the South Pacific region. The firm said the new initiative uses technology that allows the insurance to be purchased in a single transaction as part of the online ticket booking process. The basic insurance policy covers ticket cancellation and baggage protection and costs $9 pp for domestic and international flights. WINDOW SEAT QANTAS ceo Geoff Dixon is certainly sharing the pain of high oil prices, with the carrier’s annual report released yesterday showing he received a 20% pay cut during 05/06, a drop of about $1.2m. But we shouldn’t feel too sorry for him, with his total package for the year still worth $5.2m. The accounts also reveal that when his contract was renewed on an ongoing basis earlier this year he received a nice little $7.7m extra superannuation payment. Dixon’s certainly putting his money where his mouth is, though, having acquired about 500,000 QF shares during the year. BUT it looks like it could be time for a new Porsche for QF exec gm John Borghetti, whose total package soared about $1.4m to total $3.2m for the year. That compared with Jetstar ceo Alan Joyce’s relatively measly $1.4m total income for 05/06. AND how about those directors? Such as James Packer, who received $129,000 for attending eight board meetings. Not that he needs the cash, having inherited about $6b this year. KEEP a sharp lookout on those motorways... A blind man in the UK has been banned from driving for three years after police stopped his car when they noticed it swerving across a Birmingham road. The 31-year-old told officers he’d had his eyes blown out in a bomb blast in Iraq, but was used to driving before the accident and was “testing himself” by getting behind the wheel. Worryingly, although he’ll never see again, he’s eligible to apply for his licence after another two years and in fact the magistrate ordered him to take a driving test after the ban expires. *Royal Silk Business Class ex SYD/MEL/BNE. Nejib Ben-Kheder is president of Sabre Airline Solutions’ consulting business, and was speaking at the GCC Low Cost Airlines conference in Dubai last Sat. He said the new model, which sounds quite similar to Virgin Blue’s ‘New World Carrier’ approach, is “set to gain a significant share of the leisure and cost-conscious business travel market”. He described the model as that of a ‘Value Focused Carrier’ (VFC) and said these types of airlines are identified by focused route networks, simple fare structures, relatively cheap distribution and sales arrangements, limited array of partnerships and streamlined ground operations. Ben-Kheder cited examples such as JetBlue in the US, Flybe in the UK and Indian carrier Kingfisher, which could “never be described )LZ[-HYLZ(]HPSHISL ^^^L_WYLZZMHYLZJVTH\ 7HY[VM[OL6YPLU[,_WYLZZ;YH]LS.YV\W True Bombay Sapphires... accurately as ‘no-frills, but neither would they fit the profile of your typical traditional carrier.” He predicted that VFCs would continue to grow their market share, estimating that this type of airline now carries 12% of global ‘leisure and cost-conscious business travel’ traffic, compared to 6% in 2001. Sabre said the trend had led it to develop new products to service the emerging VFC sector. Manila security move THE Philippines govt has increased security restrictions on flights departing from Ninoy Aquino Airport in Manila, with all liquids now banned from being carried through security screening. Qantas has advised that carry-on baggage at Manila must now not contain any liquids, cosmetics or toiletries, which must all be checked in as hold baggage. Where there’s an infant travelling, milk and liquid baby food are exempted, and prescription medicines are also permitted.
