FUTURE HOSPITALITY LEADERSHIP
MBAC.
by Pauline Levesque, president & CEO, Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association

Horry-Georgetown Technical College
The students of the HGTC Hospitality Tourism
Management Program have been active this past
year. Not only are these students members of the
Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association and
the Hospitality Adventure Student Organization;
they volunteer countless hours for the association’s
golf tournament, the Trio Dinner, Job Expo,
regular monthly meetings as well as working in
the association’s office. This involvement gives the
hospitality students great opportunities for hands on
experience in the industry and time for networking
with hospitality industry leaders.
For the past six years, these students have worked
with the South Carolina Hospitality Association to
coordinate and produce the State ProStart Culinary
Competition and the State Lodging Management
Program Competition for high school culinary and
hospitality students from throughout the state
who travel here to Myrtle Beach to compete.
The students also set up and man the HGTC
recruitment booth for the three days of the Hotel,
Motel, Restaurant Supply Show of the Southeast.
These enthusiastic students are involved on campus
with three HGTC Foundation events each year:
the foundation’s Fall Retreat, the Chaine Dinner,
which raised more than $25,000 each year for the
past two years, and the Annual Student Benefactor
Dinner. For the past five years, the hospitality
students worked with area restaurants to coordinate
the Festival Finale for the Tidelands Community
Hospice’s Festival of Trees. This year, the students
cooperated with the Tidelands Community
Hospice to design and facilitate the Jazz and Jewels
Luncheon, a jewelry fashion show which raised more
than $5,000 for the local hospice. This event enabled
students to enhance their event planning, menu
design, marketing and banquet skills.
Professor Jay Rowe is the
head of the Hospitality
and Tourism Management
program.
HGTC Hospitality Tourism Management Program students not only participate in the
Trio Dinner mentorship program but also volunteer countless hours working the event.
Suzanne Hinde, general manager of the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel,
and Jeff Wisnewski of Arcadian Shores Golf Club, honor Mike Ford, executive chef of the
Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel, for his work as hosting chef for
Trio Dinner 2009.
Coastal Carolina
University
This past year, Coastal
Carolina University’s
Resort Tourism
Management (RTM)
program for the academic
year of 2008-2009 has
graduated 53 students
and its enrollment in the
program is now over 200
students.
Coastal Carolina’s RTM students this past year have
volunteered at the Taste of the Town, Trio Dinner,
Hotel & Restaurant Supply Show of the Southeast,
and Myrtle Beach Job Expo. Plus many RTM
students have taken on mentorships with children
throughout the community.
The fieen members of Coastal Carolina’s RTM
Hospitality Adventure Student Organization were
busy this past year with site visits to: Sheraton
Broadway Plantation, Ocean Lakes Campground,
Myrtle Beach Sheraton Convention Center Hotel,
Custom Outdoor Furniture and Re-strapping,
Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction
Dixie Stampede, Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort at
Grande Dunes, Springmaid Beach Resort, Sea Mist
oceanfront Resort, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes,
and the Hampton Inn - Broadway at the Beach.
These site visits give RTM students a look into the
operations of many hospitality related businesses in
the Grand Strand area, and helps students see what
area of the operations they may like to work at in the
hospitality industry. This year, eight HASO students
made the trip to Columbia for Hospitality Day at the
State House. Also, this past year Coastal Carolina’s
HASO club raised more than $500 dollars for the
American Cancer Society at Coastal Carolina’s Relay
for Life fundraiser.
Finally, this year the RTM program at Coastal took
at big step in starting a CCU chapter of Eta Sigma
Delta. Eta Sigma Delta is the International
Hospitality Management Honors Society. Coastal
joins 70 some other universities worldwide to have
an Eta Sigma Delta chapter with the induction of 15
of its students.

F ROM My Desk
A LOOK BACK AT FY 200809
As I start my second term as chairman of your
Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s board of
directors, I feel a sense of satisfaction in the work our
chamber has undertaken. Through the efforts of our
members, volunteers, staff and board of directors,
we have continued to improve on our core mission of
promoting, protecting and improving businesses.
Five-Star Accreditation: The United States Chamber
of Commerce has awarded the Myrtle Beach Area
Chamber of Commerce its five-star accreditation for
sound policies, effective organizational procedures
and positive impact on the community. As board
chairman, I’m proud that the chamber was not only
accredited on the first attempt but also received top
honors. I commend the staff for all their hard work,
not just for the application but each and every day,
which earned them this distinction.
Of the 6,936 chambers in the United States, 260
(less than 4 percent) of those are accredited. Of
those accredited, only 49 (19 percent) have earned
the five-star ranking. In South Carolina, 10 state and
local chambers are accredited, with four of those
earning five stars.
Increase in Membership: While the national
economic downturn has impacted our local economy,
current members and new businesses still continue to
see the benefits of chamber membership. When the
Grand Strander went to press, membership was up to
2,500. This outcome is due to open communication,
proactive leadership and innovative, results-oriented
management. One example of the staffs’ vision for
recruitment is seen in their push for more homebased business members. Research showed this was
Carolina. This new law gives local municipalities and
towns within Horry County a new tool to create
jobs, reduce property taxes and help spur our local
economy. We are very thankful to the Horry County
legislative delegation for their efforts to cra this
legislation, which is truly a win-win for residents
and businesses. I applaud city council for balancing
the needs of businesses with tax cuts for residents.
Council members have guaranteed homeowner
tax savings and provided important infrastructure
investments. We hope local city or town councils will
take the opportunity to study this new law and give
it their full consideration.*
Additional Air Service: In August 2008, your
Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and
Horry County announced the reduction of
domestic landing fees for a nine-month period, from
September 2008 to May 2009, in an effort to attract
new air service. The incentive to capture new air
service also included eliminating landing fees on
all non-U.S. routes. Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Airlines
and Direct Air all took Horry County up on its
proposal and are offering direct air service to Myrtle
Beach International Airport.
These are just a few of the many successes we
achieved during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. These
accomplishments would not be possible without the
help of the chamber’s dedicated employees, chamber
members, volunteers and the chamber board.
The heightened level of air service reflects the
continuing, growing importance of the Myrtle
Beach area as a significant tourism and business
destination for visitors from around the country.
At a time when airline service is contracting, the
airlines’ decisions to fly to Myrtle Beach clearly
shows that our efforts to attract direct service
through landing fee reductions, marketing and
other incentives, is working.
Passage of Tourism Development Fee Legislation
in Columbia: We are encouraged that the tourism
development fee legislation is now law in South
I want to thank the board for asking me to serve
another term as your chairman. I am excited
about the prospects for our future. If you would
like to know more about the chamber and our
upcoming activities, please do not hesitate to
contact us at (843) 626-7444 or by e-mail at
[email protected].
MBAC.
Some of our accomplishments during the 2008-2009
fiscal year include:
becoming a huge market and while the chamber
had “scratched the surface” there were many more
businesses that could be added. Chamber staff went
to our current group of home-based businesses and
interviewed them through focus group discussions
on why they were members and what the chamber
needed to do to recruit other members. Their input
led to the development of a home-based business
expo, lower cost education opportunities and singleperson health insurance options being added to
MBACC’s list of services. The chamber has increased
its number of home based businesses by 50 percent
due to these new options.
Thank you for your support,
Brant Branham
2008-2010 Chairman of the Board
Editor’s Note: As the Grand Strander went to press, the
Myrtle Beach City Council was scheduled to vote on the
1 cent sales tax law at its May 26 meeting. If approved,
the tax will be placed on everything except groceries,
prescription drugs and gas and will go in effect Aug. 1.

HURRICANE FORECAST calls for an average year
The 2009 hurricane season is in the starting
blocks, and hurricane forecasters at Colorado
State University predict “average” activity for
the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season.
Atlantic Basin seasonal hurricane forecast
Noted forecasters from Colorado State University,
William Gray and Philip Klotzbach, predict the
upcoming hurricane season will include:
(The term “named storms” refers to sub-tropical
storms, tropical storms or hurricanes. Hurricanes
are defined as having winds of at least 74 miles an
hour (CSU, 2009). The Atlantic Basin consists of
the areas of the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean
Sea and Gulf of Mexico.)

TWITTER 101
Basics you need to know for your business to engage on Twitter
MBAC.
by Kimberly Miles, public relations manager
There’s been a lot of buzz about Twitter lately as one
of the newest social media micro blogs to engage with
potential clients, media or even celebrities online. It
can be sometimes confusing and overwhelming to
understand the language of Twitter. Below are a few
tips to help you get started:
1. Username: When setting up a Twitter account, the
username will be a reflection of your business. Keep it
simple by making your business name your username.
If that’s taken, then add an abbreviated location like
MB to the end of the name or similar.
2. Profile Bio: Unlike Facebook or MySpace, you
only have 160 characters to tell the Twitter Universe
who you are so get the essential words in about your
business and the type of information you will be
‘Tweeting’ about. Make sure you let people know why
they should be following you and what interesting
information you will be providing.
3. Getting Followers: Of course, unless you’re Ashton
Kutcher, it may be a little difficult to get people to
follow you when you first join Twitter. The key thing
to remember though, it’s not necessarily the quantity
of Twitter followers you have, but the quality of
those that are following you and who is listening to
what you have to say. Start following the competitive
businesses in your industry as well as people who are
following them. Do a search for your industry and see
who is already talking about you. When you follow
others, they may follow you. You also can get new
followers by ReTweeting what others have posted. For

example, RT @MyMyrtleBeach We’re getting ready
for the Sun Fun Festival – some great free events for
everyone!
4. Post Interesting ‘Tweets’: When you post a
message on Twitter, you only have up to 140 characters
to work with and unlike other social media Twitter is
meant to be used to share your thoughts and links. If
you are tweeting for a business, post some tweets that
look like a real person is behind them. For example,
when I tweet for Myrtle Beach, I’ll sometimes go
‘Went to a great restaurant today . …‘ Also to
maximize your characters, use a free URL shortening
site such as http://bit.ly which not only shortens your
links but tracks who clicked on them as well.
5. Tweeting With #tags: Add # symbol in front of a
keyword you think others will be talking about such
as #swineflu and then when people search for that tag
they will find your tweet.
Helpful Twitter links
1. Twitpic: Service that allows you to share your
photos on Twitter.
2. TinyURL: Where you can shorten your URL’s.
3. TwitterFall: Service that tracks Twitter trends.
4. Tweetdeck: Allows you to manage your Twitter
site, prioritize Twitter users you are following.
5. Twittertise, Twuffer or FutureTweets: Free
services that allow you to schedule your tweets in
advance so you can stagger them out over time.

LEISURE TRAVELERS Surveyed
by Wendy Bernstein, MBACC research manager
Over the past decade tourism research at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber/
CVB has strived to acquire more targeted research information on the
leisure traveler to enhance marketing efforts. In January 2007, the chamber
commissioned Equation Research to conduct a survey three times a year
with core tracking measures to monitor attitudes and travel preferences for
likely travelers to the Myrtle Beach area; it is referred to as the Myrtle Beach
Traveler Index. The index has become a vital tool in providing insight into
the effects the downturn in the economy has had on leisure travelers and
the areas in which the visitors have had to make cuts in their vacation plans.
The Myrtle Beach Traveler Index survey is conducted online and the
respondents are individuals who are part of the eRewards survey panel.
The survey respondents must be over 18 years old, and live in NY, NJ,
OH, PA, VA, KY, WV, GA, TN or MD. The results are not weighted and
400 responses are obtained each time the survey is conducted. The results
are monitored to receive an equal number of responses by gender and
age group for each state. Basic demographic information is captured and
combinations of aided and unaided questions are incorporated with a set of
core questions regarding attitudes and travel patterns. The final qualifying
participation criteria are that the respondent must have taken at least one
overnight trip for leisure in the last twelve months.
The most recent Myrtle Beach Traveler Index survey was conducted in
April 2009. The respondents were provided a list of answers and asked
which of the following factors, if any, have impacted or might impact
their leisure travel plans in the next twelve months? Of the respondents,
50 percent state a decrease in disposable income would impact their
travel plans, while 47 percent stated concern about the economy and time
availability. The fourth response showed 33 percent stated rising fuel prices
as impacting their leisure travel plans; where as in 2007 and 2008 rising fuel
prices were the number factor impacting leisure travel plans.
VisitMyrtleBeach.com
The respondents were next asked “What, if any, impact economic concerns
and fuel prices have on their leisure travel in 2009?” The chart below shows
a comparison of the responses to that question from 2009 and 2008. All
of the percentages decreased in 2009 compared to 2008, but the most
significant decrease of 50 percent was of those who stated they would
vacation closer to home.

The index also tracks how familiar the respondents are with the Myrtle
Beach area, 11 percent had visited within the last two years and were very
familiar with the area, while 39 percent had heard of Myrtle Beach, but
were not familiar with the area. Another 31 percent had visited more than
two years ago and were familiar with the Myrtle Beach area. These results
emphasize the importance of steady advertising of the Myrtle Beach area
to familiarize potential “new visitors” to the area, and serve as a reminder
to “past and repeat visitors.”
Lastly, the Myrtle Beach Traveler Index survey also provides the chamber
to ask the consumer any pressing issue questions pertaining to the area. For
the April index, we asked a few questions regarding the building of a new
interstate highway connecting Myrtle Beach to I-95. When asked if this new
interstate would be beneficial to them in traveling or deciding to travel to
the Myrtle Beach area, 50 percent said yes, 20 percent said no and
30 percent were unsure. They were then asked if this new interstate
highway had a toll on it, would you be willing to pay a reasonable toll fee,
and 60 percent said yes, 18 percent said no, and 22 percent were unsure.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
big boost for early May
Convention & Visitors Bureau
by Danna Lilly, CMP, Myrtle Beach Area CVB director of sales
In the midst of constant news of cancelled events, low attendance and
budget cuts, it’s great to be able to report positive news for the meeting
and convention industry in Myrtle Beach. On April 29, 2009, approximately
3,700 members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority from South Carolina,
Georgia and Florida arrived in Myrtle Beach to plant a huge economic
footprint on our local economy. The 56th South Atlantic Regional
Conference of AKA held three days of events at the Myrtle Beach
Convention Center and filled rooms at many of the area hotels, including
Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel, Anderson Ocean Club &
Spa, Holiday Inn Express and Fairfield Inn at Broadway at the Beach.
Attending the conference was the sorority’s international president,
Barbara A. McKinzie, who said, prior to the conference, that the large
number of expected attendees in Myrtle Beach is a show of support to
South Carolina and an example of the organization’s theme – Economics,
Service and Partnership. “During our stay in Myrtle Beach, Alpha Kappa
CVB package information
Alpha expects to contribute substantially to the city by dining at various
restaurants, shopping and by supporting the convention center and its
surrounding tourism attractions.” And contribute they did! Based on
estimated spending habits for convention attendees, the AKA attendees
spent approximately $2,075,700 in area businesses.
In addition to the economic impact of this group, Alpha Kappa Alpha also
held community service events that were open to the public. A celebration
recognized outstanding community leaders who have made significant
contributions to our community while also honoring the Historic Myrtle
Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center. A Health Fair was
held which offered free mammogram screenings, for underinsured or
uninsured residents of Horry County.
On another positive and final note, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was
previously booked in the Myrtle Beach area for their South Atlantic
Conference in 2000. In the fall of 1999, the group was forced to cancel their
contract because of the confederate flag debate and the boycott against
the state of South Carolina by the NAACP. Case in point that time changes
all and issues are resolved. We look ahead to the overall turnaround of the
economy and the continued growth of the group market for the entire
Grand Strand.

As of June 2009, the local, state, national and
global economies find themselves mired in a deep
recession. Job losses, particularly since September
2008, have been massive. Between December 2007,
the official beginning of this recession, and April 2009,
the U.S. economy has lost a total of 5.6 million jobs
and the unemployment rate has climbed from
4.9 percent to 8.9 percent. From the national to the
local level, we are currently seeing unemployment
rates at their highest level since the early 1980s, and
the current forecast calls for these jobless rates to
rise even higher in the coming quarters.
The events leading to this deep recession have been
widely analyzed, dissected, reported and discussed.
In short, the national economy experienced a
lengthy period of relatively strong economic growth,
fueled largely by consumption and construction,
going back to the mid-1980s. However, throughout
the early 2000s, much of this growth was financed
by ultimately unsustainable factors, including
increasing household debt, falling savings, and an
over-reliance on credit – the availability of which was
fueled in part by rising home prices.
The first cracks began to appear for the economy
with the downturn of the U.S. housing market
in late 2005 and 2006. This downturn in housing
remained generally contained until the effects of
falling home values and rising defaults began to
have real consequences for financial firms. The real
tipping point was reached in September 2008 with
the collapse of Lehman Brothers, followed days later
by the government rescue of AIG. These events
brought the normal and necessary flow of credit
throughout the economy to a standstill. Through
the final months of 2008 and the first months of
2009, the economy was buffeted by the drying up
of credit that hampered household, business and
government borrowing, the escalating rate of job
losses, the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding
massive government intervention in the economy,
and the global spread of economic deterioration.
The Federal Reserve has implemented numerous
programs in addition to the standard tools of
monetary policy, to try to soen and shorten
the recession. Similarly, the federal government
is essentially taking a three-pronged approach
to trying to spark economic recovery. First, the
government passed the much discussed $787 billion
stimulus package. Ultimately, this package is geared
towards propping up aggregate demand. Second,
the government is working on plans to target
foreclosures and the housing market. Third, the
government is trying various approaches to stabilize
the financial system. Pieces of these plans will likely
help the economy, while others probably will not.
Indeed, all of the government and Federal Reserve
actions will entail some benefit for the economy,
but will also entail some costs. Ultimately, will the
benefits outweigh the costs? Unfortunately, this is a
question that could take many years to fully answer.
In the short-term, however, the current forecast
shows the U.S. economy suffering a sharp drop in
real Gross Domestic Product (real GDP) in 2009.
Specifically, real GDP is projected to decline
3.3 percent in 2009. The economy may turn positive
at the very end of 2009 before registering an anemic
0.6 percent gain in 2010. As difficult as it is to pin
down the timing of the turnaround, it is even more
challenging to project the strength of the coming
recovery. Much of this will depend on the future
course of consumption in the coming years. Will U.S.
consumers return to their old ways and be willing
to take on additional debt and reduce savings to
finance consumption? Or, will consumers remain
relatively thriy for an extended period? The answer
to this fundamental question will largely determine
whether the economy will see a strong recovery or
a sluggish one. Given the scale of the issues facing
the economy today, the current forecast relies on a
relatively conservative view on future consumption
growth. This view leads to an economy that does
begin to recover in 2010, but will perhaps see below
average growth for several years.
The South Carolina economy has been hit very hard
by the current recession. As of early 2009, the state
is registering nearly the fastest pace of job losses on
record, and the state’s unemployment rate is already
at levels not seen since the early 1980s.
Looking at the current forecast, total employment
in South Carolina is expected to fall by about
4.2 percent in 2009. The pace of job losses will
then slow late in 2009 and into 2010, but total
employment for all of 2010 is also expected to
decline by about 1.6 percent. Right now, South
Carolina is not expected to return to positive job
growth until 2011, which would leave the state with
three consecutive years (2008, 2009 and 2010) of
job losses.

While the economy is generating substantial
uncertainty and anxiety, it is important to
note that whether the economy will recover
is not at question. Through a combination
of natural economic forces and government
monetary and fiscal policy, the economy will
turn the corner. The important questions
right now relate to the strength of the
coming recovery. The answers should come
into focus over the coming quarters as we
gauge developments in key indicators such
as home sales and household savings and
spending patterns.

Horry-Georgetown Technical College Hospitality and Tourism Program undergoes shi
Recently the administration announced that the Hospitality and Tourism Management
program has been changed to focus on a general business major.
On April 21, 2009, representatives from the business departments of HGTC and members
of the hospitality industry attended a DACUM Workshop. DACUM is an acronym for
“Developing A Curriculum” which is an innovative approach to occupational analysis.
It assists in determining tasks performed by persons employed in a job or occupational area.
Input from this group will be used to develop courses in-line with the current needs of the
industry.
Presently, participants are reviewing the outcome of the DACUM to determine if the task
statements of the industry were captured and to provide guidance in the formalization of
the new curriculum under the general business model.
This workshop will enable the college to develop a core curriculum for Hospitality
Management to be included in the business degree program allowing students the
opportunity to have more flexibility with their degree.

RIBBONCUTTING CEREMONIES
Your Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce conducts ribbon-cutting ceremonies as a value-added benefit
included in your membership investment. We bring the camera, oversized scissors and, of course, the ribbon.
A grand opening, an expansion, an anniversary or a move to a new facility is made more special with a ribboncutting ceremony. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce your business to the community and fellow chamber
members. If you’re a home-based business, give us a call and we’ll hold a special ceremony hereat the chamber just
for you. Your event can be as simple, informal, extravagant or ceremonious as you want it to be. It's your event
and should reflect your company's values and personality.
Ribbon-cutting announcements are included in the Grand Strander, which is mailed to our 2,400 plus members,
and photos appear in the online edition of the popular newsletter. The chamber’s ambassadors attend ribboncutting ceremonies on behalf of the members. Having ambassadors at the ceremony provides an excellent
networking and publicity opportunity.
Kick off a grand opening of your business by contacting Pat Creed, membership programs manager,
at [email protected] or (843) 916-7225.

AMBASSADORS
Ambassadors are a group of dedicated volunteers from various businesses throughout the Grand Strand community. Their mission is to welcome current members
and recruit new chamber members. Ambassadors serve as goodwill representatives at various chamber functions and aid in the support of members.
This month, the Grand Strander took a moment to check in with Annette Litteken, an ambassador with the chamber for two years, to find out why she enjoys
being an ambassador. To learn more about becoming a chamber ambassador, visit MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com and click on Member Resources/Ambassador or
contact Pat Creed, membership programs manager, at (843) 916-7225 or by e-mail at [email protected].

As a recent winner of “Be a Star,” a monthly drawing from the business cards
collected during chambers events, the Grand Strander got the inside scoop on
Coastal Carolina University and the education system.
What special niche has CCU carved out that makes you different
from your competitors? Our coastal/resort location influenced the creation
of some of the university’s most distinctive and successful program, such as
marine science, our PGA professional golf management program, and musical
theatre.

preliminary planning for a Master of Fine Arts degree that will

Coastal Carolina University has been a Myrtle Beach Area
Chamber of Commerce member for 25 years. Has your
membership been worthwhile? What has the chamber
done for you? Traditionally, Coastal Carolina University’s out-ofstate enrollment patterns have corresponded to Grand Strand visitor
origin patterns. It makes sense to market our presence through the
chamber’s efforts. Additionally, Coastal Carolina University was
founded as a community institution, and engaging with the local
community and region is an important part of our mission.
