St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd. San Ramon, CA 94583 “To be Christ for Others as Christ is for Us.” Learn it, Live it! Care for God’s creaƟon by recycling the PASTOR Rev. Also the First Friday of the month at 7:00 PM (unless otherwise noted) PRAYING THE ROSARY Monday - Friday a er the 9 AM Mass SCRIPTURE REFLECTION “If anyone comes to me without ha ng . . . father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Ha ng? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semi c hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confron ng life-changing challenges. Faced with conflic ng loyal es, disciples must reorder priori es, even rela onships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has bap zed in prison. Not only with uncondi onal forgiveness but with a countercultural, world-sha ering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy challenge me to “hate”—meaning reform, redo, even u erly revamp—so I can give everyone, no condi ons, no excep ons, shockingly Christ-like love? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Page Two ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH A NEW SAINT! MOTHER TERESA OF KOLKATA 1910–1997 Pope Francis will declare Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a saint on September 4. Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Although some people cri cized her for not also challenging the injus ces that kept so many people so poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. Born to an ethnic Albanian family, she went to India in 1929 as a Sister of Loreto and became an Indian ci zen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Shortly a er she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year wai ng period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was bea fied in 2003. A er her bea fica on, the postulator of her sainthood cause, published a book of her le ers, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light. The le ers illustrated how, for decades, she experienced what is described as a “dark night of the soul” in Chris an spirituality; she felt that God had abandoned her. While the le ers shocked some people, others saw them as proof of her steadfast faith in God, which was not based on feelings or signs that he was with her. The date chosen for her canoniza on is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Va can for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy. This month we honor and celebrate her dedica on to Catholic social teaching and her witness to the Gospel of life. “May we never forget that in the service to the poor we are offered a magnificent opportunity to do something beau ful for God.” - Blessed Mother Teresa LEARN • On Formed.org! These challenging mes can pull us toward despair and all the many dangers that come with it. Into this reality, the Church shares a word of hope, direc ng hearts and minds to the dignity of each human person and the sanc ty of work itself, which is given by God. She seeks to replace despera on and isola on with human concern and true solidarity, reaffirming the trust in a good and gracious God who knows what we need before we ask him (Mt. 6:8). The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 in honor of Labor Day. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Wisdom from Pope Francis’ “The Name of God is Mercy:” “The most important thing in the life of every man and every woman is not that they should never fall along the way. The important thing is always to get back up, not to stay on the ground licking your wounds.” “By welcoming a marginalized person whose body is wounded and by welcoming the sinner whose soul is wounded, we put our credibility as Chris ans on the line. Let us always remember the words of Saint John of the Cross: “In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone.” “There are no situa ons we cannot get out of, we are not condemned to sink into quicksand, in which the more we move the deeper we sink. Jesus is there, His hand extended, ready to reach out to us and pull us out of the mud, out of sin, out of the abyss of evil into which we have fallen. . . Jesus waits for us, He goes ahead of us, He extends His hand to us, He is pa ent with us. God is faithful.” “Mercy will always be greater than any sin, no one can put a limit on the love of the all-forgiving God. Just by looking at Him, just by raising our eyes from our selves and our wounds, we leave an opening for the ac on of His grace. Jesus performs miracles with our sins, with what we are, with our nothingness, with our wretchedness.” CONTACT US SACRAMENTS PARISH OFFICE 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd. San Ramon, CA 94583 Phone: 925 830-0600 Fax: 925 830-5059 Email: ParishOffi[email protected] Website: www.sjasr.org The City: www.sjasr.onthecity.org Hours: Monday - Thursday: 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM, Friday: 8:30 - 2:00 PM Rev.
