ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH
Reflection for Sunday Feb. 9, 2014
We ARE the salt of the earth and we ARE the light of the world. Yet Jesus knows it is easy to withhold the salt and hide
the light under the basket. He knows it is our nature to look for the minimum. Maybe someone else will do it because it always
seems to get done, or maybe if no one knows I’m here they won’t ask me for anything. That works for a while but we all have
God given talents that no one will see unless we let them. I look around at all the people the Lord has had cross my path in this
life and were willing to share their faith with me and know that I am the Chris(an man today because of all that I have
encountered.
We ARE the salt of the earth and we ARE the light of the world. Yet because we are afraid to be too strong a seasoning
or light, we back off all together. We are afraid to be fools for Christ. We minimize the effect the salt and light within us can have
on others. We use baskets to cover our lights and hold onto our seasoning so (ghtly that it loses its en(re flavor. We can’t back
off because we never know who needs to see that light and taste that salt and the difference we can make in a person’s life.
We must come to the realiza(on that our lives are not neutral. Either we reflect the light of Christ which posi(vely
affects those who see it, or the light is covered and the affect is nega(ve for anyone who is looking. How do we season with the
salt of Christ or let His light shine? Take a moment to consider a few ques(ons:
Where do I need to add salt in my world?
What can I do to have my light shine brighter?
These are important ques(ons to contemplate if we are inten(onally going to season and shine.

Bringing Salt & Light
"The Church is the salt of the earth, she is the light
of the world. She is called to make present in
society the leaven of the Kingdom of God and she
does this primarily with her witness, the witness
of brotherly love, of solidarity and of sharing
with others." – Pope Francis, Q & A Session with

Food For Friends : February 15
15--16 Collection
In February our . Please remember our friends who need a helping hand with a donation of non-perishable
food items or food cards. A reminder: if you cannot bring a donation that weekend, yet still desire to
contribute, please place your donation in the cabinets that line two main church entrances when it is
convenient for you.
In January, you donated 103 bags of food plus 2 food cards. Because of your generous support in December
and the efforts of our youth groups, we were able to donate 40 boxes of food and $6000 (due to the
Thanksgiving collection and an extremely generous cash donation). Thank you very much for your incredible
continued support of Food For Friends.
Our goal for 2014 is to expand our client list from the present group (Crisis
Nursery, Farm Workers, Stand, Shelter Inc., and St. Vincent de Paul/St.
Michael's Livermore, and a parish family) to include more parishioners in need,
and possibly another organization. I pray that we can count on your continuing
support in answering Christ's call to reach out to our brothers and sisters who
are in desperate need of a helping hand. May God richly bless you for your
food donations and prayers.
Catholic Values: Take It To The Streets!
Catholic Evangelist Brings The Power Of The Gospel To Life
Richard Lane, the dynamic and engaging Catholic Street Evangelist and founder of
Qorban Minsitries, will be our guest speaker at the February 11, 2014 breakfast forum. Mr. Lane, son of the late Dick “Night Train” Lane; National Football League
Hall of Fame cornerback, will share with us his journey and talk about the importance of sharing our faith in a pro-active fashion. He often asks “With a faith so
powerful and rewarding why would you not want to share the experience as
you would an experience with a good book, movie or restaurant?” He reminds
us of the words of Pope Francis, who is calling for all of us to take our values and
the Word of God to the streets. “Instead of imposing new obligations,
(Christians) should appear as people who wish to share their joy…” (Pope
Francis, The Joy of the Gospel: Evangelii Gaudium) Register now to hear this dynamic and uplifting Evangelist speak about what we know in an new and exciting
way. Be sure to invite your friends and family.
Go to www.catholicsatwork.com to register for this breakfast
forum.

An image flashed across my TV screen
Another broken heart comes into view
I saw the pain and I turned my back
Why can’t I do the things I want to?
I’m willing yet I’m so afraid
You give me strength
When I say
I want to be your hands
I want to be your feet
I’ll go where You send me
I’ll go where You send me
